It was all over the radio up here in NY since it's release. Since stranger things everyone went back to the original. This was the first version i ever heard
It feels a lot like Kate Bush’s version is post-grief. Whereas they’d accepted the situation, this version feels raw. Denial, anger, bargaining… it’s all there.
@L I'm pretty sure the song might literally be about making a deal with god to trade places with god. Evidence: At the end of the Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill - Live on Wogan 1985 version of the music video, she for seemingly no reason pulls out a bow and arrow and points it at god. Also, trading places with anyone else would not allow one to run up that building. Or have no problems. Unless she delusionally believes whoever she is trading places with has no problems, which is entirely possible. I think the literalist interpretation is the most likely, though, in this case.
... with enormous respect for Kate Bush, I can, personally, say that I find Meg's cover to be a masterpiece... that both carries-on and improves upon the genuine piece-of-art that was the original. It's hard to imagine that this song could have become any more powerful. Yet... that is the indescribable impact of Meg's voice and personality.
I have never heard of this artist before-but I’m a huge fan of the original. Honestly, I expected to be disappointed. I am blown away. The concept, execution, and new recorded version are all UNBELIEVABLE. So good.
Listening to your cover of "Running Up That Hill" for the past 3+ months since it's been released have been nothing short of an amazing experience for me and now that this awesome video is here, it just deepens and intensifies my love for this song! Meg, your explanation of what this video represents is so beautiful and I hope that we can all use this amazing work of art to make positive and healthy changes in our own lives and in others. You have done an incredible job staying true to Kate's original and yet you made your cover stand out with your unbelievable energy, enthusiasm, creativity, and passion! Add the fact that you shared your vision with the wonderfully talented, young, up and coming artists at H.O.L.A., just made this even better! I'm so proud of you, Meg!
King C.O.D : I like their version too. But this one just blows me away!! I was 16 when Kate’s original came out and I loved it immediately! It is very rare for a cover to be better than the original! For me this one is!! Cheers
Kristi McGowan/ Darko’s Cellar Door I completely agree with you about Placebo's cover - it's good and I personally think that Meg's version is worlds better as well. She has the energy and soul that really brings this song alive. I've listened to many covers of 'RUTH' and have yet to find one that gets the heart stirring like Meg's cover does.
Some songs are good, some are haunting in a way that makes you feel like your soul has been in contact with another soul. This song lays me bare and opens old wounds
Heh…. I another person that seems to have been through the same amount as I have. A comment like this is only made by someone that has been hurt, and hurt others too. Shame and pain, love and forgiveness, suffering and joy… this version of this song brings those feelings to that type of soul. Hope you’re doing well now, bro. I have a feeling you are.
A few notes: -Myers did an absolutely wonderful job capturing the underlying emotion of the original song; the frustration, the desperation, the fierceness of it all, it's just perfect. It's rare for me to say I like a cover better than the original, but I think I can say that in this case! Though part of that may just be that the somewhat more modern sound of this cover is more pleasing to my ears--I'm a child of the 00s, what can I say lol. -the kids did a delightful job with their pictures ❤️ so much creativity on display here! I especially liked-- -Tom signing his name in great big letters on his page; he was very proud of his work! -all the kids who drew epic space battles and astronauts and aliens in the wide shots -the kids who drew fun backgrounds with the tree and grass and flowers--I saw some houses, some forest backgrounds, etc. -the kids who filled their pages with colorful, abstract patterns, zigzags and swirls and stripes -some kids added in special effects of their own, beams of color and magical light, I think I saw at least one add a cape to the superhero butterfly -the kiddo who got the very last frame of the video, and I'm sure they learned it was the last picture and they were so excited to write a great big "THE END" as a send-off for us I hope these kids got to see their work once it was all done! I can't imagine how excited I would be, if I were in kindergarten and I got to color in a picture for a real music video that the whole world would get to see. What a fun project!
This rendering of the classic Kate Bush song preserves the ambiguity of the joy and pathos inherent in the original lyrics. Well done, both lyrically and visually.
Richard, I thought just that this afternoon. I am quarantined in Brazil with my mother, afraid of what is to come. I found Meg Myers & Kate Bush through this song blowing up via Stranger Things. On YT, I came across so many artists who had done the cover, before the song blew up (again, it was an 80's hit). Most were okay, some were really good, but only one was truly otherworldly...to the point where, to me, it's even better than their original. The original is an unabashed example of musical genius as that was the first record & sound that Kate Bush created and produced herself as a *_teenager_* . But Meg's live performance that I saw, before this video came out post ST, immediately had me dive into Meg Myers music. I've been *_hooked_* ever since.
As a Kate Bush fan, this rendition and the video blew my mind. I had chills, my wife had chills, my 4 year old daughter LOVED IT. Magnificent. Thank you for your work! You have a new family of fans!
@James Williams , so wrong , yet so right. its amazing how kate bush is left off so many conversations about important women artists. yet she has a loyal following that holds her as more than sacred
Meg - I've been listening to this song for a couple of years and it has honestly pulled me through some of my darkest times. Thank you, and the rest of the artistic team, for creating this masterpiece. Much respect to Kate Bush for the original, but this is the version that grabs hold of my soul.
Like the gentleman before said, this is not "just" a cover. It's a tribute. It's simply incredible. Those eyes are hypnotic. Love the concept of the video and that they got the kids to color the slides. The way her wings close and open when she is dancing on the flower is amazing. They did a fantastic job on this video. Keep it up Meg!
I never would've heard this if it weren't for stranger things. Such an addicting and beautiful voice (i realize this is just a cover but i really like this version)
@@tvtubetelle I don't think so. she improved the Kate Bush original by being vocally more powerful, which is perfect for the song. nothing bad about improving an already great song.
I enjoyed it, people always say that a cover has to be remarkably different to the original but there isn't a written rule that it has to be. I love covers that remain true to the original whilst adding a little spice to alter the flavour ever so slightly and I love covers that throw out all the ingredients and start over fresh. I think this is a fantastic interpretation personally, it's her experience of the remarkable song and powerful lyrics with a contemporary contextualisation.
I really think if Kate were to see this, she would be so impressed and would love it. Not only for the work with the children and the unique and original concept, but by your ideas and full on enjoyment of what you were singing and doing. I loved you before but this just takes it over the top. :) You are awesome.
