Really impressed by David Anton matching Magnus move for move in a difficult endgame where he was down a pawn and Magnus had two connected passed pawns with a bishop. I thought Magnus would grind it out but David definitely earned a lot of respect.

It’s classical chess, which has generous time controls (in this case, 100 minutes for 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes after that with 30-second increments), so one game can go on for a long while.

Fun fact: According to the engine, Magnus had one single inaccuracy by missing that rook move Agadmator pointed out. This inaccuracy turned this from a winning endgame for Magnus in a draw. Crazy how one sinlge slight inaccuracy in a 69 move game can make the difference between a win and a draw.

Gawd. Most of us amateurs worry about losing material, getting checkmated out of nowhere and missing such things and/or making mistakes when we try to calculate 3-4 moves ahead (at most). Realising how on championship level players also worry about positions that result in a draw, although at first prompted a young bull reaction out of me, like "someone has to win-this should be disallowed-change chess rules so that fewer draws can happen", thinking about it more, made me appreciate both the intricacies of the game, the players, and the game too, for a draw is very much a part of it. I would observe that it does make a difference on how its drawn, i.e. its different if a player reaches out a hand and the other accepts it, than for example when sometimes engines, trying to find the best move for each side, end up in 3-fold repeition of position(? definition of draw in chess iirc). Indeed it is the calling of the chess player to mind both space and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces, and avoid such draws, as this type of draws are not much different than checkmate either, which is also defined from the available space on the board and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces. Thank you Agadmator. Well done to the young gun and always a pleasure to watch Magnus play (to me at least - not that I could appreciate the depth of such a game but I believe not all was lost to me, as I am sure other players better than myself found and will find this game both educational and enjoyable)

There is an interesting line for black at 11:36. Instead of bishop moving away, give a check with black rook on h5. This threatens white rook, which is being in the same row of the king. So only way is to defend with the black knight on f5. Now black can defend its bishop by further attacking the knight, by placing it on d7. The best trade for white will be to safeguard its rook by attacking the black bishop on a7. This will further pin the black king.

Lot of people asking about 11:34. If Rh5+ he can block with the knight and when the pawn captures, rook captures Bishop on a4.

@11:35 IMHO What if Magnus had given check with rook on H5. The only way for David to save his Rook would have been to put Knight in between. Magnus could have taken the Knight with the pawn. David would have the option to take either take Magnus' Bishop or lose another pawn. Ultimately, Magnus would have been up a pawn, with David only relying on his lone rook.

Nf5; gxf5; Rxa4 it will be a trade and David will have more advantage coz Magnus traded Knight for Bishop

It will be theoretical draw. As black will have rook & pawn vs rook... at this level they would know how to draw it. So if you would try to win you have to save the bishop first and see if you can take advantage of the extra pawn.

question: at 05:34 "You could have also gone bishop a3" is a mistake right? from what I see (and partially tested) is that it looses a rook against a knight. Please let me know if I am missing something

Nf4 comes with check so no time for ... Bd7. Instead ... gxf5 then after Rxa4 black has ... fxe4+ if then Kxe4 then ... Rh4 wins the white rook, so it looks like black is up two pawns? The e pawn will eventualy fall and the R+p ending is likely a draw since the pawn is on the h-file

Rh5 is worth considering at 11:35. White would need to block with Nf5+. gxf5 Rxa4 fxe4+ and white cannot capture back with the king due to skewer from Rh4. I think that gives black better chance to win the game.

At 5:36 you made a mistake Agad - he cannot go to a3 or b4, because then Knight to f2 forks the two rooks and the pawn on e4. So white shouldn’t move his bishop out of the g1-h7 diagonal. I think what Guijaro played was the best move.

Bishop if placed on a1, a8, h1, h8 Or anywhere on the long diagonals, then it can cover a max of 7 squares and it would be placed on the 8th one. Where as a centralized knight can cover 8 squares and it would be standing on the 9th one! Still many say that bishop is better than knight cuz it covers more squares. I feel that it's more abt knights ability to fork and bishop's ability to pin and hence bishop is better cuz a pin can be made to stay in a position for a longer time than a fork! Anyone else feels the same?
