Who Ate The Berries This Year

- I thought the Starlings would be eating the berries on our Sorbus tree like they have done every year. They usually arrive in late September or early October and in no time at all the berries have gone. This year that tree had the best crop of yellow berries I have seen since it was planted year ago but by the end of October Starling had not arrived and strong winds were bringing some leaves down.
What a surprise it was when on 12th November a large number of Woodpigeons arrived and started picking the berries off. It is the first time I have seen Woodpigeons eat those berries as I have read that most birds do not like the yellow berries. I enjoyed watching them over the two to three days they were here so I took some footage for this video. By 15th November the Woodpigeons left the back garden and went to the front garden and to eat seed from the bird feeders there. The berries they left were on the lower branches and soon Blackbirds have come for them as the Woodpigeons could not manage to reach them.

That tree has been in our garden about 30 years and this is the first time Woodpigeons have shown any interest 🤔 They certainly kept coming back in large numbers for three days until only the lower thinner branches had berries left. It is the Starlings who have been emptying that tree every year but they arrived last Monday so too late. I think they were a bit disappointed with the few left. Thank you Brenda, It was a surprise as I was waiting to see the Starlings swarm into that tree and within one afternoon they have usually taken most of the berries and dropped quite a few on the lawn! We have been in this house for 30 years now and my mother-in law bought that tree for us the year we moved in but It is the first year I have seen Woodpigeons eat those berries as most birds do not like yellow ones, something to do with them liking red coloured ones I think. Hello Julie the Sorbus tree has heaps of berries but with doves and other birds around they will slowly be eaten great close up captures of the beautiful doves eating the berries very enjoyable best wishes and many thanks for sharing 💙
Thank you Peter. We have had that tree for about 30 years as well as numerous Woodpigeons, Collared Doves all those years as well and they have never eaten any until this year! The Starlings always ate them and could empty that tree in a day. It was fun watching them and it was a good crop of berries this year. Sad for the Starlings who arrives about 5 days later to find an almost empty tree. Thank you Richard. Well, the Starlings did arrive, but too late on the following Monday! I think they must have been shocked to see that tree only had a few berries left on the lower branches. I could not believe that the Woodpigeons actually ate such a lot as the tree has been in our garden for 30 t=years and they have never shown any interest in the berries at all. We are wondering why the Starlings didn't get to the berries as our neighbour always liked to watch them watch them empty that tree in an afternoon! The tree is almost bare now, just a few berries on the tips of a few branches and not many leaves so, when the Starlings do arrive, they have missed out this year. Enjoy the weekend Cathy. Thank you Petra. I was pleased the Woodpigeons had finally decided they liked those berries. The Starlings arrived the following Monday so too late for a feast. The Blackbirds can reach the few berries on the lower branches as the Woodpigeons are too heavy to get to them but I am sure some of the Starlings might try to reach them as well before these strong winds we have just now, blow them all off! Our neighbours said they also had fun watching the Woodpigeons balancing and turning upside down. I think the few berries they have left are because they are on the end of the finer branches. A few years ago our neighbours said they watched the Starlings arrive and by the time we got home from a shopping trip the tree was almost empty. Where the Starlings have gone this year I don't know, as I haven't seen any for a few week now. Hi Dee, I was really surprised when the Woodpigeons came in large numbers and started eating those berries. That tree was a gift from my mother-in-law when we moved here 30 years ago and I have read that birds do not like yellow berries! That is what I always thought all those years as the only birds that like them are the Starlings who would empty that tree a day every year! Blackbirds also had a few when they got the chance. This year is the first time a Woodpigeon has shown any interest and when the Starlings arrived about 4 days later they got quite a shock when they saw the tree almost empty😍Still, they are good at acrobatics and they are trying hard to get the few on the end of the thin branches the Woodpigeons were too heavy to reach. I must say that this years was the best crop of berries I have seen on that tree. Do hope you are keeping fit and well in sunny Australia🌞 Over here we are back to some restrictions .. again! due the new covid variant and even though Hubby and I have both had 3 jabs, we have to go back to wearing masks again and I hate them😒 Sorry about that little moan. Hello Julie. I must start with the fact that in Poland you can very rarely find a tree: FASTIGIATA yellow rowan - about yellow fruit.
Yours is beautiful, so beautifully decorated with yellow beads :)
Let me tell you that I have never seen pigeons eat fruit either, they must have been delicious !!!

