15 Big Restaurant Chains That Filed For Bankruptcy

- Our favorite restaurants are vanishing from sight as worsening economic conditions continue to squeeze U.S. businesses. With shoppers eating out less and tightening their budgets, even big names in the industry are seeing their operations rot from within. Over the past three years, over 160,000 restaurants have been permanently closed around the country, and unfortunately, that trend is still picking up force in 2023.
It’s hard to believe but even the biggest and most successful fast food chains in the world aren’t immune to bankruptcies among franchisees. Just a couple of months ago, Rice Enterprices LLC declared bankruptcy and shuttered all of the McDonald’s restaurants it operated. Serious labor issues involving minors led the franchisee to face a millionaire lawsuit that affected the brand as a whole. Last month, the company announced hundreds of store closings, not only in America, but all across the globe. Some of its formats have become outdated, executives say. The decision was made after a team of board members discussed the growth potential of certain locations and decided to focus on the ones with higher financial returns, excluding struggling stores from its portfolio.
Owned by the same parent company as Burger King, the popular chicken chain Popeyes also dealt with the bankruptcy of one of its biggest franchisees this year. Premier Cajun Kings was founded by Manraj "Patrick" Sidhu in 2018, and by the next year, he had tripled the number of stores he operated, and they generated over $30 million in annual sales. Tragically, Mr. Sidhu passed away in May 2022, and his business was never able to fully recover from the loss of its sole manager. Declining sales, soaring costs, and operating losses forced the franchisee to close a large number of restaurants in Alabama and Tennessee. Some stores were evicted by a landlord, leaving the company with only half of its locations. In March 2023, PCK finally filed for bankruptcy. "This tragic loss, coupled with various macroeconomic factors, has caused tremendous uncertainty and disruption within the business," court documents from the bankruptcy filing read.
Similarly, Chuck E. Cheese has marked generations and gained huge popularity over the decades. Founded in San Jose, California, the pizza chain is a hit amongst kids, but that doesn’t mean things have always been easy for the company. The chain isn’t new in bankruptcy court, with its first filing recorded in 1984 when it was carrying a debt of $50 million in defaulted bonds. Its parent company, Pizza Time Theater decided to seek court protection to avoid corporate destitution. Even though that helped the chain to stay in business, it didn't ensure the chain's long-term survival, especially in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime global pandemic. Only this time around, the company held a $705 million debt. Up until this day, the future of Chuck E. Cheese remains uncertain. But given the size of its debt load, only a miracle can save the chain from filing for bankruptcy again in the near future. When a company files for bankruptcy, it doesn't immediately free itself of all prior financial obligations. A series of financial arrangements need to be agreed upon, and, as a result, a Chapter 11 bankruptcy generally takes between six months and two years to resolve. This means many of these businesses are now sitting in limbo, waiting to be rescued or about to die out. With a recession at our door, it is difficult to see which ones will be the survivors.
That's why today, we decided to list some of Americans' beloved food joints that are reducing operations or going out of business this year.
People don’t want to pay $15 for reheated frozen food that makes you feel sick. Imagine that.

The push of the minimum wages from the Leftist politicians triggered the inflation...

Just 5 bucks for food that makes you sick, right?

Stopped eating fast food about 5 years ago except for an occasional cup of coffee. I’m blown away at what folks are willing to pay for poor quality food. I’d rather go hungry
Driving to NY I had to stay hungry because a $13 whopper meal 😂 that’s steak money

i had to cut back on fast food a long time ago. When I was diagnosed with gout. So no beef..recently I discovered that I get flare ups from potatoes now as well..means no more frenh fries..which in extension applies to potato chip snacks as well. The Kentucky fried has been shit on stick since 2002
Some places $45!!!!
The chicken is usually expired and unsafe to eat unless you buy the most popular, high turnover crunchy chicken. We use to cheat and replace the expiration markers so we didn’t have to throw it out. I saw the assistant manager pick up a chicken breast off the floor and put it back under the warming rack because every piece of chicken has to be inventoried and accounted for and that goes against your work record if there is a loss. Never order a chicken little unless you get the mayonnaise on the side, it will be made fresh and no bacteria growing on the mayo🤢
I really the chicken pot pie at KFC! Well, that’s gone now! Their fries are great but the one where I live doesn’t have inside seating so I have to tsk my fries home - and they just don’t travel well!

