I found out this year that hummingbirds LOVE the coleus flowers. So, even though I don’t care for the flowers I let them on the plant for the hummingbirds.
Great video! You inspired me to do something different with coleus. And watching you plant the seeds in the soil made me realize that I can do a much better job than just spreading out 1000 seeds into the wind. Your method is much more controlled and direct. Thank you!
It's so difficult to chose a favorite because they are all beautiful. In the beginning I thought Mighty Mosaic would be it, but seeing them full grown I now chose Chocolate Mint. You are such a good gardener the plants love growing for you!
Grew them first time this year from dollar store seeds. Several varieties seem to appear and have one that is exactly like chocolate mint. Will try propagating for wintering over. They are so rich looking like fabric.
I did a few years ago and found it easy yet rewarding. This year I grew from cuttings and it went well. My favorite is chocolate mint. The color depth is mind-blowing.
I love your garden. My favorite coleus is the Chocolate Mint. I usually watch you on my TV so I can't comment unless I'm on my phone. Thanks for sharing.
Try pinching half of each variety and see how you like the results. If you have a large area that you need to fill in then definitely pinch. Also, if you want to save money then take cutting’s in the fall and root them indoors to plant out next year.
Just found your channel. Earlier today, I planted the 'Black Dragon' and 'Lime Delight' that I bought from Pinetree Seeds last year. I am starting them too late to spend a full summer outside. Even so, it's never too late to learn from the experience. That said, I appreciate you including the dates and timelines for all the steps in the process of growing the seedlings. Your mature plants look wonderful out in your landscape! I look forward to watching and learning more from you. Many Thanks!!!
Roxana, they are all beautiful, but the Mighty Mosaic is probably my favorite one. It has such a wide array of colors in the leaves and would look great with any plant that has solid-colored blooms matching any of those colors paired with it. I've grown coleus from seed in the past but haven't grown them for several years. Hopefully, if the good Lord is willing, I'll get another chance next year to grow some fun things for my garden! Have a wonderful weekend! ~Margie🤗💐🐝🦋
Black dragon with the pink in the middle is my favorite, but that chocolate mint is also great. I feel like I'd have a hard time combining mighty mosaic with other plants in a container, but I'm not that skilled so that may be why. They're all gorgeous!
I feel like mighty mosaic was my “pattern” and I just added solid colors from it around. That’s kinda how I help families work their outfits for family photo shoots, find a pattern for the one family member and chose solids w/ textures for the rest from that patterns.
Oh my! Those coleus are gorgeous! I love them all! Hard to pick a favorite. You and others on YT are tempting me even more starting with seeds. I already have veggie seedlings but haven't gotten into growing flowers and other plants from seeds. I have coleus that comes back every year -- even ones that are in pots and I haven't even overwintered them. I even got a gorgeous coleus that volunteered in one of my hydrangeas planted in a pot. I have no idea where it came from unless a little birdie planted iti there. I did take a cutting of a huge coleus in one planter and simply stuck it in another pot and it's growing. I wish everyth. ing grew as easily!
i didnt start them from seeds.. i bought plant.. but in 3 yrs... i have 10 kinds but i just take cuttings in the fall and use them as house plant.. and do more cuttings in the spring to replant outside... i love them all that is the problem lollll
Hi Roxana, TY so much for showing progression from seed planting in February to full grown plant. Very interesting. I appreciated that. It is so satisfying when we grown our own plants rather than buying from the store. Have a nice weekend.
I like the black dragon color, wish it was mor full like the chocolate mint, I also like the chocolate mint design, but because the chocolate mint is fuller, my favorite for this video is the chocolate mint, I like all three, but for a favorite, I’ll go with the chocolate mint, I appreciate how you showed from start to finish how you grow the plants, very good picture quality, beautiful colors, I’m inspired, I’m gonna try to grow the rainbow variety, tonight, pray for me,
I hear you on the black dragon, it is more like a brown dragon IMO, I am trying another dark color this year to see how they compare, I love chocolate mint but I don't know if I really like the green frame on the leaves... SO many choices with coleus!
I Love all your Coleus! Mighty Coleus, Black Dragon, Chocolate Mint. I would love to have the Black Dragon though! I love the beautiful shape of their leaves! (El fruncido de sus hojas) preciosa!
I grew Versa Lime from seed and will definitely repeat. I also grew Rediculous from cuttings. I overwintered a plant and started new plants from cuttings off that plant. They’ve all done fantastic. As for yours, it’s hard to pick one. They’re all gorgeous. 💚
Chocolate mint is my favourite for sure. At first I thought what a lot of effort for a tropical plant that will die in the winter, but now after seeing them at the end of your video I can see the beauty and why you would grow them year after year. Thanks!
I am loving that Chocolate Mint!!! Thank you for this video, once again you've inspired me, and I plan to grow this beauty for I have several spots it would be stunning in!
