VW Golf R vs MINI Cooper S Coupe 0-60 MPH mile high Mashup Review

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) The 2012 Volkswagen Golf R is the fastest, most powerful and best handling VW Golf you can buy. Unlike the VW GTI it has all-wheel-drive and more powerful 256 horsepower turbo-charged engine. The 2012 MINI Cooper S Coupe might just be the best handling and fastest MINI in the land but unlike the Golf R it is front wheel drive. It also has a turbo charged engine but it has only two doors and it barely seats two so it certainly doesn't compete with the Golf R....or does it. In another fun and unique TFLcar Mashup we compare apples to oranges to see which car is the better ride.

    From what I can tell, they are done in Colorado. It helps for those that live in this state to see how these cars perform at this altitude. It seems Turbo is the way to go...

    Thanks for your thooughtful comments. In our first drive video from France of the European R car we almost swooned with delight. And while you may not want to hear this...the American Golf R manual is no faster than a GTI automatic to 60 MPH. The combination of AWD and extra weight off-set the 50 HP it has on the dual clutch auto GTI. Plus you and I can't shift as fast as the dual clutch auto...no human can. Finally did you ever consider that as an owner of the R you are not impartial?

  • @TFLcar
    @TFLcar  12 років тому

    To be honest this is the very first time I've ever driven a stick shift car. You'd think with all of the hundreds of cars I've driven and reviewed around the world, I'd know how to shift a stick....but I appreciate you pointing out the fact that since I'm American I need the practice. Of course I was born in Europe but I'll go out now and practice because to your sage comment.

    Perhaps you should read the comments, or pay attention to what we say in the video, or read the captions in the video, or even read the title of the video. If you did any of that you realize that we test @ 1 mile above sea level and that we perform real world testing. So yes, unlike you...we read our comments.

  • @TFLcar
    @TFLcar  11 років тому

    How come when viewers disagree with our results they always say the same thing..."we can't drive". And exactly how do you know the Gold R is much faster? Have you dragged race both of them at 1 mile above sea level or are you just making uninformed comments?

  • @TFLcar
    @TFLcar  12 років тому

    Yes we are the professionals. Just because we like to entertain as well as inform doesn't mean we don't take our jobs very seriously. This is third time I've driven the Golf R. The first time was in France, the second time was at the U.S. Introduction of the car and before this video I drove it on a long road trip both on the highway and in the mountains to get a real feel for the vehicle's capability before we produced and published this review. How many times have you driven it?

    AGREED! I just competed in an AutoX with mine AT ALTITUDE and neither I nor the Hubster had a problem launching my car! Our car put a serious hurt on a number of experienced AutoXer's with much faster cars. You just need to rev the car to around 2200rpm and drop the clutch. The car takes off like a rocket! All "training wheels" should be disengaged and the a/c turned off.

    I think most people that like/own the Golf R disregard all the numbers and the cost. I happen to have one and think most people underestimate it honestly. Only had people with 350z's try to race me but one didn't even come close and one NISMO edition stayed right next to me. With both those cars 0-60 times rated lower than the Golf. Had an STI before my Golf R as well and the interior and daily function of the two don't compare.

    I live in Colorado and I have a Cobalt SS Turbocharged and I spank Mustang GTs, Camaro SS's and all sort of cars I shouldn't beat. Altitude effects performance! As for this video, I still find it difficult to believe a Mini Cooper Coupe spanked a Golf R, but it is what it is. All the nay sayers out there, buy or rent or lease both these cars and put up your own video if it's that important to you. As for the poster, thanks I liked this video.

    As much as I love the VR6, this wasn't about that engine. This is about the 2.0L turbo engine. The R32 is now a 5 year old car and almost killed the R in America because few people wanted the ridiculous DSG transmission. If you have an R32, great, go to the Vortex or one of the R pages. Since you don't have a Golf R, you really can't speak to the slight that this journalist has done to our cars.

