Light “faking” his emotions at his father’s death is a myth. According to Tsugumi Ohba in Volume 13, that was the last time Light felt any emotion.

A lot of people are talking about how Mikami “betraying” light…. But the real betrayal was when matsuda found out light was Kira.. matsuda loved light and never wanted to believe he was Kira. The amount of pain and rage matsuda felt after finding out light was Kira is what made matsuda go mad at the end of the show. Matsuda was fucking underrated he was a real ass one.

      @TayoEXE Рік тому +18

@@amanijaz5338 Matsuda got key information on Yotsuba despite his oftentimes incompetency, but he served a purpose as the optimist.
He is the opposite of the Devil's Advocate trope in which he served to pull the strings away from suspicion toward why Light should be trusted. The contrast here between everyone's suspicions and trust helps drive the narrative on morality and asking the questions. Would a morally good person, as Matsuda believed so strongly Light was, do any of those things? The pessimist immediately says that it's more than possible for anyone, no matter how they appear, to be a morally evil person. The optimist, however, believes and defends the idea that a person, no matter how cornered or how bad it looks, can be just the person they say and appear to be. If it had been anyone else other than Light, Matsuda's willingness to see the best in a person and their intentions could have been well placed trust and faith.
When Matsuda went ballistic after Light's revelation, he wasn't just heartbroken and furious, his whole perspective of humanity was just completely shattered. His faith was misplaced unfortunately, and this is a reality of the world at times. There are people you can trust and those you cannot, but both of these types of characters are necessary to help illustrate that spectrum of reliability.
Matsuda's role isn't huge, but it serves an important purpose in showing honestly just how evil and corrupt Light had become. Light, no matter how initially noble his intentions were, had done so much evil trying to cover up his trail. Manipulating two women's feelings for him and one's feelings for her lover, whom he also killed, sending his father to his grave for his own misdeeds, murdering innocent after innocent with no regret, etc. Light did such an impeccable job of putting on a facade, but even when he was slipping, Matsuda's misplaced faith in him was necessary to show just how far off the deep end he had gone. Matsuda was most upset about his father, not just betraying Matsuda's trust but his own father's life. Light's father made the conscious choice to not use the Death Note, and Matsuda saw him as the most trustworthy and noble figure in the task force. Light, his son, naturally would appear to hold the same values. For him to do such a thing to his own father, it's like such a knife in the back I can't help but feel just like Matsuda at the end. Light was no longer morally questionable. In light (pun intended) of Light's absolute betrayal of his own supposedly beloved family and everyone else, the audience can't help but feel like Light really is absolutely corrupted and heartless by the end.
TLDR; Sorry for the essay, but basically, Matsuda does serve a purpose in my book, albeit not necessarily a huge one, but a significant one. The series is better for having him in it.

There was an epilogue released showing that the world actually got worse than before Kira showed up. Matsuda even asked his fellow task members if they did the right thing since crime was at its highest worldwide, wars started again, and public descent was abysmal. I think this was the mangaka's way of reaffirming that Light was meant to win. Light literally made the world a better place, but the government wanted the control that Light has taken from them.

    For your issue with Mello:
He (and everything else in the second half) have A LOT more screentime in the manga. They skipped a whole mini arc with him and let out lots of his moments, even one more moment where he talks with Near over the phone to get information out of Mogi. Not to mention more of Light's true colours shine through in the second half.

It's so strange because when I read through the manga a couple years back, it seemed like everything up until L's demise was pretty much there--about as faithful of an adaptation as you could want. Then after L's death, it went from a 9 or 10 out of 10 anime to like, a 7/10.

    • @sassylittleprophet
      @sassylittleprophet 2 роки тому +40

I agree with you on this. The reason why is because I started bawling when Light was crying when his dad died. In spite of having just wanted his father to kill Mello, I felt like Light was genuinely grieving his father. I felt like I was actually seeing Light, not Kira.
I also think that's partly why Light (in my opinion) seemed to dive right into being Kira, and why he isn't Light again until his demise. It's like he can't be Light again, it's too painful. Speaking from experience, you don't want to be yourself or to feel your emotions when you lose family members. It's sometimes necessary for survival to switch to numbness or apathy, and more often than not, your brain does it for you, it's not a conscious choice, it just happens.

