This song is about guitarist Jerry Cantrell’s father who served in Vietnam War. Lyrics tell the story of what Vietnam vets faced during and after the war. Great video to a great song.

Seelenwinter 666 not a popular war and it is not unreasonable to debate the war itself. To paint all Vietnam vets with the same brush is unfair and that mindset is why they were mistreated when they came back home.

"No Excuses," "Smudge Factory," "Love, Hate, Love," "Bleed the Freak," did you say "Again?" Can't see above- video kinda overtly demonic but good song. "Dirt," "Brother," "The Killer is Me," "Got Me Wrong," "Over Now." "Stone" I like a lot, too, recorded several years after Layne's death when they regrouped with Jerry Cantrell taking lead (I know you probably know). I second your suggestions, too, love "Nutshell," "Grind," "Would," "I Stay Away," & "Sea of Sorrow...."

    • @KellyKellyKellyKellyKellyKelly

@Robert Lee That song starts off with a bang and doesn't stop! Layne's beginning vocals are something else! Well, all his vocals & Jerry Cantrell's talent is nothing to sneeze at either. Layne's vocals on "Love, Hate, Love" and "Nutshell" are chilling, especially live at The Moore or wherever it was for "Love, Hate, Love " and MTV Unolugged for Nutshell.

My ex-husband served as well. He eventually talked about it and it was brutal! The saddest part of his story was how the boys were treated when they came home! Absolutely disgusting! It still brings tears to my eyes! I need to add that he and I are divorced only because of the lack of help for him from the VA! The red tape was insane and impossible to cut through at that time.

Check out "Love Hate Love", also "Nutshell" from Mtv Unplugged... Their whole discography is full of hits... can't go wrong.... one of the top bands to come out of the 90s Seattle grung scene, along with Soundgarden, Pearljam and Nirvana... check all these groups out for a great time in music! Rooster is the old man's nickname in the video, which is Jerry Cantrell's (lead guitarist and secondary vocaliast) dad... in the beginning of the video it goes back and forth between Jerry and his dad taking about the war(Vietnam). The look in his eyes while talking about it tells the story more than words ever could... the memories of ut all obviously left their scars and had a traumatic effect on his psyche...

Mom told me that some of the men in his platoon died and he felt crazy guilt over it. When I grew up I understood much better. I loved my cousin so much, he was funny and handsome and sweet. Hey, near the end of Layne's social life, I guess, and performances, he was in a band of various band members that got together called Mad Season, their main song which Layne sings is called, "River of Deceit." Good one. Live at the - ugh - forgot, but it's the only one besides the weird video I think. Maybe good for one-hit wonder, 90s? Also, I love grunge, Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audio Slave "Show Me How to Live," great!, and Temple of the Dog). This last band was put together to honor a dead friend, drug OD I think, former roomie of Chris', and has Eddie Vedder and the musicians that would become Pearl Jam. Forgot to check if you'd done this, sorry! But, "Hunger Strike," maybe you did do this? Really great song. Eddie Vedder's first released recording & video, I think. I would think they would fit for "Hunger Strike" as a one-hit wonder. There were other songs but Mad Season and Temple of the Dog are known for those individual songs. Have a good one! Hope you feel better soon!

My best friend's dad was in the Vietnam War but all he would ever tell us is he was shot twice came home went back was shot again ended up with two purple hearts for bravery but he would never ever get into detail
    Bravery!!
When he finally came home he was a bricklayer and he fell 20 floors from scaffolding and on his way down he reached out his arm grabbed a piece of scaffolding and ripped his pecs and shoulder but held himself he is amazing

This is one of my favorite songs to see people react to. It’s when Layne hits that first scream. Time for more AIC and grunge in general!

The "Rooster" character (played by James Elliott), was based on Alice in Chains' guitarist/vocalist, Jerry Cantrell's father (Jerry Cantrell Sr.), whose lifelong nickname was "Rooster." Cantrell Sr. served two combat tours in Vietnam, and also appears in the music video talking about his war experiences.

Rooster is on the Mount Rushmore of songs that you have to listen to at MAX volume to really get the full context of the song. I’m gonna put Zep - Immigrant Song, Motörhead - Overkill and The Who - Baba O’Reilly to fill out the last 3 spots. Those 3 at 75% max volume are just not good but at 100% pump it into my veins.

Just now seeing this, I think it’s time for you to do more Alice In Chains! To get a sense of their harder stuff, I’d suggest “Would”, “Them Bones”, or my favorite-“Angry Chair.” But anything will do!
