To fully understand the Puma (and the Marder), you need to know that the German army has a different doctrine/philosophy for the use of mechanized infantry and their IFV/APCs than other NATO forces.
Most NATO armies follow the American "Battlefield Taxi" model, where the IFV/APC will drive infantry close to the front, dismount them and then either retreat to a overwatch position to give standoff fire support from there, or leave the infantry to their own devices, to independently do cavalry work, like scout for the MBTs, or pick off soft targets at the edge of the battle and stuff like that.
Based on their WW2 experience, the Germans have a different approach.
They really take the "Combined Arms" thing seriously and want their MBTs, mechanized infantry and IFV to work together, simultaneously, shoulder to shoulder, if you will.
Most modern armed forces claim to be following a Combined Arms doctrine, but in most cases it is more of a "Alternating Arms" doctrine, where different types of units might operate close to each other, but will usually try to achieve different goals, attack different targets and stay out of each other's way.
The MBTs will do their thing over there, while infantry does something else over here and the cavalry lurks around the flanks and so on.
Or they will operate in waves, where the MBTs come first and then infantry follows to mop up what the MBTs left over.
The Germans on the other hand try to overwhelm the enemy's ability to deal with any single element by mixing them all together and letting them operate like one unit, basically.
Their IFVs stay with the infantry and the MBTs, while getting other support (like artillery) where possible. No single element is ever supposed to operate without the others.
That is why for example, even though it was a German guy who invented it, the German army never used explosive reactive armor on their tanks. It would have been too much of a risk for their own infantry which was supposed to operate around the tanks and very close to them.
It is also why the Marder and the Puma are not amphibious.
They are not supposed to ever go where the Leopard 2 tanks can't go with them, so giving them the ability to swim made no sense.
And of course they need heavier armor when operating side by side with the MBTs and facing the same opposition, while at the same time having no use for bigger guns, like some variants of the CV90 for example, which have a 90mm cannon. Would be pointless to strap a MBT gun to a IFV when that IFV is always accompanied by the real MBTs anyways.
The Germans take that Combined Arms doctrine so seriously, that they basically split their army in two.
There is the main, heavy force that is all about following that doctrine and their special kind of mechanized infantry, which they call "Panzergrenadiere" is the infantry element of that.
The problem is that that heavy force can't go everywhere.
For all those places where the main "Spear Point" part of the army can't go, they have the so called "Jaeger" units.
Those are all sorts of light infantry (regular Jaegers, mountaineers, which they call "Gebirgsjaeger" and paratroopers, which are called "Fallschirmjaeger") and they are considered a different type of infantry from the Panzergrenadiere and separate from the main part of the army, because they don't follow the Combined Arms doctrine.
They are supposed to operate without heavy support, do hit and run attacks, lay ambushes and other semi guerrilla type of warfare and accordingly they get kind of a semi special forces training.
This creates this weird situation where the German army kind of doesn't really have any regular, old fashioned infantry.
All the infantry is either those Panzergrenadiers, who are specialized for basically doing tank warfare and the rest are the Jaegers, which are this weird half "guerrilla militia in uniform", half "semi special forces" thing.
    I digress.
The point is just that German IFVs are a bit different because their doctrine is different and that is why they never sell well on the international market.
Even those countries that bought the Leopard MBTs, never bought the Marder or the Puma, despite them being specifically designed to operate together with the Leopards, because they didn't really fit into anyone else's doctrine.
The Marder's 20mm cannon isn't really fit for the American style "Battlefield Taxi" role, or Cavalry work and the Puma is too heavy.
That is why Rheinmetall developed the Lynx, basically as a lightweight, more Bradley- or CV90 style export version of the Puma.

Like it. I Hope the Polish Army won't go for our new IFV Borsuk and will stick to something heavier and more robust to follow the same (or close) model for backing up the Leo brigades. It should work this way cuz the armored brigades are self-sufficient organisms when the Infantry has its own model of APCs + the heavy fist of few tanks to ram the battlefront here and there. With specialized troops (rangers with APCs as well) of the fast engagement on top of that. Those can come close with the airborne folks as they do the training together from time to time. All things covered - no IFV for now. We live here now with the worst govs ever - so no wonder a swimming Rosomak IFV is the subject of any consideration other than the export.

That philosophy goes back quite a long time, Julius Caesar found the auxiliary German cavalry very effective because it operated with lightly armed very fast running infantry that would run with their cavalry amongst the horses so they would always have cavalry support. Needless to say when they took on other enemy cavalry they always won because one German would spear at you from the same horseback level with his spear while his buddy down low would spear at you from below.

