  • For many landscapers and gardeners, a common practice when taking care of your trees and shrubs is fertilization in early spring. But ‪@joegardenerTV‬ has a strong argument to be made that fall is an excellent time to fertilize established trees and shrubs.

Love Milorganite for a healthy lawn and as a deer deterrent. For some reason, the big box stores in our local area stopped carrying Milorganite but we did locate some at the Walmart center. Great product!

I have some baby trees that I put grass cuttings around. Listening to this, I was wondering what the NPK of my grass clippings is. Should I drop a bit of Milorganite on the grass, or do I have enough?

Hi, The grass pieces break down quickly and reduce the amount of fertilizer you have to use by as much as 25%. The best way to determine whether your trees and shrubs need a nutritional boost is to have your soil tested. Your local county horticulture extension office will likely offer this service. If soil testing isn’t an option, look for indicators that your trees and shrubs may need to be fertilized: leaves that are pale-colored, smaller than normal, or dropping at odd times of the year, or twigs and branches that are dead or show stunted growth.
Milorganite has successfully been used for decades when planting and transplanting trees and shrubs. It’s a low-nitrogen, slow-release, non-burning fertilizer. Nutrients are released slowly so trees and shrubs aren’t forced to quickly produce new growth, which can stress plants. You don’t run the risk of burning new, tender roots. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your support of Milorganite. In WA, we recommend checking with your local hardware stores and garden centers for Milorganite in stock or to order for you. On the Ace Hardware and True Value websites, you can search in your area for in-store pick-up. www.milorganite.com/tools-and-resources/store-locator

I talked to my local hardware store and got 20-30 bags at a very reduced price. I tend to get good prices from them when I order in bulk ahead of time. (They make a profit and do not need to stock it for sale.) I say 20-30, because I asked for 20, and they got extra. He did not sell enough so I bought the rest.
