Having just got a Highlander coming from a 2010 vehicle these are some of the little things I'm missing from my old car. I frequently had my old car running (heat or AC) and wanting to have the door locked. Usually, it's because I'm sitting in the vehicle with my kid waiting for someone i.e. my wife running into a store for 5 or 10 mins. Locking the door was a habit for safety reasons. Perhaps I was in a semi sketchy area and didn't want someone unexpectedly just coming and opening my door. Then when my wife or whomever would return I'll unlock the door for them. Whatever, the case there are many reasons why someone might want to do it though I can understand and see the argument that well the smart key is in the car and this is a safety mechanism so you don't lock your key in the car, fair point. Then, at the very least you should be able to lock the car while running if it detects the key is outside the car.
Thanks for the video! I should’ve realized that I could do this but I gave up trying to find out how lol. It sucks we have to do so many steps but at least we found something that work😆
I don't understand why carmakers don't design it so the vehicle will not go into gear unless the key fob is inside the vehicle. I have an F150 and reprogrammed to do just that. Prior to me reprogramming it, anyone could take it without the fob in their possession. A simple example, I get out at a community mailbox to get my mail. If I leave the car running, anyone can take put it in gear and take it. It doesn't make sense to me that it is this way.
Seriously if they can make proximity keys for the outside and know the difference that your key is inside so if someone couldn’t press your button from the outside while you have your key , then they should be able to just disable drive mode unless the cars was in proximity of inside the vehicle, they know better but I’m sure they get more sales after someone steals the vehicle from a consumer and gets replaced by insurance
My 2016 Ford edge I could do that go inside leave the car shut the door use the key fob though lock it not sure on Toyota yet I plan on buying a 24 Toyota Camry this month so don’t have it yet
I just purchased a 2016 Highlander and have never had push start/smart key before. When I stop to get gas, I always used to remove the key and lock my car doors while pumping so no one could open the passenger's side and grab my purse. With this Highlander, I can't figure out how to keep someone from using the smart key unlocking on the passenger side when I'm standing on the driver's side pumping gas. This trick didn't work for me with the car shut off. Is there anyway to disable the passenger side smart key unlock?
I deliver for Door Dash. So often I only need 10-20 seconds to run up and drop an order off and I don't want the wear and tear on my starter from turning it off for such a short period of time. 2014 Honda Accord, and unable to lock it while running up to the door. But I don't want that hassle of having to pull the physical key out each time. That'll turn a 10-20 second thing into a 30-40 second event at every drop off, which adds up. They should just let us lock the door normally, I guarantee this has inconvenienced many times more people than it's "helped".
if you hit the unlock button on the vehicle it will begin to count down from what it is set to, default is 60 seconds. if you dont open the door by then it will relock. if you open the door it will remain unlocked
LOL speaking of remote start, DONT even try to promote that, when you could have locked the door in 1 second but used the remote or toyota app to lock the door that would take you up to 1-5 minutes depending on if you are under wifi or not. Even if you are under a very fast wifi(which in most cases you wont be under wifi because thats the point of remote) the app takes SUPER long to update status and make changes like lock/unlock doors, remote engine start, refresh vehicle status like the door. Only thing I find useful without waiting is the notification because I sometimes forget to lock my car door also when I need to go somewhere or have class in the winter/spring morning where my car is literally frozen up with layer of ice I could remotely start the vehicle and defrost it.
doesnt work on a 2022 Civic .I tried this and I could not unlock it after , I was locked out of my own car with the engine running eventhough I had the fob !!! I know it sounds crazy but that is what happened .Then after about 20 mins the car shut off on its own and all the doors unlocked .I was just about to call the auto club to unlock it .can somone explain how that happened ?
This could easly be fixed if the car just shut the engine of if it didnt have the signal from the remote control beeing in the car while you switches from parked mode.
Had a 2007 Nissan altima that I uses to let run while the doors were locked... this is the dumbest thing ever, why can't I use my fob to lock my doors while the car is running... toyota needs to have an option to enable this feature
Im a little confused. I understand this can be used to lock the door with the vehicle running. But can it actually be used to pen the door without killing the engine after you did a remote start? You mention that a couple of times but don’t explain it. Do I need to lock the door with the key too? Or just unlock it?
I tried this with a 4runner I just purchased when I walk away from vehicle it start beeping and the info screen tell me to shut off vehicle Is there away to keep it from beeping while I run back inside to fix my coffee for my commute