Also, while we got more and more arrogant, fancying ourselves building great fantastic beasts (like tigers that took 90 seconds to turn the turret 360, couldn't turn the turret against rise and could hardly be recovered due to its weight), others were learning from our early successes, building vehicles that are mobile and would outmaneuver us:

Excellent video! Still I have a few corrections/additions:
Protection: In the early development phase there were 3 protection variants:
A for Air transport via the A400M
B for train transport (german: Bahntransport)
    C for Combat
The C variant is the basic fighting configuration. At the other variants some modular things were taken off to match the weight and size requirements for their intended transport device.
The B variant was later abandoned because train transport is also possible with the C variant. So nowadays there actually just two variants left.
The A variant is armoured against 30mm at the front and against 14.5mm all around. When the additional armour from the C variant is fitted on, the Puma becomes armoured from all sides (except the rear I believe) against 30mm, and the turret gets the same protection. Also the roof gets an additional armor against bomblets. With this variant the vehicle has also protection against RPGs from all sides due to the ERA in the Add-On-Armour (in the A variant its just the front).
That specific ERA ist kind of interesting because it cant harm nearby infantry, which was a requirement of the german army.
The german army uses the C variant as their standard loadout.
Regarding the 5.56mm coaxial machine gun, it proved to be too light for that purpose and its intended to replace it with an 7.62mm MG in the coming upgrade.
The standard smoke loadout is 8 cartridges per vehicle.
And last but not least the puma has a crew of 3 and an infantry troop of 6.

When unfortunate circumstances rendered all four German submarines out of service the Media was right there taunting the Navy over it - and even 4 years later people seem to believe that Germany still doesn't have any submarines in service.
Or that one time they mixed up (or blatantly lied) about the readiness of our fighters, claiming only four of them to be "ready at all times". What they didn't know was those four being our two scramble pairs which were sitting armed and fueled right next to the runway to take off within minutes after alert. Arming and fueling a plane takes some time so the planes wouldn't be able to go up within minutes = The Luftwaffe is not ready for action.

Many of the technologies used are backed up or redundant, or another system can step in and take over broken or failed sensors. The driver and commander or the loader can take over each other's duties from their seats. So even if something fails, it is quite certain that it would not be a total failure and the vehicle would remain operational. So you don't have to shit your pants when it fails - it takes a lot more than a failed sensor to keep this device from doing its job.

    Is that thing ready yet?
The last time I read about it they still had some issues. People above 1.84m height are not allowed inside.
41 Pumas had to be upgraded for the NATO VTJF Mission. Additional costs: 723 million Euro.
    Spareparts are scarce.
In a presentation with a german camera team they had some problem with the electrical system. Supposedly the e-fuse blew which would cause the tank to stop. They had to reset the fuse to get it running again.
That was like half a year ago. Not sure how many problems remain as of today since you rarely hear anything about them in public media.
But our ministry of defense is notorious for messing up contracts and ending up with equipment that has issues, is delayed, lacks spare parts and is way more expensive than it was supposed to be.

yendak these problems probably still persist and will be fixed over time. But I doubt the height problem claim, it sounds very much like the headline one or two years ago, that after some 40 years of usage they finally figured out that the cockpit lighting in the Tornado is to bright and therefore it’s unusable for night time flights, when in reality the report, that was used for this headline was written by one pilot who felt like the lighting was a little bit to bright for his personal preference.
Also every MOD is notorious for these dumb mistakes, the British for example:
-their Challenger tanks are the only tanks that use two part ammo, the MOD closed down the only factory that produces that round years ago and now the British are desperately looking for a new gun, because the use by date on their ammo is coming up
-the list of the problems of their new Type 45 destroyers is so long, that it has its own section in the Wikipedia article, the biggest is probably that they are so loud, that Russian subs can hear them hundreds of miles away
The other MODs aren’t better, with project like the F-35, Zumwalt and Armata.

What the public often doesn't realize - and the politics aren't helping for setting things straight (because they and their incompetence are often the culprit) - is the fact the costs explode not because of bad engineering - but constant modification requests. These vehicles aren't engineered to a set time line. They are engineered - then a couple of vehicles are built - and tested in the field - and then ongoing modifications happen.
Even while the first batch of vehicles are delivered - requested modifications after the fact have to be done and retrofitted while building the series.
Altough it's called an "industry" - these companies operate more as "manufacturers". This doesn't work like the car industry for example in high volumes industrialized production.
Also - the PUMA is not a Rheinmetall only vehicle. It's a cooperation between KMW and Rheinmetall.

