I understand why “the satan” is a descriptor, meaning “the accuser/adversary” and it does not specify a particular individual: Satan. Got it. What isn’t clear is why it COULD NOT refer to “Satan, the adversary.” Jesus is “the redeemer” (as are other individuals, in different contexts) but we don’t preclude ‘the redeemer’ from being identified as “Jesus, the redeemer”, if the context fits. I am absolutely not a Hebrew linguist, just trying to understand the logic. Love your work, DrH!
Satan (accuser) is a title, not a name. Lucifer is the name that God gave him. In his rebellion, he rejected everything from God and about God, including his own name. He no longer identifies himself by the name Lucifer.
No. God did not give him the name Lucifer. Jerome did when he translated the Hebrew bible into Latin. He should have translated it morning star but he preferred a close Latin name Lucifer.
There is no Lucifer in the Bible. That name is Latin meaning Lightbringer; the word mistranslated is Morningstar which is in real life the planet Venus often seen as a small dot of light close to the Sun hence 'morning-star'. Again though, the naming of Morningstar is _not_ exclusive to a single entity as multiple are called 'morningstar' within the Bible. Back to the original post, The Satan is like a prosecutor in a court room; think Perry Mason if you want. He's not the bad guy in the Biblical text, he's the bad guy to the defendant, to Job. However, satan means adversary or enemy thus anyone or any group could potentially be called satan. As well as the Dragon in Revelation who is referred to as satan and devil (or enemy and slanderer). Remember: Christianity and Judaism are not the same as popular, media translated Christianity or something more akin to Zoroastrianism; there is no Ultimate Evil; there is no good god _and_ bad god. It is just God. As for signs of sin and evil, there are rebels and many of them but they are very few in the grand scheme. Look to God and the followers of Jesus, and not the words of slanderers who twist what the good book says.
More food for thought... Azâzêl is the only proper name given for a “fallen angel” in the Bible. In Leviticus 16:8-10, the sins of the people, and the associated guilt, are laid onto a “scapegoat,” who is then sent out into the wilderness, to someone called Azâzêl. He is mentioned three times (but omitted in some English translations of the Bible]. The Ethiopian Bible, purportedly the oldest Bible in the world, identifies, in 1 Enoch 6-8, the proper names of twenty Fallen Angels. Azâzêl is identified as one of the leaders. He taught humans how to make armor and weaponry (1 Enoch 8:1)
I love that you take the time and energy to liberate my mind from so many theological shortfalls. I've been of a certain boastful organization for 30 years and as of the last 6 have been reeducating and strengthening truth in rightly deviding His Word Thank you so much understanding indeed I am thankful and humbled God Bless
I'm very thankful to God for leading me to your study series. I like the way you teach. You explain things very well and its not over my head. Also, I want to pray for you right now. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for using Michael to teach your holy word in a way that is understandable. Lord, you are the divine healer and I ask in Jesus' Holy Name for the cancer that is in Michael's body to be removed and never to return. I believe the prayer of the saints is powerful and there are many that have lifted him up in prayer to you. I believe you havent completed the work in him and he still has many people to touch for your glory and for your kingdom. I'm asking this in Jesus Holy name, Amen.
This is an important story and we should always strive to prove that God was right to put His trust in us. Follow Jesus' teaching and let's fail the Satan!
You and the Bible Project pages are such a breath of fresh air. Many Christians are so negative and fear based. I love your positivity which I believe is a reflection of God. Bless you
I look forward to anything you post Dr. Heiser. > I love love love gaining this amazing understanding. AS I reread my Bible I understand so much more. And I completely realize why Chuck Missler taught us to never overlook even the smallest detail. It was put there by Devine design.
Dr. Heiser was a well known biblical scholar. He’s leaving out tons of context from what he’s talking about. There are a lot of his seminars where he explains this is great detail. He dissects old Greek language, Hebrew- he studied in part at a Hebrew university- the man was quite knowledgeable… a doctor in biblical studies. He knows what he’s talking about.

