Honestly the Green Yuri manga definitely deserves a video in its own for how inspired the idea to use a simple but extremely beautiful to see color as a background contrast to the already highly gorgeous art. Like, the manga wouldn’t have hit the borderline divine level of visual deliciousness if it didn’t use such a simple, but such a wonderful and inspired use of color.
while i do agree the lack of marketing is a huge issue, the bias towards BL/male characters plays a role too. even in a media that wildly known with developed female cast the focus in fandom will mainly be on the male characters and ships even if they had minimal presence which irks me a LOT. don't get me started how female characters get hated for things male chara get simped over.
I still remember waking up to a bunch of people on the Love Bullet fan discord half-panicking about Inee's original tweet announcing the series's troubles, and then the rollercoaster ride two weeks of the discord blasting from about 150 members to *2000*. Love this manga and love everyone who's taken part in this community.

got a friend into How Do We Relationship and was literally gushing just yesterday about how well the story gets fleshed out over time and how the fact that a yuri manga was given the chance to do so with 100+ chapters and counting is nothing short of a miracle
The fact that it was so long (plus a lot of comments talking about how well written it was) was the main reason why I picked it up. It was so rare to see a gl manga get so many volumes I wanted to join it the hype. And it did not dissapoint because it's sooo good.
I wasn't sure what I was expecting when I decided to read Love Bullet, it sure wasn't a extremely emotional and tragic story of realizing you missed a chance you didn't know you could have had. That really killed me and I need more.
Finding out here that Hanamonogatori and Tsubame are axed. My poor heart! Ibis would look so good in an anime adaptation! And as a lady pushing 40, seeing old woman yuri was such a breath of fresh air! (Pocha Climb getting cut short killed me a few years back.) And, oh man, if Moon on a Rainy Night gets axed. God, Kuzushiro's art is so good, and it'd kill me. Also, seconded on Love Bullet! I heard nothing about it /until/ the campaign to save it showed up on my socials - and I read a ton of GL. Just insane ball-dropping by the publishers.

Hanamonogatari's cancellation absolutely gutted me. It was such a cool story. It was a concept I've wanted to see and it was one involving Yoshiya Nobuko's S fiction in a novel way. One that spoke to me as a sapphic whose gateway into loving other women was the neo-S of the 2000s. I still remember reading the mangaka's post about the cancellation. I was so sad.
I hope this shows manga publishers that there IS a market for yuri- even if it’s a niche market. With manga/light novels, I’ve read/watched only ONE yuri series: I’m In Love With The Villainess. And while it’s good, man, I wish there were more pickings for me to choose from.
I would describe Love Bullet as Alien Nine/Madoka Magica with good vibes. I like how the contrast between humans and cupids is shown visually through black and white.
I've been a fan of the series since the first chapter was translated, a friend shared it and we've been following it religiously ever since, the story, characters, art and concept are all so good, extremely emotional and powerful, I love a good exploration of grief. So when we found out it was in risk of cancelation we all jumped into promoting it, making art and buying a copy, talking to anyone who was willing to hear about it, and seeing the movement slowly grow into something so big was special, I really have hope that the manga will be saved, and I hope this leads to more GL mangas being promoted, cause there is an audience very happy to buy and support them. I absolutely adore Love Bullet, I've got a digital edition, ordered a physical copy and I'm planning to order another to donate it to my local library. Also I think that Japanese creators need to abandon magazine coverage and embrace apps like webtoon and hav a patreon link so fans can directly support them.

It's crazy to see this knowing someone who's in the fan-run Love Bullet discord server and was giving me updates as they were promoting the series, trying to save it from being axed. I'm so happy to see the GL community come together to help save a series in an underlooked market.
Weirdly enough, Sukeban no Tenkousei was translated and published in spanish. I didn't know it was cancelled, I literally saw a pair of volumes on sale last week.
As I watch the video I do want to add- BLoved publishing has picked up Clear and Muddy Loss of Love and Female General Eldest Princess, two gl novels, but I don't think that's the norm for them (maybe it will change?)! Also, I hear there are some issues with the license right now, so I'm not sure what will happen with that. Not to contradict your point however! As a long-time gl fan I always feel that lack of support for yuri.
German manga localisations show the same tendencies as the English-speaking ones. A lot of straight romance manga and a lot of BL gets localised but very little GL. However, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't A Guy At All also got promoted a lot on social media and got a lot of engagement. I tried to buy it a week after it came out and the store was sold out of it. So a week later I tried every shop in my city that sells manga. Sold out in every single one. So I had to order it online from an Amazon seller as even on the publishers' online shop it was sold out. I really hope that that manga's success will lead manga localisation publishers to rethink how many yuri series they pick up.

