- Sacking of Rome: Empire of Charles V - Medieval Kingdoms Total War 1212AD Mod Gameplay - This is a recreation of the sacking of Rome 1527. Charles V has brought an army of 20,000 Soldiers to the gates of Rome. Rome only has a small force of about 5,000 men. The battle is a nasty one, and Rome is completely sacked. 1,000 defending troop are executed, and about 45,000 citizens are murdered, wounded, and exiled. It was a sad day for Europe, and some say the end of the Italian renaissance. In this recreation of the battle we are using the Mod for Total War Attila called Medieval Kingdoms Total War 1212AD. There are 4 attacking armies, taking on 3 defending Italian armies. This one is a great one :D Enjoy the Siege Battle :D

*Hey guy! Just a little heads up about the battle! The first time I record the battle I lost power on the last 5 mins of the replay. And was pretty frustrated. Because the recording was lost. So I decided to turn on a setting that would end the recording and restart it every 10 mins. That way if I crash or lose power The worst I will have to do is record 10 mins from where it last restarted the recording. Well instead of setting the at 10 mins, it was on 1 min. So the recording resets every 1 min, and you can tell because there is a little skip in the video. Im so sorry about that, but I just couldn't record an hour long video for a third time. But I don't really think it is that bad. Hope you can still enjoy :D*
Apollo, you should be battling Jackie Fish right now not making comments on UA-cam. ;)
Pixelated Apollo is this the comment you were typing during the stream ?

The Seat of power is in danger
There´s a foe of a thousand swords
They´ve been abandoned by their lords
Their fall from grace will pave their path, to damnation
Then the 189
In the service of heaven
They’re protecting the holy line
It was 1527, gave their lives on the steps to heaven
Thy will be done!
For the grace, for the might of our lord
For the home of the holy
For the faith, for the way of the sword
Gave their lives so boldly
For the grace, for the might of our lord
In the name of his glory
For the faith, for the way of the sword
Come and tell their story again
Under guard of 42
Along a secret avenue
Castel Saint’Angelo is waiting
They’re the guard of the Holy See

The Holy Roman Empire had been at war with the Papal States and the League of Cognac for a time now, they had sent a exiled French Duke to clear out and block Italy. This army had been disgruntled for a while, as they were not paid adequately and the Duke told them there was to be a great plunder of the rich Italian City-States. They headed south, being paid by Florence and Pisa to not be attacked, they finally arrived at Rome, the hungry and angered soldiers pressured the Duke to attack Rome. He soon did. As the soldiers attacked, the Duke was killed as the army approached the walls, leaving the hungry, gold-thirsty germano-spanish army with no leader. They charged through the city and the Swiss Guard held bravely. They made it to St. Peter's Basilica and the Swiss Guard held bravely as Pope Clement VII was escorted through a secret passage to Castel Sant'Angelo. He hid in the Castle seeing his city be ravaged and destroyed. After this, the Pope was at Charles V's whim (although Charles V never wished for this whole affair to happen) he wouldn't do anything to offend the Holy Roman Emperor and perhaps this is a reason why he didn't accept the annulment of the marriage between Catherine of Aragon (Charles V's aunt) and Henry VIII.
Legion XIII u just got historied bro
There was no valid reason for annulment anyway.
Yep, quite ironic, the Holy Roman Empire barely controlled Rome, its namesake and resided in Germany which had a big impact on the fall of Rome.
Legion XIII Yeah, because the papacy is so holy ...
Revan Ar-Pharazôn For all intents and purposes, to medieval people and all of Western Europe at the time, Rome and the Papacy was holy. It was, to them, the second most holiest place other than Jerusalem, the Caput Mundi and the Papacy was the descendant of the apostle Peter and all that... So the Papacy, to medieval people, was holy it was very holy.
tsk tsk tsk, arze-en fox... also at 46:00, that opening on the covering closest to the colosseum does not allow anything to go through it, that's why no one was going through there. Also I see what you mean with the gen, that was a great opportunity to get some kills behind enemy lines. Oh well, great battle overall, and thanks for covering it!
Thanks for the replay
I'm Italian, and even if I live in the north, far from the Eternal City, and so my culture is pretty much different from south-region, italian people still suffer from that catastrophe ad many words in our language recall that event. But as an italian, I love to see Apollo doing commentary on my lands! Thanks pixie!
Ha ha! You fool! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders - the most famous of which is "never get involved in a land war in Asia" - but only slightly less well-known is this: "Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line"!