my brother passed away from cancer last June, i always listen to this song and feel so guilty. i think about swapping places. i wonder if i'd have the guts to actually do it. he was the strongest person i've ever known. i'd like to think i would swap places with him any day, he was so happy, he had a daughter and a wife, he had so much more to live for.
You would swap places because you love him so much, but his time was up and he had accomplished what he was set here to do and your journey still has things to be done. I can feel the pain in your comments but the love and happy memories of your brother will help soothe that pain in time.
This cover is so good, you could convince me that it was Meg Myer's original song. The depth, the rawness, the evocation of the emotions... It blows me away. It gives this song a whole new character. Amazing.
It doesn't give it anything new. Fantastic cover, amazing video, but it's very on the nose, more of a copy than a cover. Even the vocal intonations sounds similar.
With the original getting so much radio play now thanks to Stranger Things, I hope people don't forget how outstanding this cover is. Meg's voice is so rich, the instrumentation is so powerful, and even the video was made in such a lovely way. I honestly prefer this version.
In addition to this song being an absolute powerhouse, and this cover of it being arguably on par with the original, this is straight up one of the coolest and most brilliant music videos I've ever seen. I've never seen anything else in media that looks like this video and it's the fucking best.
it looks cool! that being said tho its not that different from a rotoscope music video imo which are also just neat and take a ton of effort to produce (as someone who used to rotoscope animate for funzies)
I am lucky enough to be 50 years old.... I remember hearing this back last century.... This is a moving song...the original was also an amazing version. This made me feel like I was a kid again ... But realizing I still am...
Some people say they prefer the original over this, but honestly I think this cover is way better than the original. It has so much more passion in it, more energy, more life.
This is art. Her rendition of the song, the production, the cinematography. It's all perfectly imperfect, and I feel it. I like music that makes me feel.
Just remember people, Kate Bush is the original *Singer, Songwriter & Producer* of this song, So thanks for maintain the original structure of this song, that's a great cover
I think everyone is forgetting Placebo’s cover of this song which is the version that received the most attention and brought the song to fame, at least for those of us who grew up in the second half of the 90’s to the early 2000’s. Placebo’s version has a melancholic darkness to it that has never lost its shine over the years. This version, whilst lighter, has a different style to it that remixes both the lighter aspects of Kate Bush’s original and some touches of the darker aspects of Placebo’s version, creating this kind of 80’s synth girl rock pop aesthetic that drives this version. I think Placebo and Meg Kelly’s versions are the best. Kate Bush’s original hasn’t aged as well as some might think whilst other covers have either not tried anything new or sound terrible. Placebo is good for the entire modern reworking of the song for a new generation whilst this version carries the spirit of Kate Bush with it but updates it considerably. Personally, I’d take this version as the Kate Bush original and Placebo’s as the cover, if you convert them through a modern mindset.
It’s impossible to overhype Kate Bush , one of the most influential musical talents of the 20th century. However you came to discover this song is valid . Most of us probably heard Placebo’s version in The O.C. . Now the people born since then get to discover it. Welcome welcome
At 2:33 some kid wrote “Fly to your destination!” While she’s flying through the flowers. So awesome. This may be one of the more unique ideas for a music video in a really long time. Plus this song AND the cover is straight 🔥
@James Williams , why does your answer to anything you disagree with have to be "gay". First of all, the word "gay" should not be used as an insult, it just shows you are a bigot against homosexuals. Second, you put no rationale behind your critique, so why should anyone take you or your opinion seriously?
She’s just coloured with skin tones for most of the video but there’s that odd time when she’s green or purple and I truly think that those children are what made this video come alive, as well as all the rest,
This video was the best thing I have ever seen in my life. Children has an amzing imagination in their drawings. And I feel children's talent in what they do is underrated. We should appreciate them more and appreciate the ones we love. Time is short. Spend it wisely.
I am listening to this song for the 1000th time and found your comment. I agree with you. Time is short, but if you spend it with those you love, it will always be enough.
She's the only one who meets, at the very least, the young Kate Bush who came out the gate with this self written & self produced masterpiece (as a teenager)...
It’s so beautiful; you can see the time and effort every kid put into their page and I wonder what it must feel like for them to see this video. Lovely just lovely
I can't stop coming back to Meg Myers incredible cover of Kate Bush's "Running up that Hill" video and song, so I've decided to write this review. It is intended for one who has already viewed the video. Bush's original song, and its creative and haunting video, have always been a gem of the 80's. Bush's soft voice conveys a sweet lonesome longing and pain like no other. The video's dancing is technically a wonder to see, but the abstract imagery toward the latter half has a dreamlike quality that conveys the obsessive thoughts about one person, seeing them everywhere. In Myers' rendition, the use of children's coloring for each frame, intentionally or not, creates a similar dreamlike or even psychedelic quality to the video. Musically, this version also includes something like Phil Spector's "wall of sound" technique, the fullness of which compliments the dreamlike visual. But this cute gimmick of the children's coloring, lovely though it is, can be a distraction and make it easy to overlook both the genius of this cover, and the amazing drama unfolding in the video. Myers' vocals take Bush's sweet solitary longing tones, and give them a sharper-edged strength of passion and ambition that turn the tone of the song from melancholy to the aspirational, and the events of the video back that up nicely. At first it may not be obvious what Myers' is doing or what her clothing patterns imply. It wasn't for me. But the inch-worming moves create enough mystique to peak interest. Even after she climbed the tree and encased herself I still hadn't caught on. But at just the proper peak in the music, Myers' conviction is overflowing in the way she sings "you won't be unhappy" and I had goosebumps when she emerged as a butterfly and all the previous moves suddenly made sense to me. Then we see the aspirational vocal and sound elements of her version of the song come to life on screen with the metaphor of remaking one's self. Here, the narrator seems less like someone caught in unrequited love, and more like someone making the case, "we can do this!" After flying about, the music begins to build again as Myers looks up at the stars. And, in a way not found in the original with such strength, the music shifts now to a final building of intensity and confidence as she thrusts her wings upward and soars into space - a hope defeating all logic and limitation. While Kate Bush will always be a national treasure and her original stands on its own, Myers may have done something with the song akin to when Jimi Hendrix made Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" a vehicle for his own voice - what a true cover is in its best form.
I remember FREAKING OUT when this vid came out. Meg you are one of my biggest inspirations as a visual artist, your art transcends music and this is a fantastic example of how

