That’s not true; the wealthy make money off of us. Why NOT have a good airport? They want it just as bad. It’s just not worth investing in because we’ve gotten so behind on infrastructure after overworking steel, starting in the 50s. Thus a lot of big city infrastructure is outdated. There’s different policies that can change this, and no one solution is perfect, but it’s about what will incentivize is to invest in an airport as much as is invested in houses or cars, which the American public eats up. Houses and cars, after all, is where lost of the savings are. Why spend on something that isn’t part of your customer’s savings, and therefore, their consumption? You won’t.
Most facilities and events in the U.S. are institutional and barren. They maximize competition and efficiency at the expense of grace, charm and kindness. From our best airports to our premier dog show, our public life smacks of isolation and loneliness. Compare our Purina dog show with Cruft’s in the U.K. It’s extremely hard to project a lack of cameraderie when you have dogs, but somehow we do it, in contrast to Cruft’s which fosters enthusiastic, doggy joy. Could we please make some changes in our priorities to put the fun back in functional?
I agree with you Jane, loneliness is a topic that we should definitely talk about more in society. I actually wrote about this the other day: if you ever find yourself getting lonely, get online and make a bunch of social media pages on sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram and reach out to people that you know, and to people that have similar interest and you’ll start making all sorts of friends. Community events too are fantastic to partake in as well! Blessings to you and anyone that ever suffers from loneliness, but I promise you better days are ahead always. Keep reaching out to people, start making those connections, and watch them flourish.
umop apIsdn that wasn’t the point of her comment, she was commenting on the nature of loneliness in our society and how it integrates into things we do.
In America it's all about the money. Most people could care less about ambience, comfort, art and quality of experience if they can get there 50 dollars cheaper and 20 minutes faster.

Also, LAX is dealing with a small terminal area footprint that was decided upon before most of us were even born. I appreciate the upgrades NYC airports are getting, but they pale in comparison to the ones in Asia. Seems like they are building what should have been built 10-20 years ago
As an expat who flies in and out of Changi and who has recently gone through Newark Liberty, all I can say is that people who use that airport have my sympathy. It’s not so much the airport which is a bit tatty but was perfectly ok....it was the staff. Doesn’t matter how much you spend on an airport, if the people at immigration and security treat you like a piece of filth who is getting in the way of a conversation with their co-workers, it’s not going to leave a good impression.
Singapore, China, Dubai, Hong Kong import their labor from South East Asia for pennies to a dollar with virtually no labor rights. People always love to criticize american airports, atleast the american builders were paid a fair wage among other things.
Also those airports function as hubs for people to transfer to another flight to get to their final destination (anyone traveling to Bali or Thailand from America would know this) so there's an incentive to make those airports luxurious for those who have a couple of hours layover. Here in America we're blessed at least we can catch a flight to almost anywhere in the globe from the nearest major city instead of having to transfer from SFO, LAX or JFK only.
PDX really is the #1 airport in the US. It is very quiet with special carpet to hush the noise. Local musicians provide music/enterainment. Food prices are the same as prices outside airport. Best of all there is direct 1 seat rail access to the core of the city within 40 minutes that costs only $2.50!
Westin Taylor u r quite wrong. A lot of western workers are flying in to work in Singapore. As for Singaporeans they r going to America for holiday. Not to migrate.
Yes ! And they really needed it ! The last one was really tidy , but VERY small and outdated ! Living in Los Angeles , I’m always amazed that almost ANYBODY but LA can get things done like this ! This city is so corrupt . I’ll fly from Burbank airport , but never LA .
Renee Larson-Endsley Awww .. It was such a cute old building ! I think it was concrete block construction and we were surprised it could even have room for security, but it did ! And it was efficient!
MSP is one of the best airports in the US, no doubt. I miss flying out of there. I live in Denver now and despite consistently ranking highly, DEN is pretty annoying. Being one of the farthest airports from downtown means it’s inconvenient to get to. The terminals are too narrow for peak traffic times and there’s no way to get to all the terminals under your own power. You’re forced to cram into a train that is *always* completely packed. There are almost no stairs anywhere, only 1 escalator up and down wherever you go, meaning you’re always stuck behind people with giant suitcases. CVG on the other hand has a walkway that parallels the train as well as multiple escalators up and down. A much less stressful experience than being a sardine until you get to your gate.
Please don't forget... while Governors and other public officials claim credit, please make sure you recognize the urban planners, architects, landscape architects, and contractors who are the true visionaries and work horses for these types of projects. Their skill and expertise is what actually makes these types of projects happen!
I’ve only been to the Indy airport once but I loved how spacious it felt. So many airports don’t have enough seating or even room to move around. I guess that’s what happens when you have the opportunity to build a brand new airport.
AnalogKid82 Come up with a solution to loading an airplane then. I’ll wait. Upgrade the airplane? What’s your solution and cost factors? How many seats per aircraft type? Yield per seat. What impact on ticket prices would that have?
So far the only viable model for flying is the tube with wings model, and that model is slow for loading and unloading. And now people are taking large dogs on board with them! That has to be a disaster waiting to happen.
@@yashathebelgianmalinois348 Though I have some ideas, I don't have the solution. But, I do think a few billion dollars could hire one or more Elon Musk-types capable of coming up with a few ideas. This money could be put to better use for improving NY schools, healthcare, poverty, etc., but, if they're going to invest it in air travel, improving the appeal of one airport is the wrong move. I'm sure it will look incredible, provide the latest in modern conveniences, likely increase airport traffic/revenue, provide more jobs to local residents, and, of course, meet their goal of America competing with other airports around the world. Still, as a passenger, I would much prefer smoother security/boarding/deplaning, faster travel times, and seats as comfortable as the recliner in my living room.