-Vizzini
"powerhouse," "rack up kills," "cycle charges," "comment about artillery," If this was a drinking game I'd be dead
I cant believe apollo is not getting tired of doing this even if its always crashing.
God bless the 189
The German Landsknechts win over the Swiss Reislaüfer in the Battle of Pavia
They have to make a game entirely on Charles v and his conquering as emperor. I mean, the troops and the tactics at the time variated so much, kings like Henry and Francis are perfect antagonist and still u can make campaigns about the Italian wars, conquest of America, war against the Turks, wars against the German princes, and other episodes like Lepanto(even though is a bit after Charles, but could still be a DLC, like Philip’s kingdom) or Tunisi, the sack of rome. I mean I want to use troops like Swiss mercenaries or landskenech, Tercios, French cavalry. I mean it’s just perfect.
We need to make a petition
Thanks for another great vid, PA. Just few historical corrections to help you along the way. Kingdom of Sicily was never a part of the Holy Roman Empire. What happened was that on various different occasions such as during the reign of the Hohenstaufen dynasty in the 1200s, the Holy Emperors also were Kings of Sicily by inheritance. Incidentally, this was the case again during the reign of Charles V, but this time, the succession was through the Spanish connection, because the crown of Sicily had went to the ruling house of the Kingdom of Aragon in the 15th century which as you know, Charles V inherited along with the crown of Castile as well from his maternal grandparents, the Catholic Monarchs of Spain. So in short, the Kingdom of Sicily-and the Kingdom of Naples-were never officially part of the HRE, but at various points in history it was under the personal union through inheritance and marriages.
APOLLO. FIX THE QUESTION. You misspelt Constantinople.
you cant fix it once it is released i think.....RIPPPPPP

6:43 that charge like wtf
How does artillery get such a clean shot? Manual fire.
If you ever see a single artillery shot go off on its own, it's because it's being fired manually. All 4 artillery will fire together if being used normally.
No shit sherlock wink wink
(its Grim)
Stand of the Swiss Guard
Joined by remnants of the Roman garrison, the Swiss made their stand in a cemetery well within the Vatican. Captain Röist was wounded and then killed by Spanish mercenaries, in full view of his wife. The Swiss fought bitterly, but were immensely outnumbered and almost annihilated. Some survivors, accompanied by a band of refugees, fell back to the Basilica steps. Those who went toward the Basilica were massacred, and just above forty survived. This group of forty, under the command of Hercules Goldli, managed to stave off the Habsburg troops pursuing the Pope's entourage as it made its way across the Passetto to the Castel Sant'Angelo.
20,000+ Spanish mercenaries Vs. 189 Papal Swiss Guards... how good were the chances lol
Roland Rolihaft and the Swiss Guard killed almost 1300 men in their last stand
Apolo : Rome has suffered
Constantinople :Am i a joke on you?
Sicily belonged to the kingdom of Aragon (part of the Spanish Empire) that became a part of Charles V's empire when he became king of Spain.
A siege with Apollo's commentary after the school... you made my day
Loving these historical lectures!
This is why I love Late medieval/Early renaissance history!! Also I'm now 100% sure pixelated is baked when he records these vids xD
At that time sicily was part of spain as it used to be part of the crown of aragon
Yeah and at the same time Bohemia was Kingdom
It was a really fun battle Apollo:) Such great scale, epic moments of heroism and sacrifices, loved that:P And your commentary makes this even more enjoyable:) I miss sieges like this in Warhammer but hey, Ancient Empires mod full release for Attila is what I'm waiting for^^
Apollo's parents are out of town... party at his house!
Great Video as always. Throwing Axe scene was wild!
Stephan Ayotte lol I live on my own soooo there's always a party
was about to sleep when I saw this in my subscription box but then I realized that I could watch it tomorrow without having to worry that I'm gonna sleep late .
Impressive. Thank you Pixelated Apollo for your time and dedication. I appreciate all your effort and time invested in your videos.
This was so damn epic. Probably the best battle video I've seen, definitely the first hour long one that I watched every minute of..
RIP sweet prince (lol) who couldn't accept his death and poor guy near the end that had enough, probably has PTSD :( XD
in spain we say Charles first of spain fifth of germany
The Bloke yep Carlos the 1st
charls the fifth of austria ;)
True, but in general, rulers are referred to by their most important title (in Charles's case, being the Holy Roman Emperor was more important than being the King of Spain).