I started my Black Dragon from seed and it has performed beautifully. I have been collecting seeds from the flowers that grow out of them. One flower stalk I collected about 30-40 seeds
That is awesome! Just a note, it is a hybrid so you may not get the same plant per se, I am saving seeds of that one too but I have no expectations of getting the exact same plant. Good luck!
I am in Indiana also I did grow it from seed for the first time this year. The package was an assorted variety. I intend to plant them again next year. I like your black dragon the best!
Great video and thank you for sharing, I started my plants in the beginning of May (9th) and they started to poke through the dirt. I’m very excited to see them grow. When should I transfer them to a larger pot? They’re currently about an inch tall and are in trays of 12 with 2 seeds in each section which is approximately 1 1/2” square. Thank you and once again great work and beautiful plants.
Grew coleus from seed last two seasons - just love them! They do great in pots for me. I used the rainbow type mix from Baker Creek and Botanical Interests - but last year I added 3 varieties from Pinetree after seeing your video. Love them all! Will grow from seed again and again 🙂
I can't even pick one, they all are so beautiful. However, I really adore Chocolate Mint vibrant color. The leaves, they are everything! Thank you, for sharing, Roxana.
At the beginning of the year I watched you seedling some of your plants but, I wasn't confident enough to try it. I am for sure trying to do the same this coming spring. By the way great choices. Thank you
I’m going to try the toothpick method I started a bunch of rainbow coleus and just sprinkled those mini seeds and now I have like 100 plants they all germinated and I have to try and separate them and up pot them. I’ll give some away this year. Still waiting for true leaves before up potting but so fun with the colors on them.
I agree that coleus is a must-grow! I’ve tried the super cheap seeds from the Dollar Tree and even saved seeds from those plants from year to year. I’ve also used a basic rainbow mix from Lowe’s. Maybe this year I’ll try out some more unusual varieties. I really like the wild patterns and bright colors as I think they stand out better in my shady gardens. Insects did eat some of the leaves this year, but they still look good. I can’t get over how big and tall mine get! Also, great video format. I’m sure it took a lot of planning and forethought to be able to chronicle the growth of one type of plant over time, but it’s so nice to see the full timeline.
I also got seed from dollar store and first time growing them. They did well and one looks like the chocolate mint. I’m going to take a cutting from each for winter and see how it goes. Not the greatest houseplant keeper😊
Thank you for sharing your lived knowledge....I'm ready to try coleus (have wizard mix seeds in hand). My fave is the Chocolate Mint. Utterly delicious with that fine, delightful mint green edge to each and every leaf.
I bought three small starts what I thought were coordinating colors of coleus this year by taking cuttings I have a dozen pots with the coleus trio. I think they are gorgeous especially with fall coming on. I'll be taking cuttings again to try to keep for houseplants and to have for next year's garden. Best buy ever. Also the cuttings look great in my glass hyacinth bulb containers...no sitting on the shelves for the summer. I'm in central Indy too and love your channel!
I love coleus. I grew a beautiful wine burgundy colored variety last year but didn't pick it up at my garden center this year. Went a bit nuts with roses. Next year I'll definitely get some. I didn't know they could be easily grown from seed. I'll try it this year. I love the chocolate mint variety with the lime green around the edges of the dark purple leaves. Just gorgeous.
Central IL here! I started coleus from seed in spring. I bought a variety pack at Home Depot I think. I don’t have any sort of set up and don’t usually succeed when trying to start things from seed, but these were my one success! I just dumped them into an old six pack annual container and set them on my sunniest window sill, they did great. I probably had three per cell and a just split them up all over the yard and in containers once they put on some size. I can’t believe how well they did! I definitely plan to try again and maybe use your nice toothpick method and put one per cell and use a few 6 pack containers. Great video, thanks! I’m really drawn to that black dragon you grew!
OMG! They were selling single plants 6" in 4" pots for $5.00 per plant in Spring at Walmart! I started 100's of seeds in Spring for less than one plant. They are one of my best (in this heat) this season. Rainbow Mix. I like your Chocolate Mint. I like the contrast. And it's my fav. Ice Cream! LOL Start from seed! Not only will you save money, but you can choose from a great variety.
I love the name of your channel 😎 I also purchased Black Dragon and Chocolate Mint but Chocolate Covered Cherry was my third. They are pricey, $6.75+tx for ten seeds 😐 But so far I have great germination. Hopefully I can split, grow, sell and recover my investment 😏 Thanks for sharing!
I’m not sure how to choose a favorite since they are all so beautiful. It’s between the Chocolate Mint and Mighty Mosaic, I think. I too love coleus and am glad you reminded us how easy they are to start from seed. This year I will do the same.
Stokes have an amazing variety of coleus!! I notice that they have a American side to their business too. I ordered watermelon recently. I think I will go back order some of the sunset (rust coloured) and Scarlett ones. Others like chocolate mint (definitely my favourite of Roxana’s 3) I will grow from cuttings. I wish I was organized enough to place one seed order(or even a few!!) but I get ideas and then pay a fortune in postage!!! Fortunately there are many great Canadian seed suppliers, so I only order the occasional seed from an American supplier with international shipping charges. I just close my eyes when I press Pay 😂😂
@@susans1679 hahahha I hear ya. Thankfully Stokes also has a flat rate shipping, unlike veseys the more you buy the more the shipping is, which is why I wait for free shipping codes when I can. For veggies rainbow seeds I nice and often has free shipping.