Rev 12:10..."the accuser of our brethren is cast down,..." from Rev 12:9 that old serpent called the Devil and Satan. Just sayin...... the Whole Bible approach works pretty good.
It goes even deeper than that: when Satan took dominion of the earth from Adam and Eve, the world essentially came under Satan's jurisdiction since it was now his world. And thus, if somebody sinned, Satan would go "Ha! You have sinned! You broke the rules! Now you will suffer the consequences!" Satan's position as god of this world gives him authority to be judging and accusing mankind. Of course, Satan loses this authority and his position as god of this world in Revelation 12.
@@johngregory4801 But even before that, Satan's worst mistake was in using a lie in order to take dominion of the world. Satan's entire kingdom is built upon that one lie he told Eve in the Garden. Since Satan used deception to take the world for himself, it must one day be returned to mankind, according to God's unavoidable spiritual laws, which makes sure that everything which was stolen is eventually returned (this ties into the Sabbath and the Jewish Jubilee). God's law ensures that every lie throughout history is eventually exposed, and in doing so, Satan's kingdom will collapse from within. In short, only that which is built upon the foundation of God will stand throughout eternity. Everything not built upon the foundation of God will crumble out of inevitability.

@Isaac Quesenberry. Why would God need or want to prove Himself to an underling? If you can find “Why God” by Dr. Jim Tarter, it will change your understanding of Job. Basically, God corrects a flaw in Job, his extreme fear, which is the beginning of wisdom but not its fulfillment, to reveal His trustworthy and loving nature. At the end Job finally understands the true nature of God, stops cringing and starts living as a loved child of God.
@@ea-tr1jh the Book of Job is the answer to "why does God allow suffering". The Devil challenged him, as described in the video, its also a challenge to God's right to rule.
English language definitely will tolerate the use of "The Karen". The Satan was probably just the male version that kept asking to speak to the manager when he got to heaven.
What a powerful perspective. To say there is so much going on behind the scenes is a understatement. Rest in Peace Dr Heiser and thanks for the work you have done for our Father
If you are coming at this from a purely Jewish perspective then okay. However, from a Christian perspective there is this. And the great dragon was cast out, that old SERPENT, called the DEVIL, and SATAN, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the ACCUSER of our brethren is cast down, which ACCUSED them BEFORE OUR GOD day and night.
What you say may be true, but Dr. Heiser was discussing what is said in the Hebrew Bible. The Christian Bible disagrees with the Hebrew Bible in many important places.
The Satan sounds more like an indicitive character rather than an office. The Author of Job seems to be calling out a particular being rather than stating an office. You see if it were simply an office why use the definite article? We know from other passages that there are other satans; there is more than one adversary. If the Book of Job were merely pointing out an office wouldn't the author simply use an indefinite article; i.e. "a satan". Consider Paul's letter to the Thessalonians when he speaks of Christ's return Paul mentions "the archangel". Now archangel is indeed an office; protestants in particular miss that the Septuagint uses "archai angelous" in place of "chief princes" (
These were my thoughts exactly (minus a lot of your greek knowledge). It would seem that using the definite article for the office of satan would imply that there is only one being filling it at a time, as well. If this was referring to some other satan, then it seems more natural to use the indefinite article.
Agreed! It seems that too much enphasis was given to this character to be just a random demon or job (as in position) keeper that points the finger to people. My limited understanding is that this is indeed the devil. If I'm correct, doesn't Satan has access to God? Wouldn't it be strange if some randon demon shows up in front of God to dialogue with him and confront him on his word?
@@HEART2HEART-3 There is one satan, THE adversary. Jesus is also a title, meaning the anointed one. There is one anointed one, Jesus and one archangel, the Chief of the angels, Michael, which is a title meaning He who is like God. Meaning Jesus.

Village idiot, the fool, the devil's advocate...all in play to challenge the narrative to substantiate the truth. For we have all been lied to, and yet have been given the truth. But mysteries remain and faith is required. In the end, only the truth remains. Check every spirit, ask the questions. Seek the answers. Our faith is not blind nor in vain.. " Come, reason with Me" , sayeth The Almighty.
It's a terrible insult and a poor analogy. The village idiot wasn't an idiot, they were an entertainer, a jester, a jokester, they were the class clown of the village, not the glue eater in the corner.
However, in English we do use articles to separate commoners from the important. The Satan can be meant as the supreme accuser, the one known as the Accuser. Like in narrative stories, like the Director, the Producer, etc., which is how Job is written. Its more a narrative than a documentary, still real. But the rest of the Doctor's explanation here is great.
So do you believe that it is the same figure from Genesis 3? Because I do. I'm not really convinced of this personal vs. office arguement. Seems to me the entity accusing in Job is more of a person than an office.
Thank you, Michael! Your contributions to the understanding of these truths for all of us are so important and appreciated. I first discovered you back in the Watcher Website and Roswell meetings days and have enjoyed your insights ever since.