It is one of the first trees we got when we moved here about 30 years ago now. It is supposed to be on dwarf root stock by it has still grown very tall. The yellow berries as said not to be popular with the birds and, until this year, we have only seen Starlings and a few Blackbirds eat the berries. Most years we get a flock of Starlings that finish them off in an afternoon but where the Starlings are this autumn is odd as I haven't seen any for about a month now. I think they will be back as it is going to turn much colder next week. The Woodpigeons did well to balance on some of the branches as they are heavy birds but they must have enjoyed them to come back a couple of days. Those Woodpigeons did well to eat such a lot of berries and they are heavy birds for some of the thinner branches. I am wondering it the mild weather this last month has something to do with the Starlings not turning up as usual to eat those berries. They will arrive soon but how sad they have missed a feed!! Yes, those Woodpigeons worked hard that day as they are a bit heavy when it comes to balancing on some of the thinner branches. I feel for the Starlings missing out on them this year. I think they have miss judged it this year as it has been very mild for November. Back to much colder weather next week so they will be back. Awesome filming, thanks my dear 👏🌹 I wonder why our birds didn’t eat rowan berries at all this year, was it the reason for the severe drought that caused the berries not to taste good to the birds?
Thank you for viewing Harry. That is odd that birds haven't bothered with the red rowan tree berries as they are usually the first to go. If you have had drought near you this year that could be why. We have had very odd weather this year with no drought as such, we had a lot of rain in spring after a dry March and more rain than usual in mid-summer. I have read that birds do not like yellow berries as much as the red ones and I always felt that to be right, as not many birds have shown an interest in the berries on our tree which is now 30 years old! Blackbirds eat a few every year but Starlings are the only birds who come every year and they can empty it of berries in a day! However, I was a surprise to see all those Woodpigeons eating them as they have never shown any interest at all other years so perhaps this year those yellow berries really did taste as good as they looked. These lovely Woodpigeons sure found the right spot this year and got to enjoy some delicious berries. Nice to see the Blackbirds got into the action too ,and enjoyed some of them as well Julie. Strange about the Starlings. I hope they don’t decided to still show up , because they will surly be surprised to see nothing for them. Thanks so much for sharing my friend. Thank you Irene. That tree has been in our garden for many years and always had crop of berries every year but it is the first year the Woodpigeons have touched them. I was surprised to see them and they certainly didn't stop eating until they gave up on the thin branches. I am pleased to tell you that the Starlings did arrive about 5 days later and they did look a bit shocked when they saw how few were left🙄Still, they are much lighter than Woodpigeons so managed to get quite a lot of the berries left on. Thank you for viewing Sally. I appreciate your kind comments. It is the first year I have seen Woodpigeons eat these berries and it has been in our garden almost 30 years. The tree is a garden variety of the Mountain Ash or Rowen Trees that have red berries but most birds do not like the yellow berries of this one called "Joseph Rock". Other that Starlings I have only seen Blackbirds eat a few when they are hungry so it was a surprise to see these Woodpigeons liked them. Have a happy day. Warm greetings, Julie😊🍂🐤

What a fabulous tree Julie and what a feast for the birds. Great footage of the wood pigeons too, 👍 Had the Arborists here today. Glad I didn't gave to climb those trees. Uploading a video at the moment, taking some time. We unvaccinated are now Locked out of all but essentials. Vaccinated are niw free but fir a small few things, My 71st next week but cannot go out for a celebratory dinner. Beans on toast? With a glass of house bubbly (Posecco)? Suppose I should be glad we're not in Austria. Mind you, 'Chairman Dan' has almost done just that. Anger and protests are increasing. Happy days (not). Thanks for brightening up the day. A few years ago our neighbours said they watched the Starlings arrive and by the time we got home from a shopping trip the tree was almost empty. Where the Starlings have gone this year I don't know, as I haven't seen any for a few week now. nice that all the fallen trees etc. will be clears off your land now. Sad that you are still having to be restricted so much. Our lot are now saying it is the younger school children that are passing it around over here now and after Austria and Germany taking stricter measures it makes one wonder what will be happening next in other parts of the World.🤷♀️ Well, as long as you have the Prosecco on your birthday, that will be OK. What an abundance of berries Julie. The yellow ones are less popular because birds have more difficulties to see this colour compared to red berries. I was very surprised to see sparrows eat those kind of berries, where I normally see them on the feeder eating seeds only. There is always something new to discover. Greetings
I was surprised to see those Woodpigeons because, as you say, birds prefer red berries. However they didn't want to leave any until they couldn't quite manage the berries on the ends of the thinner branches We have had Starlings every year eating them but for some reason I haven't seen any for a few weeks now so when they do arrive they have missed out this year!! On Monday the Starlings arrived in the garden only to find the berries they come for every autumn had almost gone! Many thanks Indigo. The Woodpigeons and others have been coming to our garden for years but this is the first time they have eaten those berries. Only the Starlings seem to like them and the Blackbird only a few. It was a good crop this year so perhaps they tasted better. We will have to see what happens next autumn🤔 Have a happy day. So true Saderé! Some birds can be quite fussy. We have a lot of Tree Sparrows and they love the suet balls but when it comes to the best bird seed in the feeders, they feed in large numbers, taking turns while scattering seeds out. I have seen it shower out as the feed and down to the ground below. Luckily we do have Blackbirds and other birds that sit under that feeder and quickly finish off what the Tree Sparrows give them so nothing is wasted 👍🐥 Thank you for viewing. Have a happy week. Yes they did eat most of those berries and just left enough for the birds who could balance on the thinner branches. Most years we have had Starlings in large numbers taking them in a few hours and then Blackbirds takes a few. No Starlings to be seen near us these last couple of weeks but they will be back, however they have missed the berries this year as the tree is now empty!
