  • Hey Guys!
    In this video, we are going to be replacing a worn out mainspring in a Rolex Submariner. The watch is approximately 12 years old, and was serviced once, (not by me). Where ever the service was done, however, the mainspring was never examined or replaced.
    Customer's complaint is that the watch is running slow, and after running it on the beat tester, it is running about 7 minutes slow per week, and very inconsistent.

    That’s another neat lesson Peter, you didn’t even un case the movement how much do you charge to clean an old submariner with the 3050 it’s running fine

    Did you ever had a spring force itself thru one of the openings? Had that happen on a seiko 2906 ladies spring in the smallest of winders.

    How do you tighten driver wheel. Not a canon pinion like I am used to. Hands set too easy and watch losing a ton of time

    I would like to see a video that shows how all these tiny parts are manufactured.

    Hi Pete! I have a submariner that needs the hairspring replaced. How ever I don’t know how to detach it from the balance cock.
    Can you make a video on this?

      Sure. But I can explain it also. If you take out the complete balance and balance bridge, place safely on a soft pad. Follow the outer ring of the hairspring. It will end on a small clamp held in place with a .9mm screw. Loosen the screw to release the hairspring. From there you have to remove the hairspring center collet from the staff. This is difficult and you should have a very small screwdriver or collet remover. Additionally you should have a staking set or tool to allow you to attach the new hairspring. Replace back onto balance bridge roughly in the same position. Rolex hairspring are fixed lengths. The issue you will have at this point is beat error and timing. This is complicated to get right without the proper tools. If you have them, let me know. If not I would suggest taking it to be replaced by someone who has those tools. At a minimum, the tools to do this type of repair are at a minimum about 800.00 US dollars. Just so you know, i filmed the timing and adjustment but haven’t had a chance to edit it. I’ll add the section for replacement of hairspring into that video. A couple of weeks before it’s up. In the meantime check out my video on balance staff replacement (pocket watch). Same process just larger parts. That will give you an idea of what’s involved.

    Hey Peter! I touched one of the small arms to try and adjust my sub because it was losing time. I read it was the arm that controls the "isochronism"? now its just not working. any advice?? thanks

      If you are speaking of the “arm that holds the hairspring you may want to gently push it in the opposite direction. Be very very careful. You also may want to look at the hairspring itself to make sure it is free. But only touch it if you are confident that you won’t make it worse. As far as time keeping goes on a Rolex the mainspring and the cleanliness of the watch are what makes the watch run perfect. Adjusting the piece that holds the hairspring is used to adjust beat error which can slow or speed up a watch by effecting the error rate

    How much do you charge to replace a broken main spring in a 1969 Rolex date?

    can the mainspring be replaced without removing the balance?

    • @watchesandjewelry
      @watchesandjewelry  2 роки тому

      Yes. Just remove the bridge over the barrel. If the watch has no damage and is clean, you can sometimes leave the movement in the watch case.
