Italian wall lizards are reproductively mature at 1-2 years, so from this we can assume somewhere between 15 and 30 generations! The lizards lay 3-4 clutches of 4-7 eggs a year, which have a 5-7 week incubation period
@@misterx168 it is difficult to calculate as average age at which someone has their first child varies so much per country and over time, but the average for england at the moment is 30. so using this it would be 660 years. however, as we are going so far back i think a more accurate average age would be 25, as this was the around the average from 1938-1989 so that would be 550 years.
When I was younger, we didn't have a yard, we had a very large gravel patch. I wound up figuring out that the grasshoppers I caught in said gravel patch were grey, wheras the ones I caught farther into our local woods were green/brown. Same species, just an interesting color split due to where they lived

@Gaming Gator Adapting only gets you so far. Creationists actually love rapid evolution, as that’s how we explain the existence of the species today from the low populations on Noah’s ark. We simply recognize that adaptations are shuffling of existing information, epigenetic switches, or reductions in information. We realize that adaptations are ultimately limited and deleterious.

Another fast-evolution event that's been seen recently is in commercially-harvested fish. At least one species has evolved to come to sexual maturity while still under the "throw back" limit...
Species is technically a categorization we construct. Mother nature doesn't care. Grizzly bears and polar bears are distinct species by all normal standards yet they can breed with eachother and produce offspring that can also reproduce. Similarly with beluga whales and narwhal, yet we consider them different species. The major factors that limit the ability for two closely related species to reproduce is chromosome matching. Hence why donky and horse create infertile mules, they have two different chromosome counts. But how we define differences in species is not exclusive to chromosomes. Even different mating rituals can significantly limit hybridization because they can't "whoo" eachother even if they are genetically compatible which is why the finch lineage only mated within its own group, they had no other pressures to go outside their own inbred family, unlike the patriarchal founder who literally had no other options.

perhaps evolution means more then just animals changing, but is also a sit in word for people coming from apes... why would someone agree with someone who said they came from an ape? and why are birds proof of it? everything changes over time, but no matter how small a rock becomes or how its shape changes it never changes into a bird, a snail, or a rabbit. it stays a rock... the same rock... no mater how much it changes. just like anything. changing without changing. just like people, who change, but never change.

Humans share some DNA with apes we are very much related to them genetically, and if you look at the DNA of all animals you will find that at some level they are all related, that in itself should tell you that should you go back enough in time, you will find the same ancestors for a lot of closely related species.

@@samuelwilliams5161 considering the big bird line lasted to it's seventh generation, I would consider that a possibility of the gene pool balance idea,besides down the line it would have some changes due to the environmental factors so some having slight altercations would bring in a better chance i am assuming of the gene pool being filled with a bit more specimens would help as them having a different size beak would be linked to their genes having some more variety
reminds me of something i learned in my 7th grade science class. There was a a species of moth in England (i forget what they're called) that were largely white as it helped them blend into the trees in the area, there was also a rarer, black variation. during the industrial revolution, the trees became blackened by the soot from the factories, and the black population of moths became the norm and the white became rare.
In Chernobyl’s exclusion zone all of the tree frogs (which are bright green in other areas) have turned black. The increase in melanin help protect from radiation

I heard that a white-bricked school protected someone's grandfather from radiation during the bombing of Japan because the building reflected the radiation, and those who were in darker-bricked buildings got cancer or died from radiation poisoning fast. Poignant but incorrect. The time is tied to reproductive cicles and the lifespans of generations. The actual variable is environment. Since only environmental shifts (which can be as insignificant of a dryer month than usual to as drastic as a whole new species migrating there) will induce natural selection between specimen able and unable to cope with the shift. The survivors adapted successfully.

We’ve observed changes in the wing shapes of songbirds in response to changes that humans have imposed upon the forests they migrate to. Some species have developed pointier wings when forests in Quebec thinned, and others have developed duller wings when forests in New England thickened. Give it a google. It’s interesting stuff!
People are gullible to cons and many have been indoctrinated from childhood. Also there are many people who simply distrust anything that is endorsed by academia.
i think its mainly a matter of going against religious beliefs. some may be too close minded or are confused (never properly educated on the topic). i would imagine it mostly comes from the environment where they were raised and what was taught to them as children, so to those i hold no ill will. that, of course, is not everyone, and no two situations are the same.

