  • Are you experiencing eye discomfort or redness? You might be dealing with viral conjunctivitis, commonly known as "eye flu." In this informative video, we will delve into the details of viral conjunctivitis, with a particular focus on adenoviral conjunctivitis, its clinical presentations, and related conditions like epidemic keratoconjunctivitis and pharyngoconjunctival fever.
    What Is Viral Conjunctivitis?
Viral conjunctivitis, often referred to as "eye flu," is an eye infection characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner surface of the eyelids.
    Causes of Viral Conjunctivitis:
Viral conjunctivitis is typically caused by various viruses, with adenoviruses being the most common culprits. Other viruses, such as herpes simplex and varicella-zoster, can also lead to this condition.
    Types of Viral Conjunctivitis:
There are several types of viral conjunctivitis, but adenoviral conjunctivitis is the most prevalent and noteworthy. It can spread rapidly, especially in crowded places.
    Adenoviral Conjunctivitis:
Adenoviral conjunctivitis is caused by adenoviruses and can lead to a range of symptoms, including redness, itching, watery discharge, and sensitivity to light.
    Clinical Presentations of Adenoviral Conjunctivitis:
Follicular Conjunctivitis: Characterized by tiny bumps on the inner surface of the eyelids.
Preauricular Lymphadenopathy: Swollen lymph nodes in front of the ear.
    Photophobia: Increased sensitivity to light.
Subepithelial Infiltrates: Spots that can appear on the cornea.
    Epidemic Keratoconjunctivitis (EKC):
EKC is a severe form of adenoviral conjunctivitis, marked by a longer duration and increased discomfort. It can lead to blurred vision and even scarring of the cornea.
    Pharyngoconjunctival Fever (PCF):
PCF is another manifestation of adenovirus infection, often accompanied by fever, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes.
    Diagnosis and Treatment:
Diagnosing viral conjunctivitis usually involves a clinical examination, and treatment primarily focuses on symptom relief. Artificial tears, antihistamines, and cold compresses can help alleviate discomfort.
    Prevention Tips:
To reduce the risk of viral conjunctivitis, practice good hygiene, avoid touching your eyes, and steer clear of infected individuals. Frequent handwashing is crucial.