I went to 4 book stores in Japan and it was sold out in 3 of the 4 and the 4th had never heard of it (but it was way out of the city in the countryside). Its such a cute series.
This makes me so sad. GL series really get the short end of the stick so much... Thank you linesinmotion for shining a light on this issue! EDIT: have you made a GL series recommendation list before? I've got my finger on the pulse of what's going on but even then I feel like I'm not very in the know of genre GL that are worth the read.
LOVE BULLET IS SO GOOD I remember buying a copy, then later it came to my attention that the manga was in danger and needed support! I went to go get another vol 1, but it was sold out! That made me really happy.
I'm glad you not only covered how the immense support that rescued Love Bullet from cancellation, but as well as the rampant issue on yuri manga being cancelled before the story can even start. One of the yuri stories I{m supporting rn is a white rose in bloom, and in the course of summer the only people promoting the english license were fans of the author (mostly spanish speaking fans) and the author herself! We do an incredible work so Seven Seas keep licensing this series and I just imagine all the other series that have authors that aren't that popular or recognized that suffer from the lack of marketing, so when I learned about Love Bullet I also had to support it too, and I'm glad I did because the story is so good! I'm hopeful our efforts truly makes this manga flourish with time
Oh I love A White Rose in Bloom. I was introduced to yuri via Marimite and Marimite doujin. So that classical feeling school yuri's always been near and dear to me. And this one has influences from English boarding school fiction and the art is just so interesting. I love how handsomely beautiful Steph is especially. Whenever I get a chance it's one of the first series I recommend people try out.
I picked up the manga with little to no expectations and was devastated when I caught up. This series has so much potential, I genuinely hope Inee gets to tell the story in it's entirety.

I once read that "Publishers don't look at what's popular within fan translations, because those readers would never become buyers" . Love Bullet, more than ever, proves that statement is false.
There is a global audience for yuri. Hundreds, if not thousands, bought a manga in a foreign language to support a series they cared about. Publishers need to realize this, especially when they don't even advertise to their own market. Heck, even some authors started crowdfunding their manga in English and succeeding.
It's also very obviously false by looking at what gets published vs what has existing fan tls. At least for yuri, there are like 3 stories I can think of that didn't have fan tls before they were licensed, and not because fans tl everything. There's a lot of entirely untranslated yuri out there, it just doesn't have a preexisting fanbase so they don't touch it

This was an extremely well made video, showcasing the double standards the yuri/GL series face in Japanese and international markets, and the impact that having unsupportive editors and publishers can have on a mangaka’s sense of self worth. It’s extremely frustrating both as a sapphic woman, a fan of the yuri genre, and a lover of comics period. I think the only good example of a mangaka being able to finish their story on their own terms, that I know of, is Hidebu Takahashi’s “Stigmata: Love Bites”, which began as a seinen manga with BL subtext, got cancelled after one volume (presumably for said subtext), and then came back five years later in a BL magazine, telling a compelling, character driven detective BL story. Hopefully your video helps reach people and helps them think about giving yuri works a second look, or for companies to put more support into advertising their yuri titles.
Goze Hotaru mention, I was so sad it got axed. I got into Love Bullet only to see the mangaka make her post regarding the low sales and I was so upset. It’s already such a great story to follow and there’s so much to be explored with all the girl’s backstory and the lore of the world. I brought a digital volume and I hope all the fan support is enough

There have been yuri focused mangazines in the past. Comic Yuri Hime is the only one that's still around to my knowledge and they've moved to digital only issues. I do wish there was something like this for translated yuri because there really isn't. The closest I've ever found is ALC Publishing. They're very small though and only ever translated and published a few things. Mostly their store directs you to sales fronts for works published by other companies.
Seeing the series that got cancelled plus the disparity between liceneses is so sad😢. But to spread some good news and since we are on the Halloween month I'd like to recommend the horror yuri "this monster wants to eat me". A yuri that has been able to have more than four volumes and it's getting an anime adaptation on 2025! I'd especially recommend this to anyone that loves titles such as The Summer Hikaru Died.

