Glad I clicked on you from THE ARMED show. I saw Waits live twice and meeting him is still my most asked about tale. I don't even have to make the fish any more big.
And WHAT AN AMAZING BAND under the musical direction of David Coulter (musical saw, percussions, banjo...) : Steve Nieve (keyboards), Thomas Bloch (ondes Martenot, glass harmonica, cristal Baschet), Dave Okumu (guitar), Terry Edwards (winds, guitar, percussion), Tom Herbert (bass) and Seb Rochford (drums) !!!! Encore...
@theondes I completely agree! They were too far back on the stage from where I was seated to get them on film, but I was especially impressed with Terry Edwards and Seb Rochford - brilliant stuff from all of them though.
She was the highlight of the evening for me. Can't find a video of her version of "Downtown Train" though, which is a shame - I thought that was her best performance.
@hildathenoo you don't seem to realize how new the phenomenon of the singer-songwriter is. go back even just 40 years and most of the biggest touring acts in the world were doing standards and old blues covers. also, yeah, this was a waits tribute show. and lots of male artists do covers too, by the way. it's not an exclusively female activity.
@pnoplyr14 No it's definitely on her ring finger. But she mentions becoming "someone's elderly spinster aunt" in an article published on the LA Times blog yesterday.
Impulse43211, the great thing about music is to each their own. If everyone liked the same thing the world would be a fantastic bore. I've also seen some bad Waits covers. I appreciate your comments and I enjoy intelligent tete a tete, so thank you.
@hildathenoo She has two albums out of stunning original material. This was a special even to honor Waits- that's the only reason she (and everyone else there) was playing a cover.
Don't know if it was intentional (and if it was, it wasn't a very good idea), or just a problem with the sound setup, but whenever the music picks up, her voice is completely drowned out. Would have been a good cover otherwise, I think - now it's kinda compromized by the sound setup.
@hildathenoo every artist does a cover now and then! anna calvi and st. vincent both have full albums of self-written material, which is more than we can say for most mainstream artists at this point. :(
So Bieber is art? Is a crucifix in a glass of piss art? I saw an elephant turd at the Tate in london with yarn pressed into the top of it. It was titled sh#$head. Pretty funny but is it art? Who decides? You? Me? Them? I have found that if you can talk the talk and quote the right people you can call anything art. However I DO very much appreciate the discussion and I thank you for your comments. This is what makes art and music fun to talk about and share with people. You're a great advocate.
Great thing about art and music is that not everyone likes everything. That would be boring. And in my OPINION not all music is art. I do NOT think that Justin Bieber is art, that is my opinion and I'm sticking to it. I also believe that there are people out there that are simply unoriginal hacks. Again, my opinion. If I crap on a pie tin and quote Yoko Ono, is that art? You tell me professor.
In my opinion, the song turns around the whole idea - Waits' version is loose and clunky from the start, when this cover has the usual indie-chick-stylings written all over: turning freedom into control, changing the barebone groove into a silent drum to climax the build at the end. Even though it is interesting to see a blues song about roughhousing around played in such a different setting, I don't really care for this one. Imo it could've been done differently, this is a bit too predictable.
let's face it, pretty is pretty, and crap is crap. This is pretty much crap. I would have thought this was recorded at The Walker Art Center in Mpls, Mn. They're great at displaying crap under the guise of "art".
She was the highlight of the whole evening. Amazing
Awesome performances all round. Thank u for sharing. Magic night.
Thank you! loved it!
One of my favorite songs just got better
The best thing I've ever seen.
This is my favorite video on all of the internet.
I love the dramatic lighting and darkness of the song. I'm going to try and see her with David Byrne when they come around!
Glad I clicked on you from THE ARMED show. I saw Waits live twice and meeting him is still my most asked about tale. I don't even have to make the fish any more big.
This is really cool! I would have liked to have seen this live, it must have been intense.
wow Annie!!!
Bone-chillingly beautiful. Like St. Vincent herself
wish i could hear a recording form the mixing board of this!
Epic!!

Lovely evening
I think Tim Waits would approve!
wow ...
Rock and Roll will NEVER die:-) Most impressive young lady!!!!!

This song confused me for a long time, until I found out Mariah referred to a car, not a woman.
Fuck yeah.
She was the highlight of the evening for me. Can't find a video of her version of "Downtown Train" though, which is a shame - I thought that was her best performance.
This was the coolest and sexiest thing i have ever seen. Oh my fucking god.

St Vincent was the highlight of the evening. Stucky was entertaining but she murdered the songs she sung.
@pnoplyr14 No it's definitely on her ring finger. But she mentions becoming "someone's elderly spinster aunt" in an article published on the LA Times blog yesterday.

i think tom waits would dig this.
GIRL POWER!
Annie you rock everyone's underwear!

Cool vibe and great song Annie! Check out Hellbeast of The Night covering Tom's new song "Bad As Me' on their UA-cam page.
Hit the heels ' me lady :; the ol hoochies out for my headding :; Kool Pete the hiverest moonshiney man
I also know different words
@ars3nalpromo I guess John finally accepted her offer. ;)
The guitar is a magical instrument,it attracts mosquitoes into the trap or scare them?It is better will force mosquitoes to dance to death !
what do you mean the guise of art? All music is art, thats a given. No one tries to be art, that would be dumb.
Who else got chills....
I'm sure that one of the 371 likes was voted by Tom Waits himself.
Annie: What do you believe in?
Me: God.
Annie: Who in your God?
Me: You.
Annie: Is this reality or just another façade?

Needed better sound equipment.
A triumph of ego over ability
Just because somethign is art doesnt mean its good. There is a lot of bad art in the world. Art isnt some signifier of quality.
:/

I rather stick to the original
I like when performers cover songs, change it and make it their own. I didn't like this.
fed up of these girls doin covers, what happened to writers, original artists ? is it just the trend ? anna calvi etc...
Sorry doesn't do it for me. Wish it would have been PJ Harvey instead.