RAD MAN I guess I’m asking a dumb question. If God is the creator of literally everything, then he created the paradigm good/evil. Why even give humans and angels free will if he knew they would sin? He knew that would be the cause of soooo much pain and suffering. And he continues to let it happen. And the Bible is all we have for proof of his existence. There's a fair bit of reading between the lines here; the book of Job says nothing of satan ""crossing a line". The text is very matter of fact, and just states the dialogue between satan and God. Rather than crossing a line, Satan could just be doing his job, offering a counter-argument (Devil's advocate, if you will). Speaking of his job, there is no place in Job that tells us what his job is; he was "walking to and fro on the earth" but, once again, to say he was there to see if people were living righteously is reading between the lines, and certainly not something to state as fact.
For anyone reading this, mind you this - he is being specific about the old testament, which is as far as the Hebrew Bible goes, the New Testament is all about God fulfilling the prophecies of the Old Testament. I pray that we continually dive deep into God's word.
I have a translation that, when God asked where the Satan has been, the Satan replied, "Roaming and patroling the Earth." Whether it is accurate or not, I like it.
@@vernonbrandt8719 especially because he's trying to strip this all down to what's actually being said in isolation in its context... and that involved a kind of mental iconoclastic purge... tearing down lore, tradition and imagination in favor of "what exactly is being said and to whom in what context." It's a destructive process and has lead many to abandon faith as it's easier to break down than build back up. But if you're going to authoritatively say "I put the time in, I'm an expert, and it's saying x" it's better to say only what you know for sure and not what you don't. I think I disagree with him here, but this is also a narrow slice and I can't help but feel it's not a complete thought.

Technically his name is Lucifer. But let me digress, this excerpt seems to be more for Apologetics when it comes to Atheists dissecting and attacking certain things, i.e. "there is no devil" as was pointed out as an argument they make, it is important to accurately represent the faith when it comes to the subject of Apologetics. After reading this in your books, I've wondered if Satan did not get demoted to the accuser/adversary position after losing his throne guardian role...
There was no challenge - because the Most High knew THE accuser would accuse. The Most High used ha'satan, like a tool, to teach Job (and those who understand) the value of trusting the Father in Heaven.
You're not adding anything to what has already been said. You're only confusing the message and actually completely getting backwards. Although one of the points is to teach people to trust in God no matter what happens, it's important to not distort ANY part of the bible. By saying Job was being taught actually goes against God's position. God's position was that Job ALREADY knew to trust in God despite anything that would happen to him. You actually put yourself in position of "the satan" by saying Job needed to be taught this lesson. I'm not trying to have a "gotcha" moment. An interesting point; however, who else but Satan himself would be so foolish as to question God's knowledge or omniscience? See also, "the Batman."
... or referring to the "preacher" when the context implies a specific preacher referred to. The phrase "in the name of" connotes much more than a title used in direct address. So "satan' or adversary as dude teaches implies much more than some tattletale spirit. Even he at the end slips up and identifies Satan because the thrust of the passage so strongly implies that's who we're dealing with it pretty much demands we call out Satan by name. I'm sure there is an old figure of speech (ala metonymy or synecdoche) which explains this type of indirect reference, though I'm not so skilled in the figures to call it by name. In short, I agree with you.
You're argument would be accurate if anything in the Hebrew said "the" before LORD, but it doesnt. The Hebrew reads YHVH. Most commonly now pronounced Yahweh/Jehovah. And it never calls him THE Yahweh. The use of the term LORD was a Jewish pharisaical concoction so as not to break 10 commandment number #3. Lord, not being in caps is not the same Hebrew word and is not a name anyways, it's a title just as accuser, so that argument wouldnt work either. I too believe he was cast out after Jesus ascended to heaven. But I do not believe it was immediate. I believe, like the scriptures say, there was a war in heaven and angels literally fought. The question then needs to be asked, is that war over? And if it is when was the great dragon cast out? I have a theory. In history there is a year that is called, “The worst year in history” and “The year of the never ending winter”. And no, 2020 is close to being the worse year in history lol. Something happened either in 535 or the beginning of 536 that caused basically what looked like a nuclear winter ❄️ for a whole year all over the world. Scientists still don’t know what happened, they have a lot of guesses, from volcanic activity to meteors. But they really have no clue. What they do know from old manuscripts from around the world is that the sun was blocked out for around a year by a very thick haze, crops died, there was starvation and plagues all around the world and untold millions died. I believe this is the time the great dragon was cast out. Shortly after this, in 570AD, Muhammad was born. After the great dragon was cast out, in most translations of the Bible, it says he stood on the sand of the sea and a great beast rose up out of the sea. The sea represents people, the beast represents a kingdom. And it had “a blasphemous name” on its heads. I contend that this kingdom that the dragon gave his power to was Islam. And the head that was wounded by the sword, the Ottoman Empire. The president of Turkey wants to resurrect the Ottoman Empire and become the new sultan. If this happens this will be the head of the beast that was healed. So, the war has happened and satan has been here doing his work and we are close to the end of the age.
@José Riquelme yes biblically you are correct. The 4 falls of Satan are mentioned and are as follows - his role as cherub to adversary - him losing access to heaven and sent to earth -him being chained for 1,000 years in the bottomless pit -bottomless pit to lake of fire 🔥