Sadly, Light wasn't crying over his dad's death. He was crying over the fact he didn't get the name with the shinigami eyes from his dad before he died.
Most people don't want to believe such because that makes Light a scum bag, but the truth is he truly didnt care about his dad. He only cried in that moment because he didn't get what he wanted, and now had to do more work.
"No, no, NO!" Light shouted. Everyone around him, nurses and doctors said "That poor boy. :("
Meanwhile Light: "Great! Justttt great. Now how am I gonna get that name? All that work for nothing! Dammit! F you dad! F u! 😡😭😭😡"
^^^Light is truly that evil. People want to believe he has goodness in him, but he doesn't. He doesn't care about his dad at all.
This is proven at the end of the anime where Light says "you mean (says dad's name, sorry I can't remember it). That fool!"
And his detective friend (the one who shoots Light) looks at him devistated "You really didn't care about your dad? You b*stard!"

In my analysis, in the end of the anime, Light had gone through the 5 stages of grief upon being found out and was done for.
Denial: Of course throughout the series, Light would deny that he is Kira. In the end, his denial reaches to it's peak where he denies that he is wrong with his ways. After near's speech, Light thinks that everyone are fools.
Anger: In a fit of rage, Light Yagami tries to kill Near. Logically, best case scenerio, he won't survive as there are many others who can and will kill/apprehend him. But he tries anyway and fails. He screams out for Matsuda to kill them all but fails to convince him.
Bargaining: Upon getting shot down even more and being left in a pool of blood, Light begs for Mikami to write everyone's names, even though he is already aware that Mikami lacks an actual Death Note. It is here that he really is desperate, trying to find anything that can save his life. As he breathes in panic, he calls out for Misa and Takeda, only to remember that he had tossed them aside, with the latter being straight up dead. In his thoughts, he wonders what he must do.
Depression: As Light runs away in his desperation, he starts thinking/hallucinating about his younger days, showing how decent he and his life were before he started using the Death Note. At then climaxes with him seeing his younger self passing by, a self that Light could now only dream of living as. But now, he can only try to flee for his fleeting life for a few moments. Eventually, he is given a heart attack and realizes that his death is sealed.
Acceptance: Since he is dying, all Light can do is lay down and calmly wait for the last second of life to pass. In his final moments, he sees a vision of L standing above him, showing him that in the end, L had won. At last, Light eyes close and he passes away.

One thing to add about Light vs L in terms of intelligence, if you think L is smarter, that is not a problem. There are plenty of arguments and evidences for him being smarter than Light. However, if you think L is smarter because he almost caught Light despite him having the advantage, then no, Light did not have that much of an advantage compared to L.
"A criminal has to be lucky all the time, every time. A cop has to be lucky one time, any time." - idk who.
This quote perfectly sums up the situation and the fact that L and Light were on an even playing field.
Light had the Death Note, a magical notebook that could kill anyone by writing their name. And that's it. That's all he had.
L, on the other hand, had the ENTIRE WORLD's police force to work for him, including FBI, CIA, NPA, etc.
He has the fact that no one knows his name, no one except Watari knows his face, and the fact that he is the world's top 3 detectives all at once.
Light mainly killed inside Japan, which was a dead giveaway that he was in Japan and that he was Japanese, so L knew that. Light knew that L exists. He did not know anything else about L at the time. In fact, if L had not gone on the offensive, there was no way for Light to find and kill L.
On top of the fact that for criminals, once their method of doing crimes, or clues to their abilities are revealed, the police know more and more, on top of there being extras if the previous ones die. The information never disappears, and everyone from that point onward knows how to deal with such a criminal. While for criminals, it's not like there is an endless supply of them that could just take over for one another.
L had to narrow down Light's identity down from the entirety of Japan to Light and Light alone.
Light had to narrow down L's identity down from the ENTIRE WORLD to L and L alone, while not being able to move freely due to his family and stuff, on top of the fact that if he does ANYTHING suspicious, the police would notice.
I would say Light would have a harder time finding L than L does finding Light. All L has to do is search inside Japan, root out unlikely suspects, and go from there. For Light, where does he even start? He has NO CLUE who or what L is, there is no info on him ANYWHERE. The only chance he has is for L himself to provoke him the way he did in the anime.
Light did not have the advantage, or, if he did, he did not have a big one.

