In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community:
    • I’ve heard you’ve written an amazing book called, “The Cancer Code.” I haven’t read it yet, but wanted to hear your thoughts on broccolini being an anti-cancer food. I understand it contains Sulforaphane, Indole-3-carbinol (I3C), Glucosinolates, Vitamin C, and fiber. Should I concentrate on cruciferous vegetables, like broccolini, or just work on getting a balanced diet? What are your thoughts? [02:14]
    • I have a little confusion about the difference between taking metformin and injecting insulin. From what I've read in your books it's that insulin is going to make type 2 diabetes worse in the long run. I already know that that’s not the answer to reverse type two diabetes and I’m not taking either one. Like insulin, will metformin also be detrimental to treat T2D or is there a difference between one and the other - and why, please? [05:27]
    • What do they mean by 'immunoreactive insulin'? [12:06]
    • Does the liver respond negatively to the ingestion of supplements? In other words, do the supplements cause any changes in my insulin? [14:52]
    • I started TRE (beginning Jan this year) at about 135 pounds and am now doing 24-hour fasts with OMAD and 2MAD. I have completed a 42-hour fast and will probably try another one this week. I am eating whole foods. Avocados are my miracle!!! I do not snack between meals. My body is still releasing weight with what I am doing now and I feel I have another 5 pounds to go. How will I know when to stop shedding the weight? [18:13]
    • Can you clarify the role of physical activity and exercise in weight loss? In The Obesity Code, you shared that a number of rigorous clinical trials demonstrate that exercise contributes minimally, if at all, to weight loss. However, zone 2 exercise is promoted for its'fat burnin' benefits. I plan to continue exercising for its health-promoting benefits but I would really like to hear your take on the extent to which it can assist with weight loss, and what exercise types you recommend for weight loss. [21:56]
    • On non-fasting days, what is Dr. Fung’s chosen style of eating? [29:46]

Good to hear from Dr. Fung😊.
I try to stick with whole foods, and I love beans, which are carb heavy but also high in fiber . I figure they are a good substitute for eating bread and processed snack food. Lots of times I eat taco meat, black beans, salsa and veggies. Little or no rice, and no taco shells. Very filling and the net carbs for the omad are low.

Loved the summary at the end, eating more home cooked food and spacing eating has really benefitted my health and waistline.

One of my many questions is something that the Doc has spoken to a little bit in another YT vid. It is about knowing when you are fasting too much. From what I can tell, if there are stories about people fasting for over one hundred days, then there really is no way to over fast unless you simply do not have the body fat.
I like fasting for many different things. There really is a long list of very significant life quality factors that fasting can increase and possibly introduce. So I am a big fan of the challenges. It is not something you can do right out of the gates without challenges. I am getting to the point where I am within ten pounds of my lowest possible healthy weight if I still want to be active and toned. This is totally foreign territory for me basically since I was a toddler in the seventies. I have had SAD, sugary, starchy diet disease since puberty basically. I started down this path a little over a year ago simply by deciding to take extra virgin olive oil, one or two oz's a day. one before breakfast and one before lunch. It added good fat and curbed the cravings big time. Coupled with serious walking in the warm Minnesota months. I didn't get into keto/fasting until a couple months ago. Since then however, I noticed that the weight I was losing was different somehow. I noticed how the loose skin became much more noticeable. I guess the fasting is a major factor, but I think getting serious about sugar and processed carb cutting is also huge.
Started at 220, now at 160. 5'11". I have health problems. I am learning that the medical industrial complex may be against me when it comes to "total" cholesterol and getting off statins. I am coming to learn that the fatty liver test may allow a fatty liver to be considered "normal". Even though my HDL crawled up to 50, after being below 40, it is still too low.
Major changes that I have seen is the weight, losing 2.5 sizes around waist, trygs came way down and HDL went up. I am weaning myself off, actually I have weaned myself off of statins and I have informed the doc. LDL's went up, but I am not worried. From what I hear from objective voices online, it is not that big of a deal especially in comparison to the benefits of the improved factors.

The ldl going up is unhealthy in the context of inflammation. Of your triglycerides are low ie less than 100, and your hdl higher, the higher ldl doesn't seem to be pathogenic.

@@iss8504 thank you. I gather you mean that LdL is not bad per se when inflammation is not present and high, or not well controlled triglycerides is a marker of inflammation.
