Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that hanging a depiction of Jesus dying in a church is weird
Very. I grew up Catholic and one time in high school I went to church high and we were all saying the prayers and the hymns and whatnot when it hit me "ohhhh. This is just a really, really old cult. I'm in a cult. What we are doing right now is unbelievably creepy."
Also, the Jesus in our Church was in _especially_ good shape for someone in his situation. Chiseled. People call him "buff jesus" and at least that made it a little funny instead of so creepy 😂
I remember when I was like 8, I walked up to the priest after the service and was like "hey so if Jesus is risen why do we always show him nailed to a cross everywhere". I don't remember what answer the guy gave exactly, but it was definitely just a fancy way of saying "huh I don't know"
dude i remember as a kid i remember thinking “if the bible says we cant worship idols why do we pray to statues of jesus and mary (i grew up catholic)” and then i asked the priest and he was SWEATING like little ten year old me had this dude stressing. his answer was some fancy way of saying “im not sure lmao” im sure theres a proper answer from the church but like. damn it was funny. im not catholic anymore but i still giggle thinking about that interaction
@@kiwii5463 I grew up in a bible study that took that super seriously, it was considered sinful to have images of Jesus. I don't think the bible study was a big fan of me, at 6 or 7 I remember telling my grandmother (who had a pretty high position in the bible study) that heaven sounded terrifying, that I didn't want to live forever, and certainly not without all of the things that bring me joy. She was PISSED, and I heard a lot of "I'll pray for you." statements for a while. (I realized we're talking about religion and my username might sound religious, it's Bibble, from Barbie Fairytopia.)

It’s like the people in power are losing because no one cares to be ruled by fear anymore, so they’re bending over backwards to try to appeal to emotions because “awww but you have to adhere to our twisted version of the Bible otherwise Jesus will be sad and I’ll lose all my money 🥺👉👈”
Honestly coming from a horrifically abusive fundamentalist background, i am living for the loss of Christianity in the USA. I love it. I hope that I can live to see the day where Christianity becomes the minority religion.
they're scared. it shows with all the current bills being passed throughout the country. being lgbt is becoming more and more accepted as time goes on, even newer generations are unlearning the stuff being taught. the world has become so polarized as a result that the hate is louder than ever, but the positive voices are too. keep fighting guys, that's all we can do.

As someone who was once a VERY devout Christian and is no longer one, you hit the nail on the head. The current “mainstream” church pushes this idea that ANYONE can belong to the church. But once you get involved more, you see the reality.
I went to a very progressive church that never really talked about “the gays” in a bad way. They acted very supportive and loving. But then a lesbian couple joined the church and wanted to volunteer. They were told they couldn’t volunteer in the preschool, elementary, or high school ministries. They could only volunteer in the cafe or as door greeters. As a bi woman, I kept my sexuality a secret because of past experiences with other churches. When I felt comfortable enough to come out, the lesbian couple was told all of that. I decided to remain in the closet because I was a volunteer with the student ministries and I didn’t want to get kicked out. Not to mention the fact that the church was very anti BLM (but you wouldn’t have known it at first).
Churches lure you in with this false sense of acceptance and then once you feel like you’ve made this little faith family, they show their true colors and you’re left wondering how you got in that position where your closest friends are raging homophobes/transphobes/racists.
I’m not saying EVERY church is like this but when the majority of them are, it’s hard to feel comfortable around christians.
Are we secretly the same person?? Because I had a similar situation from being super devout to getting scape goated for listening to metal (which has a whole Christian niche lol). So glad to hear you made it out!

Very true for me too, except for me I started super early at 11 years old. Was sent to a somewhat traumatic bible camp, was "converted" or whatever and it pretty much engrained internalized homophobia at a very young age.
Finally opened my eyes at 18, now 20. Didn't even realize being bi was a thing because of my terrible education and everyone around me was closeted.
i was watching the super bowl with my christian grandparents and we saw one commercial informing about women's health (specifically menopause) and one about jesus.
during the health ad, my grandmom got upset and went "oh, why do they have to show that? this is not the place."
during the jesus ad, she just nodded and sincerely went "mhmmmm"

Honestly you're so right. I'm an ex Christian who grew up HEAVILY involved with the church. Jesus DID preach "love thy enemies" and "turn the other cheek" but he DID NOT stand idly by while people were being oppressed. And, to top it all off, he hated capitalism. Jesus, if he were alive today, would be LIVID that that stupid "he gets us" commercial played during the biggest capitalism circle jerk we call a sports event.