  • @Apfsds120

Main gun has Optomechanical connection from gunsights to gunner . It is no different to traditional manned turret in terms of vulnerability. Pumas turret is unmanned but still has basket below it. I had a chance to have a look into one during exhibition. The hanging seats and zip bags for rifles are genius. Interior is really tidy (anybody who was hit by flying ammobox or rifle during rollover or ied will agree :D). The rubber hedgehog all over top of the vehicle protects it against bomblets and heat submunition. And integrated spike allows puma gunner to shoot over horizon, fire and forget, switch to atgm camera and change target midflight. Each wheel module consist of one fuel tank suspension and one wheel. It is easy to maintan and replace, and you can cut off damaged fuel tank and not lose too much fuel. In addition fuel tanks provide addition protection to sides from outside. KMW (maybe with diehl ?) is now working on segmented hybrid rubber tracks for Puma. It will consist of 1-2 meter segments of hybrid rubber track. This solution will provide all benefits of rubber tracks combined with easo of maintenance of traditional tracks.

"It is no different to traditional manned turret in terms of vulnerability."
The point isnt better protection of the turret. The point is that without people in the turret you dont need to waste nearly as much armor on it. That means you save weight to play with for increasing the armor protection of the main hull, while keeping the thing light enough to be air transportable ina A400M.
Turrets can be replaced. Lost lives cant.

There's no alternative because those that can counter are either divided, or aren't interested at all. Then asking why they are losing to china when their inaction was one of the main culprits.

Hey Mat when you were pointing out the cameras, the ones you marked yellow are not actually cameras this are sensors for the "MUSS". This system uses the sensors to track if a laser is targeting the tank and allows to use the board smoke in 3 different ways, one of is full automatic, means the tank will use smoke in the direction the laser is coming from.
On the other hand with the new Puma version there are a high number of cameras surrounding the tank.

Recently I saw a report regarding the Puma that it suffers a lot of technical difficulties. The opposition said that it was rolled out of development too early and that certain flaws were only discovered after the fist batch was delivered. To save cost the government did not order enough spare parts. This means that there is a shortage of working tanks to train troops - tanks have to be cannibalized for spare parts - use two to create one working tank.
In the report the tanks engine stopped in the open field - to restart the engine the main plug had to be pulled to remove power and hard reboot the system - taking about 6 minutes. You cannot afford 6 minutes downtime in battle.

Matsimus - thanks for the vid, but Canada is NOT considering the purchase of this vehicle, as suggested at 10:40. Yes, the Canadian Army launched a Close Combat Vehicle (CCV) acquisition project as a result of experience in Afghanistan, but it was unceremoniously cancelled in 2013 after the government slashed the Army's baseline budget. Puma was never a candidate to begin with; only CV90, VBCI, and Pirahna 5 were considered. (The project, if carried to its conclusion, would have had the very curious effect of giving the Canadian Army two IFVs - one being the successful CCV candidate, and the other being the upgraded in-service LAV 3. Something had to give, and since the LAV 3 was more numerous, was assembled in Canada, and jobs depended on the upgrade, it survived to become the LAV 6.0.)

The Puma is in its current state a hopeless desaster and the most embarrassing failure of a project that the army has ever produced. Folks call it "Pannenpanzer" (Fail-tank) for a reason.
The tank cant safely transport soldiers taller than 185cm.
The 5.56mm Coaxial MG was a dumb idea, that was immediately scrapped and required a refit as soon as serial production started.
EVERYTHING is automatic, meaning that hatches, turret, motor and everything else has no failsafes for when the system crashes or power supply fails. This means in case of a system failure soldiers are more or less trapped inside (Thats why it gets called 'Germany's most expensive Sarcophagus')
System breakdowns are EXTREMELY common. Failures that require minutelong reboots can happen several times to a single tank on a single day in the field. Furthermore, complete breakdowns, where the tank completely shuts down and can't be reset by its operators happen nearly every time the thing is used. Thats why soldiers have called the thing "Pannenpanzer" in the news and stated on air, that they would not want to be deployed with the vehicle.
then theres some minor issues, like an incomplete leadership and radiosystem, that will eventually get fixed. Hopefully.
Or the fact that the thing is super cramped and hard to exit in case of emergency.
I'm fairly hopeful that most of these issues will be resolved in one way or the other

ADS also can be integrated or refitted into the new MUSS 2.o system*, so we'll likely see it on the Pumas sooner or later.