@@TheLordoftheRavens Not realy sure about that. Cause at the time Spain had also Naples and a very big part of America under his rule
@@xShadow199 That isn't my opinion. The Holy Roman Emperor was considered the more important title. Again, he is referred to as Charles V internationally, so most of the world sees it that way. In Spain, he might be Charles I because the Spanish crown is probably seen as the more relevant one in the country itself. But everywhere else, he is Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor.
i love ur videos please do more like this i have been searching for you tubers like u with olden day battle games i watch alot of ur older videos. have u ever watched sharpi
1.45 seeing that river made me realize that a custom venice with loads of rivers and bridges wud be sik
I can always appreciate warriors who fight savagely, tooth and nail to the end, particularly when they’re outnumbered. Men like that fought their way into history and immortality by their tenacity and stubborn resistance. The 189, the 300, the battle of Samar, the Bismarck and his crew slugging it out against an entire fleet to the end... I don’t care what cause they fought for or who they were, I respect that warrior spirit that exemplifies some of the best qualities a fighting man can have. I deployed, I got in a couple firefights, I felt that fear. I can’t imagine being in a position where you know you’re going to die and nothing you do will change it but still being able to muster the courage to put up such a fight that you’re remembered throughout the centuries as some of the best warriors in history. I hope I’d do the same but I don’t think anyone knows until they’re in that position. That’s a rare breed of person that will still hold the line even when they’re doomed.
RIP that guy that got shot by an arrow through the cheek
Omg when u said "I hope Rome doesn't get sacked while their there...I doubt it" that was funny AF
If the defenders took advantage of the opening at the pillars with cav they might have routed that army. Wanted to at least see if it would work. Pity. Great upload as always.
Great vid, loved the Castle Bran and the Moria ones you posted recently as well.
I watched multiple videos as I always do to see if a UA-camr is good and man you are one of my favorite
Subbed
Hey I love your battles. I watch your battles every day
When apollo asked "what is there to fight for?" the swiss guard's reply was "FOR GOD!". haha

“Rome is on my bucket list, before you know *I KICK THE BUCKET*
I swear if Total War battles were on TV, you could do the commentary easily. Right now 90% of the world is watching the world cup, and me, I watch this. Definitively better 😂
"Sicily is a stubborn man." Yeah, that sums up our history pretty well. We don't always win, hell, we usually don't win, but dammit, we're going to fight you
Beautiful settlement! Rome really didn't look quite as spectacular at the time though. It's especially weird seeing the Colosseum intact.
When in Rome, flee like a Roman
When in Rome, stand and fight like the Swiss.
Dillon Lee when in Rome, plunder like a german(ic tribesman)
when in Rome create desolation and call it peace
hey Apollo you should listen to
"Sabaton Last Stand" it's a good song.👍
i have heard it :P
Pixelated Apollo ohh okay cool.😊
fellow sabaton fan !
when the horses rushed out when the wall fell was sooooo cool
Bavaria - Munich the oktoberfest is getting closer…🍺🍻😂🤣
After the serious and sad intro, "So now we're going to watch the virtual recreation for our own entertainment and fun..." Best intro ever!
Sicily was a junior partner in a personal union with Castille, and would later integrate with the Castille-Aragon-Navarre merged new country called Spain. Spain would later go under a personal union with the Netherlands, and Austria, which was one of the Prince electors in the HRE and the Kaiser.
Some correction and information on historical background:
Charles V did have birthright to Spain, but not really on Holy Roman Empire, since the emperor was decided not by succession but by election, although the Hapsburg(the dynasty of Charles V) held the seat for generations.
Holy Roman Emperor held the Kingdom of Sicily at the time of Hohenstaufen dynasty, at 12~13th century. Then it was a part of Kingdom of Aragon by personal union(one king ruling both kingdoms, not as one kingdom), but by the time of Sack of Rome(16th century), Sicily was an independent kingdom, although I don't think they took part in the event.
Plus, Hungary as an independent state was destroyed just the year before this event by Ottoman Empire, then was divided between Holy Roman Empire and Ottoman Empire. The sack was done by German mercenaries, the Landsknecht, so no place for Hungarians I suppose?
You're doing a great job man love your commentary skills
Rome is built on hills not flat land
Lol he did not even mention that Charles V didnt pay his soldiers and that Charles already owned Rome.
His army was angry because they needed the money. That’s when the soldiers attacked Rome.
