  • In this video I give a full review and demonstration of the Makita DUH751Z hedge trimmer. In this particular example I have the DUH751RT kit which comes with the hedge trimmer plus a rapid battery charger and a 5amp hour battery. I explain and demonstrate the functions of the hedge trimmer, I cut a long hedge to show you how the tool performs and then I give you my thoughts on the tool, both good and bad.

Good Review, I just got mine yesterday and what a Beast, I heard it was heavy. I would caution the average homeowner like me with a modest amount of shrubs, this unit is likely overkill. Its heavy and the blade is quite long, which is good for larger straight trimming. I'm a tool guy and I admire the engineering and quality of this tool. Am I glad I got it yes, would I have gotten the smaller unit in retrospect, likely. It cuts beautifully with less tearing and a finer cut then my older unit I'm replacing, features like speed adjust are cool too. I would classify this as homeowner/commercial grade. When your cutting in tighter spaces though or having to manipulate the tool a lot it feels like it weighs 15lb, but actually weighs about 10. Maybe being 65 matters too, so working smarter not harder is my goal.

I'd agree with everything you said. Not a light machine for light use, but for a long hedge like mine, it makes light work...and builds up the muscles a touch! Thanks for the feedback and thanks for watching.

Great, no-nonsense review. It's clearly your personal opinion and some may disagree due to different personal preferences. I have the batteries so may go ahead with the purchase. It was good to see the demonstration and although my hedge is probably tougher than yours, I did notice that as well as all the fresh growth, you also seemed to have some tougher looking parts within your hedge!

Excellent review! :) I just used one, this morning, that my son's friend lent to him. Very quiet, refined and smooth to use. Loved the soft start/variable speed. Didn't realise it had a jam release function; wish I'd known that; super idea! I like the revolving handle too. I'm 6' 4" but with my son's high hedge I needed to hold it inverted with the handle on the underside which gives considerably more reach; probably a foot, which is handy and wasn't awkward to do.
Wish they made a long reach version as my son's partner has her flower bed under the hedge so that long reach would allow standing on the path without pussyfooting through the flower bed AND make cutting the top easier too. Probably be too expensive for my wallet though and this isn't cheap either. £350 with charger and two batteries as of June2022!!
As a 'pre-death' DIYer I just make do with the cheapos. If you're a pro and/or have the money this is as good as it gets I suspect.
I'm glad I found your channel as you seem to have some useful info on it. Good effort!

This is the long reach hedge trimmer I used to cut my parents hedges when I was around 15yrs onwards. Brilliant piece of kit. Well-balanced; like me, when using the shoulder strap! Chains in tubes drive, and I found non-fatiguing to use. I now see that Teagle made their own engine; I had thought it was the popular 'mini-motor'. If I was younger I'd make one using exactly the same layout with the electric motor and battery where the engine used to be. The chain drive worked very well, toothed belt over aluminium extrusion would be lighter/better. 'Clutch' was by tightening and loosening the V belt drive. Happy days! :)

For those interested. The annoying auto off feature turns the tool off after just 60 seconds. I would consider this rules it out for regular professional use. On the positive side when you turn it back on it remembers your last speed setting.

5amp hour on full speed was about an hour. It basically does a 35 to 40 meter length of privot hedge as seen in the video on full speed stop start. I keep one on charge just in case. It does start to feel heavy by the end of it but nice tool for larger hedges and trees. Hope that helps.

It is actually the blades that are different. The duhxx1 series have curved blades, the duhxx2 have the "normal" blades. Supposedly the curved blades reduce friction, and thus reduce noise and increase battery life.