For sure. Way more emotion in her vocals than the original and just a way better overall mix/master.

It feels a lot like Kate Bush’s version is post-grief. Whereas they’d accepted the situation, this version feels raw. Denial, anger, bargaining… it’s all there.
this is like a revival song..
Great way to put it I agree 👍
Listen to the placebo cover from the 90s that one is real rawww

A few notes:
-Myers did an absolutely wonderful job capturing the underlying emotion of the original song; the frustration, the desperation, the fierceness of it all, it's just perfect.
I especially liked--
-Tom signing his name in great big letters on his page; he was very proud of his work!
-all the kids who drew epic space battles and astronauts and aliens in the wide shots
-the kids who drew fun backgrounds with the tree and grass and flowers--I saw some houses, some forest backgrounds, etc.
-the kids who filled their pages with colorful, abstract patterns, zigzags and swirls and stripes
-some kids added in special effects of their own, beams of color and magical light, I think I saw at least one add a cape to the superhero butterfly
-the kiddo who got the very last frame of the video, and I'm sure they learned it was the last picture and they were so excited to write a great big "THE END" as a send-off for us
I hope these kids got to see their work once it was all done!

The original is an unabashed example of musical genius as that was the first record & sound that Kate Bush created and produced herself as a *_teenager_* .
But Meg's live performance that I saw, before this video came out post ST, immediately had me dive into Meg Myers music. I've been *_hooked_* ever since.

Wait, so you're saying Kate Bush did a cover of this Meg Meyers song? ;)
@@shea_o_keith No she didnt said that ;)
I think everyone is forgetting Placebo’s cover of this song which is the version that received the most attention and brought the song to fame, at least for those of us who grew up in the second half of the 90’s to the early 2000’s.
Those who also loved this song even before the hype, you're people of culture ♥

yeah a lot of time and effort...
Here, the narrator seems less like someone caught in unrequited love, and more like someone making the case, "we can do this!"
After flying about, the music begins to build again as Myers looks up at the stars. And, in a way not found in the original with such strength, the music shifts now to a final building of intensity and confidence as she thrusts her wings upward and soars into space - a hope defeating all logic and limitation.
While Kate Bush will always be a national treasure and her original stands on its own, Myers may have done something with the song akin to when Jimi Hendrix made Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" a vehicle for his own voice - what a true cover is in its best form.
damn boy, you wrote this?? you should be a book critic.