Well...from what Mike teaches. The lesser “gods” and Elohim, God also created with free will. And Mike explained that it wasn’t just proving Himself to this one but all the others witnessing as well.
Revelation 15:3-4 [3]And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints. [4]Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest. The answer to that lies in a worship based in free will, rather than force. A satanic being is one that is selfishly uncaring of what others think. Even among men we call such people dictators, psychopaths, sociopaths. And we despise them. How much worse an all-powerful God with the same deficiency of character? We worship God not simply because He is all-powerful, but because He is all-loving, as exemplified by His caring enough about us to prove that He, and His judgements can be trusted. Only in this way could we ever believe He has our best interests at heart, because, unlike Him, we are NOT all-knowing. That He would even bother to care makes Him, indeed, THE GOD of gods.
We know of this also - im Muslim we call him Shaytan but we know that's not his name- we know it as a Chair that has specific characteristics and powers (anyone can sit in this chair)
Does that mean that in the many places where God or Lord is mention and is prefaced by the Hebrew word "ha" we are talking about an office, not the name of God?
God or Lord is not prefixed with "ha" (the letter hey). It most often is the opposite, despite when it says "The Lord" in English. The name, in Hebrew, spelled, yod-hey-vav-hey (often called the tetragrammaton, Strongs H3068), pronounced by some Yahweh or Yahuah, is the name of the one true God of the Bible. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The English translations downgrade His actual name to a generic title or "job description" God or Lord. His name is not "THE LORD", contrary to English versions of Jeremiah 16:21. In some places, the word God is substituted for the Hebrew word elohim (Strongs H430). This word has multifaceted uses. It can refer to Yahweh, or to "little g gods". It seems to be more of a description of a particular office like the word god, instead of a substitution for an actual name. I hope this explanation blesses you with understanding and encourages you to learn more about who the adversary is (are) versus who Yahweh is. God does have an actual name you can call upon and it is a name worthy of praise.
Not heresy, but still false teaching. Revelation 12:9-10 "9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, *called the Devil, and Satan* , which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, *which accused them before our God day and night* ."

