  • UPDATE: I've got a new video with an even EASIER method of installing an SRT Kit! • #7: SRT Kit Easy Insta...
    Steve walks you through installing a Short Reset Trigger Kit (SRT) in a Sig Sauer P220, and shows the "before and after" difference using a P226 with the SRT kit already installed. UPDATE: At 17:24, I promised to come back later and discuss the sear pin re-assembly position... and forgot. The pin should be centered in the frame so that it's slightly recessed and not quite flush on BOTH sides of the frame (the pin is slightly shorter than the width of the frame). If you push in the sear pin too far from either side, you'll notice right away when you re-install the slide because the slide will hit the pin because it's sticking out a bit too far.

    As a Certified Sig Armorer I love going around and checking out these types of vids. Bro you have a natural gift for educational videos. I really like how you go over the things that can go wrong or fall out and say, "not to panic, it can go back in!"
    Great job staying in focus and great information. I just subscribed ;^)

    I have a German made 220 and the pistol would not decock with the old style decocking lever. There is a very slight difference in the height of the tab that contacts the sear on the new decocking lever. The new sear has a cut milled in the decocker side shoulder and the old lever isn't quite tall enough to lift the sear and decock the pistol. The old lever does slightly touch the new sear, and in some cases I suspect it may be enough to initiate a decock, thereby explaining why some folks don't end up having to use the new lever. It's a great video and I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into it.

    My kit arrived today from Midway USA. Genuine Sig Sauer parts.
    I disconnected the hammer spring because it felt like there was pressure on the sear pin.
    It installed with ease and the difference in the reset function is staggering. What an improvement. Hardly any take-up in the reset and the single action pull.
    Thanks for the video-it helped.

    Steve, thanks to you and another UA-cam channel, I was able to complete my own trigger upgrades and now have a sweet DA/SA trigger on my P229. You helped so much with the SRT install and the other channel showed me where to polish parts to smooth the pull out. I also replaced the hammer spring with a 19lb Wolff spring, just wish I had a tester like yours to see where the pull sits now. The toughest part was getting that dang hammer spring base to sit right. Thank you so much for making this video to help us keep costs down. Instead of spending $125 plus shipping both ways, I only spent $54 for the SRT kit and the hammer spring and have a trigger I totally love. Thanks again.

    Steve, thanks so much for taking the time to make this incredibly detailed video. It made the installation a lot easier, and definitely more fun. I did the upgrade on a new P220 Elite that I bought this past spring, which already had the new and improved de-cocker. I still opted to put on the one that came with the kit. After struggling to get the new sear in place, I dug out a very handy tool that I forgot I had--a set of long, precision lighted tweezers that I bought at Lowe's. I got the sear in position in a few seconds. Once the gun was completely reassembled, the results were even better than I expected. In single action mode, the reset distance had been reduced by at least half! There was no play in the trigger whatsoever. I don't have the device to measure the weight of the pull, but because of the success of the install, it's a moot point. I can't wait to take it to the range. The excellent quality of this video made it a godsend for me. Thanks again!

    Steve, I used your video to install an SRT kit in my 87 p220. With your help, it was very easy and had no hiccups. I did find that the new decocker would make contact and the old one never did, so I stayed with the original. Very informative and easy to follow! Thank You!!

    Steve- Thanks for the tutorial on all of this. FYI for others with a P220 SAO. The safety lever needed is different than the "key piece
    that comes in that kit you use. I have both a P220 .45 ACP and 10 mm. Both are SAO. the 45 came with SRT kit and straight trigger from factory. The 10 mm came with std sear and safety lever. I took the 45 apart to see the differences.
    There are 2 parts that look to be different
    1) already state the safety lever, a forum I go to says it is p/n 1202088-R
    2) the trigger bar also appears to be different as well. Having a tough time finding p/n on this one. I do have a guess but don't want to add this one until I confirm its the right one. Sig Sauer site shows parts break down for a DA/SA but not the SAO. This adds to the difficulty in part number searching.
    *)Last thing. I found that putting that SAO specfic safety level back in first but with SRT sear very close by in the frame was easier to get it in place. I found if i put sear in first that the lower little lip on the safety lever made it hard to insert. After switching the order, it was much easier.
    Thanks for all of your videos.

    I put this in my two tone P220. I didn't want to use the black decocker, so kept my silver one. The decocker would not work as the geometry on it is wrong for the new parts. Black one in, works like a charm! Also the new black decocker has clearance problems with my Hogue grips, so I had to "modify" them till my new grips get in. Thanks for the video!