Most people who deny evolution think it's synonymous with metamorphosis. They imagine evolution is a sudden drastic change like a baboon giving birth to a modern human.
Fossil Draws often times in school this type of detailed explanation is left out. Showing graphs of chimp to chimp like human to human is still taught unfortunately.

You have lack a mutation that allows humans to continue digesting milk after infancy. Evolution only explains the diversity of species, not the diversity of individuals. @@JKenny44 that's not the same as selective breeding. Selective breeding is more like eugenics. People chose specific traits they liked in dogs and only continued breeding the animals that had those traits so more future specimens would carry them. It's not natural selection or evolution at all. Those happen naturally, as the name suggests. You're talking about one thing that happens on its own in nature and another thing that is forced upon the species.

These small changes become much bigger over large amounts of time. Neither is the case. The only factor is how much each individual, with their slightly changed features, is likely to reproduce. The coolest thing is that evolution existed before life on earth. Evolution as a process is really just the way that repeated selection can lead to uniform changes in any kind of population. Origin of life research (specifically systems chemistry) is really interested in many kinds of chemical evolution that led to the development of life.

I believed adaption could create new varieties, subspecies, or very similar species from an original (like maybe all canines could conceivably descend from the same canine ancestor, but I didn't accept that all land-dwelling tetrapods could come from the same ancestor, that sort of thing). I used to think that evolution just popped out of nowhere in a couple billion years so this video saying that evolution can happen at any time and happens over generations taught me something new.
Another example is the Anolis Carolinensis of Florida. The brown anoles invaded from cuba and pushed the green anoles higher to the branches of trees. They evolved different toe pads and other arboreal adaptations. Pretty cool to research
as a florida resident I can see this, I have also noticed that the green anoles are territorial and will stick in one spot for a very long time, and unlike the brown anoles, which surround my house they're usually the only ones that hang by the gutters.
I had a both a green and brown anole that mated constantly but never had any babies show up so I guess even tho they are alike enough to willingly breed they're not close enough to create viable eggs....or are they???

I did. Turned a batch of fruit flies in to starch flies in a month and all it took was an apple and a potato in a netted rubbermaid bin. Anyone can do it if they want to prove evolution to themselves.
Fragotron McFarland They were no longer fruitflies, they died when reintroduced to fruit because they were no longer able to process it. They didn't even mingle or mate with fruit flies. At that point, they had branched off down a new path. So when a finch can no longer eat seeds and nuts because it has a beak specialized for bugs, most would say that this finch had evolved to take advantage of its environment. But to you, this is simply an adaptation. Meaning there is no reason to consider that these birds are becoming a new species. Adaptation would be a bird using fur instead of sticks to build its nest during a cold snap, that bird has adapted a method to deal with the changing climate. If that bird has to change how its body processes food to go from eating bugs to eating carrion, fish, small prey or seeds and is no longer capable of processing its original diet, than they are evolving. If the fruitflies learned how to extract sugars from a starch heavy food, that would be an adaptation. To process that starch as its food instead of fruit sugars is a method of evolution. It's worth noting that starch can be converted in to sugar, but to develop their biology to do that means they can no longer process the straight sugar of a fruit. Over time they can convert back over a matter of generations, but no one bug is going to dynamically adapt depending on what food you place before it. Fruit flies should not, in my understanding, be able to convert something in to sugar since they have no need for such a mechanism. They have to evolve a method to deal with a strained environment where fruit is becoming more scarce.
Fragotron McFarland Think of humans, our hair is due to evolution, our clothes and heat sources are adaptations. We adapt very well as humans, but not because we evolve to do so. We don't grow plates for defense or claws for offense, we adapt with armor and weapons to contend with threats.

