I sail a Bavaria 46, basically a smaller sister to Thomases boat, just slightly newer and smaller. I always found it fascinating how people keep shitting on my twin rudders, and I'm the only one who doesn't see the "drawbacks" people keep telling me about. I totaly relate to what Thomas said about him prefering 20-25 knots of wind. My boat comes alive at about 18 knots and at 25 I can sail at an apparent upwind angle of 33 at a speed of 11 knots. The boat feels like it's on tracks. Literally like a freight train. I've literally been in a knockdown once at about 70 degrees of heel and I still had some controll with the twin rudders. Having sailed that boat since 2017, I wouldn't touch another single rudder boat (and believe me, I've sailed plenty of single rudder boats as well)

Also the weather can be very unpredictable……don’t always believe your PredictWind app and be prepared. We have a Moody 54DS which has a single rudder. It is a problem dropping it to service the bearings as we need to get her lifted high to get it out.
Saying the newer wide boats can't go upwind is insanity, Yachting World has shown them absolutely cruising upwind at angles the old boats can't even come close to and really good speeds too. People seem to be hating on Hallberg-Rassy because they sort set the new standard in cruise sailing, huge roomy boats, self furling masts, and a lot of automated sailing making a big boat easier for a small crew. Maybe the feel of steering is different on single vs dual rudder, but that seems like preference and not a fact based performance analyzation. Well done. I agree with your comments on twin rudders, I would happily have them on my next cruising boat. Another positive; you do not need to dig a hole or Jack the yacht up to drop them out and they are way lighter. A further negative; more care is needed when Med mooring, as they are more prone to fouling other vessels anchors or marina lazy lines. Disagree with your comments on not wanting to reef at 25knots, guarantee’s you have a light to moderate weather pig. Get your shit together, buy an easily driven boat with a big rig and learn how to reef without drama. I have been watching Thomas for a year or so, I really appreciate his un-glossed fault finding
" reef at 25knots, guarantee’s you have a light to moderate weather pig." Not sure about that. A moderately high SA/Disp and low Disp/Length with a jib and fractional rig, can flatten the main and jib and generally not reef in 25 knts. But takes skill at the helm and main trim. But for "no drama" on an easily driven boat, yeah go ahead and reef.
My background is in building and engineering. I find that with rudders, a rudder with a rudder post that isn't long enough to also attach to the deck structure (where a tiller could be attached if needed) for added strength is the weak point. I'm a proponent of strength when one is going to isolated locations. If one sails long enough, a grounding and possibly an ocean strike (container, whale or other debris) are concerns, although still small if one takes care. I, personally don't like fin keels on long distance cruising boats (I see them as a possible week point) but there are thousands of those sailing all over the world and are the preferred style for ocean racers, long distance and coastal. It all comes to down to personal preference but I recommend that if you are new to sailing, charter different types over some time and develop a list from those experiences. For full discloser, my last sailboat had twin keels and a spade rudder and I didn't have any real problems other than the usual. Personally, I would have really liked a large swim platform like Thomas has as most of your time is at anchor and access is really important.
I sail San Fransisco where winds are usually high and gusty. I love the twin rudders over single in gusts because it doesnt tend to round up in the gusts. In the marina it’s not as maneuverable in forward but at least as good in reverse. This is easy to overcome with a bit of practice. Ive watched these other UA-camrs bag on twins but my experience tells me twins are better in most situations
Try The Sailing Brothers. Two guys who worked in a supermarket in the UK; saved up, bought a boat, sailed around the UK, then off on adventures. They’re currently in Australia…..it’s about the sailing …..and cheese!😂
Oh the world we live in!! Its hilarious!! Commonsense tells us twin rudders could not possibly be cheaper, commonsense also tells us they come with redundancy and so forth...... Great video, this needs to be done as it seems very few people have commonsense nowadays.........Sailing with Thomas is actually a fantastic channel, a real experienced proper sailor!!
The comments about reefing were not correct. Often, in a modern sailing configuration that is dezigned for a wide wind range, you need to reef early. In 25 knots of true wind, all racing cruisers have reefed sails and flattened mains if you are not going down wind. Apparent wind going upwind is over 30 knots, and it is too much for a sail plan that is designed to be used in light winds. Thomas has a nice boat, but Bavarias a re known for their lack of performance in light winds - because of the reduced sail area.