Dr. Heiser lost me when he said "...that's his job." LOL. He makes it sound like 'the' Satan is an employee. Only one who sought the very office of God Himself would dare speak to the Most High in such a manner. The personality in the book of Job is not some off the wall ne'er do well who just happened to show up at the meeting. Yes, he is The Accuser, who is Satan....the Satan...or whatever else you wish to call him. Festus was wrong about Paul in Acts 26:24, but the words are quite accurate when laid at the feet of Dr. Heiser. "Much learning has made you insane." It would be wise for Dr. Heiser to return to the simplicity that is in Christ, before he goes so deep there will be no rescuing him.
Are you saying, then, the Hebrew in the Logos software is spelling 'hasatan' incorrectly? (If so, the Logos people need to know.) That spelling and the grammatical indefinite-article rule is what Heiser is working from. That being said, Heiser's conclusion leaves open the 'satan' being old Lucifer himself, though yes, the text seems to be unclear on its face. I know we have all interpreted 'satan' as being *the* Devil, but what element is Heiser missing from here he needs to get ahold of other than 'tradition'?
I agree about the simplicity of Christ... Paul preached 1 Gospel... people get to deep in knowledge or love of prophicy to the extent they forget the Great commission.
@@nobunkbibleprophecy4273 Thanks for the reply. What I am saying is that it doesn't matter in the big scheme of the story or in the entire Biblical narrative of redemption. Evil challenged and evil lost in the end. In fact, evil...as it turned out and will turn out...never had a chance of victory. Heiser is dangerous to the lesser learned in that he focuses on things that are not fundamental to the faith, which then can be used by 'the' Satan to sow doubt as to the authenticity of scripture as a whole. In reality, I do not think Heiser believes in the Bible as THE word of God, and is desperately trying to convince himself, as well as others (misery loves company) that the veracity of scripture is suspect. He should be avoided.
@Robert Coward, I would encourage you to preface your statement with "In my opinion." Do you celebrate Christmas? Not one single scripture in the dozen or so Bibles that I have ever read instructs people celebrate the birth of the Christ. The oldest Bible is 400 years old. Christmas is pagan whether people want to admit it or not. Research it. Truth or man-made traditions? If you've had a vaccine you have participated in a blood ceremony. Vaccines contain Senomyx which is aborted fetal tissue. Never forget that's while one is pointing their finger at an individual, three of your own are pointing back at you. Remove the plank from your own eye.
@@robertcoward9923 I agree with u. Much of the Bible has been correctly understood but even so, it seems that Heiser wants to indulge in re-interpretating what is already known, simply because he thinks he will discover some other meaning to what we have understood all along. It would have been fine if his different understanding was edifying spiritually but saying that the Accuser is just doing his divine duty gives the appearance of removing the devil from his evil and makes God look like someone who enjoys indulging Satan's accusations.
I believe Satan is an improper name much like "I Am" or "Alpha and Omega". Its a description, not a proper name like Sara, Mark, etc. I know I am probably reiterating what has been said in the video. Good job. I agree with your points.
What exactly WAS his point... that we have an accuser whose name is NOT Satan -- SO WHAT??? How does that advance the gospel for help the believer understand that we HAVE an accuser and we need to be aware and cling to God and His way????
Heiser points out in other videos that the term "ha satan" (adversary / accuser) began to be used in the Second Temple period (well after Job was written) as a description for that unnamed first rebel from Genesis 3, Isaiah 14, and Ezekiel 23 in exactly the way you are describing. It seems that prior to that "ha satan" was distinct from the serpent / fallen cherubim (the figure we typically think of as Satan), and it wasn't until later that someone went "Well, that original fallen being would have been an adversary, wouldn't he? Let's use the title 'Satan' for him." Same goes for "Devil" (greek "Diabolos" - literally "slanderer") and the "Satan" in the NT (greek "Satanus" is just taken straight from the Hebrew). All of these - including things like "Lucifer" (morning star), the dragon, and the serpent - are all just titles. They are, like you said, improper names. There is a consistent theme of some kind of cosmic rebel, but this being is never given the "dignity" of a proper name. The main point is just that all of these developments happened waaaay after Job could have been written, so it is unlikely that the divine council meeting at the beginning of Job is referencing any of that. The rebel from Eden was cast out of the council well before the story took place, so it is very unlikely they are the same being.
When satan is a title of a being then this satan mentioned can still be talking about that rebel from Genesis, or not? And in time a title can become a personal name: like we have Saint Nikolaas became Sinterklaas --> Santa Claes....
It's not like satan gave himself this name, his name is supposed to be descriptive is it not? So yes, I think it can be used as a name and description of said being. You have many deceivers but he is THE deceiver/accuser, the original.
If satan is the title of an office, aka "the accuser" there must be a name of the person who holds that office. Personally I believe that using the adjective before the word satan is giving us the name Satan. Compare with John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." Before each time we read "Word" there is the adjective "the" or "ho" in the Greek, letting us know that the Word was the name, not just the office. The first mention of "God" in this verse has no "the" preceding it, and yet it does have the Greek word "ho." So we see this adjective being used to tell us God is a name. The second time "God" is used the Greek word "ho" is absent, yet the grammar makes it clear that this is The God. (verse 3 tells us He is the creator as well). I find it difficult to say that using the adjective before the word does little more than state an office. I likewise have difficult with his original name being Lucifer. That's mentioned only in Isaiah 14:12 and has to do with the fall of Babylon. Read the whole of chapter 14.
Rebellio Cross, I was thinking the same thing. No name is given to the serpent so I don't see how putting "the" in front of satan keeps them from being the same being. The serpent The devil The satan The dragon
@@gerrydean7696 Even God Himself, at times, is "haw shawtawn." It simply means "to be in opposition". Not a name. An Accuser is one who opposes the one accused. God was often in opposition to the idolatry of man. ~Steven of Montreal
