The whole album is worth a listen. This is very different to everything else on the album. It's a concept thingy. :)

@@markabusireactions I will say this is the only song on the album like this. The album tells a story and this song really doesn't make sense without the buildup. I'd also recommend having lyrics on hand to reference because sometimes it's hard to tell what's being said

this album is the best album i’ve ever heard. i’d love to see you react to more of it! i recommend going in order of the tracks though, as it can be confusing to understand the storyline. and having the genius annotations pulled up helps understand what is happening in each song and what it means

I don’t have genius sadly, so I can’t do that! But I think I have an idea for how I could do it, and maybe do it justice? It just requires a bit of time and planning on my part. But I reckon I might (no promises) have a full album reaction for Halloween night, to mark the occasion!

This is a really good listen if you know the meaning behind the song- though it requires you to listen to the entire album to understand.

I'm hoping you react to the whole album, because it is genuinely An Experience. You may as well be watching a movie. Watching your reaction to just this was super entertaining, and would be even better in context. In Ptolemaea, Ethel is hallucinating. The terrifying voice is actually her hallucination of god, but you're right that there's a man hurting her during it.
Some tips/clarifying points for if you do a whole listen, from someone who has watched sooo many reactions to it and knows the whole lore:
    - this is a concept album from the POV of a character named Ethel Cain. The actual artist is named Hayden Anhedönia. She wrote and produced the entire album almost single-handedly (she had a co-producer on 3 songs).
    - it's a good idea to pull up a lyrics sheet! It's very easy to miss what's going on otherwise, especially with her slow delivery and the reverb she has on her voice in a lot of them. Genius also helps you keep up with how each song fits into the story, so I'd really, really recommend that. This album has a lot of unspoken context.
    - This album is in two acts. Intro: Family Tree through Hard Times is Act 1, and Act 2 begins with Thoroughfare. Act 1 is kind of the backstory of the character growing up in her small Southern hometown, and then Act 2 is what happens when she leaves home.
    - Family Tree: Intro and Family Tree are two different songs
    - A lot of people get confused about the men in the story because they are not named. She's had three separate lovers. House in Nebraska is about Willoughby, her first love. Western Nights is about Logan, who is killed by the police. Isaiah is the man present all throughout Act 2.
    - In American Teenager, a lot of non-Americans get confused by this line: "The neighbor's brother came home in a box / but he wanted to go, so maybe it was his fault." "Came home in a box" is an American euphemism for someone who went to war and died overseas; he didn't commit suicide. Not vital to the plot, but I wanted to save you some potential confusion :)
    - I saw that someone commented that she dies at the end of this song- super common misconception, but wrong. The track following this one is called August Underground, the name of a faux snuff film from the early 2000s. It's entirely instrumental. At the very end of the song, you hear a gunshot, and THAT'S when she dies.
    - listening carefully to the background production can really enhance the experience a lot. There's fly sounds in a lot of the songs, for example, which you don't entirely get the meaning of until Sun Bleached Flies, or things like the pounding on the attic door in August Underground.
    - Content warning for CSA in Family Tree and Hard Times. It's not graphic at all but both songs are about it, and I hate it when people are caught off-guard with that kind of thing.
There's a LOT more I could say, but I think I hit most of the things that might confuse you even if you're using the Genius pages. I don't want to ruin your authentic experience with it if you do decide to listen!
