3-minute time control is pretty rough for learning a new variant, realistically having it be 5 or 10 minutes would be better to understand things. Makes it pretty entertaining though.

If you're an experienced chess player who intends to teach a beginner, I think it's a great idea to play some of these "weird-pieces chess". It gives you an appreciation of just how much mental energy it takes for a beginner even just to register that a move is possible. Maybe it will help you pace your teaching better.
As usual, Ben Finegold puts it best: (and I'm summarising here)

I watched your 185 moves match just before and when you talked about your queen not being able to "move like that", it made me think about the hawk, and here you are playing with it.

Petition to officially change the knight's name to horse
Chess originated in India and the real names of pieces were indeed Knight = Horse, Bishop = Camel, Rook = Elephant.. They were meant to represent Horse mounted, Camel mounted and Elephant mounted soldiers.
A lot of Indians don't even know what Bishop even means.. It's some position in Church from what I understand.

in german the knight is "officially" called the "jumper", but afaik pretty much everyone calls it horse
(yes, jumper is a hilarious name. and yes, we also call the bishop the "runner")
At 5:50 doesnt Knight f6 just win the Queen? Eric says his knook would see the Queen but It is check and besides it is defended

You win the queen for your knook. The question is how much you won with that trade. I would argue the knook is almost the same value as the queen if not even more. Im more confused about 8:50. Did eric just didnt see the free queen or is it defended with some insane tactic im unable to see?
@@marxmags6189 mm yeah that may be it. For 8:50 I think he just didnt see it because of short time and the fact that it is a new piece he isnt used to, I certainly don't see any tactic
He would have also lost his Queen if black take Knight with his bishop, threatening Whites Queen in the process. Overall, I think white actually would lose the trade

If you want to go deep into the rabbit hole of variants and new pieces, I highly suggest checking out ChessCraft. It's a computer game with a whole array of unique pieces and rules, and even lets you make your own concepts

Yeah is a good game, besides you can make pieces win a interesting skills. Atack without move, casting, enemy piece neart you can't move, be uncapturable etc.
Your moves can pass enemy pieces (jump like Knight but in diagonal or files, move like Quuen But backwards move like Knight, etc.
I’m dying there is a point where both players hang pieces over and over. Eric leaves a free queen up because I think he thought an elephant was a hawk.

Capablanca invented a chess variant with the same special pieces, but they start on the board already which is expanded to 80 squares.
In my opinion, the queen is still generally the best piece followed by the hawk and then the elephant. The hawk being able to mate a king in the corner with no assistance is actually crazy, but I think still not enough to make it better than a queen. Unless Yasser says differently.
Idk what Yasser says about it, but hear me out here:
Indeed, being able to mate unassisted is crazy, but the Hawk lacks the ability to force the King into a corner the way a Rook could
So it's gonna be weaker in endgame for the same reason that mating with a Bishop and Knight is tricky

Why is a hawk better than an elephant? If you remove the knight movements it's just a bishop vs a rook. I do understand that the bishop no longer has the single color weakness, but there's no way that would make it _that_ much more powerful.

16:27 I analysed this position with my engine, the best continuation it suggested was Ne5+ Exe5 Hxe5+ eventually winning the bishop and both rooks as well (so checkmate would only be a matter of time, but it didn't find a concrete mating line)

Yasser has an in depth video (I believe on the chessbrah channel) explaining some of his schess theory. In it, he talks about the relative value of the hawk and elephant. If my memory is correct, I believe he argues the hawk is slightly weaker than the queen or worth roughly 7 pawns, whereas the elephant is just has strong, if not stronger, than the queen, roughly worth 9-10 pawns

The R/N combo is also known as the chancellor or empress, and the B/N combo as the princess, cardinal or archbishop.

There is also a variant where a triple combination piece exists, basically a Queen x Knight, I think it's called amazon.

Hawks are better than knight+bishop because the two moves complement each other weakness nicely.
What about chess where the pieces have hitpoints and attack damage? The pawns attack forward, and each turn you can attack with any piece that has an attack.

In move 36, 8:41 you had a crazy elephant to f6+ and its forking the blakc elephant so he takes and than you take with your hawk to fork the queen and the king winning a queen at the end of the trade

Bishop used to be elephant and would only travel two squares at a time diagonally. In fact it's not a bishop hat it's elephants trunk.

If queen is a bishop+rook, and it's cost is bishop's 3 + rook's 5 + fusion's 1 = 9,
then elephant is prob the same but -1 as less manuverable (8),
and hawk is horse's 3 + bishop's 3 + fusion's 1 = 7. What do you think about it?