Ha! I saw Thomas' video this morning and thought of you. Just say no to crappy old boats! It's incredible how many times I have taught people to sail and they tell me that they are going sail away around the world. My common comeback is, "Why don't you crew with someone on their boat and get some experience out at sea to see if you like it before dumping money and time into an old boat?" Nope, they run out and buy a boat that "just needs some love," work on it for 5 years, sail it down to Mexico or to Hawaii and then give up. What happened? Oh yeah, you have to sail upwind back to California and a lot of things break.
Question twin rudder does that really make your boat safe or better than a SKag rudder? Also what about the balance of the sailing boat? I notice the tall masts to size of boat that can make the boat faster but healing over in strong winds is more dangerous with main sale. but with medium type of mast is less likely to take the boat to dangerous levels but compromises in speed. But there are other ways suck as different types of kites or spinnakers that a small boat can take advantage of. Now my problem is sailing boats that have rudders are being attacked two rudders is two places of water getting in to your boat. Where as Skeg or single rudder is only one way of water getting in to your boat. My problem is why rudders fail like that? Why can't rudders if the seals or other fail they can't self seal that area? I am sure there is a why to self seal so the boats do not take on water and sink.
Thanks for highlighting some of this misinformation and exaggeration. I took one channel to task about UA-cam Storms, 20 to 30 kn, I seemed to upset some people, and got unsubscribed by some mutual followers. His content was interesting enough without the exaggeration. It's like the word 'abandoned' is used in house videos to draw viewers.
Current sailboat are basically sharpies hulls and also wide catboats hulls, and fixed appendages are the real problems check Rodger Martin's Presto 30 sharpie after designing competition long fixed keel yachts for years. Thats a real cruising boat
I was under the impression that when a boat is heeled over, the twin rudder design gets one rudder on the centerline of the ummm wetted surface. A rudder mounted in the cl of the boat will be to one side when the boat is heeled. The 2 rudder has one out of the water with the other (smaller than a single design) using less drag. You should have a better balance. I dont know I'm talking about only what I believe. Also, people who spend unlimited budgets on racing boats all use dual rudder (i think) I'd never considered that the single rudder was more vulnerable but that's a good point as well.🎉
Although I agree with most both Thomas and Chris say you really need to look at each boat design - my single skeg rudder turns on a dime in any condition - designed as a racer/cruiser and although over 40 years old has a modern interior - yes I prefer modern clean simple interiors - when these boats were designed they factored in all aspects of conditions but obviously new tech/knowledge comes along so as Chris says - get teh boat that world for you.
You have a twin when it comes to sailing knowledge! I've subscribed to Thomas' channel and will check out his vids... Nice to be validated once in a while... Makes up for all the haters out there! Keep on keeping on! We appreciate it! 👍😎👍
Thank u. Grt vid. Actually came across Roberts channel yesterday and saved his latest vid for tonight. Looking forward to it even more. Thanks for the no BS vids🤙
They said stanchions were unnecessary (changed their minds later). They said small holding tanks were acceptable because you can just dump your waste into anchorages. They've said other ridiculous things and I stopped watching. I see they've continued to spread misinformation over the years😮
About bolt on keels their advantage is if damaged they can be replaced. Problem the bolts prone to rust just like rudder posts they all are prone to rust or corrosion including bearings. We have seen many bolt on Keels fall off that is a fact. But solid keels they have other issues like bigger do get water logged if damaged and larger hole leak for the boat if ripped off. Also a lot of work and money plus the balance weight or ballast also a problem when grounding.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with hard work! Life is not easy! Work can be hard! If they want to work their asses off refitting a sailboat and make a bunch of money on UA-cam then that’s their problem! One of the biggest problems on this planet is work ethic and laziness! I like hard work and I like to watch channels with those similar personalities! But that’s my opinion and I still love your channel!
I would have enjoyed being there when the Kraken guy say that timeline of Thomases where he has the little tag that says, "Kraken yachts are here" It's a great graphic.
I always rationalise this like cars. Is a car from the 70's better than now? Objectively not a chance in hell. Yes, you may have collectors items but no way would I give up a modern car to live with a 70's Ford.
