I've been trying to learn with my acrylic worsted weight yarn and your off thumb technique gave me my aha moment! I also came up with a way to start it in small loops thanks to you!

Oh wow, that's fantastic! Well done for persisting!
How are you finding acrylic yarn? I found it felts/splices poorly most of the time.

It’s a good way to try it out and practice without using more expensive yarn.

@@qltygrl3187 you're absolutely right, if acrylic is what you have to hand, practice with that.
I personally have found acrylic unsuitable for larger/complete projects because of the multiple joins required.

@@YlvaTheRed I just tie regular square knots and weave in the ends. Not the best, but it works pretty well

having problems making it tight enough so that it will actually be warm to wear in our -40F winters. With wool I can shrink and felt, but with cotton I cannot get tight enough,I feel like such a failure

You're not a failure, you're still trying, and that means you'll get there with the right help. What kind of needle are you using, and what thickness of yarn?

@@YlvaTheRed using a horn needle given to me and fishermans wool by lionbrand

    • @YlvaTheRed

This might sound a bit silly, but if you needle is too wide, you won't be able to shrink your work much. If you have a modern tapestry needle (you can usually find these at any craft store), you could try with that instead of your horn one. If your yarn is 10ply (which I think fisherman's is) there should be no problem getting tighter stitches with a standard modern tapestry needle. Let me know if this works for you!

@@YlvaTheRed only had quilting needles at home, and it is a 280 mile trip to town so I went to the woodpile and grabbed a piece of cedar and carved me down a wooden one, it is pretty cute, bit thicker then a tapestry needle! only took me wrecking 6 of em before I figure out to make the hole first and then carve out needle around it LOL, waxed it up with some wax from our bees and so far so good! still way big holes but much smaller and I think all I need is practice!
I appreciate your aid so very, very much!

Nalbinding is truly an international craft, and I'm happy to help English speakers get into it!