    No, there is still a loss - just not as much as a regular internal combustion engine. Some turbos actually self adjust and can compensate a bit more. It all depends on the powerplant, turbo's size, intercooling you name it. Thanks for watching!

    Roman, I live in Colorado and own a Golf R. I can guarantee you that my Golf R is MUCH faster 0-60 than 8.3 seconds even at altitude. Perhaps the test mule that you were given had been abused or didn't have correct fuel in it. I'd be more than happy to show you just how fast a properly maintained Golf R is at altitude. I won't allow anyone to drive my car, though. I barely let my husband drive my car. If you'd like, you can even see what one looks like in action at an AutoX or at HPR.

    I agree, I was thinking of trading my 20th anniversary GTI until I found out there was no DSG in the R. My 20th anniversary stock may only be 180 hp--but after I did the stage I revo and added a cold air intake and with only 2900lbs to carry around, I changed my mind, and I am keeping my GTI after all.

  • @BBoutilier95

    Totally agree with you. The guy in the Golf didn't even get the tiniest bit of wheel spin, looked like a pretty slow start. In other vids of theirs I've seen the a/c on while doing 0-60 runs, maybe not in this vid, but its definitely possible, just another thing sucking power out of the engine. I've driven in the MINI JCW Coupe (200 hp vs. 180 in the S) and drive a Golf R everyday, and there's no way that the MINI is faster. Altitude is a factor, but that result seems a bit too extreme.

    Because people don´t buy if they think it´s to expensive, with 45k u can buy the entrance Audi A6 or a really loaded audi A4 in the US, or if u prefer a good bmw 3 series, a loaded Lexus IS, or acura TL or anything like that, the point is if it´s to expensive dont buy it, the prices will drop. Everybody likes to make fun of the US about cars but the thing is they really understand how the market works, thats why the cars are so inexpensive there.

    Pretty inaccurate comment. Volkswagen charges $23,995 and $33,990 for the R. It's on their website and it's what we were told BY the VW Group LLC. Read up... aww hell - just LOOK on Volkswagen's US website for the prices. Then say you're sorry.

    yes... your VR6 is quick, but at a mile-high altitude almost any naturally aspirated car will loose at least 20% of its maximum sea-level power output ... turbo-cars will suffer less, but even then they will loose some power (maybe 5 to 10%, depending on the turbo-charger used)

    Well, if you want to get a fast 0-60 in an all wheel drive car... drop the clutch at 5k. That is how the awd advantage is captured over the front wheel drive. Did you turn off the traction control on both cars too? Those are two reasons the golf R would be slower.

    All Volkswagens that come to America are extremely de-tuned. There are certain company’s that will transform your Turbo Volkswagen’s into what their really capable of putting out. Let’s take APR Motorsports for an example. You spend $500 just a simple tune, nothing else. There is a good chance you will be putting down 250 Horsepower and around 300 lb-ft of torque to the wheels, depending on model/engine. Not to mention it’s just as reliable, and safe as the "stock" Volkswagens.

    I've driven both and owned a couple MCSs and now a Golf R. Golf is faster for me to 60 but not by worlds, and faster to 100. Never had 'em more than ~2000' above sea level though. Looks like the Golf driver did bog on the launch a bit to me (or has ASR on).
    Using 0-60 as the performance metric for these cars is funny though. Neither of them really show their strengths in straight line speed but rather on the road course/twisties. The Golf is 100x the car as a DD/tourer and more fun IMO.

    @Rextetron - We had both cars on the track, as well. Roman is right about the inital turbo lag, but once both of these machines are spooled up and rolling, it's a different story. I owned a 2006 WRX, and can tell you that both of these cars, especially the Golf R, feel remarkably similar (if not entirely faster) at speed.

