May 5th, 2007. De La Hoya vs. Mayweather: The World Awaits was a superfight between “The Golden Boy” and “Money Man”. Going into the fight, Floyd Mayweather was recognized as the No. 1 P4P fighter by The Ring while The Golden Boy held the WBC Light Middleweight crown, where he makes his 1st defense with this fight.
In June 2004, Oscar De La Hoya moves up to the Middleweight division to take on Felix Sturm. Oscar made history by becoming the 1st fighter to win world titles in 6 different weight divisions; bagging the WBO Middleweight strap from Felix Sturm via a controversial UD.
In September 2004, De La Hoya takes on the legendary Bernard Hopkins. Despite being the smaller fighter, De La Hoya was able to engaged in a tactical bout against the bigger Hopkins for the first 8 rounds with Hopkins edging him slightly. But in the 9th round, De La Hoya suffered his 1st KO loss, via left hooks to the body; succumbing to Hopkins' natural size advantage.
In May 2006, De La Hoya takes on “El Matador” Ricardo Mayorga as Mayorga looks to keep his WBC Super Welterweight title.
Mayorga infamously hurled a tirade of insults on Oscar’s sexuality, family and accusing him of throwing the fight against Hopkins. De La Hoya exacts a sweet revenge as he dominated Mayorga in a one sided bout en route to a stoppage.
Highlights of De La Hoya-Mayorga;
• Oscar De La Hoya vs Ri...
With this victory, De La Hoya won his 10th world title in 6 different weight divisions.
In December 2002, Floyd Mayweather Jr. takes on Jose Luis Castillo in a rematch after the controversial outcome of their 1st fight. Refusing to engage, the Money Man utilized jabs and sharp counter right hands to keep Castillo at bay, avoiding any chance of a slugfest. Mayweather won a close but clear UD, keeping his WBC and The Ring Lightweight straps.
In the year 2003, he successfully defended his WBC Lightweight against Victoriano Sosa and Phillip Ndou. Mayweather would move up to 140 pounds in 2004, beating DeMarcus Corley and Henry Bruseles via UD and TKO respectively.
His victories earn him a title shot against Arturo Gatti, who is set to make the 3rd defense of his WBC Super Lightweight title.
In June 2005, Mayweather takes on Gatti in what is considered to be one of the “worst PPV mismatches” in history. In the 1st round, Gatti was floored when he dropped his hands while complaining to the referee about Mayweather’s illegal punches as Floyd seized the opportunity to land a hard left hook. While Gatti beats the count, Mayweather continues to punish him for 6 one sided rounds before Buddy McGirt jumps in to save Gatti from further punishment.
In November 2005, Floyd knocks out Sharmba Mitchell in his 1st fight at 147 pounds. In his next bout, he would take on Zab Judah with the vacant IBO Welterweight title on the line. Judah’s IBF World Welterweight strap was also for the taking.
Judah was able to trouble Floyd early, and landed a right hand shot that had Floyd imbalance and touching his glove on the canvas. However, it was ruled a no-knockdown by Richard Steele. However, by the mid rounds Floyd took control as Judah tires.
Controversy erupts in the 10th round after an illegal blow by Judah, and members of both camps started to swamp the ring. After order was restored, the fight resumes with Floyd cruising the last 2 rounds to a UD victory.
In November 2006, Money Mayweather takes on Carlos Baldomir to defend his newly won IBO World Welterweight title for the 1st time. Baldomir’s WBA, WBC and The Ring Welterweight straps are also on the line. The quicker, more skillful Mayweather dominated Baldomir to a lopsided decision victory.
Money Mayweather and The Golden Boy are set to clash. Going into the fight, Floyd was a 2-1 betting favorite and De La Hoya who’s considered to be somewhat passed his prime have been inactive for a year.
The fight was a close one, with De La Hoya pushing the action all the way by applying tremendous pressure while the younger, quicker Floyd was able to counter with his trademark right hand shots in many occasions.
What do you think of the decision of this fight? Let me know in the comments!

@@ROrneli De La Hoya landed 82 of 341 power punches (24 percent), and Mayweather landed 138 of 241 (57 percent). De La Hoya connected on 122 of 587 total punches (21 percent), and Mayweather connected on 207 of 481 (43 percent). De La Hoya was the busier fighter, but Floyd's patience and crazy accuracy that he's known for won him the fight. Stats don't lie. With that said, I think that if Oscar had continued his body work on Floyd, this could have gone a different way. Floyd's ability to adjust quickly has always made him difficult to fight. Canelo felt it too.
Watching this after that paul mayweather fight. And just glad as hell I didn't buy that bullish. I almost thought boxing was just hugging for 7 rounds.
Yea every hit that damage logan scared him into hugging floyd. And because of his size that method is effective, i mean after all that fight with such a size difference would never happen in the first place so the fact that mayweather almost knocked him out in round 4 and 5 really suprised me being that he was at the highest weight slowest speed and oldest hes ever been. All in all though whoever paid to watch that bs was the people who lost lol
Shucks it appears to have been a whole lot of hugging & squeezing& holding up rumor has it Mayweather was holding Paul up so it didn't appear to look as though he had been knocked out! So freaking glad I didn't buy it
Man, this is a great fight. Floyd was definitely more accurate and retained his energy better throughout the fight, but De La Hoya really kept his pressure on. Most aggressive fighters against Floyd ended up looking foolish with their missed shots and taking that slip counter right to the face. But De La Hoya looked in it all the way. The smiles at the end say it all.