    Hello Steve wanted to tank you for this video just did the SRT kit on mi 1982 Weste German P220 just followed you video and got it right on. Im not and armorer I can work some with guns, motorcycles and car si it was a challenge but with you explanation it was a walk in the part. It works perfectly on my old P220 with the older hammer style and trigger spring with mag release on the bottom. Great job keep it up!

    Love your videos and decided to get he 220 Kit for my P226 just so I could get the decocking lever to avoid continuous finish/frame damage from a decock snap. Bought the whole kit vs. just the lever and... FAIL. There are many geometric differences between the 220 and 226 lever. The hump is one but there are many more. The overall height distance between the pivot hole and the top edge of the lever results in the piece not even being seatable to the frame. Even if it could, the tab that extends into the pistol is shorter and will not likely engage the 226 hammer release, it is also a bit higher in position. In addition to this, differences that would not likely impact function exist. The control itself is a different shape being larger and extrudes from the frame a tad more. The "hook" is also shaped differently. Recommend you annotate that part on your video so others don't make the investment on a 220 decocker to avoid frame wear/damage like I did.

    A great instructional video how ever when explaining the trigger bar I was really confused (not hard to do) in trying to get the trigger bar over the srt plug it looked like one had to pry the trigger bar up and over the srt plug but after hours of working with it I finally figured it out and by going by your rule (do not force) I just went ahead and reassembled and it worked, and I must say by far this is the best video on this subject I have watched. Keep up the good work.

    Great video, thanks. Small PSA for those who view the comments here; I tried installing this kit on a brand new 220 Combat, and found that the original sear trip protrusion (it's on the safety lever on the original, rather than on the sear, as with the new kit) engaged with the trigger bar well, but the SRT sear trip protrusion is just a bit shorter than the original, and it doesn't reliably engage. The thing is, it works fine without a magazine installed, but with a magazine present, typically the sear won't trip, as the bar slides past it. Talked to SIG and they indicated it should work; I'll need to send it in to figure out why the SRT sear doesn't work in mine.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  8 років тому +1

      Sorry to hear that, Allan. Please update us as to what you find! It SHOULD work just fine on a 220 Combat.

    • @sneezingfrog
      @sneezingfrog 8 років тому

      Yep, that's what SIG CS said. My suspicion is that the trigger bar, being a stamped part, is perhaps just a bit out of normal spec on mine -- not so much that the factory parts don't work, but just enough so that the shorter trip protrusion on the SRT doesn't quite make enough contact.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  8 років тому

      Then if that's the case, I'd guess your gun will come back with a new trigger bar. :)

    I will be installing a SRT in a new P229 soon and I think this will be helpful. On reading the trigger pull gauge, ounces are not tenths e.g. 4# 7.6 oz. is not 4.7 as stated in the audio, and 3# 13.9 oz is not 3.13.

    • @RokRunner1
      @RokRunner1 8 років тому

      Good catch. To get a decimal value, one needs to divide the ounces by 16. So 4# 7.7 oz is 4.5 #s rounding up to the tenths place.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  9 років тому +2

      Hi, John. Darn it... you're absolutely right! I meant to come back and show that you should push the pin through so that it's centered and not quite flush on both sides of the frame (the pin is slightly shorter than the width of the frame). If you push it in too far from either side, you'll notice right away when you re-install the slide and catch the slide on the pin because it's sticking out a bit too far.
      If you watch that portion of the video (at 17:22) you'll notice that when I press the pin into place, I use the fleshy part of my thumb to press it in from the left side -- and I press hard enough so that some skin from my thumb can enter the hole and press the pin slightly deeper than the outside edge of the frame (which results in the other end of the pin also being also just barely inside the frame). Sorry for not doing back and discussing it in the video, but I'll go add an annotation now to come check these comments. :) Thanks for catching that!

    You speak and move a little bit too fast, but other than that this was a good video.
    I have an older SIG P220, from approximately the mid-90s, and made in West Germany.
    I installed a Grayguns SRT kit, which does not come with the new style decocker.
    I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it, but after installing the parts and testing the decocker and the trigger reset before reassembling the firearm, I reassembled the firearm and the decocker would not function.
    It quickly became obvious that it just was not traveling far enough and that was because it was hitting the grip just prior to functioning.
    So I just had to take a file and shave down a little bit of that grip area to allow the decocker level to travel maybe a 16th of an inch further, if even that.
    After that everything functions flawlessly.

    Great video. Have a question. Got an SRT kit for my P220, but I'm also getting some Hogue rubber grips. Some added text info in the vid says that the included new decocker does not fit right with the Hogue grips. Can the SRT kit still work as intended with the original P220's decocker? Thanks.

