      These things are always subjective. Frankenstat, Angus Young’s SG, McCartney’s bass, and Lucille are about the only guitars I’d put on my own list. SRV’s Number 1, Chuck Berry’s Gibson ES-335, Slash’s gold top Les Paul, Johnny Ramone’s Mosrite, Steve Jones’ Les Paul, Malcolm Young’s Firebird, Brian Setzer’s numerous Gretsch rigs (Hot Rod, Nashvillian, etc), George Thorogood’s Epiphone ES-125TDC...these would be some of my choices for iconic guitars. But then...I don’t have a flimsy youtube channel.

    I would like to make a case for Dr. Brian May's Red Special. It is the only guitar on this list that was made by the guitarist. Brian made this guitar when he was 17 using a piece from an old fireplace mantle, parts from an old motorbike, and one of his mother's knitting needles as a whammy bar. It continues to be his main guitar decades later. What he can do with that guitar is really amazing and no one on this list knows their guitar better than Brian does.

  • @aaroncameron5193
    @aaroncameron5193 5 років тому +7

    Hi all. I wrote this script, and I'm seeing a lot of... passion. So, I'd like to address some of the reoccurring comments. Firstly, I do "know" the subject matter. You're welcome to call the folks at Long & McQuade and MasterCard to confirm this. Second, this project actually dates back a few years, today I might have been able to push more for the picks I wanted, but at the time it was more of a team driven selection process at WM HQ.
    I pushed really hard for the Black Strat. David Gilmour is far and away my favourite guitarist, but back when this was written I'm not sure the general public knew it from any other guitar. This was long, long, long before the auction.
    James Hetfield's "EET FUK" Explorer was suggested by me as a contender, as were SRV's #1, Prince's Cloud, Bo Diddley's Gretsch, Rick Nielsen's 5 neck Hamer, "Jimi Hendrix's Strats (all)", Peter Green's Les Paul "Greeny" which was later owned by Gary Moore and Kirk Hammett, Clapton's "The Fool", and (another personal favourite) Waylon Jennings leather wrapped Tele (although I believe he actually had 4 or 5... there's a group for it on Facebook). In short, most of the "but what about (x guitar)" I'm seeing were on the long list but didn't make the cut.
    I have no sweet clue how SRV's #1 didn't make it to the list. Watching the video just now that really struck me as odd.
    Unfortunately, I have limited control over what image is on screen. This leads to "errors" like Keith Richards holding a different Tele from "Micawber". He owns a few 50's Teles and to an untrained eye they're all the same. Obviously, you and I have "trained eyes", friend. The same is true of EVH's bridge. When he made it it had a Fender Strat bridge, which is what I was discussing. If I somehow knew a photo showing a Floyd Rose installed would appear I'd of made some mention of that.
    You can reply to this if you want, I guess, but keep in mind for me this project is pretty old so I might not remember all the whats and whys of how a certain guitar didn't make the cut, and things like the final list, final edit, and video editing are out of my hands. I also don't often log into this particular account...

    Where to start. Problem with this list is, it’s not about just iconic guitars but iconic models associated with the player.
    Van Halen’s Frankenstein is iconic: there’s only one and it was his main guitar for years.
    Lucille is just the name given to whatever 335 style guitar BB used. There’s no single Lucille that’s iconic like Van Halen’s guitar. Except for the first Lucille he saved from a burning building and does anyone even know where it is now? Seems if we did it would be singled out and in a museum or something.
    Trigger is iconic. There’s no fleet of guitars called trigger.
    Jimmy Page’s main guitar Les Paul is more iconic than his doubleneck. It’s even referred to as being “number one” and the doubleneck was only used for 2 songs: Stairway and Song Remains the Same. Only thing iconic about that guitar is the pics of him playing it.
    Honorable mention for Brian May’s guitar? Was made with his father. It’s the only electric guitar he plays. Unique shape they designed. Has a instantly recognizable sound that helps define Queen’s sound. Who makes these lists???

    When the people making the script really don't get the subject. Far too many iconic guitars missing, such as Brian Mays, Slash's Les Paul, Dave Gilmours Strat, etc but also wrong information, EVH's guitar has a Floyd Rose bridge not a Fender Strat bridge.

    • @aaroncameron5193
      @aaroncameron5193 5 років тому

      No, I understand the subject very well. The actually list is narrowed down by a team at WM, the writer doesn't always get exactly what they want. I pushed hard for the Black Strat. As for EVH, it started with a Strat bridge - I was describing the birth of it, not its final form - but that fact was let down by the pictures [b-roll] being shown while the narration was taking place. That's also not down to the writer. If you watch during the Keith Richards entry, for example, some times it's a different Tele on screen. Randy Rhodes ends with Phoebe emphasizing "Concorde" as thought it would appear on screen, but it doesn't. That's also not down to the author. Somethings changing during the edit as well. For example, I wrote that Paul McCartney changed basses "in" Abbey Road, but it was read as "on" 'Abbey Road', which is not only a different thing but very well might be wrong as I'm not sure what bass he used on "Abbey Road" the album. But again, that's also not on the writer. But, as ever, thanks for watching!

    8. "Old Black" - Neil Young

      Jhonil Garcia I don't agree. It is an iconic guitar but there are so many people that wouldn't even recognize it. The Frankenstrat black and white or after being painted red is a recognizable guitar. Jimi's Monterey Strat, Randy Rhodes' V, Eric Clapton's Blackie, David Gilmore's Strat, Brian May's Red Special, maybe even Keith Richards Tele or one of Angus Young's SGs.