I followed your exegesis of the 'sons of God' with excitement but this teaching is hard to swallow. If the satan of Job is not the "Devil and Satan" of Revelation who is also called 'the accuser of our brethren', and if you say that being an 'accuser' is merely a divine office, then why is the devil's being an accuser mentioned AGAINST him in Revelation right when he is cast down from heaven? Why is there rejoicing in heaven when 'the accuser of our brethren' is cast out? Also, what about this verse - "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee." (Jude 1:9) This verse seems to imply that even an archangel such as Michael refused to turn into an 'accuser', even when his accusation wud have been justified against a being such as the devil. It would also seem that Michael by saying "the LORD rebuke thee" understands that it is God alone who is entitled to accuse/ rebuke anyone and the devil in being an 'accuser' has usurped this role of God.
I was expecting something different from you judging by the beginning of your text. A moral argument about how disgusting was God when allowing satan to test Job...
Book of Daniel and others give the answer. Helel, or Lucifer in Latin, was the anointed cherub who covered the throne of God, and was considered the wisest and most beautiful of them all. Then he went insane from pride and jealousy, seeing himself as so great that he believed he was as God, so he tried to usurp God by challenging Him with an army of his own angels whom he'd convinced of his beliefs. Helel and all his fallen angels were cast out, and Helel took the form of the serpent to decive Eve (and we all know how that went). However, Helel's job is not finished. He is prince and ruler of this world, so he is permitted to reenter Heaven to meet with the Most High's courts as a wittness to accuse mankind. The vision of his defeat by the hand of Michael is a prophecy of future events. Helel will be banished from the courts and banned from ever reentering Heaven again, and thus will begin Daniel's 70th week. So it is very likely that the individual in Job is still the same entity.
Thank you for your sincere approach as this really provokes my thoughts and it really makes more sense to me after you explain the situation. So is the devil's title is "The Satan Office"? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Not entirely true. Job actually was a sinner in the sense as of not doing everything correctly. God knew this and wanted Job to increase his understanding and so change. Hence God asked Satan if he knew of Job as to make Satan do the task needed to get Job to change. Because the end result was this: Job 42:5-6 My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you. Therefore I despise myself and repent in dust and ashes. Job spoke truth about God that it wasn't because of any evil stuff Job had done that he was suffering. It was for 1) increase his knowledge in doing even more good. Because we read: [Job 42:15b] after Job repented, he also gave his daughters an inheritance, just as his sons. 2) Get Jobs friends to learn more about God and so humble themselves. It was never a gamble where God needed to prove Himself for an angel.
Dear Dr. Heiser this is maybe a bit personal question but I was wondering that with all your life long research, study and academic understanding of the word of God, has it brought you closer to God in spirit? If so, I'm very happy for you. You in your work do appear to have respect for the Biblical integrity, which I also respect. Sometimes translations can give a different point of view to a conclusion such as the topic of a firmament compared to an expanse. Thank you for your work and much love.
@@HangrySaturn That has nothing to do with this subject though. It extremely obvious that Satan is real. God defines him, Jesus defines him when He is tempted by him 3 times, and Revelation defines him as multiple a personality being as Satan, the devil of old, the serpent, and the dragon. He personifies all of these things just like the rest of the higher angels have multiple tasks from God.
@@spirit_mechanicof course he is real and not only. I guess, i asume only, that the devil seduced eve and placed his seed in her. Also i guess cain was the seed of the devil. Elohim (God) Created Lucifer ( Cherubim) Elohim makes Lucifer the highest ranking Angel, makes him the most beautiful, gives him great power and gives him one of the highest positions he can give a angel Covering Cherubim. Elohim gives Job a (human) everything wealth, Land, Children, wife. The Human gets striped of all his worldly possessions but at the end Job never loses his love for Elohim. Satan was giving everything in the Universe and he rebelled against Elohim. After a read this story many times I came to the same conclusion as everyone else comes to. When the Holy Spirit reveals something to you thats when he wants you to see what’s behind the actual word the were written
Would you also apply that to "הַשֵּׁם֙", (HAShem, referring to God's name) being a generic "name", one of many possible? Or would you consider in English, "the Lord" to refer to one of many? Whilst it may be true that, "English does not tolerate a definite article before a proper personal noun", that doesn't mean that it can't be used to identify one individual; you don't need to identify someone solely by their, "proper personal names". "The Hulk" and "The Rock" seem to be unique identifiers in English, or perhaps even "the devil". Perhaps, for the sake of clarity, it would be helpful (or perhaps it is included in the full presentation of which this is an excerpt) to show how many adversaries we have before God if more than one, so that we can see the options for 'satan' in Job. My perspective on same is based in part on Revelation 12:10 (b) ...."for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God." which appears to be singluar. Revelation 12:12 (b), referring to this individual says "But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!" which is also singular and linking "accuser" to "the devil". So, while I can currently agree that Job does not refer to a proper personal name, I am not yet convinced that we cannot know the identity of a specific individual because of the presence of "the".
The book of enoch describes 5 satans. There may be more to the story than the Bible is saying. Not because it doesn't want us to know, but possibly because it was common knowledge that it didn't have to be spelled out. Along the way,, we lost the culture that was readily able to clearly understand the Word. This is why apocryphal writings are important. Not that those books are canonical, but they explain the writings. If a pastor was giving a sermon, and decides to allude the Narnia, the audience would understand, but someone that reads the sermon 500 years from now, and hadn't read Narnia, would not be able to fully understand it.
Satan in the job book is the same Satan that takes the role of “the satan” to use job to challenge his ego, to push him to find his calling to god, to strengthen his spirit and to challenge his comfort zone.
It's strange that GOD has a member of his "council" to go out and see "who" is being "righteous/unrighteous," and then asks and wonders about it, as if he doesn't know what's going on.
Does seem strange. Seems, to me, to fall somewhere between Psalm 8 and God's desire to delegate and allow us (and the elohim) to participate.