I never got why smart key systems never let you lock the car when it’s running and when you step outside with the fob in hand, the car beeps, meaning the car KNOWS the key is outside the vehicle
I did this with my Subaru and it activated anti-theft mode where even the manual key wouldn’t work to open the car. Has anyone else had this problem and come up with a solution to prevent the car from doing this?
I wouldn't say most probably 50% have the remote connect app based system. If you choose not to renew that system after the 1st year trial period ends for $80 per year or $8 per month then the remote start shuts off including from the key fob. This answer is correct in that case as well.
@@stevenwelchtoyota wait, so if I don't renew, the remote start, even from the fob won't work? ummm, thats illegal. I paid for "remote start". its in my feature list on the window sticker. if they take that away from the key fob because I don't renew an app subscription, I will be contacting my states AG.
@@chubbysumo2230 they used to have to have the remote connect active. Now depending on the vehicle it will remain active for either 3 or 10 years depending on the radio system.

When I come back I can just open the door with the handle or press unlock on the key fob. Renting a RAV4 Prime for the weekend and was trying to figure out how to keep the car warmed up LOL
Just get out with the car running and the driver window open. Close the door, lean in and lock door and then close window with window button. 60 second video - you are welcome
I have a 2016 toyota Scion IA and for some reason nothing works i've tried everyway and the only success i've had is with taking the battery out of my push to start key fob and only using the key and fob magnet to start my car. and stupid design: if my cars running and i throw the fob out the window or somthing i can drive as far as i want, as long as the car was already started 🤣 such a stupid car
LOL he says maybe you want to leave someone in the car. So why would you go through this process to lock the car and leave the climate control on? Couldn't you just leave the key with the person left in the car and THEY can lock the doors?

4) step outside of the vehicle w/ the smart key in hand

Only thing I find useful without waiting is the notification because I sometimes forget to lock my car door also when I need to go somewhere or have class in the winter/spring morning where my car is literally frozen up with layer of ice I could remotely start the vehicle and defrost it.
most times it works fast. I use it alot. Plus you can use the key fob of you prefer
is this for all vehicles? I have a 2016 honda crv
It works for Toyota should be similar on others
Show us how to do this on a 2022 Volkswagen Taos SEL
I would have to wait until i see one
doesnt work on a 2022 Civic .I tried this and I could not unlock it after , I was locked out of my own car with the engine running eventhough I had the fob !!! I know it sounds crazy but that is what happened .Then after about 20 mins the car shut off on its own and all the doors unlocked .I was just about to call the auto club to unlock it .can somone explain how that happened ?
Very helpful video! Thank you!
Happy to help
This could easly be fixed if the car just shut the engine of if it didnt have the signal from the remote control beeing in the car while you switches from parked mode.
i agree. the new tundra will have the ability to stay running
I guess there's no way to do this if you have no physical key? I have a 2022 Corolla Cross. It came with two key fobs but no actual key
Will this work with push button start vehicles or just remote start?
Push button. The remote start works differently
@@stevenwelchtoyota thank you, my mistake! Yes it worked perfectly on my Honda Odyssey. Thank you for this info!

