I don't think I can tell the difference between the sides. I don't tape it, either, just fold and use the rubber band at the throat. That way I can take the grip off and use the other side after a while. You can actually get away with using the same grip 4 times since the ends of the grip are the same, especially if you have a one handed backhand and aren't roughing up the upper part of the grip. Not that they are expensive, but they aren't super durable and you can go through them pretty fast if you only use them once.

A little tip from back in the day, when there were still smokers playing this sport. If you have a lighter, heat the red finishing tape a little with fire and it'll hold pretty well. It works with other tapes too and sometimes even if you reuse a finishing tape. But be careful when you travel, don't leave the lighter in your bag when flying. I've just got my first tourna grip! I suffer with really sweaty hands doing any sport, saw these recommended on UA-cam so bought a pack of 10… and have just discovered, like you say they aren't long enough! 😫 I'll get the XL next time! Lesson learned. I too was confused with which way so this has helped thank you.

Best grip in the world. I've been using it since I started playing tennis, so must be almost 40 years. If there's a difference between the sides I've never noticed.
I have used quite a few different overgrips over the years: Wilson Pro, Pro-Soft, Pro-Sensation, Babolat Play, Tourna, Karakal, Head, Prince etc. If you like a very grippy and absorbent one I recommend Kirschbaum Touch It overgrip. Even though it's slightly thinner than most at 0.5mm, it is incredibly grippy and just seems to get more so. Really very good especially in sweaty conditions. Just as easy to put on as Wilson Pro too.
Tourna is my go-to overgrip. Been using it for over 10 years, and eventually I gave up on trying to wrap it the "proper" way. I just wrap it, then bind it in place with the rubber grip ring on the racquet. I don't even use the finishing tape.

It helped just to see how to open the package, know what side to use and set up the tape to easily use once I was done wrapping.
I used to worry about how I put it on and then I watched Richard Gasquet put it on during a match. I think he changes it every changeover. Does it fast. Only goes up halfway. Now I just pull it tight and wrap it. Got a little band I use to secure it at the top. I don’t mess with the tape.
I love tourna honestly the best grip hands down.. even though it doesn’t last long it makes sense that it doesn’t.. it really takes care of the sweat and doesn’t feel slick like the rest.. no other grip comes close and I’ve tried them all..
Volkl V-Dry is very good, but it's not as widely available as Tourna. It also doesn't perform as well as Tourna in hot/humid conditions. I've tried it, but went back to Tourna.
I felt like an idiot trying to get the plastic off the roll. It was the first time I have used Tourna Grip, so I had no idea what I was doing. Some pickleball overgrips have an adhesive on the bottom end so starting it is easier. This is less expensive, so I figured I would give it a try.
Fyi you can actually use both sides. Tournagrips dont last that long especially for sweaty hands like mine. Once you have worn one side you can use the other side it still tacky and absorbable.
And if you use a one handed BH and have relatively small hands, you can even get more use by reversing the butt and upper ends. Effectively four goes out of one Tourna Grip! I did this as a junior in the 80s when I had to buy these out of my allowance money. My Millennial kids would die of embarrassment at even such a suggestion! 😅

I often feel like my fingers have to "fit in" to each overlap of the grip. So the hand sits more comfortably on the even surfaces than a bumpy one while using a semi western grip. Any ideas or tips?

All the tourna dry grips have gone down in quality. They fall apart in my hands after 5 swings. I have bought from a tennis store and tennis warehouse with the same results. I feel like they are putting more quality on their tacky grip line

Let’s keep it simple. No scissors, measuring or scotch tape required. Always finish your wrap with the tapered end. It’ll still look natural once you finalize it with the supplied tape.

By your logic, that the plastic film protects the external playing surface of the Tourna Grip, the Wilson Overgrip is set up all wrong since the plastic film is on the sticky tape (internal surface) side! 😛 That said, I have done the same as you in the last 40 years with regards which is the “preferred” external surface of Tourna Grip. This side has a somewhat better finished appearance - hard to explain, but old timers will probably get this. Incidentally, there was no plastic film backing 40 years ago!! 👴
Your video really make me put the grip in a wrong way. The side with the plastic definitely more slippery than the side with no plastic. If you see closely it is more shiny and the other is matte.
I've been using tourna grip for 30 years. It doesn't last long but nothing else I've used compares. Richard Gasquet uses it. I was courtside for one of his matches a few years ago at the Aus Open and he takes about 25 seconds to replace it.
Man... I used this grip for 20 years and never thought to fold the top part over like that before taping. Now I use Wilson grip and the whole starting point and side of grip is established on those, but I can still use the folding hack on top. Thanks!
I've seen Grigor Dimitrov apply a grip like this one between games for 30-seconds - 1 minute or so. I don't know if it is the same brand but it was the same colour and I am sure it came in a roll like this one (multiple grips rolled together)
When you buy a 10-pack (non-XL) the grips on the outside are much shorter than the ones on the inside of the roll so you have to stretch the grips like crazy to get them up to the top of the handle, also with 1mm of overlap. But still my favorite grip.
Just watch Richard Gasquet put on the tourna grip in 5 seconds during a match. Also it is so reversible that you can turn it over and use the other side if you don’t put a hole in it. It says reversible somewhere on packaging. These “hacks “ make it look harder than it is.

I don't know why people even bother with Tourna these days. Decent over-grips the way they work, but they barely last me a session. It's fine for the pros, some of who seem to like the feel of it, but hardly viable for the average Club-level hacker. And the design is absolutely thoughtless to the point of being, like you say, a pain in the ass! And, yes, the standard length just isn't enough to cover the average grip! They've had enough time to improve on all this, but they just can't be arsed. I like the grips, but unless they make it last longer, and improve packaging, I'm not buying. The fact that some of my favourite players used them is just not enough reason.
Ive been using Tourna MEGA TAC for years now, and it is true about the plastic covering the top of the grip. Mega og's come rolled up in the exact same way, plastic covers the TACKY side. When Ive been careless and placed the og on its other side by mistake you can definitely feel the lack of tackiness. Why cant Tourna make their grips with a pre cut angled starting point just to save a couple of bucks???

I really don’t understand what the fuss is about. Once I’ve worn out one side (which usually takes 2 hours) I flip it over and use the other side. Since it’s quite stretchy, wrapping it without creases isn’t very problematic.

Great tip on how to fold the over-grip at the top of the grip prior to taping. I always had an extra flap that was annoying.

Tournagrip is easy to fit, just follow the instructions on the back of the packet.
