What I don't feel is appreciated enough - Snarky Puppy is mainly about improvisation. None of them is playing by notes. they just agreed on a theme and maybe some boundaries. But within those, it's just telepathy. Yes, there are some great solos in there. But what really blows me away is how tight that horn section is. What is this - some Borg-like mind melt ? How can they be so accentuated and tight at that tempo ? Yes, Corey Henry does some great keyboard solo in this song. But listen to that horn section!
Yes. Michael League, band leader and bassist, "composed" most of the songs, which was mainly agreeing on theme, breaks, time signatures, etc., and he left each section of the band come up with its own filling, per se. And the musicians in those sections would agree on what to play and rehearse those parts, and then the entire band would rehearse, being careful that no single part of the band would interfere with another part for their own benefit. No one reads any music. It's all memorized.
@@bryceb8331 As far as improv solo, it's up there but there was a guy named Chick Corea who had a big influence on Corey Henry. You can look here on UA-cam and see them playing together. The Teacher and the Student. Check out Chicks solo on Romantic Warrior live ua-cam.com/video/nZcTE5ZVIVI/v-deo.html
I've probably watched this over a 100 times, it's still as entertaining as the first time I saw it. You can find every track from this session on video, they're all like this. The whole band was on fire, on fire.
Spot on. Still love watching original SP video AND reactors jamming with it. But lately I’m obsessed with a slightly different kind of live “in the moment” composition and performance: Marc Rebellit and Harry Mack
I have also watched/listened to this so many times. That’s the thing about good music. It’s timeless and will still sound fresh when your grand children listen to it!
I am not sure if someone said this before but the version on Spotify IS THIS version. THIS is the studio version. They recorded the "studio" version like this. The studio recording IS the video recording and vice versa. I don't know how else to explain it. THIS IS IT :)
Cory Henry's keyboard solo can only be described by one word: historic. It is the new standard of greatness against which all other solos will now be compared. Now, consider that the drummer, Larnell Lewis, was a stand-in. The regular drummer had a family emergency and Larnell got called in 24 hours prior to the recording sessions and learned all the songs on the plane overnight! Also, the other keyboardist who just smiles and shakes his head has not one, not two, but SIX Grammies to his name!
The first time I saw this version of Lingus I was floored at how "in the moment" they were. For any musician, that is the holy grail..to be so well rehearsed that your music literally *plays you*... For improvisational musicians it is where they seek to exist.. in the moment, but unlike most other forms of music, improvisational musicians are literally conversing in the moment.... and its amazing to see when it happens sooooo fluidly.
Larnell Lewis (the drummer) learned this whole set on a 7 hour flight to get to this gig. Snarky's other drummer (Sput) couldn't make it. So Snarky called Larnell last minute. He's been with the band since then. Larnell is an AMAZING drummer!!! I mean... AMAZING!!!! Thank y'all so much for sharing this reaction with us (ME)!! When you thanked Lex for sharing this gift with you... yeah, I broke down and CRIED some more!!!
I CRIED MY FREAKIN' EYES OUT when I first heard/saw this. I don't know how to explain it other than to say, that music MOVED me to a level of happiness I hadn't experienced before. These people are AMAZING musicians!!!!
Go watch the UA-cam video where they talk about this studio album... The drummer never played this tunes before this, hopped on a plane to the Netherlands, and learned all of it in 7 hours in his head on the flight. As for the keyboard player that took his head seat off, he's won 4 grammy's on his own. Just to out in perspective of how talented this group is.
The reason the other keyboardist Shaun Martin was shaking his head like "I'm outta here!!" during Cory Henry's keyboard solo is because this video was the second take of the same song.....and on the first take, Cory Henry's solo was completely different than the one he improvised on the second take.
There's at least two other versions of his solos on youtube. Each very different than the others. It's like watching Lingus for the first time a couple more times!
The keyboards of Cory Henry are fantastic, but the other musicians are doing incredible things too. The brief sax solo is nutz and as a former trumpeter I just can't believe how those guys nail their parts. I have Snarky Puppy CDs and have watched all the videos. There are 10 more songs just as good waiting in the wings.
