Björk has an air of innocence and "childishness" about her... maybe she managed to (partially) keep the openness and creativity of a child. This is part of what makes this movie so devastatingly intense to me.

gnaagren sorry but to say that art with this level of confidence and experience is childlike is a little patronizing besides being wrong, you don't get to this artistic peak without much experience and effort and to say it is innocent is a little belittling but well, im sure she doesn't care. just bugs me a bit

The first time I heard this song I thought she was downplaying the importance of sight but as I got older and many repeat listens (I love Bjork) I’m noticing now that she wasn’t doing that but rather she was comforting herself with having lost her sight. She would love to see all these things but she is making peace with the hand she was dealt in life and with that in mind this song is hopeful and brighter than any little sparks I’ve ever seen.

I think she’s telling the truth about not caring about the Great Wall or Peru, but the two things she doesn’t have a comeback for, where she just says that she doesn’t care, are when it’s about seeing her son and grandchildren. They’re the ones that really matter to her.

    • @dionisoss1846
      @dionisoss1846 Рік тому +11

Of course, there's this fatality that soon enough she won't be able to see those things and she's trying to make her peace out of it. But I understood her groundness and her pragmatism has her way to set her priority, her losing the sight, her not be able to sightseeing are no matter compared with the sake of her son. All walls are great if the roof does not fall. This is the simplest and deep truth. She's showing stoicism and wisdom here

I tought she meant Bill, who was her friend, and in fact she killed him, but that scene was just after this song. But i cant think any other reference for murder besides that. I've seen it all
    I have seen the trees
I have seen the willow leaves
    Dancing in the breeze
    I've seen a man killed
    By his best friend,
    And lives that were over
    Before they were spent.
    I've seen what I was
And I know what I'll be
    I've seen it all
There is no more to see
    You haven't seen elephants
    Kings or Peru
    I'm happy to say
    I had better to do
    What about China?
Have you seen the Great Wall?
    All walls are great
    If the roof doesn't fall
And the man you will marry
    The home you will share
    To be honest
    I really don't care
    [gibberish]
    You've never been
    To Niagara Falls
    I have seen water
    It's water, that's all
    The Eiffel Tower
    The Empire State
    My pulse was as high
    On my very first date
    And your grandson's hand
As he plays with your hair
    To be honest
    I really don't care
    [gibberish]
    I've seen it all
    I've seen the dark
    I've seen the brightness
    In one little spark
    I've seen what I chose
And I've seen what I need
    And that is enough
To want more would be greed
    I've seen what I was
And I know what I'll be
    I've seen it all
There is no more to see
    You've seen it all
    And all you have seen
    You can always review on
    Your own little screen
    The light and the dark
    The big and the small
    Just keep in mind
You need no more at all
    You've seen what you were
    And know what you'll be
    You've seen it all
There is no more to see...

For my comment, I will mention the brilliant use of the train rumbling sounds as a drumbeat in the background, the way it builds up in the beginning, and how it is used especially at the end. Many years ago, I worked at a company where my office cube was next to a cube that housed two large printers and copiers. One printer made such an interesting combination of sounds that would make a great Bjork song and its background drumbeat too, just like in this movie scene.

I'm not convinced by Peter's singing ability. I prefer the album version purely because I think Thom sings it better.

Saaame idk Thom Yorke’s voice wasn’t meant for this kind of instrumentals imo

@@k-leb4671 I guess I agree with the singing quality, but in this version I remember the lyrics are arranged a bit more like a conversation...?

I've seen a lot of films and have only just seen this film. Von Trier's work is both challenging and complex, so perhaps I was wary of that and avoided Dancer in the Dark.
But, this is one of the director's more accessible and human stories. Truly one of the most heartbreaking and moving films ever made. Bjork, the music and direction are amazing.

What an HONOR to see and hear this BRILLIANT SCENE with the UNBELIEVABLE GENIUS BJORK again. EPIC MASTERPIECE IN ITS TOTALITY, script, world-class actors, acting, love, dance, cinematography, the ending all too realistic. His love and pursuit of Selma, heartbreaking. Human suffrage. Bjork DESERVED this OSCAR, instead was mocked! BJORK, WORLD-CLASS PROTEGE WROTE THE SELMA SONGS IN THIS MOVIE, INCLUDING DANCER IN THE DARK! With gratitude .
