- In this video I take you to the infamous Spahn Ranch located in Chatsworth California, formerly known as the home of the Manson family. It is now a beautiful public park but much dark history remains behind and come along as I explore the property with a Manson family expert.

Spahn Ranch, also known as the Spahn Movie Ranch, was a 55-acre movie ranch in Los Angeles County, California. In 1947, Lee and Ruth McReynolds purchased 55 acres of property from Dr. Atkins (Dr. Sharon M. Atkins purchased the property in 1928). Lee built some movie sets (a western town) next to his Trading Post on the property to catch some overflow from the very successful Iverson Movie Ranch. In 1953 the 55 acres was sold to George Spahn and became known as the Spahn Ranch. George Spahn added more sets and rental horses and it became a popular location for horseback riding among locals. With mountainous terrain, boulder-strewn scenery, and an "old Western town" set, Spahn Ranch was a filming site for some scripts, mostly B movies. No longer in use, the entrance to the historic ranch was at 12000 Santa Susana Pass Road (street numbers have since been changed) of the Simi Hills and Santa Susana Mountains above Chatsworth, California. Now part of the Santa Susana Pass State Historic Park, Spahn Ranch is notorious for having been the primary residence of Charles Manson and his followers, the "Manson Family", for much of 1968 and 1969.

I got hooked after reading "Helter Skelter" in 1981. I moved to Chatsworth in 1983- lived on Devonshire- and walked up to the 10050 Cielo Gate around midnight on an August night. All you could hear was crickets.... And to this day when I hear crickets at night all I think of is that Gate. I literally lived a few blocks from Spahn, and never realized it. Nobody cared or talked about the subject.... People who visited me were more interested in "Bad News Bears" sites!
Its ironic that without the Manson connection none of us would even know such a beautiful place existed. Im blown away that this area has not been developed after all these years, and am thrilled to hear it has been designated a state park. I was struck by its beauty when I saw the documentary "Manson" by Robert Hendrickson. This place is on my bucket list Thanks for taking us along : )

Wow interesting I used to eat there at the munch box not knowing I might have sat at that same spot where the nutty Charlie sat.😳 But the burgers and fries were delicious 😋

I just discovered your channel Scott and I love it! I was just at the Alcatraz East Crime Museum in Pigeon Forge, TN and they actually have Charles Manson’s guitar! The whole story of Manson is weird but fascinating to me…the whole connection to The Beach Boys I knew nothing about until I went to that museum.

This is a place I have always wanted to go and don't think it will ever happen so thanks to you I can finally see it in detail! If anyone has never checked out his music, Charles had one hell of a voice and I encourage all of you to listen to some manson songs. Also if anyone doesn't know Guns n Roses covered a Charles Manson song called look at your game girl on there album "The Spaghetti Incident" its a hidden track starting at 2:17 in the last song on the album which is I dont care about you. Axl used to rock a Charles shirt on stage in the 90s!

When I was a kid, the Santa Susanna Pass Road was the only way into our town (Simi) from the east, I vividly remember all those hippies and the bikers that used to hang out there. We used to see them dumpster diving the grocery stores all the time...

Another time I rode my bike down the pass and when I got to the ranch at the bottom I stopped to feed the horses. I was feeding them the good grass from outside the fence when this guy came running across the fenced in area hollering at me to get the F outta there, so I got on my bike to head back up the hill. After they were arrested I saw Charlie on the news and told my mom that he looked like the A hole that ran me off that day...Maybe I should have started with that story?
We lived near the Ranch in Simi Valley. My kids used to play around there, without me knowing I might add.
Alot of the old western were made there also Little House on The Prarie.
I hope Manson is rotting in hell

Hi Scott I remember about that I have seen the movies on about it read the books. I think at first they gave them the death penalty first and than they decide to give them live in prison . I know they went up for to see about getting out but people knew they were not going to get out. I remember went the story come out about Susan Atkins passed away with brain cancer. She married a lawyer . Thank you. You are amazing .

In high school we use to call it stonners den. We use to ditch school and go up to the caves.
I got really interested in this helter skelter and Manson family last year having watched another video on it really strange scenario, really interesting seeing what's left of Spahn ranch another great video scott maybe the filming locations from once upon a time in Hollywood at some point? Carnt wait for that film I'm a huge Tarantino fan! 👌👍
I’m definitely hoping to do some of those the next time I’m in Los Angeles . They were filming parts of it while I was there last year but had already wrapped by the time I was there this year twice. Would have been really cool to see. Can’t wait for the movie ! Thanks David !
the locals broke the Manson rock and rubbed out all the names. i went threw the remains on the buildings and got a couple souvenirs . Then walked to far side where the movie set was and saw the junk cars. then drove to the Tate residence. Its very surreal when you actually visit it in person.
There was a bit of junk at the bottom of the hill near the old hay wagon but I couldn’t tell if it was Manson era or later. I was very surprised how so much seemed to still be there after 50 years.
@@SCOTTONTAPE there was no later, they leveled the place very soon after manson was put away. it might predate the Manson era. the fire pole was Manson era, the wagon, no one knows for sure, but Manson did use it. the store I was able to get a peice of the sign, nothing much but its still a relic to me. I grabbed a piece of melted glass. i took some gravel and put it in a coke bottle with Spahn Ranch soil lol. I got a couple more odds and ends that are worthless but still Manson era relics

I have been obsessed with Charles Mason and what happened ever since reading "Chaos" by Tom O'Neill. It is a very good book.

