Jim Henson & Kevin Clash on Arsenio Hall

- This was Jim Henson's final performance as Kermit the Frog on may 4th 1990. Two weeks later Henson would die from a severe streptococcal infection. This show also marked the first public appearance of Electric Mayhem member, the Muppet known as Clifford, voiced by Kevin Clash. Clash, probably best known as the voice of Elmo on Sesame Street is the subject of "Being Elmo: A Puppeteer's Journey." The film won the Special Jury Prize award at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. At the end of the interview you can see Kevin Clash seated next to Jim.

The fact that he had a “frog in his throat” and Jim said he was upset with this performance for not meeting his standard, and it was the last time Kermit was ever seen by Jim Henson. It’s absolutely heartbreaking.
He struggled to meet his standards because his body was already fighting bacterial pneumonia, which is what killed him.
Hard to believe it’s been 30 years since Jim’s passing.
He clearly is such a remarkable and one of a kind human being who saw beauty in the world and embraced it the best way he could with the incredible talent he had. He encouraged people to pretend and to believe. He may be gone but he will forever be an inspiration.
R.I.P. Jim
He's been dead for 30 years he does not need another damn eulogy on every UA-cam video that features him
@@TheBigMclargehuge I mean, this was his last appearance as Kermit
Its funny how Kermit didn’t die and is in fact still living today despite the rumor that Henson was Kermit…not true I guess
@@TheBigMclargehuge if you got a problem with me paying my respects to Jim regardless of how long it's been since he died, then get over it and go be miserable somewhere else
Sad that he passed away 11 days later after this. I believe if he had medical attention sooner he would still be here with us. 😢
12 days after this, he passed away 😢
That’s likely to be true, but we can never be too sure. Underlying medical conditions can make an infection much worse, and there are strains of bacteria which have grown much more resistant to antibiotics, one reason researchers are trying to develop new generations of antibiotics.
But yes, you are right. People should seek more immediate medical attention when they feel ill.
Aww.. no way.. What a hard working man he was
Jim Henson was a practicing Christian Scientist and didn’t believe in getting traditional medical attention. His life probably would have been longer if not for that.
@@avdad2000 Another sad victim of religion......what a waste.
if I had a time machine I would go back to this exact day and go JIM PLEASE SEE A DOCTOR *NOW*
I agree with you
Yeah. Things would’ve been different if Jim DID go to the doctor and find out about his fatal condition sooner. He would’ve sold his company and characters (except Sesame Street; The Fraggle Rock characters would’ve been included in the sale) to Disney in 1990 rather than his family making the transaction in 2004, the planned Disney/Muppet ideas (Pandemonium Pizza, Great Muppet Movie Ride, Muppet High, Year of the Pig, Muppetland takeover of Disneyland) would’ve come to fruition, and Jim would’ve retired at some point, passing the roles of his characters to Steve Whitmire and etc. later on.

When Kermit first came out, I was looking at how Henson was talking and controlling Kermit to see how he did it.

In the new biography, it says Jim was disappointed by his performance in this interview because of being under the weather. Personally, I think it's perfect; he sounds just like Jim's typical Kermit.
Under the weather indeed... he died that same month. A few short weeks later.
@106791625209331645481 I was seven when Jim Henson died, and even though I never met him in person,I was still pretty sad, since I love Sesame Street and The Muppets. 52 is far too young to go, but I feel that Jim would want us to remember him for the gentle soul he was, not how he died.
Stephen Leather My next tattoo is going to be a rainbow with the words "Someday we'll find it, the rainbow connection". In honor of Jim.
He had Walking Pneumonia. He had grown up Christian Scientist so he was reluctant to get treatment.
Henson also pushed himself too hard. The Pneumonia killed him because he was working way too hard and not slowing down.
Stephen Leather He was 53 years old
It’s wild that Steve Whitmire got fired for “portraying Kermit as a miserable victim”. Kermit has never been mean or truly depressed, but even with Jim, in every interview he’s struggling with something. This never came off as him being some kind of victim, it humanized him and made him feel like a real person with problems and a life outside of the muppets. It was truly something else, and I hate that he’s become what he is now.
That man was right up there with walt disney and micky mouse. "jim henson and kermit the frog." Good man.
I'd argue that Henson and Kermit were even more important.

What is magical about this interview is that Arsenio isn't talking to Jim. He's looking at Kermit and speaking to Kermit. The sign of a true master of puppetry is when those around you ignore you and react to the puppet as though it is it's own individual.
Jim Henson was special. That’s why he was a master as what he did. Rip Jim we miss you
RIP James Maury Henson👍👍 it's so tragic that we lost him and Richard Hunt in such a short amount of time. I've always been a great fan of his works, he was a true entertainer and I really hope that all puppeteers will be inspired by what he did
Kevin Clash is extraordinary. Jim Henson's passing was one of the saddest days, but Clash took up the mantle like no one else could've. And the audience really doesn't seem to know what to make of Clifford, since they're expecting kid jokes and it definitely wasn't what they got.
“I would say I had a frog in my throat but I’m not gonna day that” ~ Kermit the Frog May 4th 1990
If that is what Jim calls his worst performance as Kermit, then it's proof what a showman the man truly is! Even when terminally ill, the guy keeps going! If this has to be the last (or at least, one of the last) moments between father and frog, then, darn it, their relationship is going to end strong!
Last appearance of a great man.
31 years, RIP.
"this song does make me feel better."
.............so it did for everyone. Thanks, Jim.
This happened 30 years ago now on May 4, 1990 and I can't believe this was Jim Henson's last time working with Kermit The Frog on T.V. and that 2 weeks after this he died suddenly. Its so emotional.
I wish Kevin and Jim would have got to work together longer they seem to have great chemistry Kermit and Elmo were hilarious together on sesame Street and don't forget Ernie and hoots the owl
I just came back from seeing the recent part of Animation Lookback: the Muppets part 4 and truly this was Jim Henson's final performance as Kermit the Frog and his final Television appearance! R.I.P. Jim Henson
Same.
Jim doesn’t even have to be looking at Kermit for him to be alive and moving, it’s truly magic happening right there.
This is my first time seeing this. I'm absolutely astounded with the talent that Jim Henson had, even through being quite sick. I'm saddened that he died not even two weeks after this at a fairly young age. This man was a complete genius!!
I never knew that Clifford was done by the same person who did Elmo that's amazing.

