  • Windy day with the fly rod. Went out with a couple friends to sight fish some redfish in Delacroix, Louisiana and had a little bit of success despite the conditions.

Try and order some seadeck alternatives off of Amazon and place it around the sides on the canoe where you rest your paddle. I had the same issue with my paddle making all sorts of noise on my paddle board.

The fish you scared up at 7:20 wasn't spooked by the fly hitting the water. It spooked the moment you raised the rod for your first back cast. You were way too close. You need to take a moment to actually stop the canoe before you pick up the rod. By the time you had the rod up, you were right on top of the fish. Cast from farther away, learn to keep the fly in the air rather than slapping it down on the fore cast, and learn to cast sidearm.

Definitely agree, Mike. Most of my experience has been conventional where one good cast sight fishing and you're good to go. Had a couple more instances this day where I was just too close and spooked the fish.

Awesome job and always a learning experience! Did you use Sweetwater to launch and hop a levee somewhere?

    • @robthefisherman8209
      @robthefisherman8209  2 роки тому

There's a pump station down there that provides direct access to carry over the levee, but I'm not sure how long it will be useable. There are some big restoration projects happening between Reggio and Delacroix.

@@robthefisherman8209 Thanks! I looked at Google maps and was able to find it. I saw a bunch of fish, hooked up to one but didn't set the hook good enough. I will try that area again some day.

Yo Rob, I enjoyed the video! I also fly fish out of a canoe and yesterday I struck out on our redfish over here in SC (no UA-cam video that day!) but then I'm sort of new to redfish. I do find myself getting too close too but sometimes they just show up out of nowhere with no indication they were there. Then again, that's why we hunt them with a fly rod, if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doing. Nice fish! You Louisiana boyz got lots of and really big reds down there. Color me Jealous Green. Best of luck on your channel!

Thanks! Hoping to get some more content out soon. They do often appear out of nowhere, but I've had luck dropping lures right in front of them (cane pole style) as well.

What kind of canoe is that? Looks like a tandem canoe but it seems to work well fishing it solo. Your crushing it by the way, well done.

It's an Old Town Guide 147. Perfect size for solo fishing and also great as a vessel for duck and deer hunting.

Rob, don't give up on the fly rod! You will get better and better in the wind! This video would have been just like hundreds of others with conventional gear. I enjoyed it even with the missed fish. Good luck. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! Definitely haven't given up on the fly rod. Need to make sure I have the camera out with me again. The wind down here in South Louisiana can definitely mess with the fly fishing

Well I found this vid because I wanted to find out the advantages of using a canoe for fly fishing , It looked like you were sneaking up on em real good and even to close before you could a shot at them , it’s been awhile since you did this video how’s the canoe working out for you ? I’m real close to buying one in the next couple of days I’ll be fishing the flats and mangroves in west central Florida and I thinking fly fishing is easier out of a canoe than a kayak, 🤔

Hey Dave! I was definitely getting too close and that was a big takeaway from the vid and feedback that I got. I still prefer it for fly fishing when I'm not having to travel large distances. I also have a Hobie Outback and there are just too many things for the fly line to get caught on. I found the canoe on Facebook Marketplace for $250. Well worth picking up one for cheap to have in addition to a kayak. Ideal scenario: throw a trolling motor on the canoe to get you to where you want to be and then pull it up to paddle around.

@@robthefisherman8209 , hey rob thanks for the reply , well here’s what I found out , I borrowed a friends canoe just to see how it would work out for me , #1 - ez of transport, it was a pain in the butt getting it on an off by myself, #2 I’m and old fart with a bad foot so stability was not good , # 3 -it was great for getting into skinny water and if you watch what your doing not banging around you can get up close on fish , #4 unless you’re going to fish an area close to we’re you put in you need to have a trolling motor or spend a lot of time paddling, and not fishing, ! So I went with plan B - project micro skiff ! After searching I found an 11’ fiberglass three seat V Hull fishing skiff with a trailer for $250 bucks , cheap ! Yes but it needs work , needs the transom wood a fiberglass replaced , and of course I want to add a casting platform to the bow , and I already got a trolling motor from a goodwill store , so now I’m hunting for a 9.9 hp outboard, it can still be rowed , trolled, or motored , it’s lightweight, weighs about 250 lbs so far without the new casting platform, but it will be easy to back in and launch, 👊🏼👍🏼

@@davescheer5038 you bring up an excellent point in regards to the ease of transport. I have the good fortune of being able to fit mine in the bed of my truck without the need of a bed extender, so it just slides right on in. I have had to car top it previously both on my partner's crossover SUV and on top of my truck, neither of which I felt comfortable doing on my own whilst also maintaining the condition of the vehicle's clear coat, haha

Old town guide 147. Light, big enough for two people, and manageable for one. Have fished, duck hunted, and deer hunted from it and even brought it to Texas for a trip down the San Marcos river.

It's a 9' 8wt TFO BVK. Shopped for a while before finding a guy who was selling it. It was his backup rod and had never been used. Threw in the reel and some flies.