I love your reactions. Shofukan is my favorite of this session. I know you've already reacted to the album version. My favorite trumpet solo of all time is on that track. This band gives me life and I'm not a huge jazz fan. They inject dopamine like no other group of musicians for me
I completely agree with you! However, in many, many of these Snarky Puppy videos, people kept mentioning a group called "Dirty Loops." I kept ignoring those comments because in my eyes, no one could top Snarky Puppy but one day, I clicked on a Dirty Loops video and now, I can't decide which of the two injects more dopamine into my life! I would LOVE a Snarky Puppy / Dirty Loops collaboration. That would truly, truly be something to behold! ua-cam.com/video/r_GTgpdoCh0/v-deo.html
I don't remember how I first stumbled upon this video and I was previously unfamiliar with Snarky Puppy, but it blew me away on the first view. Not only is a well written song, but all the musicians are monsters with incredible chops and feel. The things that stood out for me were the kick a$$ drumming by Larnell Lewis (who learned the song on the flight to the gig), the perfectly synched "behind the beat" feel of the horn section and of course....the jaw dropping keyboard solo by Cory Henry.
Corey has been playing keyboards since he was 3 in church. He's a legend. That is Stevie Wonder level keyboarding. That is God given talent. Only a given to a small few.
Everyone involved with this exuberant celebration is to be commended. Including you. Over the eons I have found that a good jam session with invariably end in laughter. Love is a collaborative work of art. Thanks for this display and reminder of how people should act toward one another. And how much beauty can be created when we do. Peace and love.
This was pure magic captured on video. So very cool! The musicians here are just so talented. And the pure energy and the interplay of the these guys is off the charts great. Thanks Lex! Loved every minute of this
When the keyboard solo came I totally forgot to see your reactions, I was, again spellbound with it. But even with the keyboard solo, the drummer kept the foundation strong. Then you realize that the drummer learned the song on the flight to do this gig: then you realize how outrageous everyone playing is.
Snarky Puppy is a collective, with around 20 members. The leader and the writer of the songs is the bassist Michael League. He calls the musicians and sees who is available, but they are all fantastic musicians. He does have a core of musicians who turn up to most gigs. The other main drummer of them is Sput, who is great too, but Larnell Lewis is a beast. Like you, I heard this and oh wow. They're calling it nu-jazz, but it sounds like jazz funk to me. And I love it. Steely Dan are and were primarily a studio group. What you're seeing here is a group of people recording an album while performing to an audience. Instead of speakers, the audience wear headphones that are wired to the sound booth. They can do it live, they can do it in the studio.
Top 2 bands for me: Steely Dan (all-time no. 1) and Snarky Puppy. I’ve watched literally about 30+ Lingus reactions and really liked and appreciated yours… especially as you’ve demonstrated your great musical taste during your Steely Dan-appreciation journey. A few things: (1) Shaun Martin - the keyboardist reacting to Cory - has 6 Grammys: he’s amazing too; (2) Larnell Lewis learned his drum parts for all but two of the album’s songs during his 7 hour flight to the studio in the The Netherlands; (3) unfortunately, I don’t think Cory Henry tours with them now. Love your channel.
For a limited time, and at only a very few locations, Snarky Puppy is opening for Steely Dan on their current tour. I am within less than 300 miles of one of the combined performances, and I am seriously considering making the trip. I mean, I kind of have to, ya know? :-)
Okay. So I gotta say that I am sooooo GLAD that y'all are watching/experiencing the LIVE video of this session. Just seeing the looks of surprise on YOUR faces got me crying!!!!! What's crazy to me is that I KNEW you both would have this reaction!!!! I KNEW IT!!!! There's NO disappointment. Only satisfaction! Please, continue sharing your reactions with us from this WHOLE recording session of this DVD. PLEASE!!!
They are musicians at the top of their game, they enjoy every second that they play no matter where they are and ... best of all ... they are all good buddies. There is so much to know about this particular album and I would recommend that you watch the short UA-cam doco about the making of it, Michael League, bass player, composer and 'leader' ( "some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them" as Shakespeare said) is the impish motivating force behind the band and you won't believe the prep that kinda happened prior to this gig happening :) Thanks guys I've been waiting for this since you did Shofukan and you didn't disappoint :)
I missed YES on the "Talk" tour in Los Angeles, and they also provided headphones. May have been the 1st to do that, or at the very least, for an Arena! Love to see Snarky in a small venue with headphones and with the ambient space :D.