Ya know, as I was growing up, one of the most important things that was preached in that story was Mary’s “yes”. Like, when she said yes to the angel when he asked if she was cool with having God’s son. But like, it’s kinda crazy how much that was emphasized when the same people who preached that to me were actively trying to make it so that modern humans had less choice than Mary had when giving birth to Jesus.
Throw in the story how Joseph almost made Mary a single mom until he had to be convince to stay with her

The pastor randomly in between songs started talking about how "too many people in the church have, as God told him, eating addictions. And that without God, these people will never be satisfied. So, let's pray over these folks you can see in the congregation with this affliction." Which is just blatant fat shaming. And then, like out of nowhere during worship, everybody started bowing? Imma say it, religion really do be preventing us from reaching our full potential. Holding us back from becoming true Nuggets Of Power.
My biggest issue is how to bridge the very large gap between atheists and theists - I find it really hard to want to engage with folks who have a fundamentally different belief in the state of existence and reality itself. The two are just inherently incompatible and make it hard to form anything other than shallow relationships, especially since a lot of folks seem to think morality stems from faith and not just...being nice people, which creeps me out and makes me question their motivations.

I work at my church (it sucks) and it's one of those middle to upper-class churches (and VERY conservative) and sometimes I just wanna get on stage and go off like in the video. But at the end of the day, I have a little laugh because I'm bi so I'm like a little spy
ive been getting these ads nonstop for like a year and i despise them oh so much. thank you so much that someone is finally covering this shit and im appalled that this also ran at the super bowl. the ones i usually get are preying on peoples' depression and anxiety, but this new series of ads is something else entirely
Christians loving football is ironic also because many of their games take place on Sundays which according to their religion is the one day people aren't supposed to work. Hell my current job is technically more religious in that regard because nobody works on Sundays.
I think people should steal from hobby lobby more. They don’t pay much attention, the cameras are obvious and very limited in scope.. They don’t use barcodes so it’s theoretically not that difficult. This is all theoretical, hypothetical, and in minecraft of course.
The Hobby Lobby family is even crazier than that - they founded/basically fully funded the bible museum in DC and wanted "the best bible artefacts in the world" so they essentially ended up smuggling things into the country/working with ISIS to secure them. Then they worked with baylor university in texas (my alma matter) to basically dissolve mummies in the hopes to find bible fragments in the wrappings. there's a great book on this called Bible Nation: The United States of Hobby Lobby that goes into detail I had to read it for one of my classes in undergrad

I've had more trauma from other things in life, particularly from some Atheists I've known personally. You have to remember that religion isn't bad; people are. It's easy to blame religion, but the problems will only stay if you don't focus on them instead.

@@baileyj7968 I get my fabrics from Fabric Wholesalers Direct online. Waaaay cheaper than in store shopping, but the downside is you can’t feel your fabric first unless you wait for the samples to arrive. They are lacking in trims however.
Thanks for this video. As a trans christian I am all too familiar with the hypocrisy in the mainstream American church, and it’s really frustrating. You did a really good job of speaking about this as a nonbeliever and keeping it to actually critiquing evangelicalism as opposed to religion as a whole, which I know is often difficult for folks who don’t have as much experience with religion.

I’m atheist and sometimes, I forget just how Christian hobby lobby is. I love getting canvas from there, so I’ll be looking through the isles and then see a happy birthday card from Jesus.
If possible you should try not supporting them by shopping at their stores. They’re not just christian (which is fine, in my opinion), but they do support and fund a lot of harmful things. I also know it is not always as much as an option for some people so I understand. (Like there’s a hobby lobby and a michaels in my town, so I just shop at michael’s, but some people don’t necessarily have this option). Ultimately it’s up to you but if I were you I would just recommend looking into the things they support and decide if that’s something that matters to you and maybe try to shop somewhere different. Or just steal.

This kid is such a skeptic (and intelligent) that a sunday school teacher wanted to quit after hearing him constantly asking questions (he was 6). I don't know how he would have reacted to this ad but I'm sure he would have come up with his own reasons to not like it.

the nfl was in my city this year, with the big festival down the street from a theater i work at even, and it was honestly a NIGHTMARE. 25% of people were actually excited and the other 75% wanted to die.

I'm not sure it's the biggest sporting event in the world, even just in terms of a TV audience. The World Cup has to be up there, as well as the Olympics. If you tell me it's the biggest in North America, then sure.

This commentary on the US and christianism is very important at the moment!!! A key example of how the church is extremely imbedded into the way the elected officials in Congress think is forcing an abortion ban on half of the population when other religions, such as judaism, preach that it is important to save the person's life by having an abortion if the person is in grave danger of dying by the pregnancy. I do not care what your political views are on abortion, but denying people from a legal access to abortion will not stop the abortions. You are just limiting people's liberty and people's religious rights to have said abortion. I really enjoyed the critique on the duality of christianism vs. what Jesus preached!!!! Thank you for putting into words what so many people are thinking at the moment about the United States :)