I don't envy McDonalds franchisees. They're getting eaten alive, and the product they sell is not desirable. Come to think, I don't eat any of those places... The corporate bean counters have so diminished the quality of the food, it mostly tastes like cardboard... AND THE PRICES!

And tasted better not to mention use to be twice their current size.
Dude: the problem with "whoppers" is not their price: It's the low-rent quality of the product--as well as its stupid name. That's the problem. The food quality is so poor at "that hamburger chain", I feel you're paying to literally poison yourself. Think about that.
I stopped by and wanted to rare treat myself to a egg Mc Muffin. Window gal said "$4.50"! What?? Never again.
These closures are not a bad thing. The food is crap, the service is crap, the prices are outrageous and Americans are overweight. We used to cook at home. It's time we start again!

I work at a big name retail store as a manager and being able to find decent employees is the biggest problem. I'm not surprised at all. The companies may have built too many restaurants to begin with, and a combination of higher prices, declining quality and lack of help are all contributing to their woes. I personally make a point of bringing my own food to eat on the road, as I know what goes into the food.
Don’t forget the rise of minimum wages. That’s majority of the problem.
@@rodleypumpkins4174In the US, it is the government policy of paying people to not work that is the hardest driver.
@@wayneegli8379 That’s definitely a contributor to our current economy. However I haven’t seen any fast food places anywhere around me closed due to no one working Specially after minimum wage was raised again When it got raised maybe a month later all of the food places prices went up. And now because of those high prices these companies are closing shop. And actually you can look up statistics that show the jump in profits for some of these companies when Biden was giving everyone stimulus checks. Fast food correlates pretty well with people who don’t work lol specially the ones who get all of the free money Biden gives out.
Too much salt. You reach a certain age and your Doc will tell you salt has to gooooooo! Trust me.
Good point, I have always thought many of the biggest companies and corporations, which have expanded across the globe had over extended themselves, due to the greed is good attitudes of the bosses. Well, that greed and arrogance is smacking the greedy bosses in the face. When you are at the top, there is only one direction to go - down.
My girlfriend and I skipped breakfast yesterday, because she had a doctor appointment early, after the appointment it was still early, so we decided to stop at McDonald's for a "cheap and quick" breakfast, only to stand there for nearly a half an hour, BEFORE being told to use the now computer kiosk to order our food from!! We don't use machines, like those self check out lane in the stores, so we just LEFT McDonald's and considered out "options" for "where to eat?"!!! We decided Denny's wasn't too far away, and they have all day breakfast....so we drove there, and quickly became disappointed there too!!
Ordering the "Value Slam" meals for both of us, you get ONE egg, and one of everything like bacon, sausage and in my case one slice of French Toast! Hardly seemed like a "value" and the food wasn't even worth the price we'd paid for it, which was almost $35 for what little bit of food we actually got!!
We agreed that next time we'd go to our favorite Mom and Pop joint to eat!! As the last time we were at that place, our meal was nearly $10 cheaper, the food was better quality and YOU GET more of it!!
I now go into a grocery store and get a hot whole cooked chicken for
Less $ than a fast food combo
I refuse to use those kiosks too. I’ve walked out of 2 McDonalds.

I don't see how any of these fastfood joints can keep on staying open for much longer. The food is terrible compared to what it was a couple years back. They can't find good workers and the cost of the food is outrageous for what you get. I prefer to not eat out as much as in the past. I love cooking at home and preparing great homecooked fresh meals anyway. I feel sad for our country that things are so depressed compared to the past. The broad-based Standard & U.S. consumer confidence has sunk to record lows, thanks mainly to inflation. Retail spending, home-building, and manufacturing output all declined and those who drive the U.S. economy, are starting to cut back on discretionary purchases, such as appliances and services. Regardless of our market conditions, however, we should continue to promote savings and smart investments.
Every person is affected by this directly or indirectly. Taking myself for instance, Investments or stocks still retain their values very much but I'm still at crossroads on deciding if to liquidate my $113k worth of stocks or hold on to them cos I'm scared they might lose value.