That's actually heartwarming, but that's not the real reason, the real reason is they knew they were going to record this album and release it on DVD as well and that's the only way to do it with audience, because it they had live speakers, it could have created more and more problems for the engineering crew and I think it might not have been possible because the brass and the drums are naturally louder and would bleed into the mix. Hence : No speakers for the audience. Or maybe there are no speakers at all in this space
So glad you posted this reaction. I watch this video at least once/week. You’re right, you do get a rush listening to this. ALSO, I saw Steely Dan on two consecutive nights a few months ago in NJ. The boys did the Aja album one night plus some other hits and the other night was sort of a greatest hits set with some deep cuts thrown in. Here’s what I can say about the shows. Donald does not sound like he once did and yes he is getting up there in age, and Walter Becker was missed. The back up singers were great and picked up some of the slack for Donald. The band was tight as hell with the great guitarist Jon Herington keeping things on an even keel. The standout to me in almost every song on both evenings was the drummer, Keith Carlock. He is a beast and well worth seeing. I’m jealous, you’ll be seeing Snarky Puppy. They were not the opening act a few months ago so SD must be rotating various acts as openers. I’m sure you’ll have a great time and please give us all a concert review. 😄
I've been wondering when you two were going to get to this song. I saw Snarky Puppy in NYC a few years back. If you ever get the chance they do not disappoint. A room full of killer musicians
I'm going to that Steely Dan concert where Snarky Puppy is opening for them in Tinley Park, Illinois, on Father's day! Truth be told, I'm only going for Snarky Puppy! 😁
Interesting; Somewhere between Steely Dan and Chicago, for the modern day....Must admit it's better than I was expecting given that interesting band name....PS, also a hint of Weather Report.and Chick Corea.
You two have my exact musical tastes even though I'm probably older than your parents. I discovered snarky puppy in 2015 and they've become my favorite musicians. I've just recently found another band I know you'd love...Dirty Loops. Three amazing musicians from Sweden who sound like Dream Theatre meets Michael Jackson and then joins up with Tower of Power. Check out "work shit out" and " next to you ". Its pop music turned on its head.
This is the studio version, it just has a live studio audience. Also you should watch “Take it!” off their newest album (empire central), it also has the live studio recording on UA-cam.
A few points to mention: 1. Each audience member has a pair of ‘silent disco’ bluetooth headphones which are receiving output from the main mixing board. At least 3 SP albums were recorded this way. 2. Cory Henry, the keyboardist playing that insane solo is no longer with the group and is now heading his own group. 3. Larnell Lewis, the drummer on this album, may or may not be the drummer for SP’s current tour. He was actually a last minute replacement for their regular drummer who didn’t get his passport straightened out and missed the session, which was recorded in the Netherlands. 4. Larnell learned this entire album ON THE PLANE RIDE THERE. 5. The group SP was formed at what was once North Texas State University (since renamed University of North Texas) which has been for decades THE university for jazz musicians. SP are now based in Brooklyn. 6. Consider listening to a more recent album like “Emmigrance” for an example of what SP’s sound is currently like.
If you follow them on Twitter, they're literally recording their latest live/studio album with full audience this week... 2 sessions per day all this week in Dallas at... ooof, $200 a pop. Damn, wish I could afford it! I'm seriously curious as to what the tickets cost to THIS session back in 2014.
Low Spark of High Heeled Boys by Traffic is a stellar Steve Winwood performance. 1971. There’s definitely a Traffic/Blind Faith/Solo career rabbit hole for you here.
When I saw the Steely Dan/Snarky show was going to be near me in Texas I completely freaked out and instantly got tickets! That will be a magical night and will I be thinking of you two when I’m there. Thanks for the video, great reaction! ❤️❤️
You could also check out Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express…Brian is now 82 and still playing live a small venues…he is coming out with a career retrospective…
Cory Henry. An amazing keyboard player. The whole band is amazing, but Larnell Lewis (Drums) is outstanding! Every track is outstanding on this album. My favorite tracks are "What about me" and "Outlier".