A historical fiction manga about a Japanese girl who is traveling to England and..[i suggest reading actual description]) Qualia the Purple (A very interesting yuri with darker themes sometimes. When I read it I had a lot of fun reading it) Mietemasu yo! Aizawa-san (a yuri about a ghost and a girl . The girl seems to not remember a lot of things for reasons unknown) Kono Koi wo Hoshi ni wa Negawanai ( your childhood friend starts dating your other childhood friend so you start dating your senior[older friend but around the same age as you] woah this seems to be going well!) Genkai OL-san wa Akuyaku Reijou-sama ni Tsukaetai (surprisingly pretty art and a yuri isekai except isekai part is known but it helps the mc a bit , very cute manga overall) Itsuwari no Marigold ( I become my brother (dressing like him not actually being him) which in turn makes me have his gf. Super solid, it recently finished and i thought it was good for being [i think it was cut short?] cut short.) Shuu ni Ichido Classmate wo Kau Hanashi (LN especially can get kinda spicy. This is a REALLY good LN and its manga adaption is good too, the characters and their slow-but fulfilling development in this slow burn is really good [this is also called ; Shuukura]) The Moon on a Rainy Night ( I cant explain this story in a way that gives justice to its self / the story so ill c&p the desc ; One rainy night, Saki is rushing to a piano lesson when she crashes into a beautiful, long-haired girl, dropping her sheet music in the process. Saki stutters an apology, but the girl simply hands back her sheet music and leaves without a word. Saki begins her first day of high school the following morning, only to find the stranger from the night before sitting at the desk next to hers. She learns that the girl’s name is Kanon and that she is not quite completely deaf, but very hard of hearing. Though Kanon needs to be close to people to read their lips, she tends to push people away with her icy demeanor. Through one kind gesture, Saki slowly begins breaking down the walls around Kanon, even as she feels something new blossoming within her. [Kodansha])

My favorite GL is Machikado Mazoku or The Demon Girl Next Door. Its a soft yuri but I love the story. The overarching story is very indirect and often takes a back seat to the immediate character exchanges. The story is so indirect that you can often over look a major plot point from a minor instances and seemingly throwaway line. If I wasnt following it on forums, I would have missed a lot. A little more, the story seems positive but its pretty dark once you think about everything. It has had 2 anime seasons released. The manga has been very slow lately since the author has major health issues.
This has depressed and frustrated me for a long time. I think the beyond cancellations the biggest thing that's stung for me was the queer manga section for untranslated volumes in the Kinokuniya that opened near me. I was excited to see it at first and then I looked and just about the only series I found there was Citrus. Not even a single anthology. The entire rest of the wall was either BL or Japanese translations of danmei. I'd check every so often to see if it improved and if anything got worse as I stopped seeing even Citrus there. I gave up eventually. I moved away before I could really start trying to help show there was interest by ordering and picking volumes up in store. I hope it's improving. I do. Also just placed an order for Love Bullet through them. It'll be nice to expand my yuri collection.

It’s really a shame how they treat GL. I bought a copy of Love Bullet to support and I hope this lasts, but some of the series I would have loved. The basketball one would have probably have me just as hooked so much. Edit: To be fair I’m not an avid romance reader so I don’t hear about romance much. However, I follow a lot of different people and usually I’ll see them talk about some series I don’t usually indulge in. Until Love bullet it has never been a GL ever

I just started reading this manga, one very silly thing i like is.... There are actually BOYS in a GL manga! Impossible! XDD I noticed that in a lot of GL stories the male gender just straight up doesnt exist. Is pretty silly if you think about it, I mean I understand that in a GL story the girls are the main goal (is in the genre's name, duh) but come on, men are like 50% of the population of the planet too XD.
yup so many potential manga got axed, its sad when you invested in the story then suddenly things got rush its happen very often its suck, and you guys when trying something new atleast give em 3 chapter and pls try different title not just things that blow off on the internet

