News flash: B.B. King's 1970 version of "The Thrill is Gone" was a cover of Roy Hawkins' 1951 song of the same name written by Hawkins and Rick Darnell. They probably lifted most of it from a 1931 song by Broadway songwriters Lew Brown and Ray Henderson. There are many old blues songs out there with countless versions and variations that have their roots in the time before audio recording was invented and copyright of old folk songs was rarely a thought of the musicians who performed them live.
What does this sound like the Thrill is gone? Why is his guitar’s name Lucy like Lucille? Why are there 3 kings? Albert is one of the Kings but he was afraid of BB. Velvet Bulldozer Albert and the butterfly vibrato BB. Wish Albert would have given BB a chance to solo when he invited BB to the stage. But Albert didn’t let him solo when BB asked for a round and Albert gathered his guns and played on top. Humble gracious BB chilled because it wasn’t his gig anyways. Oh well. Love em both. And Freddy too.
Big piece ! Thanks a lot for sharing, alejandro ! I didn't know this song and it evokes me "The Thrill Is Gone" of B.B. King. (maybe it's a kind of tribute to the B.B. standard) studio version ( maybe the first soul/blues track with strings arrangement in december 1969 ) : ua-cam.com/video/zEmi8dkD1BQ/v-deo.html mythic live version in Cook County Jail (recorded in september 1970) : ua-cam.com/video/dpuqM035Abw/v-deo.html
The feeling is gone, there's the keys to your door The feeling is gone away, there's the key to your door Oh, I've got to leave you woman I can't take no more The feeling is gone, I won't be a fool again The feeling is gone away, I won't be a full again Oh, I'm tired of you dogging me arround And listening to all your friends Have you heard that old saying: 'Every dawn has its day'? And one day you'll realize You threw a good love away The feeling is gone, you can wave my love goodbye The feeling is gone away, you can wave my love goodbye Oh, there's no explanation darling You know the reason why The feeling is gone I said the feeling is gone away (x2) Someday you'll realize, babe... You threw a good love away
@BigTimeBluesFan989 I'd say nigh on identical - 'The feeling's gone, the feeling's gone away. Oh the feeling's gone, the feeling's gone away.' Replace 'feeling' with 'thrill is', and you've got Thrill is Gone. I'd love to know which came first.
if you guys think there's a lot of similiarities in some songs here , go listen to louise mandrell and her song "TOO HOT TO SLEEP" and then go listen to the eagles "WITCHY WOMAN" & then come back here and let me here you all say something like "WOW MAN !!!!
Peter,I saw Albert in the mid 80's.He had a V,the Acoustic amp and a Small Stone phase shifter set as slow as it would go.One of 2 of the best concerts of my life. The other was the Allman Brothers with Duane and Berry October 15 1971.
i wonder if albert ever even tried flipping the strings, im sure if he lived longer he may have started practing with strings flipped so he has more options, but i assume he would keep his signature sound too. idk, they say jimi could play a lil every which way, left handed right handed, flipped or not

Sounds like he's using a slight phasing effect
+Peter Lundgren It's an MXR Phase 90 that Albert started using around 1976 for studio productions
PHASER AND THE ROLAND CHORUS AMP MAYBE?
Peter,I saw Albert in the mid 80's.He had a V,the Acoustic amp and a Small Stone phase shifter set as slow as it would go.One of 2 of the best concerts of my life. The other was the Allman Brothers with Duane and Berry October 15 1971.
clap clap clap, BRAVO
yes the slight phasing makes the bend notes squeal more when the phase times right
Dj brown liquor!
It's hard to have an original thought I think but he had his signature of phrasing for sure and it's so tasty man.
Why can’t I find it on Spotify
April Manson this was released on a different record label than the rest of his discography

Muddy Waters, check him out, do yourself the favor :).
Yeah I agree. I am familiar with all 3 kings, and they're all great -Freddie sits on the throne imo

But yeah, Albert totally ripped off the strings from B.B.'s version.
it really rocks! thanks Michael Clark for the precious info!
i wonder if albert ever even tried flipping the strings, im sure if he lived longer he may have started practing with strings flipped so he has more options, but i assume he would keep his signature sound too. idk, they say jimi could play a lil every which way, left handed right handed, flipped or not