Thanks Trey. You’re the voice of reason. I’ve never understood why creationists feel the need to drive a wedge between the scientific community and the religious community. If one believes that God is all powerful and can do anything, why could not God use the tool of evolution as well as the tool of environmental catastrophe to change the history of the earth? If that’s what you believe, then, of course God could. I don’t see any dichotomy between the scientific system of physical knowledge and religious systems of spiritual knowledge.
Yeah, unfortunately the people pushing creationism don’t actually care about evolution or god/spirituality. They just want to use it as a wedge issue to promote their less palatable ultra conservative and Christian nationalist views. I’m an atheist but I recognize that religion/spirituality is an important part of many people’s lives and it’s sad that the leaders of the creationism movement have convinced so many of their followers that in order to adequately practice their religion they have to reject science. When as you said, that isn’t necessary.
I have family members who are young earth creationists, and every creationist I have had a conversation with about evolution believes that all animal life was created as God intended, and is immutable. There are certain beliefs that they hold that to them are incontrovertible truths. The contention that all animal life that exists today was made by God and unchanged from the moment of its creation and is unchanging is one of them. This remains a tenet of their religion and to refute it is seen as a direct attack on their religion.
this is how catholics (at least. the ones i grew up with) see evolution and science, they accept the earth is as old as it is and that evolution is a thing. after all how do we know those "7 days" god took to create the world arent actually billions of years from our perspective?

The perspective shift happend to me when I started selectively breeding plants and realised that I was basically playing the same part as nature would in natural selection. Evolution accelerates as environmental pressures increase.

I don't find this surprising. These examples show that the rate of speciation responds to selective pressure.This is how I have always understood evolutionary theory since I first encountered it. (Approximately in the Sixties.)
I still know evolution is a fact but instaces like this just make me confused because it leaves me with an important question. Where are the random mutations? If evolution is done over a period of time through trial and error through random mutation, how is this possible? Could this imply evolution is more simple process with some sort of formula? Ive read so many works on evolution and ive been getting into quantum theory (quantum biology specifically) and it seems as if it could be possible that something else is happening rather than random mutation. I would like to write a fully fleshed out theory but here is a summary: Rather than evolution being a series of successful random mutations, evolution is actually entirely pre-determined. A dramatic change in environment for a species that can adapt to the change, will obviously be changing his behaviors in order to survive. Through these environmental and behaviorial changes, the brain starts behaving different as well and when this happens, *the brain decides to change the DNA of the species* over time to better handle the new setting. Because *once the mind and body have adapted, the DNA starts to change to reflect those mind and body changes more accurately.* This then starts causing the species offspring to start exhibiting physical traits that can be used to take better advantage of the species surrounding evironment. There is some evidence to this as well. There is an instance of an identical twin going into space and coming back with different DNA from his identical twin. Why did this happen? Because when he went into space, the zero gravity *environment caused his brain to react and force his DNA to change to better reflect that environment.* If this were to be true, then it could it be possible to harness that unconscious aspect of the brain in order to force a genetic mutation onto another species? Could this imply that not only do survival aspects of oneself change but so do the sexual/cultural/ritualistic aspects of a species also evolve because of this? Example: male bird color looking more saturated and vibrant as evolution progresses because their minds seek that sexual trait in order to reproduce. I think evolution of life is a self perfecting formula put into practice. Life is the canvas of this formula. If there is no will or reason to change, a species will stay stagnant in evolution for extremely long periods of time. This is why "living fossil" species exist. They are technically perfect in their ability to survive where they exist. What are your thoughts on that?

Yes, and no. Smaller populations have a smaller genetic pool resulting in less possible genetic diversity this is similar to an idea called the founders effect, but with a population that has restricted energy, ie an island there is a larger fight for energy going on, causing a larger need for adaptation. The smaller populations in an area with more energy would however continue to grow and become genetically diverse that way. With islands, there is limited energy causing the population to plateau and the only option of the organisms is to fight for energy rather than expand and find a new source of energy. P.s not sure if this is right this is all i learned from 9th grade bio
Not necessarily. If the environment on the island remains stable and there are no mass deaths, the gene pool should remain fairly unchanged. But if the environment is unstable, more deaths, and genetic mutations that cause changes to an individual's phenotype (white fur vs black fur, ability to digest plant matter) then there will be changes to the gene pool, possibly resulting in evolution. And what everyone else said is true too.

