My friend is flying the rectangular antenna, on the RV plan, in his Experimental Cozy IV. The aircraft is composite and the antenna is mounted in the backseat. It works very well at 170 kts in the California skies.
Great video Brian! Have you figured out an option now for inflight internet? I might have missed it in comments but I am also looking for something similar for my passengers. Any advice would be awesome! 😊
So far I’m just using cellular which works ok in rural Alberta. Starlink probably would work now, but it would need some hardware hacking, and they seem to be cracking down on people that use them inappropriately. I know a lot of ocean sailors are getting warnings for using theirs on their boats.
Dishy uses high frequency signaling, so it's very susceptible to things in front of it. Even the face material on Dishy is a special material that's transparent to the higher frequencies. People often report dropouts if they have so much as tree branch 100 ft away on the horizon. People will even get dropouts if an airliner flies overhead between the dish and the satellite. It's a good thought tho!
Yea, starlink moves quickly. The only difference between the round and the square dishes is that the square ones are easier and cheaper to mass produce.
My friend taped the new flat RV Starlink antenna to the top of his plane. Works great on the ground but quits working about 100' above the runway, "network error" Have you tried it?
Are you waiting on the mobile version of Starlink? Or have you built a franken-dishy to jump the queue?

Things move so quickly with Elon. I love how it was basically impossible one week and then totally possible the next.
Planning on doing exactly this in my Cozy Mark IV I'm building :)
Thid didn't aged well hahah but cool vid
Why
@@corradovanaken3553 because planes have been using starlink, boats and cruises too.
Surprisingly good and useful video! Keep it up!

Im using starlink on my flight right now. They now made it possible!
Well done video, no fluff, just good content!
Thanks! I’m slowly learning how to make worthwhile content. ;)
Yikes this did not age well
People kept saying it was impossible. I knew it was possible, but limited by non technical reasons.
I'm assuming they want no solid barrier in front the the dishy? If not, it's small enough to mount in the cabin.

This video is slightly outdated now, no? They use a diff dish that is rectangular and not round.

I want a solar powered vtol drone with a starlink dish! Then I could fly anywhere on the planet and explore from my sofa at home!
I think I would personally still go exploring in person. I love flying anywhere
Starlink just held demo if in flight wifi
