Nah it’s all about the components of the chord. Root note, 3rds and 5ths, leading to triads etc. for example, as people, We Are All Notes in a Chord in a Key with a Mode Ordered by a Scale
Absolutely, when you construct chords on piano as stacks of thirds it makes perfect sense what he's saying.. It is plain to see the way that a particular complex extended chord is just a simpler chord placed over a bass note
Rick….. your killing me. Watching you just rattle this stuff off like it’s an afterthought…. As a (very) novice player its like watching (or hearing in this case) magic. It seems impossible that I could ever get from here to there
Niiiiiiiiice!! That should go on One of Rick's albums! I would also be a really good intro to a song he plays live. I like that steely Dan chord he throws in also. ✨🐦
Rick, what type of effects pedal do you use to hold your cords before you play scales over them? Admin asking and asking over the last few months and I know you’re very busy.
It sounds like a harmonising "delay + hold" following - but he could screwing with us and using a backing track! Whatever the answer, I want to know too!

Anyone who's confused, construct an extended chord on a keyboard as stacks of thirds. Then you can see that your right hand is just doing some simple chord, either a basic triad, diminished triad, or a 7th chord, while left is playing another chord. Remove the fifth from your left hand chord. Then you can see how you can reconceptualize advanced chords as simply two chords stacked on top of each other. Or in Rick's simplification here, one chord over a bass note. Look into "upper structure triads" for more info.
Im listening to this over and over while watching a Tv-documentary (no sound!) about two lesbian lovers who survived the holocaust.... wow what a dreamy input, perspectives!
It’s totes hella close if not precisely it great ear my fellow thom lover. Radiohead does often use cray cray tunings us mortals are blissfully unaware of
I swear music people just name their chords a random gibberish that means nothing to secretly make fun of us normies trying to understand it.
😂

@@ZCBeats1 Blasphemy! What does music have to do with maths?!
@@CrazyChemistPL I guess you’ve never heard of the harmonic series
I nodded wisely along to this whilst thinking WTF are these chords? 🤣

I actually understood this! Knowing the chords on piano is everything.
no need to flex man

This man is so classy. UA-cam has gifted us this Star.
Can't tell if he's naming chords or tryin to bring Voldemort back
This is so wild! What a way to break it down.
Rick ya legend
That em9/11 🥵🥵🥵
The real unsung hero of these shorts is Rick's synth, I love how it just perfectly changes the drone note behind him as he explains the guitar parts
Rick….. your killing me. Watching you just rattle this stuff off like it’s an afterthought…. As a (very) novice player its like watching (or hearing in this case) magic. It seems impossible that I could ever get from here to there
A gem of "Like That!" lessson... dense and sharp like a diamond!
Damn that sounds really, really good! Especially those last few chords and progressions!
Did everyone hear the joke about what chord does a piano make when you drop it down a mine shaft?: Abm
😂
🤣
😂
Wow that guitar tone sounds amazing is it one of the Ibanez
Archtop jazz guitars ?
Thank you!! Beautiful sounding guitar!!
You should hear me play that guitar. It would sound like a cat fight at 2 in the morning - LOL
Rick this is so cool and you make it seem so obvious and easy. 😂
Please make an album of you playing guitar! I'd buy it as I'm sure many of your followers would!
Gorgeous!!! What a gift!! Thank you!
I'm bewildered, like that!
You should do more acoustic stuff Rick that sounded really nice
Great tone and arpeggio skills
Focus about 1973!! Nice work Rick.
Amazing guitar tone!!
"Like that."
Freaking awesome.
So lush, Ric! Some lovely Pat flavours in there...!👌👌👌X
Another great quick lesson
Beautiful sounds 😊

That was BEAUTIFUL!
And you say you’re not a real guitar player. Well, you are in my book. Nice chops also. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
He is a master for sure
definitely a master but his piano playing is even better imo
Lovely tone on the guitar! Blessings.
That synth over those soft chords sound beautiful 😍
Love these chords!
Beautiful guitar
Quick, concise and to the point! You’re awesome☺️🎶
I just play for enjoyment mostly western style. I'm impressed with the dexterity, nice.
Rick, you just make that sound soooo smooth. Tickles da ear drums!
I LOVE IT! THANK YOU RICK🙏☯️
Geeez man!! I needed this!
Mmm. Yes. Indeed. These notes are indeed notes.
I wish I knew as much about anything as this man knows about music.
While I can't tell what this lesson is all about, I do believe that Ibanez guitar is awesome!
Everybody knows Db7(#9#5) is just Fmaj7b5/C#. Didn't really need a video on that.
Lmao it’s plain as day fam I concur
Rick, I see you with that Jazz Box and it is soo fitting. More jazzy stuff, please.
Huh? Sounds amazing but can you repeat that in “clueless”…? No idea what you just said! 🤷🏻♂️🤣

Everytime I try to play any of these chords a worm hole that leads to another opens right beside me

Awesome!!!
I like your funny words magic man!
I really like this one.
That a flat minor 11 makes me think of tears for fears. Not sure which song though.
It's the first chord on the bridge of Advice for the Young at Heart
That's a lot of information in 1 minute.

I think I'm good at this stuff until I watch Rick talk about it like it's putting spices in food.
Dude! You are so sick!
That last little gmaj7 arpeggio lick was nasty
I was once a major minor, but I went flat baroque. Now if I can find E sharp I can play the C flat Minor sharp 3rd triad.
Brilliant...

Arpeggios for the soul…😢❤
You should be writing some songs Rick.
That "almost" sounds like music.

Could we get Rick playing to a Jazz track?

Rick, your definition of "common chords" is a little different from mine.
Yes. I agree.
Obviously Rick!
Rick whatever happened to the Bee Gees? Was there ever a song they did that you would comment on?

I love how he finishes the explanation with a "like that" .. 😶
I had a feeling the weird chords could be described as something simpler like slash chords