Great analysis, but there's one detail that I think could be described better. In the manga, the beginning is titled "Boredom" rather than "Rebirth", and this is because Light and Ryuk were both bored at that point in time. In Light's case, it was because he had nothing to test his genius intelligence enough. Light's motivation was to sate that boredom; it wasn't merely a narcissistic desire to become a god, with his ideas of justice just being lies to himself and to the world. There's plenty of evidence that Light did genuinely care about what he thought was justice even when he became Kira, such as how he was fastidious about how Kira's world-views were represented to the public. Light thought that killing wasn't good, but when he decided to use his Death Note, he had been thinking misanthropically and he had already killed two people to see if the Death Note was legitimate, so on top of his boredom and how he genuinely had brilliant capabilities that most people don't have, he decided to internally reject his former identity and he figured that he was suitable to be the divine judge, exempt from his moral compass. This made him devious and cold, solely focused on his goal and the satisfaction of sating his boredom, even if it meant killing innocent people for what he thought was the greater good. Of course, there are many reasonable standards that regard Kira as evil, and ultimately Light was just a human, regardless of his genius intelligence, so his aim for divinity was futile.

That's a yes after L learned about notebook existance and how it works. I can literally see L sentencing Light and then continue using notebook himself just to play with the world and satisfy his curiosity. Light sucummed to the Deathnote so why L would not? Unlike Light that wants to become justice, L already is oficially in the Justice system that goes above Police, FBI CIA and more. There's no one to stand in his way. Some SPK members would threathen to leave but L would probably kill them to keep the notebook existance hidden.

Years ago, I also classified Light as a psychopath because he had all the characteristics of a classic psychopath. I thought he felt nothing for anyone, even his family, and only saw them as tools. However, in hindsight, I’d say Light wasn’t faking his emotions towards his father’s death at all. I’d even be bold and say that was the catalyst for his downfall. After his father’s death, he had slip-up after slip-up. Though he still kept the cool mask on, there was this reckless, erratic vibe about him that just felt so…off. From a narrative standpoint, I think Light’s father grounded him. He wanted so much to believe in Light’s innocence and humanity that when he died, it was the moment Light fully disconnected from all emotion and became “God”.
I’m gonna say something even braver here. I don’t believe Light would have actually killed his sister if it came down to it. This is not me trying to make him sympathetic or woobifying him. I fully acknowledge (and love) Light for the villain that he is. But while rewatching DN, I noticed that when Light was about to write Sayu’s name down, his eyes filled with real, raw emotion. Even before that, he looked visibly upset at the notion that he might have to execute his sister. And yeah, we can argue that killing her would’ve made him a suspect (since he actually did say this) and that’s why he ultimately didn’t, but we know Light is a hypocrite and lies to himself constantly to excuse his own actions. Him saying that felt like him trying to convince and give that goal-driven objective part of himself a reason NOT to kill Sayu. So he can justify not killing her to Kira, to tell himself her death wouldn’t be beneficial to his grand plan. I prefer to see it this way (lol) I just love the dichotomy between “Light” and “Kira”.
And while he did destroy his family in the end, I think he wasn’t as unfeeling about it as we originally believed.
His little amnesia moment showed what he would’ve been like if he didn’t get the death note: a genius kid with strong ideals; just like his father. He would’ve still been bored, but he would’ve lived a relatively normal life. The characteristics that made him seem like he would’ve always turned psycho regardless of the DN to us, in hindsight, didn’t actually necessarily make him a psycho. He was smart, bored and disconnected from the world, charming when he needed to be. But he was also a 17 year old boy. Finding the notebook twisted his ideals and started him down a path of destruction. Because what can you expect if you gave a teenager that kind of power? He hated losing, and that streak was exacerbated by the death note. He’d come this far, there was no turning back.
In the end, I think Light didn’t even actually want to become the god of the new world or whatever. He was a bored, idealistic child who stumbled upon a great power and played around with it, testing what he could get away with and eventually becoming corrupted by all that power. That’s all. When L and his father died, he had no challenge and nothing to tie him back to reality. He was aimless. He kept reaching for this goal of becoming God just for the sake of it, because he’s come too far to stop. He would NOT lose now.
He wasn’t always a psychopath, and it’s not as if he would’ve become one regardless. He certainly had the makings of one, but his story is about how power can corrupt humans, even if they think they can’t be corrupted. Despite the god complex and inhumanity, Light was ironically the most human character of that anime, representing the worst parts of humanity. Begging, crying, fearing death. He was hypocritical. He wanted everything. He wanted nothing. He can sacrifice anything, he hesitates with his family. He was so incredibly mortal.
That’s my new analysis of his character at least.
Regardless, his character remains iconic and interesting, so much so that I’m still trying to analyze him to this day lmao. One of the greatest anime protagonists for sure!