@@SCOTTONTAPE ahh you missed out. there is the car Manson used to drive around the ranch in there, i think it was a VW. I had a guided tour, thats how I was able to see everything and get info which 905 of escapes me now.

I went to Chatsworth High School (1989-1992) it was approximately 3 miles away from Spahn Ranch. I always found it creepy. Especially when the sun was going down! 🌤🌤🌤

Read Tom O'Neill's book. Bugliosi let the cat out of the bag about Manson, whoxs real name was Charles Milles Maddox-Scott, that using both parens last name. Manson was his stepdad's name.

The name of the grocery was Gateway Ranch Markets. Which oddly enough was owned by the LaBianca's.
My mom loved the Manson family/tate story we even took the tour of the Tate house etc in 2008

Some of that other guys info was incorrect. Dennis Wilson did not live where the Tates lived. The agent owned the house and rented it to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. Dennis z tually lived at the ranch with the Mansons. According to the Beach Boys Book.
Yes Rudolph Altobelli owned the property and rented it out to various people over the years. Did Drew say Dennis Wilson lived there? Cause I know we were talking about Terry Melcher the producer who lived there before Sharon and Roman. I had never heard that Dennis lived at the ranch tho
@@SCOTTONTAPE sorry I was remembering wrong. They moved into his house (without his permission) on Sunset strip. At first it was great then at the end of the summer it got old. Dennis couldnt get them out of his house so he moved out and left them there. They say he carried the guilt of the Tate murders until he died because he introduced Melcher and Manson and when Melcher wouldnt help Manson he ordered the people on Cielo Dr killed not knowing Melcher didnt live there anymore. Sorry I was wrong.

The Box Canyon entrance to my property is about 1 mile from the Santa Susanna entrance for the former Spahn Ranch.
Do a story on a cult that lived in Box Canyon in the 50's , one member set off a bomb and killed a bunch of his fellow cultists.
I may have been at a dealer's home, in the high desert area, where 3 of the Manson family, one girl was very pregnant, came to purchase acid. Upon questions by the dealer, to the 3, we may have found out that they wanted the acid to give to the soon to be new born, and themselves, because they believed in giving kids acid to enlighten them, which was why, it is my understanding, everyone took it back then. We may have been floored because even as kids, maybe on our own road to enlightenment, we could/would not condone that BS. The dealer may have yelled at them for their BS and kicked them out.

Interesting. But he could easily be categorized as a hippie due to the time period he was active and on the streets. What he considers himself doesn’t really matter. But at least we can agree he was a psychopath?
I have a comment, but not a retort, as there is a philosophical quandary here.
Charles Manson is a off kilter/bad person as judged by his deeds, which are so far outside the norm that one can make a legitimate assessment. The burden of proof on his involvement has been achieved, so it does not matter what he claims with regard to those deeds.
When a man in a woman's clothes claims to be a woman, what should we say about that? Do we honor an absurd opinion which conflicts with reality? When a man in woman's clothes competes in athletics as a woman, what should we say about that? Western countries are new to this game. Countries with a history of this just created a new category, such as the ladyboys in Thailand, and everybody knows about the caveats of that category. They are men, everybody knows it, their ID reflects it, but they get to act like women and nobody has a cow about it, but no sports.
What about hippies vs beatniks? Not all such public appearance or presentation issues have such high stakes (as gender). Do you like gothic music or darkwave? Are you hispanic or black? Are you a preppie or a jock? Can one be both? Why would anyone want to be either?
How much do you have a right to assess others from superficial characteristics. I have charisma, and I don't always dress like a bum, so I have been called gay a few times by doofuses I knew almost assuredly had fewer females and/or lower quality females than me. I laughed. Just because I was assessed with a moniker by an ill-informed dolt does not mean it was true, or that their opinion had any value.
But if push comes to shove and nobody stands to be harmed, i think self-assessment is to be honored.

The one I show in the video? That wagon? If you are on the spot where the ranch used to stand , turn south and it’s down the hill through some thick brush. I can't help but wonder what happens to the famous criminals when they die. Like where is Manson buried and Ted Bundy are they in unmarked graves or what? I don't recall ever seeing a video of any graves of this type but they must have put them somewhere.