      @SteveJenkins  9 років тому

      Thanks, Fugettaboutit. Yes - the Hogue wrap-around grips interfere with the new decocker. However, it shouldn't be too much trouble to use a razor blade or utility knife to gently whittle down a little bit of the rubber in the "track" where the decocker fits, and I'm sure it will be fine. I switched plans and went for the E2 grips, which worked fine. But if you love the Hogues, I'm confident you can make it work without much effort. Lemme know how it goes!

      Steve Jenkins Thanks much. I have the E2's and like them, but would just prefer a little wider backstrap, so I'm truing the Hogues. Is there something specific about the included decocker that only works with the SRT?
      Edit: Just checked…the Decocker that came the gun is the exact same one that's included in the SRT kit, so either way I may have some contouring to do on the Hogues. Thanks again.

      Steve Jenkins Ok, so just installed it (took all of five minutes…having some magnets handy definitely helps). Not only is the reset nicer, but that little extra 'hitch' in the single-action take-up as the lever lifts the firing pin safety plunger is gone too! Night and day better.
      Add that to an 18-lb mainspring, and this P220 is super-smooth now! Can't wait to run some rounds through it, but even dry-firing I can tell that I'm staying on target better…even in double-action. Great instructions.

    Nice video! Very helpful. One question tho, when I test the DA/SA on my 226, the slide locks when I rack it back for the reset. Any reason why that is?

    Hey, do you know if the SRT kit will work in a P220 SAO? I have a 220 Match (not Super Match, although, I don't know the difference between the two!) SAO that has about 3/8" reset. I would like to bring it more into the range of my DA/SA SRT pistols.
    Thanks!!

    I looked at the video and have done 2 installations on the SRT ( P229 and P239). My uncle is going to do his but lives 2 states away so I won't be able to do his. I sent him the link to your video but have to ask a question. I looked at your video a few times and correct me if I am wrong but I think you forgot to put the ejector back in?

    Steve, is that decocker with a hump from the 220 SRT Kit sold separately? My P226 Navy is already wearing the SRT kit but would love to change out the decocker as I already have a small chip on the frame.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  9 років тому

      Hi, ybrik5. I'm sure you can get that "humped" decocker from Sig, or from anywhere Sig parts are sold. I don't know the separate part number for it outside of the kit, however. Note that the humped one won't work with some aftermarket grips, so that that into account and make sure you test it properly after installation.

    Job well done! Where can you get the SRT Kit for $20-$30? Every site seems to be selling for $50-$60. Also seems very hard to come by.

      TrickMasterPC I think the prices have gone up a bit, but best prices are usually on MidwayUSA or TopGunSupply.

    Safe to pull trigger without the slide? Frame is aluminum and when hammer hits it, it might crack.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  9 років тому

      Hi, ybrik5. Great question. You're right that frame is aluminum, but the striking surface of the hammer never makes contact with the frame, so there's no risk of it cracking when pulling the trigger. Testing like this (while you still have full access to the internals before putting the grips back on) is totally safe! :)

    the sear pin on my P229 was very hard to take out and put back in. I tried both sides and they were both very hard. Had to use a rubber mallet and an Allen wrench (was using that to push it out) to get it back in. Is this normal?

    Steve, Thanks for the awesome video. I was able to install my SRT on my sig no problem with your instructions. I have a question though. I am 99% positive that I have installed the kit correctly, but I still get about 1/4 inch or play on my trigger. I have a P220 Equinox, I was thinking maybe it's because it's the Equinox that it's not working the way it should, or maybe I did something wrong ? Anyhow I was hoping you may have some ideas that may help ?It would be greatly appreciated.

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  8 років тому

      Hi, +Jeff Lee. It will be different with different guns and trigger combos. I wouldn't worry. 1/4 inch is probably not outside the "normal" range. Mine has a slight amount of movement (probably a bit less than 1/4 inch), but movement nonetheless. It's still a large improvement over the original.:) Go shoot that sweet P220! :)

    You don't void your warranty by installing the kit yourself. You only void the warranty on damages to your gun that result from improperly installing it.

    Hello Steve and SevenSixTwoNato,
    I just ordered my SRT kit Sig Sauer License parts so how would the warranty be voided someone please explain...

    • @SteveJenkins
      @SteveJenkins  9 років тому

      ThaJack The "official" stance from Sig is that if someone other than a Sig Sauer armorer performs this work, the gun's warranty is void. Whether or not they will enforce that is another matter.

      I don't. The decocker spring doesn't affect trigger actuation at all.