Also the war in Ukraine are both wake-up calls that stock market crash can happen abruptly in a recession and inflation may rise. Hence, everyone needs a crisis investment plan.
@@theresahv Glad to have stumbled on this thread, I promise to give her a look once i get home and settled.
I think things were headed in this direction even before the pandemic. The pandemic just accelerated the problem. People are becoming aware of all the junk & non food stuff added in. These things are a major contributor to our modern day health crisis. They are little more then empty calories with little if any nutritional value. Because of the pandemic & so many people's sudden reduced or loss of income people were forced to learn or relearn cooking skills. They began to realize that home cooked food made with real food & knowing precisely what is in their food took hold. I'm sure people are also realizing that their health is improving. Hopefully this trend will continue. There are so many nutritious meals people can make at home in the same amount of time it took to go to a fast food joint & that it cost the same or less. Fast food should never of become a way of life. It's ok for an occasional treat but not for everyday subsidence.
Fast food is not cheap neither is home cooked food I can not get out of Walmart for under $100. And that’s with out buying good cuts of meat or any meat. After my last restaurant experience it’ll be some time before wife and I do that again. CRAP!!!
2/3 of a local restaurant chain has closed their doors, only the two remaining restaurants are left and those are next to the interstate. Poor staffing and service is what made us go to Applebees instead but we average $55 including a nice tip for two meals, yikes!
Folks just can't afford it anymore. Rent, utilities, groceries, and wages have just tanked compared to these costs.
Personally, I just don't see an end to this crisis.

These kinds of businesses USED TO provide first jobs for young people. Now some folks seem to think that flipping burgers is an acceptable life career choice and decry the low wages paid for unskilled labor. With the demise of so many fast food restaurants there are even fewer opportunities for youth and low skilled people to build a resume and step up the job ladder.
Rubbish! We have more options, other than all these mediocre fast food joints!
So true now kids just sit on there ass and rot.

Get ready for all in one Super Stores which to me would like a trip to hell! I
Anyone believing these jobs are unskilled has never done them. It takes far more physical work, mental effort, and knowledge of rules and laws to work in fast food than it has in any office or factory job I've worked. Adults have always worked in fast food, often in management roles, but not always. In all my years growing up working in the food industry from the '90s to the early '10s, our staffing was always 50/50 kids and adults. Often older adults with families. My mom made $30k as a store manager in the '90s, which is the equivalent of a little over $60k today. Know what the average store manager wage is today? Depending on the area, as low as $24k and as high as $50k. I was there when the minimum wage in my state became $7.25/hour back in There is a clear and obvious disparity and it isn't with the work force. Wages have not kept up with inflation rates and the lowest-paid workers have always suffered for that fact. It's by design.
The trouble is not and has never been the sort of people who opt to work in those jobs. The fact anyone is so fucking entitled that they think there's anything wrong with working those jobs is despicable. There's nothing wrong with it, and some people don't have the talent or drive to work somewhere else. Some people legitimately just like the job. To try and say these people don't deserve a living wage just because one doesn't respect the job they do and don't care the people up top are making literal billions to do literally nothing makes one part of the problem.
There will never be a lack of jobs for youth and low skill workers. These restaurants are largely floundering right now BECAUSE people don't want to work there for subpar wages. Just about every fast food restaurant in the country has hiring signs up and can't keep staff. No one wants to be under that level of stress and micromanagement just to be disrespected by their bosses, the general public (like in this post), and at the end of every two weeks, their paycheck.
The death of fast food restaurants leaves the field open for mom and pop diners to open back up, which is really kind of the best case scenario. Put the money back in the local economy, not the pockets of billionaire CEOs, trust fund babies, and investors. Stop runaway market capitalism and focus back on the community.