Rev 12:10..."the accuser of our brethren is cast down,..." from Rev 12:9 that old serpent called the Devil and Satan. Just sayin...... the Whole Bible approach works pretty good.
My thought as well.
@@EndTimesHarvest Worst mistake he ever made was making sure a man who had never sinned died...
THAT is the legal reason that Jesus defeated him.

Just what I was thinking.

However, in English we do use articles to separate commoners from the important. The Satan can be meant as the supreme accuser, the one known as the Accuser. Like in narrative stories, like the Director, the Producer, etc., which is how Job is written. Its more a narrative than a documentary, still real. But the rest of the Doctor's explanation here is great.
So do you believe that it is the same figure from Genesis 3? Because I do. I'm not really convinced of this personal vs. office arguement. Seems to me the entity accusing in Job is more of a person than an office.

Woooow. It just dawned on me that the accuser was actually trying to prove God's assessment of job was wrong. What world would we be living in right now if God was wrong about job. Mind blown!
If God himself said that Job was righteous, it meant that Job would not fail when Satan began to test him.

Does not Ha Shatan mean the Opposer? That is what this being who rebelled against God has become, the Opposer of everything what God stands for, like love, humility, charity, generosity, truth, patience, loyalty, honesty and so on. Although one of the points is to teach people to trust in God no matter what happens, it's important to not distort ANY part of the bible. By saying Job was being taught actually goes against God's position. God's position was that Job ALREADY knew to trust in God despite anything that would happen to him. An interesting point; however, who else but Satan himself would be so foolish as to question God's knowledge or omniscience? No; the Facebook atheist may be correct about the grammar, but the use of "the" before "Satan" does not mean that the one so referred is not Satan, anymore than calling God "the LORD" means "the LORD" doesn't refer to God.
Yes, the NT calls Satan "The Enemy" or, in the same words Michael said above about the figure in Job, "the Adversary."
Hope this helps understand his point a little better, not that hes correct or incorrect on any of his theology. But he is correct 100pct on the grammar and it is futile and harmful to not trust it. You'll just be holding your own learning behind.