Just subscribed to youtube channel @SailingwithThomas. Thank you for your straight forward, experienced and "unfiltered" advice on sailboats and cruising. This episode was truly enlightening as it seems to call out some of the bs of various "influencers" who unfortunately give out skeptical information, however well meaning, to those of us who are relatively inexperienced cruisers. BTW, I own a Catalina 36 mkii and I know how much you love Catalinas 🤑...NOT!!! Still, I love your candor and when it comes time to sell and move to a somewhat larger 40-44 for FL & Bahamas island hopping in a year or two, I'll be interested in your consulting package. Thanks and keep up the great vids (although maybe take it a little easier on my C-36 or I won't be able to sell her...🤪!).
Many if not all quick built modern boats have twin helm but they have issues auto pilot not all have a manual rudder control if both helms stop working. As both can turn the rudders against each other as modern version work on electric than cable or work by hydraulics so not all twin helms work the same way on boats. This is what people need also to look in to as some boats are built with a tiller connection in emergency but it is not all of them. Which is the same with single rudder too but there are ways You can do that if have boating knowledge or the correct tools for your boats. Always safety first anyway not matter what boat you have.
I have zero knowledge and never sailed that much, so please don't get offended with my question. Would it be possible to island hop all around the world by crossing the Bearing strait, going all the way around by coast till Ireland and, from there, do a single open water crossing from Ireland to St Pierre and Miquelon?
@@ChasingLatitudes Not that you need it, but you were justified. It's the same in any endeavor.... someone's opinion with experience outweighs those without. That's not rocket surgery.
You do have to remember that if you are in the bumping into hard stuff around the world school of UA-cam sailing like “Breaking Reefs” it’s best to have an encapsulated keel, a heavy solid glass hull and a bunch of airbags. 🤣 that boat sure handled a beating. Not so good for the reef.
The most dangerous part of sailing is listening to forum (armchair sailors), and most youtube channels for your information. Way more dangerous than freighter's or possibly losing a keel 😂
If people showed what cruising was really like on UA-cam no one would ever do it. UA-camrs with bad facts and opinions are the most important part of the cruising community. Without them, we’d have far fewer boats for sale, far fewer people getting into and then out of the lifestyle, and not as much opportunity for those who cruise for a living. Sailing is supposed to suck, you’re supposed to do it wrong, and listening to actual experts just reduces the misery occasionally, which defeats the entire point of owning a sailboat.
Oooh cover Sailing Thomas's boat. Thomas is thee sailor, he took a surprise Cyclone and 60+ knots, I was like no way I would have gotten through that alive. I tuned out on Lady K on that video about the beamer boats. Missed Dan's comment when I watched that video. Never watched Sailing Millenium Falcons, but I would have called BS as Hallberg-Rassy are traditionalist that build solid boats as their resale prices can attest to.
the only disadvantage of twin rudders is you don't get the prop wash over the rudder unless of course you are twin screws too. But most modern boats come with both a bow and stern thruster which takes care of that problem. Plus not many boat owners understand their boat and what prop walk is when they are going astern. Back when I had my boat I use to help others dock mainly because I did not want my boat hit. Trying to go astern with prop walk, wind, and a running tide will kick your ass if you don't know what you are doing. But that describes most of the weekend warriors who have more money than sense and buy a boat bigger than their skills can handle. You need to pass a drivers test to operate an automobile. There should be a mandatory test before you skipper a boat greater than 30 feet. It does not cost a whole lot of money to go get the training you need to get your Sixpack.
@@paulthew2 I hear ya it is kinda nice to be able to do that in our country. Maybe it's just my area but we have a lot of idiots who have no business driving a 30+ foot boat.
If you understood, what you say, you would recognize that prop thrust is a minor factor in maneuvering, forward, or reverse, easily identified, and managed. It is rarely a factor. If one is capable of handling a small boat, big ones are not a problem. I suggest that you read more books, spend more time on the water/
@@captainjimolchs Well you just demonstrated your ignorance and you probably should follow your own advice. I have circumnavigated the globe and several thousand miles under the keel. How about you? And yes a single rudder with a prop in front makes a huge difference in close maneuvering.
Love the info I get from your channel. We have a boat on Kentucky River or…The Loop. We hare b Definitely taking out 2000 Catalina MK 2 to the keys next season
Lithium and sailing is potential disaster, an explosion or rapid fire at sea leaves you nowhere to go. I would prefer not to board such a boat. and would urge great caution. The problem is in large numbers of cell as in EV cars. In series and parallel to provide a more useful store of voltage and capacity cells must be matched with care. to maintain potential. What can happen when one cell loses it potential, is discharged if instead of being recharged a load is applied the flattened cell can have its polarity reversed damaging it, recharging corrects this doing further damage. Now we have a potential for catastrophe. This is why not discharging below 20% or charging above 80% is not recommended, Just another mile to home might be responsible for for trouble. A phone or tablet is not subject to heavy loads but a boat or vehicle is. Take care and I hope the prospect for cell damage is better understood.