He's not a god, he's just a fallen human. The author confirmed that Light loved his family from the start. He won't intentionally kill his father , Sayu was also the person he wanted to protect the most and also someone Light couldn't lie in front of her, and the one he loves the most. For Light, his family is worthy of his new world. He can't deny his feelings, though he chooses reason to reject emotion. His father's death greatly influenced his thinking, also someone Light respects , his dialogue with Matsuda is proof. His boredom is very different from Ryuk's. It's not because he's bored that he uses DN. At first, only a young person was curious about a strange object, of course no one believed that it could kill people, Light considered it a ridiculous joke. Touching a potentially existent murder weapon caused a psychological shock and was about to give it up. However, is that he will never accept that he kills people himself, his quality is severely affected. Along with that, is his lofty ideals that have raised and built him away from the murderous mentality. For the most part he can justify his actions, he doesn't want to lose and he was well aware of how evil Kira's actions were. However, those things undeniably Light have the purpose of wanting the world to be good. Although it becomes fanatical and self-destruct. After all that he explodes at the end is everything he has endured. When he decided to confront the whole world to make his good world. And ultimately failed because of himself.

No, The chapter where Soichiro dies is called "excellent acting" showing that Light did not feel anything about his father's death and is not even worried about him.
Regarding his sister, the guy from the first episodes says that he will kill his family if they get in the way, and also in the light scene he is simply nervous because he doesn't want to hand over the notebook, this one doesn't show any real emotion about it, ligth actually deceived himself by saying that he also did it for his family, which is explained in the manga, but he really didn't care they matter, You're actually trying to make one of the worst human beings in anime look like a good person.

I’ve seen other youtubers doing big projects by cutting them into short videos; with that, you wouldn’t stop uploading for too much time and you could touch a lot more topics, while making the process of doing that long of a script a bit easier and shorter. When you finish uploading the videos, you could either make a playlist or putting them altogether into one long video. This is just a suggestion for projects you think should be longer, but due to how UA-cam works, uploading every few months wouldn’t be beneficial. Light did nothing wrong. Plus, the mangaka never outwardly said it, but he wrote a short side series about a fledgling mangaka writing up a top tier series only for the producers to constantly pressure the artist to continue a series that was already done. Plus, Light winning against L was the best way to end the series. Light won, became God, the end; that's heavily implied to be the original ending as the last arc was rushed and not planned at all.

The way they catch him is still smart and done well and it wraps up the story. After analyzing the characters strengths, flaws, and motivation I thought Light was a good character who would do whatever it takes to better the world. But after rewatching and taking your analysis into consideration, you are right. Light never cared for anyone and was selfish with every decision that he made. I disagree what you said about L not caring about Justice and everything is about just winning the game. I think that role fits better with Near. Ultimately, great video and I hope you’ll make more. I really disagree with the notion that Light never cared about changing the world for the better. Despite your insight, I think you actually interpreted him as more shallow and stagnant of a character that he actually is.
He comments more than once that the one to be Kira would need to sacrifice his own soul. During memory loss he says Kira's previous pattern was exactly how he would judge criminals if he was in his position, despite supposedly thinking that the act is despicable. His whole emotional turmoil after realizing the notebook is real (that the anime toned down a bit by the way) proves that "I was bored too" was more of fucking around with Ryuuk with word games, especially since he literally expected to die in some other wordly way the moment that the actual owner of the notebook arrives. Also him not caring about Sayu during Mello's attack is just straight bullshit and that's confirmed through his internal dialogue. You also state that he acted during his father's death as it was a known fact, which it obviously is not.
There is a plethora of evidence that Light wasn't 100% ego driven and especially not from the start.