In my experience Elephant ≈ 8.5 and Hawk ≈ 7.5.
But on larger boards the Bishop is worth more than the horse (4pc) in my opinion Queen = 9.5 Chancellor ≈ 7.75-8 Archbishop 7.
For example Rook on 8x8 board =5, General (King (3)+ Knight (3) ) worth 5.75-6.
But in 4pc board or similar Rook (long range) Can move on 26 squares, General (short range) always 16 squares, in this situation Rook (5)> general (4.25)> Bishop (3.75-4)
In endgames General better, is a defensive piece instead the Rook is better in Middle game and is a atack piece.

all fun and games but what about a combination of rook and bishop?
Hawk is a weak name to me. In a similar format I've heard it called the Archbishop. Seems on point!

KnRook: 6 points
KnBishop: 7 points
The queen is still the best piece. The reason I rank it this way is because the KnRook doesn't have the combo potential to make it worth more. It's a rook that can show up on the 8th rank very unexpectedly and is good at fighting closed/early games, but is little more than a rook in the endgame.
KnBishops however, are much more nasty. They naturally dominate the center of the board in a way the KnRook just can't handle. Plus, it's a bishop that functions strong in both closed AND open games, and it always has a battery option as long as a single pawn stands on the board. PLUS, as soon as the g pawn is pushed in a King-side castle, the KnBishop becomes pure death on the f3/f6 square.
I think they should call the Knight Rook the "Kook" :P
Chancellor(RN)>Archbishop(BN)

Queen defeat Rook in endgame, Chancellor maybe But well played not, Rook vs Archbishop are draw (similar to Rook vs Bishop diference)
Queen best perpetual check, more easy checkmate and control 7 squares near to King, Chancellor too But more dificult to avail, Archbishop 5 squares.
Weakness of Chancellor (diagonal), of Archbishop (rows and columns) Queen (Knight) the other pieces are weak to large range atack the Queen not.
By the way the Amazona (12.5-13) defeat Chancellor in endgame.
And Archbishop + Chancellor vs Amazona is a draw.
@@parzival2114 Chesscraft AI is poor since ot seems to underestimate leapers but both chancellor & archbishop can leap so it should underestimate both instead of only 1 of them

FM Ralph Betza noted that the queen may be slightly stronger than the chancellor in the endgame, but that the chancellor, on the other hand, has a greater ability to give perpetual checks and salvage a draw in an otherwise lost game. Unlike the queen, which can move in 8 different directions, the chancellor can move in 12.

A simple question who is better Wildebeest (Camel + Knight) or Rook. I think that the Rook is better in large boards like XXL Chess (5.25) Wildebeest (4.5) But in 8x8 or 10x 8 board are ≈ equal. Rook (5) control 14 squares and Wildebeest (4.75) until 16 more frecuent 12 and on corner 4. Rook is more versatile and useful in endgames But in Middle game Wildebeest is more tricky But is vulnerable to diagonal and file atack and endgame is a bit dumb on stop a passed pawns.
Wildebeest worth more than a Rook in 8x8

I guess there would be no such thing as underpromotion to knight in this game. You just have 3 almost equal choices.
How much those new pieces are worth is an interesting question. If I were to guess it'd be queen (rook + bishop) = 9, rook + knight = 8, and knight + bishop = 7.
yea, a queen does still seem a little bit stronger than the others. Full board control + control of all 8 squares around her is extremely useful especially for checkmates.
No idea how strong hte other pieces are though. Definitely more than 6 but less than 9 if I had to say. Hawk is probably stronger than 7 if I had to guess, maybe like a 7.5? idk, who knows.
@@eragon78 Maybe. I kept them at whole numbers because they look nicer. Definitely think it goes queen > elephant > hawk though. I judged them by how well they did against a king on the side of the board. A defended queen can mate all by herself. A defended elephant can stalemate the king. A hawk can't do either. Hawk seems to be a really good supporting piece, but not quite the heavy hitters that the rook and its combinations are.
@@cmck362 A hawk can mate a king all on its own actually I think. If a king is in a corner, say A1, and the hawk is on C3, thats checkmate assuming no other pieces are around. The hawk covers A1 and B2 by bishop moves, and B1 and A2 with Knight moves while also being out of the king's range.
But yea, that said I do think the Hawk is still the worst one as its a little tricky to use. Its probably a little better than the Elephant in the mid-game, but I would imagine its worse in the endgame. Having a bishop's movement in the midgame is a lot better than a rook's, but once you remove a lot of the pawns and the board opens up more, rook moves are very strong and rooks cover better squares all at once as it can shut down entire files easily cutting the king off.
But yea, its still a tricky thing to say. We probably wouldnt be able to figure it out unless someone actually ran it through a proper engine for a dedicated period of time and see what the engine thinks.
Another thing to consider though is that while the hawk is a bishop, its also a bishop that can change what color squares its on. Even ignoring the other utility of the knight moves, that makes it stronger than a normal bishop being able to switch whether its on the light squares or dark squares.

The rook-knight is worth roughly the same as a queen, while the bishop-knight is about a pawn weaker