@arslin yes I am not a fan of most of the Bavaria line up but that's due to my size, the c series i find laid out horribly for me, the 30 footers I'm to tall to be able to walk around the salon table because it literally hits me in the knees
He's sailing a Bavaria 55. Isn't that the one that has multiple demastings? Sailing Zingaro has episodes on this. Look up Sailing Zingaro Pacific Rescue
I think for electric boats it’s really important what batteries you go it better u make you’re self with best BMS what can u charge always and have spare BMS ! Batteries newer really go wrong just BMS always make problem ! U need to know how to connect best way solar panels for best results make better what voltage go to all others things ! Many ppl make bad systems and that’s way fell! And I’m think the best think nobody controls you u self-sufficient u no need nobody that’s the best part for cars to the diesel price go up electricity price go up but if u have solar panels nobody can control you !

I saw hiss video earlier today. Priceless how he mirrored your past comments on some these chaannels
Right , ive said all this for years and finally someone else had the stones to say it as well
I sail San Fransisco where winds are usually high and gusty.
Did it. Went to his channel. He is legend, thanks for letting us know
Try The Sailing Brothers. Two guys who worked in a supermarket in the UK; saved up, bought a boat, sailed around the UK, then off on adventures. They’re currently in Australia…..it’s about the sailing …..and cheese!😂
I did a video on them last week
Yes Sailing with Thomas is my favourite channel pure knowlage and honest opinions only.regards from Poland for bouth of you boys
Thomas is one of my favorite sailors. When he discusses tech and engineering I always perk up. He has great visuals and explanations.
Yeah that guy is awesome.
100% ha that's funny
Sailing Thomas is my second favorite sailing UA-cam related vlogger. Once again well done Chris .
Glad you enjoyed it!
Experienced sailor with a dry sense of humour? Subscribed ❤
That's the one!
Another great enlightening video, well done Chris!
Thank you thank you
Thanks for highlighting some of this misinformation and exaggeration. I took one channel to task about UA-cam Storms, 20 to 30 kn, I seemed to upset some people, and got unsubscribed by some mutual followers. His content was interesting enough without the exaggeration. It's like the word 'abandoned' is used in house videos to draw viewers.
Lol
" off like a herd of turtles " is a brilliant saying " So is " flat out like a lizard drinking " a reference to running at speed
👍😎👍
Thanks man, it's great to have someone else who's on the same page
Thank u. Grt vid. Actually came across Roberts channel yesterday and saved his latest vid for tonight. Looking forward to it even more. Thanks for the no BS vids🤙
Yeah that guy is awesome, I recommend you subscribe!
I am totally charmed and impressed by your honest, call it as you see it way. Very entertaining channel! Thanks for sharing:)
Glad you like it!
Sailing Uma has regularly put out misinformation for years. They are annoying and arrogant. They always act like they're so wise 😂😂😂
They said stanchions were unnecessary (changed their minds later). They said small holding tanks were acceptable because you can just dump your waste into anchorages. They've said other ridiculous things and I stopped watching. I see they've continued to spread misinformation over the years😮
Yeah, they really shouda bought that couch.
Would have saved the world a lot of verbal shiite and arrogance.
@@whyme8068 The episodes where they try to teach you something are the worst. I don't know where they get half the garbage they spew.
Haha
That was a great video. I really appreciate your honesty.
Chris found his spirit animal. 😂
Finally
Love it, thx.
Appreciate the humble honesty of showing yourself being flagged. I always appreciate you, and now, tenfold more.
Glad you liked it!
Pretty sure lady K sailing content is looking more and more like yours!
Love your work..
You're right! I agree!
That was quite the event. They just keep getting better and better!
Thank you thank you
I would have enjoyed being there when the Kraken guy say that timeline of Thomases where he has the little tag that says, "Kraken yachts are here"
It's a great graphic.
Thomas is the best. Great sailor. Decades of experience.
I always rationalise this like cars. Is a car from the 70's better than now? Objectively not a chance in hell. Yes, you may have collectors items but no way would I give up a modern car to live with a 70's Ford.
