- Stephen Johnson goes through the necessary materials, tools and steps needed to tie a Saltwater baitfish classic, Enrico Puglisi's Peanut Butter. This fly can be tied in a myriad of color combinations to both match the shad in your local pond and stick out amongst the hundreds of baitfish you'll find on any given stretch of saltwater. This is a great fly to stock in your fresh and saltwater boxes. Don't miss out on this one!
ATTENTION!- After following these instruction and tying up some in black&purple for a 10 day trip to Big Pine Key with both guided and diy fishing. After meeting and fishing with my guide and longtime friend, he sadly told me those fly were too bulky and splash when landing and spook the tarpon we were targeting. the amount of material I wasted on 2 flies would have tied 2 dozen to match the profile needed.
Sorry to hear that, Gene. Proportions will certainly vary by location, always good to check with the guides at your destination for size/color recommendations. Hopefully the trip was successful regardless!
Sounds like you used too much material. The most common mistake.
LOL! Gene you tied a Mullet when it should of been a pinfish! Your flies would have worked just fine in dirty water such as the everglades. No worries you'll get the hang of it with practice. Pro tip - Each piece of material should be no thicker then the shank of the hook when the material is lightly stretched. EP flies are used successfully for almost every shallow water fish.
Nice!!
