While I really liked Van the Man in his early years, a good friend turned me on to this live record in the mid 1980’s and it totally blew my mind. Since then I feel like discovering his music has been an incredible journey into the depths of spirituality and pure raw Celtic Soul with an extra helping of American Blues. Van is perhaps the greatest living musician in the extended pop genre.

Always has the best backing band.

PeWee Ellis on flute and sax. He was in James Brown's band. John Donne is a 17th Century poet. There's also a mention of Yeats 19th and 20th century Irish poet. These poets along with William Blake among others have a influence on his music. Along with many blues and jazz artists. When I hear Van chewing a phrase, he reminds me of John Lee Hooker. Going to his concerts can be like a spiritual religious experience.

Nice organ work by John Allair, but the song really kicks into gear around 4:24 when the drums take off. Sounds like two drummers here, Van Hooke and Tom Donlinger...great stuff.

    A celebration of poets/writers. ;)
"Down through the weeks of ages
In the moss borne dark dank pools
Rave on, down through the industrial revolution
    Empiricism, atomic and nuclear age
Rave on down through time and space down through the corridors
Rave on words on printed page
Rave on, you left us infinity
And well pressed pages torn to fade
    Drive on with wild abandon
    Uptempo, frenzied heels
Rave on, Walt Whitman, nose down in wet grass
    Rave on fill the senses
On nature's bright green shady path
Rave on Omar Khayyam, Rave on Kahlil Gibran
Oh, what sweet wine we drinketh
    The celebration will be held
We will partake the wine and break the Holy bread
Rave on let a man come out of Ireland
    Rave on on Mr. Yeats
Rave on down through the Holy Rosey Cross
Rave on down through theosophy, and the Golden Dawn
Rave on through the writing of A Vision
Rave on, Rave on, Rave on, Rave on, Rave on, Rave on
Rave on John Donne, rave on thy Holy fool
Down through the weeks of ages
In the moss borne dark dank pools
Rave on, down though the industrial revolution
    Empiricism, atomic and nuclear age
Rave on words on printed page"

You mentioned channeling his inner Jim Morrison. Interestingly, when Them played the Whisky A Go Go in 1966 the Doors were the house band - on their last night the Doors joined Them to close out their set with "Gloria". Too bad it wasn't recorded. As John Densmore
(the Doors drummer) has been quoted, there were two drummers, two keyboards, two of everything - even two Morrisons.

Yes, his Northern Irish accent is vastly different from his singing voice. And yeah, he slurs his voice at times: manipulates words & sounds like like the warlock he is. For my money, he is the greatest.

I have to give mad credit to your Patreons for their musical taste and to you two for trusting them. It's a little risky allowing yourselves to be lead away from the radio-friendly top 40 comfort zone but I think the rewards are obvious. You guys are getting the real insiders tour and it's a fun revisit for the rest of us.

if I had 100 Van Morrison songs on my jukebox I don't think this song would make the cut... and I do love Van... got blighty potatoes in my DNA too... but we moved to that new world.
let's just be blunt real for a minute... Van Morrison can be downright rude... like he's got way better things to do... than to have to have fun, just for your benefit while he's playing too.
he's not exactly masterful at the repartee with the audience stuff... he can get pretty slurry with his phrasing at times too.... glad he gave up the booze.. still a perfectionist tho.
I forgive him everything because his music is that good but I'd never wanna work with the maestro... I'll post a funny article that gives an idea what it's like to play with The Man.

    • @JuandeFucaU
      @JuandeFucaU 3 роки тому +1

“The call came at short notice, rehearsals were rushed and he had little time to become au fait with The Man’s way of directing the band with hand signals. Come the first gig, everything went well until Van started them on ‘Summertime in England,’ a long-time highlight of the show and one where, if moved, he takes it WAY DOWN and plays with the dynamics of silence. [Irish drummer] Dave [Early] on his drum-riser is looking down on Van’s back. The latter with a chopping movement signals the horns to drop out. Dave, with his eyes peeled, adjusts his stickwork. Another cryptic hand movement and now we’re down to bass, Van’s warbling and Dave, who has switched to brushes. The audience are rapt. There’s the odd yelp and audible sigh. Another sign from Van: palm down as if gently bouncing a balloon. The bass has slowed to an intermittent pulse, Dave is now whispering with the brushes. Van has hitched his Zen caravan to THE MOMENT. Dave is bug-eyed, sweating. Van reaches his right hand behind his back to signal to him. The hand is upturned, claw-like and clenching open and closed. 'What the!’ thinks Dave, 'if I take it down any more it won’t be there at all.’ SUDDENLY another handchop and the brass are back in and the band are in full flight down the final straight. Chatting with Van after the gig, Early mentions that he couldn’t quite understand the 'clenched claw’ signal. 'Oh that,’ says Van, repeating the gesture. 'That means I have you by the balls!’”