I would. I notice no one agrees with you
Just subscribed to youtube channel @SailingwithThomas.
@@chriswhitlock5097 love those catalonas lol, it's all good man I appreciate you being here, the best boat is the one that works for you
I think one point missed about the twin rudder duscussion is that the Vendee Globe yachts don't have twin rudders to save money.
HAHAHAHAH
Vendee Globe is limited to designs from Yesteryear.
You gotta be kidding me????? I just finished watching that.... immediately thought of you.... HOW FRICKEN WEIRD!!!! lol
lol ;) almost liek what ive been saying for years is finally now being told
@@ChasingLatitudes Not that you need it, but you were justified. It's the same in any endeavor.... someone's opinion with experience outweighs those without. That's not rocket surgery.

Great, both of you guys - will be subbing with Thomas - nice to see/hear facts - Kudos - And hilarious too!
Haha glad you found it funny!
I wonder when you would find Sailing with Thomas, yes he roasted them big time, I left a link on UMA, got blocked….
Of course, uma is the absolute worst
You tube sailing? Try you tube pilots who fly over the public more attracted to the camera than piloting the airplane.
Excellent info clarification on the twin helms. Facts vs opinion/misinfo.
Amazing right ;)
Love this! Going to check out Thomas now. Thanks dude.
Loved this one. Chose to check in to yours before watching Thomas’s :)
Thank you thank you
I hate people who are "Full of Sh*t" ..hats off to Thomas & Chris🎩
Thank you thank you
You do have to remember that if you are in the bumping into hard stuff around the world school of UA-cam sailing like “Breaking Reefs” it’s best to have an encapsulated keel, a heavy solid glass hull and a bunch of airbags. 🤣 that boat sure handled a beating. Not so good for the reef.
I know what you mean lol
I think Lady k sailing is geared more towards the seldom used cheap boats . A whole nother audience that needs advice 😎
maybe
Your mic is sounding great
The most dangerous part of sailing is listening to forum (armchair sailors), and most youtube channels for your information. Way more dangerous than freighter's or possibly losing a keel 😂
Agree
Nice one Chris. I especially enjoyed the comment 'embarrassing to watch' , which it was.
Right, i was like wow thomas going hard in the paint there
Thomas’s video was great and to the point.
Yep Thomas is right on to it …. Backs up with my own lessor experience… both you guys must keep it up to relegate the pretenders!
It's always good to have someone else who's on the same page
fyi: HH cats has made a video update on how they plan on fixing The Wynns boat...
@robbylafont i saw it, their president sent me an email

If people showed what cruising was really like on UA-cam no one would ever do it. UA-camrs with bad facts and opinions are the most important part of the cruising community. Without them, we’d have far fewer boats for sale, far fewer people getting into and then out of the lifestyle, and not as much opportunity for those who cruise for a living. Sailing is supposed to suck, you’re supposed to do it wrong, and listening to actual experts just reduces the misery occasionally, which defeats the entire point of owning a sailboat.
SailingwithThomas sent me here, subbed.
It is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself.
the only disadvantage of twin rudders is you don't get the prop wash over the rudder unless of course you are twin screws too.
With a bow thruster, Why do you need one in the stern?
Testing?
No thanks, mate.
I like that you can sail without a licence.
We hare b
Definitely taking out 2000 Catalina MK 2 to the keys next season
Sounds like fun
I hear ya, we gotta be careful out there
Sailing Uma just did a video on spade rudders versus skeg hung and keel hung rudders.
I love what you do ... And I understand why you like his boat. But have you not said in the past that you did not like Bavaria?
@arslin yes I am not a fan of most of the Bavaria line up but that's due to my size, the c series i find laid out horribly for me, the 30 footers I'm to tall to be able to walk around the salon table because it literally hits me in the knees
Great analysis, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
He's sailing a Bavaria 55. Isn't that the one that has multiple demastings? Sailing Zingaro has episodes on this. Look up Sailing Zingaro Pacific Rescue
I never heard of the dude but I watched the video last night. It must be picking up momentum on the algorithm
My shout out boosted the heck out of it
How can twin be cheaper when there is twice the hardware. They lack an understanding of physics
Agree
This will never affect me but still I find it interesting.
Peiple sailed with no motors for centuries. A electric motor doesn't need to run the whole length of an ocean... lol
I saw his video. Excellent. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it
I don't watch Uma anymore. Dan comes across as so smug, I find it off putting.