Hello from Lone Tree my fellow Coloradans! Love, love, love this reaction 😁 Also loved your reaction to Shofukan! That song was also my first Snarky Puppy jam and I have gone down the rabbit hole with this "We like it here" set of videos and also "Family Dinner" which was recorded with a live, small audience just like this one, however all of the songs feature a guest vocalist! I would really enjoy seeing you both react to some of the "Family Dinner" vids as that shouldn't spoil your upcoming concert (I do not think they play any of those songs in concert as they belong to both SP & the vocalists) Anyway, loving your channel, you guys rock and I'm now a subscriber! Peace an love to you both! 😊
Watch the documentary on the making of this "We Like It Here" video/album to see how it came together. Michael League, the leader/bassist, started composing the songs on Thursday for the concert, which was to be on, uh… Monday. ua-cam.com/video/5p5sEewsYNM/v-deo.html
So much to like about Snarky Puppy! As a keyboard player, I'm most impressed by these parts. There are sections where I felt like the keyboards would burst into flames - literally. It's tricky to try to single out any individual or any instrument, but besides the keyboards, they have, without a doubt, some of the best percussionists around. If you want to hear virtuosity like this with more musicality, I'd recommend Dirty Loops. Start with Coffe Break is Over and go right to Work Shit Out. If these hook you, there's SO much more to explore with the Loops as well as their individual side projects!!!
Have to agree, Work Shit Out by Dirty Loops will a) blow your mind and b) lead to repeated blown minds as you fall down the Loops rabbit hole and listen to everything else of theirs...highly recommended.
You're right, it wasn't/isn't a competition between the musicians. Corey Henry (the soloist) was doing his thing at his appointed time. Shaun Martin (a 5 time GRAMMY AWARD WINNER) was just expressing his own amazment at Corey's musical savvy on the board... which makes that whole scene so awesome!!!
I've got you two to thank for getting me into Snarky Puppy after watching your reaction to Shofukan. I commented at the time that I was aware of the name, but assumed with a name like that, they were a punk or thrash band. I'd recommend Binky from the album Ground Up, it's so euphoric with elements of dance music, watch the live version. We Like It Here is such a difficult album to get hold of though, especially here in the UK. I've been trying ever since I saw your Shofukan reaction, but on most sites it's either sold out or they're asking silly money for it. I saw Steely Dan with Steve Winwood supporting back in 2019 in Birmingham, when they did a short tour of the UK. Stevie was great, Dear Mr Fantasy, John Barleycorn, Can't Find My Way Home, Gimme Some Loving, he did them all. He then came on with the Dan to play keyboards and sing on Pretzel Logic. It was a fantastic night, the only slight disappointment was no Babylon Sisters (which they'd done the previous gig in Manchester), but that's just a minor quibble. If they use the same guitarist Jon Herington, that was with them when I saw them, you'll be blown away.
Finally! I've been anticipating your reaction to Lingus once you reacted to Shofukan. Cory Henry's keyboard solo is on my all-time faves. Larnell Lewis killed it on the drums. Amazingly, he was a last-minute replacement and learned the songs on the plane. Saw Snarky Puppy a few years ago. Love them. Please check out "Something" with Lalah Hathaway.
WHAT a solo on the keys! Impossible. BOTH hands in unison through the most amazingly difficult passages imaginable, then the tightest best funkiest stage band comes in. Energy and improvisation off the charts. Jazz is so great when it 'happens' it happens. In person would be amazing. Is Steely Dan coming to Denver? I thought Snarky had a different opening band.
Steely Dan should be opening for Snarky Puppy! No downgrade on your tickets - at all! I saw Snarky Puppy live at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo Michigan. Because it was a keyboard festival, what did they do? They brought THREE keyboard players! I think there were 16 musicians on stage! It was amazing and afterwards, they were all out at the front door of the venue, for meet and greet conversation and autographs. Make sure you bring posters, LPs or CDs and a sharpie!
Just to add to the Steve Winwood discussion. I am confident that Steve Winwood would absolutely love Snarky Puppy's music. Be surprised if he wasn't a big fan.