    • @jaynedodd5528
      @jaynedodd5528 Рік тому +2

Nah, he didn't care for Sayu. I never read the manga, so maybe it's different there, but in the anime the only reason he doesn't kill her is because no one else besides his task force and Near's know about the kidnapping. He knew it would look suspicious if she died. But he absolutely wanted to kill her just to keep the notebook. He never stopped his father from making the eye-deal with Ryuk, purposefully shortening his own dad's life in half to get the notebook back, and if nothing else is more damning, he tried to kill not just Near and Mello, but everyone on his own task force, including Matsuda who always believed in his innocence and even agreed with Kira not being wholly evil. Light even kills Takada after promising her that she'd be next to him as a goddess of the new world. He kills her off despite her not making any mistakes and killing Mello per his instructions. She's a devout follower, who's shown to have a striking intelligence of her own and the "perfect voice" for Kira. If he trusted Misa enough to not blab, then I don't really see the purpose of him killing Takada. The simple explanation is that he just doesn't care about people. Maybe he does in the beginning. His inner dialogue says that he needs to be careful or his actions could lead to the death of his family. But something obviously shifts in him towards the end of the show. His only ambition is to be a god unchallenged. That much was shown when he tried to kill L with that trick of Lind L. Taylor on the news broadcast. Light is as shallow as they come. He doesn't just kill criminals, or even just those who stand directly in his way. He kills people who anger him, he kills purely to shut anyone up that dares to say he's evil. Ever wonder why America loves the protection of freedom of speech? It's stuff like that. People should be allowed to speak their mind, as long as it isn't straight up harassment or a call to action. Me disagreeing with somebody shouldn't cost me my life. L described him perfectly. Light is childish and impulsive with a god-complex. He was never a good person to begin with.

    • @Reality-Distortion
      @Reality-Distortion Рік тому +9

@@jaynedodd5528 You're wrong on multiple things.
      1. Day prior he does have a scene of staring himself in the mirror, thinking of nothing else than trying to come to terms that he might need to kill Sayu when they reach Mello's gang.
      2. When he thinks of the plan, the hesitation comes first, the rationalization second.
      3. What is even more important about previous point - after the notebook was already taken with the missile and he was talking with Near in chapter 65 on page 13 he says that he COULD actually kill both Soichiro and Sayu to get away with the stopping the kidnapping, as all he needed to do was send a word about the situation to all departments and pin the blame on Kira. Even if the anime doesn't have this internal dialogue (I don't remember) - it doesn't matter. What matters is that it's a good plan and the only obstacle that could get in the way are his emotional attachments.
      4. Speaking of his emotional attachments and chapter 65 - in the same chapter when Light expresses in his internal dialogue concern for his dad's well-being after he calls himself a failure as a police officer and comforted him. This whole narration of Kira being this 100% evil inhumane, emotionless, immoral being is factually incorrect and it's pushed only by one part of the fandom that doesn't like the other can see Light for the 3dimensional multifaceted character he actually is.
      5. Him not stopping Soichiro from the eye deal did basically no damage. Death Note is a deterministic universe. Every death that happens is preordained UNLESS Notebook of Death changes that either by killing that person or Shinigami sacrificing for them which prolongs their life.. Canon prequel novel "Another Note" hammered this point even further. Another important fact to remember is that the eye deal cuts your lifespan exactly by half. Lifespan including death from any nondeathnote cause. With all of this we get a clear picture of Soichiro's fate. He died the same night he made the deal. Therefore, even if he didn't take those eyes - he would've died the day after and that's absolute.
      6. You seem to forget what circumstances Takada was in. For one, the ownership thing. Two, she was in extremely bad situation that was too dangerous for him for task force to find her and question, since their connection was problematic from the start. Making analogy to Misa's case is stupid (no offense but c'mon this is simple) since she already left clues that led to her before talking it over with Light and he couldn't kill her due to fear of Rem.
      7. I meant shallow in terms of character writing depth, not values he holds...
And even if I did - the author himself in How To Read Guide states verbatim that boredom was not the only reason he started his crusade. It's not like he doesn't actually believe what he says about morality just to keep a facade.
      8. Uh, no? He killed Lind L Taylor because he actively announced he's going to be a threat to him, not because he disagreed lmao. There were tons of people in the world that disagreed with it and he never tried to shut them for that. During his amnesia period, he even describes "original Kira's" judgement process, revealing how many people, including murderers, he lets go. Your attempt to demonize every single aspect, to the point of no aligning with story events, motivations expressed on numerous occasions and common sense (it's obvious people would bow themselves over time, killing them for opposing his opinion isn't even any practical or smart) is just indicative of your hard bias.