I've rewatched this fight a few times. It was close. I can see how it could be scored either way. Would have loved a rematch. De la hoya had a good game plan. Floyd his usual slick self with great timing with that right hand down the pipe.
It was only really close to those who give points to 'rabbit punching'

I've noticed that Oscar should've kept going for the body, since that's where he was mostly landing hits on Floyd. Imo Floyd used his size towards his advantage, a great move by him, ngl. Oscar kept missing trying to get hits on Floyd's head/face.
Best punch of the fight was a sharp right cross from Floyd with his back on the ropes. He catches Oscar perfectly on the chin and buckles him.

It's so crazy how Oscar De La Hoya made him fight in those big gloves and you still lost
Mayweather wanted big gloves. Bad hands. DLH had an iron chin. Big gloves didn't help DLH
@@el34glo59 OSCAR CHOSE THE GLOVES AND RING
@@NoMuShRoOmS we all know mayweather chose all the advantages in all his fights why fake the funk . And this fight was really really close , could have gone either way tbh .
@@nasty_barber88 no fake funk its facts. ...you're Most deff not s boxing fan just a casual if you dont know this, is common knowledge
The purse for this fight was 80/20 in favor of de le hoya. Crazy, de le hoya chose the gloves and weight and ring size, Mayweather has the ultimate winner’s mentality
Idk how some people think de la Hoya beat mayweather
He was tagging Floyd
Oscar was done here, gassed after 5 rounds and slower than a prime Oscar, in reality Floyd should have done much more. Possibly even stop DLH if he would have took more risks, but he was always calculated and too cautious. With his talent and pedigree
@@joystickcasa5309 The reason Mayweather didn't do more is he was trying to protect his looks from getting cuts and bruises. Otherwise the ladies wouldn't like him. Lol
Man... De LA Hoya. What a great fighter. Mayweather is just... Wow. Great fight.
Mayweather showed such amazing skills in this fight, we will never see another fighter as great as him
Based solely on these clips it looked to me like Mayweather was landing the cleaner and more telling blows with greater consistency, although Oscar did have his moments.
Lol oscar's face was impecable floyd punches like my sister and people believe he is kinda of a monster.
@@valentinfarias7134 accuracy over power m’guy. Smarter not harder m’guy (Oscar fan btw)
@@valentinfarias7134 go take 10 punches from him and see what happens
I remember when Floyd figured out Oscar’s groove and started connecting. The announcer gave me chills when he said “ and Mayweather is beginning to operate like a surgeon.” 🔥
De La Hoya was coming off a ko win over Mayorga and Mayweather had to come up to 154... yet oscar was somehow washed up... hmm
Fuck all that, ppl forgetting de la hoya was coming for the rematch but what happens? Floyd retires
If that ain’t enough look how maidana was robbed
@@miguelmartinez7001 robbed?
@@thonyraver7 de la hoya wanted the same cut and priced himself out🤷🏻♂️ aprende mija
Floyd beat him and then proceeded to beat everyone that Oscar gave the “blueprint” too easily
@King K. Rool Maidana was easy work. Both times. Manny ain’t win shit. You hate Floyd. It’s okay to say it. 50-0 speaks for itself. Manny, Maidana and Oscar all lost
@King K. Rool so you can see punches that a computer can’t? Lmfao search up the accuracy of the fight.
The best is a hammmered George Lopez going nuts in the background 😂
floyd retired for 19 months cos he didnt wanna rematch
floyd ducked fighting pacquiao for years
thats really smart or cowardly
Pacquiao was on steroids that's why it took so long to make the fight
yup ducked prime paq
Southpaws didn't give Floyd the hardest fights. Castillo,Chavez,Augustus,Delahoya, maidana & Cotto. All right handed fighters. No doubt Khan had the best chance out of all w elterweights to beat Floyd.
@ he was mayweathers mandatory TWICE but mayweather chose Khans leftovers.. so what??
Till this day I still don’t understand why Oscar didn’t win this match. He was literally throwing all the shots
he barely landed anything , and got pummeled on counters lol
@@bangladeshirealtor idk what that guy was watching. Oscar missed like crazy
The Hard shots were thrown and landed by Floyd. Dela Hoya's punches were mostly blocked and avoided. Also Dela Hoya threw many Pitty pat punches which shouldn't score points. I really wanted Oscar to win but knew he fell short here.
The fact that people call this a robbery is a joke, the highlights make it look pretty close and it was a close fight but Floyd landed 207 of 481 + 138 of 241 power punches and Oscar landed 122 of 587 + 82 of 341 power punches, you cannot say Oscar won
So by your logic Castillo won the first fight vs Mayweather lol. (Castillo also landed more total punches not just power shots). There’s 12 rounds. Combining all the punches is basically painting the same skewed picture as the highlights.
@@danielvelkovski3156 when you double their land percentage it’s pretty obvious
Great fight. Floyd landed the cleaner punches and his defense is exceptional. Oscar, although he didn't land a lot of punches, came up with a ton of combos that frustrated floyd.
If you can avoid or slip almost all punches, then I don't see how that would frustrate you :)
Great fight ??? Lol this was a good fake fight. Nothing more
floyd hater's cringe, you simply can't think oscar won this fight unless you are bias. Floyd outlanded him significantly.
If there were two people with Floyd’s tactical strategy we would be waiting years to see who punches first
Floyd belongs in a beauty spa.
Low IQ talk
Oscar, Manny, Floyd... all three of them are the best of all time ... none of them was better... it's hard to compare ... MASTERS!!!
