Thank you for another great video! A straw for pitting works great. I also use one for coring & removing the stems from strawberries.

Yes, I thought to use it on strawberries as well. Unfortunately, I would need a mortgage to buy any this year. There has been a big shortage of plants this season.

Cherry pie is definitely my favorite pie! My grandpa on my dad's side always used hairpins to pit his cherries. The straw looks like it works great! Great video - thanks for sharing!

As a person with a heavy cropping Stella cherry tree, I can not recommend the OXO Quick-Release Multi-Cherry Pitter highly enough. It does six at a time, drops them into your bowl and holds the pits in a separate compartment. Brilliant.
The straw trick is very clever though if you aren't dealing with a massive crop each year.

Those look perfect. Cherry pie is my favorite fruit pie, especially with a scoop of vanilla ice cream when it's still warm from the oven. I've never had cherry cobbler, I would love to try it. The straw trick is pretty cool.

Preserving cherries was on my to do for today, however I don’t have a pitter either. Now you have shown me the straw method I am excited to try it. Thanks for this video.

Fresh cherries...one of my most FAVORITE things! I don't know that I would ever have the self-control to can them, or freeze them, before I ate all of them. I did one time though make some sourdough chocolate cherry bread though - it had those great fresh cherries as well as hunks of dark chocolate. SO GOOD!!!
You're SO NAUGHTY but yes, I *too* can tie the cherry stem with my tongue LMAO!
Another great video, thanks Stace! Hope you and the family are doing well!

Hey, chickie, cherries, chocolate, and sourdough sound like a dream! They are my absolute favorite, too. I was so controlled not to eat any! I hope your ear is feeling somewhat better today!

@@FarmersWifeHomestead it is still sounding like I'm underwater - been wishing my ears would pop all day! And whoever (I think it was the French) decided that bread and chocolate make a wonderful snack, they deserve an award of some sort. You demonstrated great will not picking at those cherries as you worked. I would not have had the same self control AT ALL! LMAO!

A great (& fun) idea! A few years back, I picked a bushel of orchard cherries (worth the little bit they charged to do the pitting).

I would love to pick cherries one day. They aren't growing up where I live but maybe I can go find a orchard.

These look delicious! Cherry is my favorite pie,but my husband doesn’t like it. 😢
I probably won’t put up cherries because I would be eating way too much pie on my own!
But, I am looking forward to seeing how to do plums if you do a video on that. We love plums!
Thank you also for the reminder on using the pressure canner as a steam canner…I will be using your method soon for sure!
    Have a lovely day! 😊

Hi Stacey, I’m over the ditch (Aussie) and my daughter’s partner has got a job in Young. NSW. I’ve been told that Young is the Cherry capital of Australia. As it’s almost cherry harvesting time, 2 - 3 week away, he plans to get me some from the farmers. I wanted to ask you if I can water bath can the cherries, as I don’t have a steam or pressure canner. How much longer would it take to can them, and if the recipe you’re using would be suitable for that method? I’m a newbie too preserving, although I’m 68yo. I love your videos BTW.

Hello, and thanks for reaching out. Yes, you can absolutely water bath these. Whenever I steam can it is just the same as water bathing. I just like it better so I don't have to heat up so much water. Check out this video on how to water bath can something without any special equipment.

I have to buy cherries because they do not grow here in Geogia. They are very expensive and I just buy pie filling.

We don't have pie filling over here, unfortunately, but luckily I'm the only one that likes them as they aren't cheap to buy.

Azure Standard has Bing Cherries 18lbs. for $20.36 right now, 7/2024 organic $34, I ordered 4 boxes cause the price is right, I will hate myself later after I pit them all, until I eat them all year.