    You MUST watch Monster (anime).
It's the best philosophical and psychological anime with best character developments and arcs.
But before that, here are some things I have to ask:
    1. 14:40, Do you also agree with Near, that Light Yagami was JUST a murderer? And why?
    2. If Ryuk wouldn't have written Light Yagami's name in Death Note, he would have died anyway because of Matsuda's gunshot wounds, so would that have made Matsuda a punishable MURDERER if it doesn't that whom Matsuda has killed was a big criminal, after all?
    3. In the entire scene of Mr. Yagami's last moments in hospital, was Light Yagami ACTING for EVERY second?
    4. When did Kira actually born inside of Light Yagami?
    (i) When he touched it for the first time.
(ii) When picked it again and carried it to his home with the hope of it being real?
(ii) When, after killing the second criminal, he started thinking in rain that he could change the world by killing big criminals and could become the God of the New World.
(iii) When he was challenged and called evil for the first time by L.
    (iv) Other. (Mention it)
I love and support Light Yagami, not Kira (as they both are two different personalities).
But also I support the idea of killing big and worst criminals (for Justice and the greater good), not the killing of innocent people to win a challenge.
I believe there's a Light Yagami and Kira in every human and we can't be only Light Yagami or Kira. There's are some parts of both in every person but the person and society around him/her decide that he/she will have the more parts of whom.
Truly, 'Light Yagami + Kira' is, if not the most, the one of most complex anime characters.

Perhaps?) and that makes me think just there is a lot more going on in that little book.
Because of Jump Ultimate Stars on the DS, I always thought of the Death Note series as a world that would be stagnant forever until Light gets the Death Note. If he didn't, just moved on in his life the world would be forever dull and "restart." Light is like the big bang of that world. It needs him to get that book.
I also feel the whole dropping the Death Note in Earth is just another way of saying "we need more Shinigami" then someone has to go through the trials on Earth to become one.

What I love about the show is Light’s eyes. So much symbolism. In the beginning his eyes are round and innocent. But the more evil he does as Kira the more they become sharper and emotionless. Their personality split, sharp eyes is Kira, round innocent eyes are Light. More proof of this is his dad’s death. When he’s trying to get his dad to kill Mello he’s still got sharp eyes. But when his dad passes he drops the pen no longer Kira and his are a mix of sharp and round the two sides battling for control as he cries for his dad.

I see a lot of videos and comments that are either “Kira was right” or “Kira’s a psycho killer” and I feel both perspectives entirely missed the point. This is the first video I’ve seen to get the message and story of Light correctly.

I watch this anime with my dad who is 73 72 and he said at first he liked the light but as the show went on and he was willing to kill his whole family even his sister even policemen FBI everyone that even got in his way my dad started to say he was nothing more than the criminals he was putting away he was nothing more than a killer which surprise my dad when near said the exact same thing I was in the team light as well but when he started killing innocent people people that did nothing more than do their job then that was when he lost my support yes I don't like policeman don't trust them but that doesn't mean a entire squad needs to die because they're getting in the way of someone's ego trip it's sad that light basically was willing to use the girl any man would have died for and no offense if a girl is willing to go to jail be killed or tell you to kill her to protect her sorry you that is the kind of girl you f****** make your second in command not some little girl that you're using and let me clarify about innocent light started out killing murders rapists bad people but to the point where people weren't even wanting to shoplift let alone a speeding ticket yeah that's kind of a crazy

On the subject of the second half, I kinda wish instead of Near appearing or L just dying at the end, we should have L fake his death and when Light thinks he's won he comes back and catches him. With this we can still have that amazing episode where Light breaks down, laughing like a maniac, screaming and whining like a toddler, then reflecting on how he got the Death Note. That last episode might be my favorite, but replacing Near with L would have seemed much better

  • @HighRoller713
    @HighRoller713 8 місяців тому +1

I think Deathnote should’ve ended after L died. Saying it’s incomplete because Light is “destined” for tragedy or that evil just simply can’t win is a very linear way of thinking.