decreasing the size of the various offerings, being forced to greatly increase the salaries of their low/no skilled workers, and then passing the increase in operating costs to the customer, I'm not surprised these fast foods joints are hurting.
Low skilled, no skilled they still need to survive. They need a place to live, food to eat, pay utility bills etc. Just like everyone else & deserve a living wage not a starvation wage.
McDonald's CEO said paying workers $15 an hour won't hurt them. I've even done the math based on their own numbers. They would only need to increase the price of JUST BURGERS by a few cents to make it work. A big part of that is fast food is a volume based business. It wasn't so much the price of the burger, it was how many they sold. The bigger issue was covid and a change and spending patterns...combined with greed. I have growing kids, 2 boys, 10 and 12. I'm a professional cook, so normally I cook at home. We rarely went out to eat. When we did, it was a nice sit down place. For example, we like the Crooked Pint. Burgers there range from $12.99-16.99. They offer a kid's hamburger for $7.99. My boys have been obsessed with Burger King lately. I picked them up some the other day...both got a double whopper with fries and a medium drink...over $30...Granted, 2 of their burger patties is a lot of meat, but 30 bucks for 2 kids is outrageous. (I'm actually looking at their menu now and it says a double Whopper is $11.34? Not sure why the prices are different. Location maybe?) Anyways, the prices of these places are excessive and not inline with what they ACTUALLY need. They are being greedy and people are catching on, which is a big part of why their volume is dropping.
Even here in Saudi Arabia all of the mentioned fast food chains taste different than 3-4 years ago. Their food taste like cardboard now. And the prices are literally increasing daily.
this is honestly a collective issue from the pandemic to labor shortages and people not wanting to work in fast food environments due to a slew of reasons. it’s disappointing to see but i feel like the pandemic jetset those who were already struggling into closures, debt, and bankruptcies. i won’t be surprised to see more businesses shut down unfortunately
I think you want to say PLANDEMDIC
A pandemic gives you about 3 months to get out in front of it and get your act together. We didn’t. Instead we squandered our time quibbling over whether it was a hoax or not. This is the result. Every action or inaction has a consequence. The bigger the error the greater the loss. Some errors in judgement will be unrecoverable.
This is a generational issue. No one wants to work…….not in that age group. I did the Dairy Queen route when I was 16-19…….then went on to get a real job, I’m 56 now…..funny how I managed to survive that fast food

When Corner Bakery opened near us in 2013 you couldn't get a parking space. People were parking in the bank parking next door. They went bankrupt during the pandemic. Now a seafood house opened in the same building.

They were supposed to open a Corner Bakery in my town, but the mall got sold, and the lease price went into the stratosphere and they reneged.
Corner bakery people are stupid, all they needed were to get hooked up with NY Fed and promised them they will promote all Plandemic agenda like forcing customers to do what the narratives are and force employees to get cerveza shot so the grandmas are safe etc etc... unlimited fake dollar will flow created out of nothing and given to them like all entities that were funded including churches, schools during plandemic...but dont worry next disaster is coming soon. Fast food has contributed to the most obese population on earth, perhaps its demise will help to reverse that trend.
Regarding the financial repercussions it must be noted that paying people $15 an hour and still lacking sufficient numbers of employees speaks to the culture of greed and entitlement.
fastfood is not remembering the fact that they're supposed to be cheap food not expensive.
The problem is everything is expensive now. Labor costs, food costs, transportation costs, taxes, etc, etc, etc. Even with these high prices, smaller portions, and lower quality they're still going bankrupt.
It's just going to get worse.
They have to pay expensive for cheap underperforming labor

I think the next big failure is going to be the convenience store gas stations. In the mid-Atlantic area we have Sheetz and Wawa that have built up so many stores that they're going to wind up like Starbucks before long. They've both gotten into food to compete with fast food restaurants and probably are about as good or better than your average McD or BK.
I live in a rural area and we now have 6 each Wawa and Sheetz in my city, and two more being built. I don't know how they're going to survive the coming recession and depression.
Never heard of them out West…

Even crazier...in 2019 I was working in commercial real estate. All B & C-zoned land in Virginia no matter the metro area, was bid up in large part due to the overzealous new store sprees of Sheetz and Wawa, and was going for $1-2 million/acre...let that sink in. Driving by 4 years later, apx. 40% of these sites are still undeveloped!
Wawa started out as a dairy store/deli concept. They had one gas station in Pa in the 80s because they took over a site with pumps The gas station model is new, inspired by competitors in areas they expanded into.
Mannnnn, dont get me started on wawa. Seems like its a wawa every half a mile. They're stretching themselves too thin.
When the Federal reserve keeps raising interest rates it's literally putting pressure on every single human on this planet.

I would rather have inflation than recession
At Low interest rates people can buy houses and cars with cheap money, which they do not own. The reason they raise rates is so people can pay off there debt and cut back spending. And that is what people are doing.
Hopefully Y'all have a safe space to hide in because The Biden Administration is driving America into the ground and they don't care because they live off your tax dollars.