I know many people who prefer the use of Shoujo ai and GL over the use of Yuri. In my experience, the use of GL is more encompassing of the different types of women x women stories that are told!
@@FairFelineJust want to say that the term "Shoujo ai" is basically a western invention. In Japan "yuri" is used for any stories about wlw, wether they are sexual or not and "Shoujo ai" has pedophilic connotations since it is only used for love between young girls

Not only has it been used to split yuri/GL into irrelevant categories and make it harder to find, it also does not have the connotation of lesbians in japanese. Unlike shounen ai which afaik really exists as a subset of BL, shoujo ai is mostly referring to love of little girls by adult men, so lolicons. And with a connotation like that i think it's better to stay away from even if it was used in EN spaces lol

It's crazy to see this knowing someone who's in the fan-run Love Bullet discord server and was giving me updates as they were promoting the series, trying to save it from being axed. I'm so happy to see the GL community come together to help save a series in an underlooked market.
Weirdly enough, Sukeban no Tenkousei was translated and published in spanish. I didn't know it was cancelled, I literally saw a pair of volumes on sale last week.

As I watch the video I do want to add- BLoved publishing has picked up Clear and Muddy Loss of Love and Female General Eldest Princess, two gl novels, but I don't think that's the norm for them (maybe it will change?)! Also, I hear there are some issues with the license right now, so I'm not sure what will happen with that. Not to contradict your point however! As a long-time gl fan I always feel that lack of support for yuri.

German manga localisations show the same tendencies as the English-speaking ones. A lot of straight romance manga and a lot of BL gets localised but very little GL. However, The Guy She Was Interested In Wasn't A Guy At All also got promoted a lot on social media and got a lot of engagement. I tried to buy it a week after it came out and the store was sold out of it. So a week later I tried every shop in my city that sells manga. Sold out in every single one. So I had to order it online from an Amazon seller as even on the publishers' online shop it was sold out. I really hope that that manga's success will lead manga localisation publishers to rethink how many yuri series they pick up.

I went to 4 book stores in Japan and it was sold out in 3 of the 4 and the 4th had never heard of it (but it was way out of the city in the countryside). Its such a cute series.

EDIT: have you made a GL series recommendation list before? I've got my finger on the pulse of what's going on but even then I feel like I'm not very in the know of genre GL that are worth the read.

I remember buying a copy, then later it came to my attention that the manga was in danger and needed support! I went to go get another vol 1, but it was sold out! That made me really happy.
I'm glad you not only covered how the immense support that rescued Love Bullet from cancellation, but as well as the rampant issue on yuri manga being cancelled before the story can even start. It's heartbreaking to see so many rough diamonds not getting their time to shine, due to the lack of marketing.

One of the yuri stories I{m supporting rn is a white rose in bloom, and in the course of summer the only people promoting the english license were fans of the author (mostly spanish speaking fans) and the author herself! We do an incredible work so Seven Seas keep licensing this series and I just imagine all the other series that have authors that aren't that popular or recognized that suffer from the lack of marketing, so when I learned about Love Bullet I also had to support it too, and I'm glad I did because the story is so good! I'm hopeful our efforts truly makes this manga flourish with time
Oh I love A White Rose in Bloom. I was introduced to yuri via Marimite and Marimite doujin. So that classical feeling school yuri's always been near and dear to me. And this one has influences from English boarding school fiction and the art is just so interesting. I love how handsomely beautiful Steph is especially. Whenever I get a chance it's one of the first series I recommend people try out.

I picked up the manga with little to no expectations and was devastated when I caught up. This series has so much potential, I genuinely hope Inee gets to tell the story in it's entirety.

