    What do you breed to get a witblit ?

  • @kenjiro2676
    @kenjiro2676 4 роки тому +14

    For any breeders out there, make sure your animals, before making them breeders, are the healthiest animals possible. Even genetic defects that are hidden within the animal should be maintained, you want the healthiest and most beautiful strains possible, with such a limited import population, this means there is no more genetic diversity. So whatever animals we have are what we work with. Hamsters for example, are so irresponsibly inbred that they can now have type 1 or 2 diabetes, for reptiles this isn’t a problem but that is only because reptiles are long lived and are generally robust.

    • @jaykrizzle
      @jaykrizzle 3 роки тому +2

      It's a problem in reptiles too. Bearded dragons in the US are showing signs of inbreeding depression

    • @kenjiro2676
      @kenjiro2676 3 роки тому

      @@jaykrizzle that is true. There aren't any imports from australia anymore. It is probably worth outcrossing using captive bred dragons with the wild color phenotype to those more inbred morphs.
      It is even worse for the aquarium hobby since they dont seem to understand that inbreeding should be avoide if possible.
      Thanks for commenting.

    • @jaykrizzle
      @jaykrizzle 3 роки тому +1

      @@kenjiro2676 that sounds like crested gecko hobby where it is a common misconception that reptiles are practically immune from the effects on inbreeding. Very unscientific mentality that will cause a big problem with new Caledonia geckos soon, I predict.

    • @kenjiro2676
      @kenjiro2676 3 роки тому

      @@jaykrizzle I like this conversation.
      As people begin to notice, I am hopeful that people aim to get some wild specimens into the hobyy to bring back some much needed genetic diversity. I don't know which reptile has it worse, the crested gecko or the bearded dragon. I know the the founding population of the crested gecko in the hobby was very small to begin with, I haven't done any research yet for dragons.
      But for animals that are pretty inbred, they are still relatively healthy. Most good breeders are heightening their breeding ethics as to only breed from healthy specimens and tracing lineages. I think this is what is saving(or postponing the inevitable need for new blood) the already inbred gene pool of both animals.

  • @iamablockofcheese1550
    @iamablockofcheese1550 3 роки тому

    I have a Dunner leatherback with hypo hex genes her name is Noodles and she has some orange she three months old she’s got top health I have her train to be very friendly so when at the vet she will run around and smell she bites on command and so has a forty gallon! I’ve always wanted a bright yellow citrus beardie. Also I have to complement the beautiful dragons you used as examples

    Can some one tell the morph of my beardy by a description?: At first from the store way more white than the rest of the shop beard as white as cement days later her beard gets orange the back darkens at one point I saw her beard getting a tiny bit black then today I saw her back and head beard included were darkening her beard stayed orange tho can some one tell me the morph or species?