Lot's of Restaurants are Jacking up prices around the Country. they give prices out of their heads now. that's why people rather cook at home.
The stupid thing for these corporations is that their bankruptcies are 100% preventable. They could have consolidated amd focused on locations and services already offered. Instead, they keep trying to open new locations and set impossible-to-meet expectations.
Could Burger King’s issues have something to do with all the employees looking like they just got out of prison?
The veggie pasta a year was $9.80 at Chilis, now its $15+. I always get extra Alfredo and Garlix toast on the side.

I’m not surprise these fast food restaurants are closing, customers expect them to keep the prices low, while they're paying high minimum wage and paying more on ingredients.
Minimum wage isn’t high if you don’t live with your parents 😂
Yep!! It is a known fact that every time wages go up so does everything else. Who was the socialist idiot ( Bernie sanders?) who thought $ 15.00 an hour for jobs that were basically made for teenagers to learn what working at a real job is like ( while still living at home) Also great for retired ppl who needed xtra cash, college kids and housewives to supplement husbands income….the purpose of these jobs was NOT meant to have a living 40 hour raise your family on job!!
When a $6 meal is now over $10, I stopped eating out. It became more expensive. Add a gratuity that didn't exist before and I'm more likely to have a slice of pizza for a couple bucks instead, or use the deli in the grocery store.
A common denominator in the closures is debt. Instead of expanding with profits and avoid the cost of debt, low interest rates encouraged borrowing, only to be hit later with rising debt service costs. This required more money to service the debt, but rising prices reduced sales, so the revenue to service the debt failed to materialize.
It is time to become and stay debt free in times of high cost of debt. Growing locations on debt is dangerous if the cost of debt changes. The customers respond to rapidly rising prices and seek affordable alternatives.
Correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not a financial guy. So... a synopsis, of what you're saying is:
The borrower barrowed at low interest. But over time that interest was adjusted higher, and higher. And then the borrower raised prices to pay debt. And over time, the whole system collapsed. Because the prices were j6st too expensive for their client base.
@@jamesnash6101 No correction needed. The chains with high debt, now have high debt service (Interest) payments. Rising retail prices above the rate of inflation to increase revenue, resulted in lower sales. Do you remember the $6 Wopper meals, and go kink for a buck more? That was the burger, large fries, and large drink for under $10. Now the bare burger without the meal is listed on their website for $9.99. McDonalds had, not sure if still has any size soft drink for $1. The BK price for a soft drink is over $4. Who pays over $4 for just a soft drink? Hit the corner convenience store and get one of any size for under $2 instead. There is always a line at McDonalds and Wndy's, but never a line at Burger King. There is a reason for that, even when when the soft serve is always broken.
Yes, restaurants recently have started to raise prices yet again and probably need to as food is up and up. We were in our local Safeway supermarket and bread $5.99 loaf of Sourdough and same for Rye. The Cheapest whole wheat bread was $3.69 per loaf! Wow. We do not buy regular sandwich white bread loaves or the same "Wheat" that is not Whole Wheat grain.

Apart from the quality issues and price increases that people have noted is the simple fact that there are too many of these outlets.
The quality got worse and the prices higher. I live in Europe, and MCD got kinda deluted what they are actualy selling, and changed the "restaurants". Now each burger is made fresh, that resulted in the fact that MCD is no0t able anymore to give you a meal for 4 peopel where everything is hot, and the waiting times can be 10 -15 minutes. So if we have higher prices, lower quality and longer waiting times, what do they think will happen. No one goes to MCD because they value the brand.....

When fast food restaurants first opened up it was unheard of to have drive throughs. Anyone who drove up was more related to root beer stands. Customers actually walked inside the restaurant. Now they’re too lazy to get out of their cars. At least eating inside would have the ability for repeat orders instead of driving off with food in hand. Having two drive through lines means there’s only fourteen customers waiting. With the four registers they used to have there’d only four at each register meaning people are getting their orders taken faster with the same people fulfilling the orders. I reliably get my food quicker walking inside than waiting in a drive through. They even get the orders right except with customers who expect them to read their minds. Knowing what I know it’s better to close the drive through than the dining room. This applies at practically all restaurants.