I love the Mighty Mosaic. I’m going to have to try that next year! This year I planted two- Wicked Witch which looks a lot like Chocolate Mint, and Main Street Red. I love coleus!
Hi Roxana, I must’ve missed this video when it came out last year but I’m glad I found it now because I want to order the mighty mosaic coleus , I hope I’m not too late ordering now
I started five different kinds from seed last year. Black dragon was one of them but I also grew some lower growing varieties in the fairway series. I loved them all and yes they were very easy. I really enjoyed the set up on this video. Really informative. Thanks.
Thank you for your video. You are very good at showing your love for growing plants and flowers. Can i ask you, you grew these coleus under LED lights? Were they are close to a window? Thank you for your help. I will start them earlier next year. I love coleus because the deer don’t eat them. They are slow starters that what I learned
Thank you for this wonderful video. I appreciate seeing all of the stages of growth! You given me the confidence to start some coleus indoors for my front flower beds. Time to go order seeds!
I love that it isn’t gender specific like most use: “Hey guys” which could be considered offensive to some. And thx for asking my question to ur hubby. 🥰 btw! My friend thanks you too. 😉
i bought some plants at the garden center (zone 5 Nebraska) I took several cuttings and rooted them in water 😁 Don’t buy seeds again. At the end of the season, take a branch and put in water until they root and then plant in soil. Mine are all on my counter. I will move to the basement growing tent for winter and have grow lights on there
Agree with both of you!! Last year I repotted some from outside and kept them over the winter. I also took multiple cuttings and they were so much easier and better than the potted up ones. Took cuttings all through the summer and they were ready to fill in bare spots here and there in the garden within a few weeks. Also grew some from seed - they were very easy. I did order a packet of seeds for next year to get a variety I wanted but for me, cuttings are the way to go.
I found out this year that hummingbirds LOVE the coleus flowers. So, even though I don’t care for the flowers I let them on the plant for the hummingbirds.
Gotcha! Thank you for the tip.
Your chocolate mint is beautiful! I’m inspired to try planting it.
You should! They are amazing!

Love coleus - thanks for showing me how to grow them from seed!
I started rainbow mix from seed this year, planted them under my oak tree and then started 50 more. I am hoping I can over winter them in my zone.
Beautiful editing, wow!! You captured the colors and details, nice job!!!
Thank you so much!

They are all beautiful, but if I had to choose it would be Black dragon! I love the ruffle edge it looked like it had. Have a beautiful day!
They are beautiful especially the different colours 🌸💕🌸
Chocolate mint looks good, but right now I'm about to buy Black Dragon, added to the kart, so I'm checking if its a good variety.

That is quite a problem, the cuttings I saved last year did OK for the winter indoors, I think as far as coleus go I will start them from seed.
I take cuttings from mine also! This winter I did start some from seed and they did really well.
I have been overwintering and starting new cuttings for three years now.

Gorgeous!!! I love all of them!
I started five different kinds from seed last year. Black dragon was one of them but I also grew some lower growing varieties in the fairway series. I loved them all and yes they were very easy. I really enjoyed the set up on this video. Really informative. Thanks.
Thank you Cathy!
I started under LED lights, I have a couple of shelving unit setup in a corner of my house.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I appreciate seeing all of the stages of growth! You given me the confidence to start some coleus indoors for my front flower beds. Time to go order seeds!
You can do it Amy!
I love the chocolate mint😍❤️ new subscriber here.
Welcome!!
Loving the “Hi Gorgeous” ❤️ intro.
I say this to friends and my kiddos all the time, I don't know why I haven't though of using it here.
I love that it isn’t gender specific like most use: “Hey guys” which could be considered offensive to some. And thx for asking my question to ur hubby. 🥰 btw! My friend thanks you too. 😉
My favorite was chocolate mint but they all look great
Chocolate Mint !😍
i bought some plants at the garden center (zone 5 Nebraska) I took several cuttings and rooted them in water 😁 Don’t buy seeds again. At the end of the season, take a branch and put in water until they root and then plant in soil. Mine are all on my counter. I will move to the basement growing tent for winter and have grow lights on there
That's one way to do it :) :)
PS - great video, as always. 😄
Favorite would be chocolate mint. 🥰
Loved them all. ❤
Mighty Mosaic is one of my favorites. I found them at my neighborhood nursery two years ago. Have not seen them since. I’ll check into the seeds.
Super easy to grow from seed too!
chocolate mint is my favorite, however black dragon is a close second.
They are both amazing!
I love the chocolate mint ❤
Chocolate Mint…..but I never saw the Mighty Mosaic……I might try to do this with seeds:)