As an expat living in the US for 5 years so far, I noticed that everything here in the US, especially public buildings are designed to be absolutely functional, not to induce comfortableness or human warmth. Some of them, like the universities after the 19th century, are were designed with an anti-protest and mass-controlling notion. While there is an absolute need for U.S. airport infrastructure to be updated, it should be pointed out that the U.S. airline and airport system is vastly larger and vastly DIFFERENT than virtually anyplace else in the world. Our airports are largely built to support DOMESTIC business and leisure traffic, where there is much more competition and margins are thin. This is in contrast to most airports in the world whose service is largely INTERNATIONAL where the frequency/traffic is fundamentally different, and the cost points and margins are higher. This difference impacts both our airlines and airports in virtually the exact same way. In other words, it’s much easier for Singapore airport and Singapore Airlines to be the worlds best when absolutely every flight is international...it’s also basically that countries ONLY airport (of consequence).
Only halfway decent and popular American car brand here in the eu is Ford. All others have failed here. Ford succeeded because they highly adopted to the european market.

As a frequent traveler (3 months out of the year), I could care less about airport waterfalls, Starbucks, lights, stores, restaurants, couches, etc. Plan your trip correctly, and you have zero time for any of that anyway. Precheck, no layover, and you’re at your destination. I don’t know how these people booked travel with such long layovers. How’s that possible? Around the world, I’ve never had a layover over an hour or two (and most of that is walking to the next terminal and checking email). What I care about the most is aircraft seating space. I’m tall and wide shouldered (knees don’t fit anymore) so I have to pay for upgraded seating.

LaGuardia will deliberately be under construction for the next 20-40 years because it's profitable for the construction companies to prolong it. I've been there, I received calls from customers that arrive there, and absolutely nothing has been changed and progress is anything but.
Detroit, Indianapolis and Raleigh all have beautiful airport terminals, as well as appropriate runway infrastructure. LaGuardia can build new terminals, but that sadly won’t solve its runway and taxiway (as well as airspace) limitations that are the real pain drivers.

Jane Hardy dog show a priority? 😂 ok

Unwinding decades of bureaucracy and untangling the complicated entwinement of government and military contractors is totally simple and easy. It's about as easy as trying to punch through a wall made of titanium with your bare fists.

Terrence Bradley Agree about Seattle. Portland’s is great though.
MSP is so great! I've been lucky to fly from there a couple of times on domestic routes with Delta, it's awesome.
Btw, Go Gophers!

I’ve only been to the Indy airport once but I loved how spacious it felt. So many airports don’t have enough seating or even room to move around. I guess that’s what happens when you have the opportunity to build a brand new airport.
I’d rather we upgraded the planes. Loading/unloading like cattle and cramped seats should be a thing of the past.
Amen!!

It's hard not to feel absolutely miserable when you visit an RMV office or walking through a giant parking lot.