The deathnote story is absolutely perfect. I guess people say that it was misfortune for light to pick up that deadly notebook since he had immense amount of potential and intellect but, if you think carefully it was necessary for light to pick up that notebook. Only someone with that amount of ego could carry out this notebook holding the world as hostage and that ego settled in light due to his success in his past. With that kind of potential and intellect it's very easy to deduce that his past was very bright. Before the deathnote was introduced light was portrayed as a genius student who looked out of the window during class portraying that he knew more than the teacher. And we also get evidence that he was O2 and O3 tennis champion plus he scored perfect in all of his exams. Basically he was a super genius kid with a perfect life which led that kind of ego settle in him. He thought that he was the only one who could achieve the superior position of the all which is of the god and due to that he got lured by that power. If a guy named x got the notebook who wasn't as smart as light yagami and he didn't scored perfect in his exams nor he was good at sports chances are that after the 1st use of the notebook he wouldn't have used it anymore because he might have felt that he was no one to decide who is allowed to live in this world and who is not since everyone was better than him. He would have got scared and probably would have thrown the notebook away but light continued to use it due to his ego which came from his past perfect life. So I guess it's not the deathnote's fault that light died but it's his parents fault cause if they would have taught light to keep his ego in check light wouldn't have used the notebook after the first use which was led by curiosity and not by evil intensions

And i also think that the people who think that how light , l , near , and mello are so smart I guess it's because there is one common trait in them which is lack of empathy. Now about that 8 episode track where light was shown as a normal human i would say that he still considered himself superior not by evil intensions ofc and so did l. L was also ready to test out the notebook on certain criminals who were scheduled for death like Lind l tailor but then again who gives him the right to dispose a criminal in front of Kira like that where he intentionally knew and wanted Kira to kill him to deduce certain traits about kira. I know that helped a lot in the investigation and it was for the greater good but so does light does. Light also considers that wht he is doin is for the greater good. They both got away with this excuse for a long time. They both proclaimed to be the pillars of justice but they were not. Both of them had their intentions l wanted to prove that he is a super genius by catching kira a supernatural mass murderer where light wanted to show the world that what is his power and what happens when you try to cross him in the name of kira. In the end both of them are same and so their psychology and that's why both of them can relate with each other so well. If you look at the first episode light was bored in his life since everything was easy for him and he didn't face any challenge since he was damn smart same goes for l. L was a nameless orphan who was raised in the wammy's house in Winchester England. He was also bored by his life since he was also damn smart and solving murder mysteries was nothing more than a puzzle for him due to his intellect. But when they both faced each other in real life they for the first time in their life felt that equal and opposite challenge. As if they were made for each other. I am not gonna go on a debate that who was smarter since I consider them both equally smart. I believe that the deathnote was only a medium to connect those two unmatched geniuses together with a bond of friend s cum enemies and this is the bond which the deathnote anime lays emphasis on. It was nothing about justice. Justice was only on the surface but this bond was truly the inner meaning of the anime which the authors wanted to show us. And the people who think that deathnote should have ended right after ls death i can relate with them since near wasn't that sort of a competition for light as l was. But the authors needed to continue it since that had to show that light and l were equal be it in terms of intelligence psychology or anything. If they would have ended the story there that would have meant that light won which they didn't wanted. They made l die to make light weeker like mentioned in this video. There is also a theory that l died on purpose to boost light's ego so that he gets caught. Now by this people may think that he is a martyr since l wanted or rather the authors wanted to potray it that way but the truth is l wanted to show that he was martyr who made this genius idea but l s real intention was to make light caught to prove that he was smarter and that's why he killed himself. You can view it as sacrificing the queen to checkmate the king in chess and that resulted both of them equal