I once read that "Publishers don't look at what's popular within fan translations, because those readers would never become buyers" . Love Bullet, more than ever, proves that statement is false.
There is a global audience for yuri. Hundreds, if not thousands, bought a manga in a foreign language to support a series they cared about. Publishers need to realize this, especially when they don't even advertise to their own market. Heck, even some authors started crowdfunding their manga in English and succeeding.
It's also very obviously false by looking at what gets published vs what has existing fan tls. At least for yuri, there are like 3 stories I can think of that didn't have fan tls before they were licensed, and not because fans tl everything. There's a lot of entirely untranslated yuri out there, it just doesn't have a preexisting fanbase so they don't touch it

This was an extremely well made video, showcasing the double standards the yuri/GL series face in Japanese and international markets, and the impact that having unsupportive editors and publishers can have on a mangaka’s sense of self worth. It’s extremely frustrating both as a sapphic woman, a fan of the yuri genre, and a lover of comics period.
I think the only good example of a mangaka being able to finish their story on their own terms, that I know of, is Hidebu Takahashi’s “Stigmata: Love Bites”, which began as a seinen manga with BL subtext, got cancelled after one volume (presumably for said subtext), and then came back five years later in a BL magazine, telling a compelling, character driven detective BL story.
Hopefully your video helps reach people and helps them think about giving yuri works a second look, or for companies to put more support into advertising their yuri titles.

It’s already such a great story to follow and there’s so much to be explored with all the girl’s backstory and the lore of the world. There have been yuri focused mangazines in the past. Comic Yuri Hime is the only one that's still around to my knowledge and they've moved to digital only issues. I do wish there was something like this for translated yuri because there really isn't. The closest I've ever found is ALC Publishing. They're very small though and only ever translated and published a few things. Mostly their store directs you to sales fronts for works published by other companies.

Seeing the series that got cancelled plus the disparity between liceneses is so sad😢. But to spread some good news and since we are on the Halloween month I'd like to recommend the horror yuri "this monster wants to eat me". A yuri that has been able to have more than four volumes and it's getting an anime adaptation on 2025! I'd especially recommend this to anyone that loves titles such as The Summer Hikaru Died.

Shuu ni Ichido Classmate wo Kau Hanashi (LN especially can get kinda spicy. This is a REALLY good LN and its manga adaption is good too, the characters and their slow-but fulfilling development in this slow burn is really good [this is also called ; Shuukura])

I'm very happy to see this!!! First time I hear of Love Bullet was from @KitoSenpai, and it intreged me very much. Love the editing in the video, keep up the fantastic work
My favorite GL is Machikado Mazoku or The Demon Girl Next Door. Its a soft yuri but I love the story. The overarching story is very indirect and often takes a back seat to the immediate character exchanges. The story is so indirect that you can often over look a major plot point from a minor instances and seemingly throwaway line. If I wasnt following it on forums, I would have missed a lot. A little more, the story seems positive but its pretty dark once you think about everything. It has had 2 anime seasons released. The manga has been very slow lately since the author has major health issues.
This has depressed and frustrated me for a long time. I think the beyond cancellations the biggest thing that's stung for me was the queer manga section for untranslated volumes in the Kinokuniya that opened near me. I was excited to see it at first and then I looked and just about the only series I found there was Citrus. Not even a single anthology. The entire rest of the wall was either BL or Japanese translations of danmei. I'd check every so often to see if it improved and if anything got worse as I stopped seeing even Citrus there. I gave up eventually. I moved away before I could really start trying to help show there was interest by ordering and picking volumes up in store. I hope it's improving. I do.
Also just placed an order for Love Bullet through them. It'll be nice to expand my yuri collection.

It’s really a shame how they treat GL. I bought a copy of Love Bullet to support and I hope this lasts, but some of the series I would have loved. The basketball one would have probably have me just as hooked so much.
Edit: To be fair I’m not an avid romance reader so I don’t hear about romance much. However, I follow a lot of different people and usually I’ll see them talk about some series I don’t usually indulge in. Until Love bullet it has never been a GL ever

I noticed that in a lot of GL stories the male gender just straight up doesnt exist. Is pretty silly if you think about it, I mean I understand that in a GL story the girls are the main goal (is in the genre's name, duh) but come on, men are like 50% of the population of the planet too XD.

Not only has it been used to split yuri/GL into irrelevant categories and make it harder to find, it also does not have the connotation of lesbians in japanese. Unlike shounen ai which afaik really exists as a subset of BL, shoujo ai is mostly referring to love of little girls by adult men, so lolicons. And with a connotation like that i think it's better to stay away from even if it was used in EN spaces lol