To think, the month this was filmed was the same month Jim Henson passed away.
He passed less than 2 weeks later
It saddens me that nobody said anything. He looked so ill here. He must have already been sick because they mentioned that he had sore throat :(
Henson caught the flu en route to L.A. for this taping. But he because he grew up Christian Scientist, he was reluctant to get it treated and refused over the counter medicine. About a week later, during a hectic flight and work schedule, the Flu progressed into Walking Pneumonia, but again, Jim was reluctant to go to the Hospital so it worsened due to overwork. It wasn't until May 15,1990 when he finally agreed to go to the Hospital, but it was too late. The Pneumonia had spread infection to his organs, Doctors tried to save him, but didn't administer Detox and instead used Antibotics, which allowed the body to produce natural anti body toxins which shut his body down. He lapsed into a Coma, and died. On The Early Morning Hours of Wednesday May 16,1990 in NYC.

If I had a time machine I would get him to a hospital before it was too late. He said he didn’t want to bother anyone, but I would tell him that he brightened up the world and if he died everything would go dark, that it doesn’t matter if he’s bothering anyone by going to the hospital because the world needs Jim Henson. I guess I daydream too much but I really wish he was still alive.
I feel you bro.
God, Jim Henson was such a good person, I miss him so much. You made everyones childhood a little brighter :) rest in peace Jim.
The most interesting thing I find about this is that it was supposed to be the lead in to The Muppets moving to Disney (which was a Henson goal, he was already thinking about making sure the Muppets out lived him at that point). His death, unfortunately, triggered events which let the franchise languish for over a decade. It's good to see them finally recovering, and getting back to being a household name. Jim would be proud.
At first I was like, "Why did Jim clash with Kevin... and who's Kevin? Then I was like, "Ohhhh... 'Kevin Clash'. Ha.

pinkflower7783 Having been born in October of 1982, I feel privileged to have gotten to see Jim Henson perform as Ernie on Sesame Street and as Kermit The Frog many times via the Muppet show and the Muppet movies. Also I think that Steve Whitmire is doing a great job as both Kermit and Ernie, ever since I first heard him perform in The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), and on Sesame Street beginning in 1993.

Miss you Jim Henson rip
This interview was on the evening of Friday, May 4, 1990 in Los Angeles. Eleven days and a few hours alter, Jim Henson was dead of pneumonic streptococcus A bacteria infection. At the time of this interview, Henson had strep throat, but did not have the bacterial infection. This infection occurred at some time on May 11 or early May 12, and some believe that Henson was weakened by strep throat and overwork, and this made him more vulnerable to the infection. This and the fact that Henson did not finally seek medical help until the morning of May 15 led to his death at 1:21 a.m. EST on May 16. By the time he agreed to go to the hospital, it was too late for doctors to save him. How and why Henson acquired the streptococcus A bacteria is a mystery to this day. This May 4 performance by Henson is lackluster and not all that funny; Kevin Clash is the one who carries this interview. Henson's performance is clearly off, as is his voice, no doubt because he was not feeling well. It is sad and painful to watch this interview, knowing what Jim Henson would face in the next eleven days.
Yeah, I read that Jim did not want to go to the hospital because he didn't want to be a bother to anybody. And by the time he did agree, it was too late. Very very sad. Very difficult to watch this interview.
He had Walking Pneumonia. He had grown up Christian Scientist so he was reluctant to get treatment.

Nojiko Tangerine Lady He had strep throat which quickly spread throughout his body. It's otherwise known as Toxic Shock Syndrome. It developed into pneumonia and eventually spread to his other organs which all shut down until he died. If he would have gotten treated sooner, he would have survived. By the time he got treatment for the infection, it was too late because it had turned into toxins by that point and he couldn't be saved. A very unselfish man to the end, so unselfish that he lost his life rather than burden anyone. Rest in Peace, Jim. You are incredibly loved and missed. Thanks for everything. 😭😢

He probably thought it was just a sore throat and that it would go away. Poor guy.

John Ylitalo Yea, but when you realize that his legacy still lives on forever through his movies and television shows, it eases the pain a little. Instead of doing this interview, he should have been at home resting. His immune system was in no shape to fight the infection he got because he never stopped. He constantly pushed himself even when he was sick. It is apparent that he had no idea how sick he was. As soon as he started feeling ill he should have stopped whatever he was working on and gave himself time to rest and heal. He could have beaten his illness if his body was not so weakened by stress and overwork. Even when he was coughing up blood near the end he refused to go to the hospital. It was only when the pain became too strong to ignore he finally gave in and sought medical treatment. It was sadly too late. Serious infections require immediate medical attention. I don't know how long he had the infection but at some point, he should have realized it was getting worse, not better. Henson's death is tragic because it could have been avoided.
He thought it was just a cold. It was probably mild back then before it worsened.
I'm having PTSD flashbacks of Walt Disney's death...We were not ready for them to see them die so soon....