Don't let an idiot cloud your mind. Snarky Puppy is one of the best things recently no doubt. The funny thing is, some of what Winwood pioneered with Traffic is a forerunner to stuff like the early fusion, which with his popularity flourished.
Phantastic piece of music, so much fun, to watch these guys on stage. I first heard of Snarky Puppy through you and in the last weeks I watched and listened to several of their concerts in youtube. Last week I watched their 2014 concert at Java Jazz Festival. Sunday night I wrote to Michele about it and told her Lingus was my favourite song of the concert. She wrote back "what is this telepathy ? I was going to do a BMC request ... and then you record this on Monday night. Do we have a telepathy triangle now ? :-) Talking about the "concert exchange": I thought the same as you Nick ... Stevie Winwood is a legend ... but not everybody's taste; I for example don't really like his voice, which he is loved for by many others. So I also would have been glad, when I hear, that Snarky Puppy is playing instead ...definitely more fun. And asking for a refund, because the opener of a concert is exchange, is the opinion of one person - I guess most of your subscribers would prefer to see Snarky Puppy. Fun fact : Nick, I played to you last year a record of Mark Lettieri - Starcatchers ...we both loved it ... it had a great brass part in the end. Well, when I checked infos on Snarky Puppy, I found out, Mark Lettieri is a member, he's one of the 2 guitar players .............AND !!!! They will (hopefully) play in Cologne on Oct 14th ...guess, who's gonna go :-)
Hace muy poco, unos meses descubrí esta banda magnífica que me voló la cabeza y el corazón, desde ese momento la he escuchado sin parar, la calidad musical, los interpretes y los arreglos emocionan. Gracias por hacerlos conocer.
Snarky Puppy is touring with Steely Dan this summer! Great choice here, Lex, I hadn't heard this one and another reason why I enjoy your channel. Rock on!
@@NicknLex I still have my SD tix from 2 years ago. Since that time, Winwood has left the tour and was replaced by Aimee Mann instead of Snarky Puppy at this particular show! Aargh! Especially after seeing your video...these guys are perfect for SD.
One word to describe this is overkill!! Cory's solo is completely out of this world and what's even ore insane is that the drummer Larnell Lewis got a last minute call to do this show and had to learn the songs on a flight between America and Europe!! How is that even possible?!
Alright!!!! Y'all just helped ME understand what I really wanted to say as it pertains to how I felt when I'd first heard/watched this performance. EUPHORIC!!! EUPHORIA!!!! Is there another word for that besides HAPPY? LOL!!!!!
Funny story. I got into Primus in the early 90’s and they blew my mind. at the same time, RUSH was coming to town. That’s a given. All my music friends saw Rush every time they came. But the night before the Rush concert, the radio said “RUSH with special guest Primus. WTF
Wait till you discover the " family dinner " series they do !!!!! They invite guest vocalist and create in my opinion some of the best music anywhere in world

Wow this is why your channel is amazing you’ve just introduced me too something amazing 🙏.
Looks like we’ve found our new Chick Corea 👍
The horns and Larnell together coming out of Cory's solo is just euphoric.

Saw Snarky Puppy open up for Steely Dan a few weeks back here in Phoenix and they tore it down then built it back up again. My new favorite band.

@@scottbrewer9676 Do it! Have fun!
Steely dan and snarky puppy are playing together at the Hollywood bowl and im there as soon as I found out
PLEASE!!!
Jazz just makes everybody else sound like they’re reading instructions. 😊
So very fine! Even my snarky puppy (Toby) loved it. A little Mingus, Chick, Stanley and George Duke.
Jazz fusion on steroids!
Quite so. Reminds me of listening to Auracle, years back.
Love this band because they give audience headphones they can sit in intimate situation and hear everything right off the sound board
Excellent Reaction! Nodding heads and *STANK* faces at appropriate times 🤘🏼🎧 🤟🏼
I've been wondering when you two were going to get to this song. I saw Snarky Puppy in NYC a few years back. If you ever get the chance they do not disappoint. A room full of killer musicians
Exactly!
the guy sat next to Cory Henry is Shaun Martin. A 6x grammy winning keyboard player..Just sat there in amazement like the rest of us
Snarky Puppy is opening for Steely Dan on the first half of their tour. Can’t wait. 😀
Hearing this I think of Dirty Loops!