I wound up figuring out that the grasshoppers I caught in said gravel patch were grey, wheras the ones I caught farther into our local woods were green/brown. Species is technically a categorization we construct. Mother nature doesn't care. Grizzly bears and polar bears are distinct species by all normal standards yet they can breed with eachother and produce offspring that can also reproduce. Similarly with beluga whales and narwhal, yet we consider them different species. The major factors that limit the ability for two closely related species to reproduce is chromosome matching. Hence why donky and horse create infertile mules, they have two different chromosome counts.
But how we define differences in species is not exclusive to chromosomes. Even different mating rituals can significantly limit hybridization because they can't "whoo" eachother even if they are genetically compatible which is why the finch lineage only mated within its own group, they had no other pressures to go outside their own inbred family, unlike the patriarchal founder who literally had no other options.

reminds me of something i learned in my 7th grade science class. There was a a species of moth in England (i forget what they're called) that were largely white as it helped them blend into the trees in the area, there was also a rarer, black variation. during the industrial revolution, the trees became blackened by the soot from the factories, and the black population of moths became the norm and the white became rare.

People are gullible to cons and many have been indoctrinated from childhood. Also there are many people who simply distrust anything that is endorsed by academia.
i think its mainly a matter of going against religious beliefs. some may be too close minded or are confused (never properly educated on the topic). i would imagine it mostly comes from the environment where they were raised and what was taught to them as children, so to those i hold no ill will. that, of course, is not everyone, and no two situations are the same.

People chose specific traits they liked in dogs and only continued breeding the animals that had those traits so more future specimens would carry them. The coolest thing is that evolution existed before life on earth. Evolution as a process is really just the way that repeated selection can lead to uniform changes in any kind of population. Origin of life research (specifically systems chemistry) is really interested in many kinds of chemical evolution that led to the development of life.

I used to think that evolution just popped out of nowhere in a couple billion years so this video saying that evolution can happen at any time and happens over generations taught me something new.
Another example is the Anolis Carolinensis of Florida. The brown anoles invaded from cuba and pushed the green anoles higher to the branches of trees. They evolved different toe pads and other arboreal adaptations. Pretty cool to research

They were no longer fruitflies, they died when reintroduced to fruit because they were no longer able to process it. They didn't even mingle or mate with fruit flies. At that point, they had branched off down a new path.
So when a finch can no longer eat seeds and nuts because it has a beak specialized for bugs, most would say that this finch had evolved to take advantage of its environment. But to you, this is simply an adaptation. Meaning there is no reason to consider that these birds are becoming a new species.
Adaptation would be a bird using fur instead of sticks to build its nest during a cold snap, that bird has adapted a method to deal with the changing climate. If that bird has to change how its body processes food to go from eating bugs to eating carrion, fish, small prey or seeds and is no longer capable of processing its original diet, than they are evolving.
If the fruitflies learned how to extract sugars from a starch heavy food, that would be an adaptation. To process that starch as its food instead of fruit sugars is a method of evolution. It's worth noting that starch can be converted in to sugar, but to develop their biology to do that means they can no longer process the straight sugar of a fruit. Over time they can convert back over a matter of generations, but no one bug is going to dynamically adapt depending on what food you place before it. Fruit flies should not, in my understanding, be able to convert something in to sugar since they have no need for such a mechanism. They have to evolve a method to deal with a strained environment where fruit is becoming more scarce.

I’ve never understood why creationists feel the need to drive a wedge between the scientific community and the religious community. If one believes that God is all powerful and can do anything, why could not God use the tool of evolution as well as the tool of environmental catastrophe to change the history of the earth? If that’s what you believe, then, of course God could. I don’t see any dichotomy between the scientific system of physical knowledge and religious systems of spiritual knowledge.