Hi can you leave key fob in car and use the spare key fob to lock when outside
Yes but why?
Many thanks for your helpful videos Steven 👍👍👍
Glad you like them!
Thanks, but it sucks when I’m just trying to make a quick stop.
Had a 2007 Nissan altima that I uses to let run while the doors were locked... this is the dumbest thing ever, why can't I use my fob to lock my doors while the car is running... toyota needs to have an option to enable this feature
Thanks for sharing. Who knows what may come down the pipe
Thanks for the info bro.. that’s my problem too in my 4 runner specially now it’s winter time. 👍👍👋👋
Glad to help
I will give it a try, I have an older toyota that I am using to delivery foods. I need to keep it running when I grab food from restaurants.
You can do it!
Im a little confused. I understand this can be used to lock the door with the vehicle running. But can it actually be used to pen the door without killing the engine after you did a remote start? You mention that a couple of times but don’t explain it. Do I need to lock the door with the key too? Or just unlock it?
remote start is different
I tried this with a 4runner I just purchased when I walk away from vehicle it start beeping and the info screen tell me to shut off vehicle
Is there away to keep it from beeping while I run back inside to fix my coffee for my commute
It's meant to alert you that it's running without the key
If you use the key to lock the car, will it run indefinitely or will it automatically shut off after a certain length of time?
if you do it that way it will go till the gas runs out
@@stevenwelchtoyota why not just start it with the remote start again once you get out? my 2020 highlander platinum, if you 2tap+1hold on the lock button triggers the remote start. can also be done from the app(but more cumbersome). that way it can't be stolen either if the windows are smashed. is the remote start not an included feature of all the new toyotas, or is that something that is on a certain feature package?
@@chubbysumo2230 I have a 2021 Tacoma and could not start it with the fob, the salesman said it would work, but no one at the dealer could make it happen...
@@chubbysumo2230 that only works if you have the audio upgrade package for the highlander or any toyota for that matter (JBL System in this case)
@chubbysumo2230 since you have the platinum, it comes with that upgrade by default but YES that feature is super helpful, I have the XSE but it came with the JBL upgrade
This would have worked perfect but my Kia doesn’t have the manual lock on the front doors. Just the push button. Darn!
you should trade out of the kia
Fyi, Toyota has an app you can use to start the car from practically anywhere. My girlfriend has it for hers and she was able to start the car from approximately 8.6 miles away.
Its remote connect. You can start it from anywhere you have a phone signal
Is very dumb, my infinity QX60, f150 limited, And my 2017 Pacifica all let me lock the door when engine is running, is 19 degree outside and snowing, I just go inside my house few minutes and want keep engine running but it won't let me lock the door
Thank you. This is very helpful. But if you make it shorter.
I try to make it as understandable as possible. Several people on my earlier videos said I was hard to follow cause I went too fast.
I never got why smart key systems never let you lock the car when it’s running and when you step outside with the fob in hand, the car beeps, meaning the car KNOWS the key is outside the vehicle
i can agree
Life saver! Thank you

I did this with my Subaru and it activated anti-theft mode where even the manual key wouldn’t work to open the car. Has anyone else had this problem and come up with a solution to prevent the car from doing this?
Doesn't most new Toyotas have remote start using the key fob?
Skip to 3:08 if you don't care about the warning. Was literally waiting 3 minutes with my car running to find out.
Always have to have the disclaimer
@@stevenwelchtoyota Unless your car has a nearly dead battery and it's 30 degrees out and you desperately need to find out. I appreciate you posting, but a warning of "if you do this your car could be stolen" takes less then 10 seconds to say.
Thanks so much for this info.

This is useful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Nicely done!

Thank you. Want to keep car running while dogs in car. This solved it. Stupid Toyota doesn’t let us do this in an easier fashion.

This freaked me out today but opposite problem. I left my car running to throw out some trash. I had my keys on me. My dog locked the car stepping on the button. Thankfully the window was down. The fob wouldn't unlock door. Luckily I could reach in. Seems stupid.
Pets can cause issues lol
So dumb. I have a 2013 Cmax hybrid. If I want to leave it running while going shopping or grabbing lunch, because I live in the desert where it's 100° most days, I just get out of the car close the door and press lock on my key fob. When I come back I can just open the door with the handle or press unlock on the key fob.
Renting a RAV4 Prime for the weekend and was trying to figure out how to keep the car warmed up LOL