Three guys from Sweden that have this level of energy! Check them out!
This is the studio version, it just has a live studio audience.
Also you should watch “Take it!” off their newest album (empire central), it also has the live studio recording on UA-cam.
A few points to mention:
Favorite bit is that the keyboardist shaking his head has won multiple Grammys...
This is great. You should hear Snarky Puppy live playing Lingus with the Metropole Orchestra.
Nice reaction! Seeing musicians react to good music is always great.
You could also check out Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express…Brian is now 82 and still playing live a small venues…he is coming out with a career retrospective…
wow! what an amazing treat for the ears!
Cory Henry. An amazing keyboard player. The whole band is amazing, but Larnell Lewis (Drums) is outstanding! Every track is outstanding on this album. My favorite tracks are "What about me" and "Outlier".
Day-um! All i can say. As a Species, we are just now crawling out of the ooze. These guys are proof positive that we are.
And that other keyboard player freaking out over Corey Henry's astonishing performance is 5-time Grammy award winner Shaun Martin...
This is the studio version. Snarky puppy records everything "live"
you loved the emotion in Shofukan, you're gonna love Sleeper
Sleeper and Kite are both great!
It's looks like a damn good concert coming. Snarky Puppy Steely Dan And the amazing Steve Winwood!
In today's busy world, there is always time to watch a Lingus reaction video
Can't get enough of this song and album and reactions to it!!
Looking forward to this. I've watched this live video prob 23 times in the last year
I've got you two to thank for getting me into Snarky Puppy after watching your reaction to Shofukan.
You NEED to check out Dirty loops!!! Same level but in an another way👍
I'm so happy you're seeing the Dan/Snarky concert!
(We'll have to exchange notes! I think you see them a few days before I will!)
thats what I did when I first heard this song...sent it to everyone I knew lol
Steely Dan should be opening for Snarky Puppy! No downgrade on your tickets - at all! I saw Snarky Puppy live at the Gilmore Keyboard Festival in Kalamazoo Michigan. Because it was a keyboard festival, what did they do? They brought THREE keyboard players! I think there were 16 musicians on stage! It was amazing and afterwards, they were all out at the front door of the venue, for meet and greet conversation and autographs. Make sure you bring posters, LPs or CDs and a sharpie!
Omg we CANT WAIT!!!! Thank you!!!
Just Wow😁
Steely Dan and Snarky Puppy are on a tour together this summer.
That was beautiful!!!! It never gets old!
Love your reaction to Snarky Puppy!
Please consider doing "Outlier" and "Don't You Know " featuring Jacob Collier and Big Ed Lee
2:36 that guitar tone is majestic!
This album will be considered the new Legendary Sessions.
Michael League (Bass) is the leader of the group ... you guys need to listen to their Family Dinner sessions (DVD) ...
Snarky Puppy is touring with Steely Dan this summer! Great choice here, Lex, I hadn't heard this one and another reason why I enjoy your channel. Rock on!
We will see them both live-in may. Already bought the tickets a month ago 🤟
@@NicknLex I still have my SD tix from 2 years ago. Since that time, Winwood has left the tour and was replaced by Aimee Mann instead of Snarky Puppy at this particular show! Aargh! Especially after seeing your video...these guys are perfect for SD.
Got to see them live,San Francisco jazz festival
Just a Great Band! Larnell Lewis, playing drums, is Canadian!!
Listening to you guys and being so jealous of you getting to see Snarky Puppy
One word to describe this is overkill!! Cory's solo is completely out of this world and what's even ore insane is that the drummer Larnell Lewis got a last minute call to do this show and had to learn the songs on a flight between America and Europe!! How is that even possible?!
Alright!!!! Y'all just helped ME understand what I really wanted to say as it pertains to how I felt when I'd first heard/watched this performance. EUPHORIC!!! EUPHORIA!!!! Is there another word for that besides HAPPY? LOL!!!!!
This is so amazing music.
They invite guest vocalist and create in my opinion some of the best music anywhere in world
Watch Dirty Loops if u want some next level stuff 😊🤘