The problem (in peace time) is legal red tape. German tanks are actually all street legal.
But if the computer system doesnt work as planned, that means the cameras arent working as planned. If some of the cameras are offline, the Puma driver cant see as well as he should, esp to the sides. And the commander cant just pop his hatch and check from the turret (because its unmanned). Thus there is an increased risk of crushing infantrists or, worse, civilians.
So the standing order is: computer doesnt work as it should? Stop right there until the problem is solved.
Would look very different on a Belo-Russian battlefield.

I served for 2 years in the Bundeswehr as a panzer grenadier. It's just a shame our government have no interest in a strong and more active army. There are realy great defense companys in Germany but they can't reach their full potential because of politic reasons.

GR8 Vids! Puma, Lynx, & Ajax ( my fave). But I'm confused. The Lynx comes as the KF 31 & KF 41, w/6 road wheel stations, right. The Puma is or isn't the KF 41 also w/ 5or6 stations? 🤔....hmmmm. I may have missed something. Yes, I know the Ajax is a deferent "Fish" being related to the "Ascod" family. Many thanx 👍 be safe 🦊🎃

A little information: The weapon has been moved slightly to the side so that analog optics are available in an emergency.
What made the development of the turret and electronic weaponry so complicated.

    • @jonny2954
      @jonny2954 3 роки тому

Not just in an emergency, they are used alongside the digital optics. Analog optics still have a much higher effective resolution than digital ones. In case of the Puma the analog optic has a effective resolution of more than six megapixels, that's about fourteen times (!) as much as a digital CCD camera optic.

If you see closely all the cameras have wipers so don't need to worry about cameras getting covered with dust or mud

Did I hear Canada is considering these as an addition to the Leopard 2A6 for mechanized warfare!? Would they be attached to the current light infantry (mechanized) battalions mixed in with the LAV6 or attached to the armoured regiments?

  • @revolverDOOMGUY

I must say that the new airburst smart rounds are absolutely devastating for infantry and seems just capable of dealing with so many things. Low tier air threaths, basically DENYING cover advantage (making them kinda like artillery), destroying medium armor with APFSDS rounds... Coupled with ATGMS and maybe even ground to air missiles a modern IFV can deal with pretty much everything. Of course it's not GREAT at anything (beside hammering enemy infantry), but they can hold theyr own and help infantry with every threat. The new model for IFVs seems to be Jack of all trades, master of none. This is really brilliant, as you never REALLY know what you will end up againist, and infantry always needs support.

Awesome video and platform, thank you! I wanted some Puma content. I think it's fantastic, and it would be a great tracked platform for Canada as well. My only criticism is that a 5.56 coaxial support weapon is a pretty big oversight. At a minimum a 30 caliber coax, I mean c'mon! Other than that, good to go 👍

5:44 The German Army propably didn't choose the 5,56mm MG because of light wight and ammunition: At the time the Puma was in development, the Bundeswehr still had the 7,62mm MG3 (basically a MG42 from WWII) as their main MG on all their existing Vehicles (Marder, Leopard) and in ther infantry squads. But the MG3 was old, the infantry was about to get the new MG4 (5,56mm) and a new 7,62mm MG was in Development, so they first put the MG4 on the Puma. In 2018 they started to replace the MG4 on the Puma with the new 7,62mm MG5.

The most modern and best IFV in the world. The only reasons why it isn't bought yet is that it's too heavy and hella expensive.

I'd still prefer a top hatch with flexi mount, just in case all main gun and coax fail, at least you can still provide covering fire. Apart from that, I absolutely love the Puma, such a nice bit of kit 🤘😈

Its Part of the Blackout Light System: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackout_light , called Leitkreuz, "for use when driving a convoy at night when it is necessary for the vehicles to maintain concealment by limiting their ability to be seen by the enemy."

Hi Matsimus, nice vids as always, wondering if you have had a look at the new Hanwha AS-21 Redback being proposed for the Australian Army, one of the final 2 up against the Rheinmetall Lynx KF-41 ? Interesting piece of kit being offered alongside the acquisition of the K-9 Thunders, a few clips appearing of testing online now with final selection between it and the Lynx by 2022, interesting program again with a new range of IFV's appearing in the word market :)
    Keep the them coming
    Cheers