    The golf r engine's power depends a whole lot on it's turbo, and at a mile above sea level, that turbo is almost useless. The air up there is so thin that it very well could have affected the time by that much. I know that at sea level, the golf r should've gotten a 5.5-6.0 sec time.

    i really like you 2 guys but i'm sorry to say that THIS drag must have been driven really bad...these things happen! But seriously the Golf R has to make the 0-60 in under 6 seconds. That's a fact. and even if there was not the best conditions (altitude, temperature, air pressure...) such a result is not possible. The Golf is AWD and has much more BHP.
    And NO i'm not claiming because i love german cars. I would prefer the MINI, but the Golf is faster.

  • @DESX312
    @DESX312 11 років тому

    It would have been better imo if you compared the John Cooper Works Coupe which starts off at close to 31k. It is much closer price wise and performance wise with 208hp compared to 181 for the base S model and it comes with Brembo brakes.
    Even with all that you still have about 3k to use to put in a sport suspension and a strut brace to control the body roll on turns.
    I'll take a JCW Mini over a similarly priced Golf R any-day.

  • @happynow01
    @happynow01 10 років тому +3

    Golf R is way faster than that?! odd? Off the line, in the R, it has a MASSIVE response if you ride clutch a little bit... just a little and it will pull out faster. I leave cars at the line all the time when racing. Mine was under 6 sec. zero to 60 at stock with Carbonio... now Twintake, APR, Forge bypass it's even quicker and more throttle with torque all the way to7k RPM limit. The ability to turn off traction systems was added, so now even better launch! this is the only place i see such slow times on Golf R.. so I would say, bad car or bad driving (American version does have " launch control" as well. there is a video of it being used against a Audie R8 and it left the R8 and tied up with it! ) The best part of Golf R is ability to EXPAND on the platform, and like me, still get over 35 MPG on highway... but it is faster than what they say... I like that Mini! though they do ride rough...

    • @brendanmyers3794
      @brendanmyers3794 10 років тому

      You're right on the riding the clutch a little. I noticed a huge difference on my launch when I left the clutch in a tad to let the RPM stay up while the cars launch control kicked in. I absolutely love my Golf R and have no regrets. Though I don't get 35 MPG on highway unless I'm drafting Semi's or bigger vehicles. Usually I sit around 28-30. I beat a Mini Cooper S the other day though. I also think the Speed limiter stops the Cooper sooner than the Golf R's. Mine is limited to 130 mph.

    @nolanzm Excellent question! In addition, how would a car perform blow sea level, on land of course.

    I understand that altitude effects 0-60 times negatively. But why do some cars preform closer to their sea level 0-60 times then others? Is it torque, build quality?

    I've never been a fan of Volkswagen, they are always over priced and not as reliable as everyone claims. This new Golf R doesn't change my opinion at all. I do like the fact that it has AWD but for that price I would rather buy a Subaru STI which is reliable, had more horsepower, and faster.

    Before even watching the video or looking at the comments, by the amount of dislikes i could tell the Volkswagen lost. There's a cult following for VWs

    Not initially as I wrote in my comment, I said from 2010 onwards, all engines are bmw, which is true. Please read carefully before trying to be smart. Furthermore, it is inevitable that in the supply chain you'll find so many different manufacturers, especially when speaking about cars, still, the Mini is now sold thanks to bmw's project. unfortunately youtube isn't the best place to discuss about such a vast argument, there are so many examples to examine.

    The comment about the Golf R being a "premium car" in Europe but just being a VW over here made me laugh. Last time I checked, it wears the same VW badge no matter where you buy it. I know the point he was trying to make, but it should have been better worded/phrased.

    Luxury wise you get more bang for your buck or performance wise? Performance wise you definitely don't get close to bang for the buck in a Golf R compared to a Mini Cooper S.
    A hardtop Mini Cooper S starts at 24k. A base VW R starts at 34k.
    For less than 8k you can get a stage 4 kit that is street legal and gets a Mini Cooper S 260-265hp. That shit will smoke a Golf R considering the weight difference and you still have 2k left to spare.

    Why are people complaining about these videos being "informative" and whatnot? Why're people complaining at all?? If you don't like them, DON'T watch em! Geez.
