  • This is a 5 speed Mitsubishi unit exhibiting a common failure. Although the wavy didn't cause the pump to fail, it still failed causing a complete burn up of this unit. The most common issue is the low reverse wavy breaking in multiple pieces. Some of these pieces make their way to the pump and get cought up on the pump gears causing it to break. On this unit we see that the gears are in good health but the pomp cover has visible cracks causing loss of pressure.

Got W5A51 Transmission (AWD cousin to F5A51) on my 2002 Mitsubishi Evo 7 GT-A.
I granaded it while doing tuning runs at 19 PSI of boost, about 280 whp at the wheels. These boxes don't like heat and being launched from the stop. Upgrade cooling, that damn reverse wave spring and weld all the planetary gear pins, tune it and it can be very good transmission. So far I got one full track day, max was about 45min of going nuts on a road course then cool down and same over and over, 7 hours of abuse and it was fine. Also change oil on this box religiously, mine is dark after 30k km.

Hi, great video! I have a Santa fe and am pretty sure the wavey broke and it won't go into gear, no forward or reverse, drops RPM but doesn't have enough pressure to move, just all of a sudden, worked fine, parked, next time, won't move. Anyway, I'll take it out and see what happened. Just wondering, can you install an external filter on these? old ones had a spin-on filter, just wondering if you could tap into the casting where the spin on used to be and plumb lines to a remote filter mount, have you ever seen this done?

I have 2002 Lancer evo GTA with about 100k on the clock, a few months ago I heard a loud crunching from the trans heading down my driveway. Upon inspection I was told it was direct planetary assembly, unable to get the right part I found out the F5A5A from the US eclipse 3.8 v6 and Galant is basically a FWD version and most internals can fit. Fast forward to the present I have the F5A5A trans with the bell housing from the evo and evo torque converter fitted.
My issue is that when the car is shifting from 2nd to 3rd there is about a 1.5 - 2 sec delay, its like you're driving and the car applies the brakes then shifts or there is engine braking like when going down a hill. 1st to 2nd, 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th are all fine along with the backing down from all gears. Whether I
drive in auto or manual mode it always does the same thing when shifting. We've tried the valve body of the eclipse on the trans and the evo's valve body, we've also swapped sensors. The fluid is fresh and is full, the only other option is the torque converter but since the eclipse's own is bigger we haven't
gone that route. I'm really hoping its not the torque converter because after searching for months I have gotten no leads on finding one.

***** hiram can you please give me the part number for the forward clutch in spanish(tambor de avance) of the transmission f5a51 PLEASE i need it now

Sometimes you need to retune the shifting. I had slightly longer delay after rebuild of my box as well. Retuned it and it shifts faster, you need welded planetary pins for an aggressive tune.

The low/rev wavy in mine broke into 5 peices. One piece i found under the filter, the rest just stayed under the plate

Is it possible to use a different manufacturer's transmission to another car? I have a 2002 kia sedona and same thing had happen no forward no reverse, no movement at all. Could it also be the same problem as your video?

I'll never buy a Mitsubishi automatic again.
My W5A51 has failed twice in 2 years - and when it starts to go it doesn't just lag or slip, it locks the entire drive-line and anchors the fucken car.
These transmissions will get you goddamn killed. And that is with the updated wave spring!

The cooler is restricted, you need to bypass the radiator and install an external cooler. That is a very common problem with those units. The planets gets fried.

@@AutomaticTransmission It's in a Legnum VR-4, I pulled the internals out via the passenger wheel well and bought a rebuild kit with all new plates & clutches. But I can't get the planetary back in because the internal shaft has dropped out of position. I'm gonna try to force it in with a ratchet strap. I've got an external cooler, do I bypass the radiator completely or run the fluid through both?

This!!! also weld your planetary pins so that it doesn't tare itself apart.@@AutomaticTransmission
Mine has plannetaries with welded pins, replaced clutches, tuned and with large 19 row Setrab cooler/Fan combo.
So far survived one track day with some heavy abuse. Need an oil change after 30k km, starting to shift slower.

@@IpoopThere4IAM bypass radiator completely if you're in warmer climates. It's there to warmup your transmission faster when it gets colder.

Average price to rebuild an automatic F4A51? Or maybe just to get the wavy replaced. I've been reading about it now that I got a Stratus Couple, kind of scary!

I've got Hyundai XG30 with the same transmission.
I'd say it shits fine except one thing which is quite annoying and disturbing. When it gets to shift to 4th the shift is quite harsh and causes some vibration for a moment. It doesn't appear as signle shock but more like wave as if you drove over rough surface for a second. It only appears when throttle is applied more than 30-40%. When you drive slowly gently with light application of the throttle the shift is OK and imperceptible. Anyone happend to have similar issue?