Yeah, unfortunately the people pushing creationism don’t actually care about evolution or god/spirituality. They just want to use it as a wedge issue to promote their less palatable ultra conservative and Christian nationalist views. I’m an atheist but I recognize that religion/spirituality is an important part of many people’s lives and it’s sad that the leaders of the creationism movement have convinced so many of their followers that in order to adequately practice their religion they have to reject science. When as you said, that isn’t necessary.
I came to this same conclusion when I was like 10 years old lol. I don't know how they still can't wrap their heads around it.
I have family members who are young earth creationists, and every creationist I have had a conversation with about evolution believes that all animal life was created as God intended, and is immutable. There are certain beliefs that they hold that to them are incontrovertible truths. The contention that all animal life that exists today was made by God and unchanged from the moment of its creation and is unchanging is one of them. This remains a tenet of their religion and to refute it is seen as a direct attack on their religion.
this is how catholics (at least. the ones i grew up with) see evolution and science, they accept the earth is as old as it is and that evolution is a thing. after all how do we know those "7 days" god took to create the world arent actually billions of years from our perspective?

I still know evolution is a fact but instaces like this just make me confused because it leaves me with an important question. Where are the random mutations?
If evolution is done over a period of time through trial and error through random mutation, how is this possible?
Could this imply evolution is more simple process with some sort of formula? Ive read so many works on evolution and ive been getting into quantum theory (quantum biology specifically) and it seems as if it could be possible that something else is happening rather than random mutation.
I would like to write a fully fleshed out theory but here is a summary:
Rather than evolution being a series of successful random mutations, evolution is actually entirely pre-determined.
A dramatic change in environment for a species that can adapt to the change, will obviously be changing his behaviors in order to survive. Through these environmental and behaviorial changes, the brain starts behaving different as well and when this happens, *the brain decides to change the DNA of the species* over time to better handle the new setting. Because *once the mind and body have adapted, the DNA starts to change to reflect those mind and body changes more accurately.* This then starts causing the species offspring to start exhibiting physical traits that can be used to take better advantage of the species surrounding evironment.
There is some evidence to this as well. There is an instance of an identical twin going into space and coming back with different DNA from his identical twin. Why did this happen? Because when he went into space, the zero gravity *environment caused his brain to react and force his DNA to change to better reflect that environment.*
If this were to be true, then it could it be possible to harness that unconscious aspect of the brain in order to force a genetic mutation onto another species? Could this imply that not only do survival aspects of oneself change but so do the sexual/cultural/ritualistic aspects of a species also evolve because of this? I think evolution of life is a self perfecting formula put into practice. Life is the canvas of this formula. If there is no will or reason to change, a species will stay stagnant in evolution for extremely long periods of time. This is why "living fossil" species exist. They are technically perfect in their ability to survive where they exist.
What are your thoughts on that?

Aconitus environment doesn’t just change his DNA. It can also change the outcome by effecting the mRNA translation. And don’t forget, not all parts of a DNA is informational and only the gene parts are usable

Yup. Smaller populations often inbreed more, thus making recessive genes more likely to appear.

Yes, and no. Smaller populations have a smaller genetic pool resulting in less possible genetic diversity this is similar to an idea called the founders effect, but with a population that has restricted energy, ie an island there is a larger fight for energy going on, causing a larger need for adaptation. The smaller populations in an area with more energy would however continue to grow and become genetically diverse that way. With islands, there is limited energy causing the population to plateau and the only option of the organisms is to fight for energy rather than expand and find a new source of energy.

Not necessarily. If the environment on the island remains stable and there are no mass deaths, the gene pool should remain fairly unchanged. But if the environment is unstable, more deaths, and genetic mutations that cause changes to an individual's phenotype (white fur vs black fur, ability to digest plant matter) then there will be changes to the gene pool, possibly resulting in evolution.

@@henryautumn37 Devolution would imply that elephants with tusks are more evolved than the ones without and that is simply not a concept that exists. Elephants wihout or smaller tusks simply live to give on their genes and the other ones do not. Thats evolution by natural (or human) selection and nothing is higher or lower because of that. Its simply what works best at the time.