No hate, just correcting😁
Still love your vids!
What is the music at the end of the video, Apollo ? Never heard it in Attila or in the mod, but sounds great ! :D
I was In Rome 6 or 5 years ago and it was my lifegoal, and I cried when I was in the colosseum(I was like 12 years old), becouse that was my lifegoal, to get in to the heeart of the Gloryous ang mighty Roman Empire
Sicily was not a Holy Roman Empire territory. Sicily was a territory of Spain, which Charles V inherited. It was only a personal union.
Man, sicily just taking it all up like it's nothing. Good on them.
Ah, a good old Medieval video, Thank god Pixie!
You know, the more I see 1212ad I wonder. Should the mixers make Apollo's knights like how they did in Napoleon total war. Apollo's knights and Jackie fish's army. That would be so cool!
During the 1500's Sicily was apart of the crown of aragon (Spain) And the kingdom of Naples was being fought over by the kingdoms of France and the empire of Charles the V. Ultimately ending in a Spanish victory.
Keep up the epic vids bro they are amazing!
Awesome Video thank u!
One of the best replays I've ever seen ;)
Amazed at seeing Atilla running this smoothly with this many units.
What hardware do you run this on?
I can' get it to run this smoothly with, msi gtx1080 8gb, i7-6700k Cpu and 32gb ram..
3:40 Apollo I have to correct you.
Bohemia became hereditary kingdom in 1198 under king Ottokar I of Bohemia. Under Holy Roman Empire one of the prince-electors was king of Bohemia. So in time of Charles V there was no Duchy of Bohemia, in fact just a year earlier in 1526 Luis II of Bohemia and Hungary died in the battle of Mohács and crown passed to
Ferdinand I younger brother of Charles V
Otherwise I love your channel...:D
Just finished making dinner, perfect timing pixie :)
Jamaly at 1:00
Jk your probably in a different country
Yep, Apollo's Knights come from all around the world :P
Great vid! More Seven kingdoms please:)
"rome is my bucket-list"
"before i kick my bucket"
" LEL "
This Battle, oh my god.
I love you
I love listening to you comment on the war. If you can can you do more Viking skirmishes
Well that flower sigil on Bohemian knights is exactly the same as the one of my hometown. I'm from Bohemia, nice details.
38:09 "Sicily is a stubborn man." -Pixelated Apollo, 2017
all i hear is
"for the grace for the might of our lord"
"for the home of the holy"
am i the only one
straight after stream i am here watching the greater total war youtuber of all time
The way he say hey guys at beginning
Fuck yeah!! I always wanted to see you doing the sack of Rome!! thanks you pixie!!
were learning about this in class right now
I'm pretty sure that Sicily was never in the HRE, but it was a Hapsburg-ruled state from 1554-1860 (according to google). Great vid though.
amazing replay!, we need more 1212AD! :D
The statues covered in blood are hilarious
Siege of Carthage 2v2.... you know what I'm talking about
Great battle apollo! love your vids! please do more third age and 1212!
Love the pike and shot era I think there is a cool documentary on this battle on the history channel.
I love how he tells suck a depressing story about the battle's history and then says "now we shall recreate it for our own amusement" 😂 not hating I just find that extremely funny
Fun fact: There was an eartquake in 1349 in Rome and the Colosseum was half destroyed and that's why it coudn't be full built in 1527.
You gotta love Rome. Romans were awesome!!
lengman byzantines
Οδυσσέας Κελεσής fucked by spanish warriors, the best of their time
Juanlu Lourido still conquered the peninsula
Οδυσσέας Κελεσής you know what's wiered, the romans first hated the christians, then Christianity became very popular so the romans let the people BELIVE inchristianity
Thatdudebehindu wrong, they made their own Christian the Roman Catholics. Who were more pagan than Christian.
best way to get your replay on pixis channel is to tell him ''dude i have massive 400 cavalry charging in a siege battle''
That giant building you call an abandoned arena is called a hippodrome
6:45 one of the best charges ive seen ever
Is Atilla better optimized now? Or is it this mod that makes it better? Great battle by the way.
And to think when I played medieval 2 total war for the first time when I was doing a siege battle I asked *should a bring cav?*
You should make a series called " Fun Facts with Apollo" xD
Charles V took a time machine to sack Rome in 527AD! I like where this is going.
I was in Mordor when the great Sicilian crossbows were surrounded but fought on.
But the bigger question: Where was Gondor when they fought like champs?