I think we know who The Accuser is. He is still accusing God's children to this day. But, as we read in Revelation, he will be cast down and not be able to accuse anyone ever again.
@José Riquelme That's not what the Bible claims in Revelation. Revelation was written about the future events as laid out in the first chapter.
@José Riquelme Revelation 1:1 "The revelation of Jesus Christ that God gave him to show his servants what must soon take place. He made it known by sending his angel to his servant John,
I too believe he was cast out after Jesus ascended to heaven.
The 4 falls of Satan are mentioned and are as follows
- his role as cherub to adversary
- him losing access to heaven and sent to earth
-him being chained for 1,000 years in the bottomless pit

The Mike will never admit it but ET's explains this
Well...from what Mike teaches. The lesser “gods” and Elohim, God also created with free will. And Mike explained that it wasn’t just proving Himself to this one but all the others witnessing as well.
@Vinny M: Well, what does the Bible say about that?
@Vinny M Well what do you mean sacrificed? God is the creator of life he can recreate and take them at will
Revelation 15:3-4
[3]And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.
This breakdown is next level.

Get that apologetics cash! Jingle those ears and they jingle their wallets.
This confirms that we should address HS as “Holy Spirit” not “the Holy Spirit”. I started doing this and now I get why. Heiser is truly the master.

@@robertcoward9923 I agree with u. Much of the Bible has been correctly understood but even so, it seems that Heiser wants to indulge in re-interpretating what is already known, simply because he thinks he will discover some other meaning to what we have understood all along. It would have been fine if his different understanding was edifying spiritually but saying that the Accuser is just doing his divine duty gives the appearance of removing the devil from his evil and makes God look like someone who enjoys indulging Satan's accusations.
I apply this to my life. Lots to think about. Thanks Mike
Whenever Mike says "village atheist" I can't help but laugh.
The serpent
The devil
The satan
The dragon

Even God Himself, at times, is "haw shawtawn."
It simply means "to be in opposition". Not a name.
An Accuser is one who opposes the one accused.
God was often in opposition to the idolatry of man.

Everything Job lost, was things he was afraid of loosing in the first place. He sowed the seeds.
Also, what about this verse - "Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee." (Jude 1:9)
This verse seems to imply that even an archangel such as Michael refused to turn into an 'accuser', even when his accusation wud have been justified against a being such as the devil. It would also seem that Michael by saying "the LORD rebuke thee" understands that it is God alone who is entitled to accuse/ rebuke anyone and the devil in being an 'accuser' has usurped this role of God.
Good question
..read your Bible and let Jesus teach you..
Looks like we're just pawns (toys) or playthings in a cosmic chess game.
Could we be the Prize?
@The Mask maybe we should take our Creator's instruction & Repent & Believe.
And what about in Rev 12 and 20 where it actually SAYS that Satan is a being and calls it a 'him'? Of course it's a real being.
Your presupposing these books are univocal.
Also genesis 3.15 describes it. There are at least two or three bloodlines. Genesis 3.15 describes what will happen on earth and whats going on. But as Einstein said before, the stupidity is infinite. The most people read it and take it metaphorically. Many say, oh dont take that so serious
Yessss I have thought these things before!!! I’m 100% in agreement!
It should also be noted that the book of Job is not a historical record of events. It's prose. It tells a story that makes a point.
I have kids...i could do things sometimes more quickly and correctly, and I even know what the results will be, etc. However, I encourage the kids to help me...i do it for them, not just because I'm lazy!-ha

Good question...
The satan did not just challenge the truthfulness and omniscience of God. He also challenged the very notion of goodness. He was basically saying: "No one does good because it's the right thing to do, even Job does it only because you bribe him. Everyone cares only about themselves in the end."
Hebrew and English both allow for an article before a proper name when that proper name is descriptive.
