    IBIS really seems to be about taking photos hand held with non-stabilised lenses. We really need an option to turn it off for video. Not having IBIS is definitely an unintended benefit for the R8 (too bad the battery is a deal breaker). Lens stab really is amazing. The DJI RS3 Mini gimbal is very affordable, I highly recommend it as an image stabiliser for video including vlogs. It actually makes the non-IS RF 16mm pretty useable, and the 24mm and 35mm IS are even more awesome with a gimbal.

    Dear Josh, thats a great video and something what I was searching. I'm buying my first ever camera and I'm not sure which one to go. So many confusions. First was, Sony vs Canon due to 3rd party lens support. But I'm not a professional photographer (yet) and may not need to buy many lens (maybe max three lens) so I decided Canon.Then I shortlisted R8 and R6mk2. So should I buy R8+gimble+lens without IS instead of R6mk2? Or R8+gimble+lens with IS instead of R6mk2. It seems cost is mostly coming equal to R6mk2 in 2nd scenario 😅

    I couldn't afford an r6 (mk I or II) so I went with an R7 over the R8 for the IBIS (And mechanical shutter and bigger battery). This video confirms that I made the right choice. It would have been nice if you were able to add a non-stabilized lens to the mix as the bodies with IBIS will still stabilize a little using the IBIS.

    I have a Canon 400mm prim unstabilized - so this was just what I was looking for.
    I intend to buy the R8 once i've saved enough. However, the stabilised video test worries me. I can tell the digital stab of the R8 will not perform at 400mm handheld without additional lens IS. My choices are (1) I buy the R8 and also buy the new canon 100-400 RF lens or (2) I buy the R62 and keep my 400mm prime. I think the prices work out the same either way.

    What people forget is stabilization is also subjective to the person holding the camera, how careful or shaky they are when walking and how they hold the camera. I saw another dude with the r8 and 16mm lens and it was super stable. So take every video as subjective.

    I get this weird effect using digital IS where every time there would be a jitter, the video is stable, yet the image gets fuzzy for a second. Just looks strange. I've heard that if you up the shutter speed, that would fix it. I guess it has something to do with motion blur as the image is shaking.

  • @ralphsaad8637
    @ralphsaad8637 2 місяці тому

    I have noticed some issues related to IBIS as well, mostly when shooting with the mechanical shutter. Granted, the mechanical shutter is supposed to cause more shake. However, what happens is that when using it with certain lenses with shutter speeds of 1/200 and less, I get consistently some microshake. The image will look fine as a whole, but zooming in reveals a slightly fuzzy image. Even if I try really hard to eliminate the shake, the image will still be fuzzy. The problem is solved when I raise the shutter speed to 1/250 or switch to the electronic shutter. In the end, I end up disabling completely the stabilisation as I prefer to use the mechanical shutter to better utilise the sensor's dynamic range and color depth. I only enable it at times when shooting in low light after switching to the electronic shutter, or when I am shooting video.
    Just know before you get disappointed that IBIS is better on paper than it is in real life for stills.

    Would like to ask for a compact combo of R8 + 16mm F2.8
    Assume we have the crop factor of:
    Digital IS x1.1
    Digital IS Enhanced x1.3
    APSC crop x1.6
    Is it realistic to assume that we can achieve
    16mm x1.1 = 17.6mm
    16mm x1.3 x1.6 = 33.3mm
    Which is close to a 16-35 F2.8! Stabilized!
    Is it practical or there is a catch, like bad IQ at 33.3mm scenario or limitation at certain record setting? Thank you!

    I think one thing you didn’t cover was those IBIS failures for wide lenses.
    It seems that Canon is increasingly using in-camera corrections for wider lenses, rather than doing so optically. IBIS effectively shifts the lens center - and the lens correction then seems to be applied incorrectly leading to strange corner warping effects.

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  Рік тому +2

      This is a great question and I haven't seen any documentation on this. That is why I mentioned this during the APS-C segment in this video. The file that you get from the camera is still 4K, but how it handles the resolution while cropping in is a question mark. These cameras have a 6K sensor so cropping in while in full frame mode shouldn't be a problem. When I tested the raw on the R6II, the crop mode is only 3.7K. Even if it was 4K in APS-C mode, once you crop in then you are getting less than 4K resolution. So I am not sure what is going on in terms of upscaling or whatever but you don't get anything for free.

So instead of seeing Matchbox Vehicles that look tiny and far away I get a much closer view . Now on Sony when using Extra Image Zoom you do have poorer focus. Also a good point when cropping. In my opinion the Resolution becomes HD instead of 4k. Cheers!

Whenever I install the camera on my Gibmal and deactivate the stabilization on both the lens and the camera OR when I activate it, my video recordings shake on a horizontal level. In fact, the activated or deactivated image stabilizer in the camera shakes as soon as I walk, run or jump. You not only see it in the video recording, you also hear it clicking. Is lens stabilization good enough to achieve steady footage when the entire body is moving, like underwater during a dive? Very glad I saw this, gonna pass on the r6 Mark II and go for either the Fuji x-s20 with some nice glass or a Sony a7r5 with a kit lens.
    Now the r8 does look nice but I feel like If I got the fuji or the Sony I wouldn't feel the need to pick up the r8, like ever.
    I also wanted to say, I realized near the end that all of these examples with the r8 where with the premium set of lens's for the RF line up, and I have nothing but EF lens's with there version of IS in it, so the more you think about the r8, its nice, its body is priced very well, but the glass is just outrageous, why waste that money. IMO, Canon’s IBIS is a fail. Yes it improves steadiness for lenses without stabilization, but most people who have a camera at an R6M2 and above price point will likely already have lenses that can steady most shots. The growing market demand for ibis was to steady a lot of vlogging woes of shaky footage. And the fact that the wobbles have not been resolved on wide angle lens (which vloggers and videographers want) makes ibis less compelling of a feature. We don’t want to “crop in” our images to get rid of the wobbles. How can cellphone cameras get this right and major cameras can’t?

    IBIS for video blows anyway - those shakes are annoying and when panning it’s not ideal either. Lens stabilisation for lifestyle shots and vlogs is absolutely fine, anything else, like you’ve said - you need a gimbal. Good stuff the R8 is so light for that very reason :)

      I do not know the actual number. I haven't tried to figure that out and I'm not sure if Canon has provided it either. It's pretty easy to check. Record some video on a tripod. Then record a clip with digital stab on. Zoom in on the first shot to match the digital stab clip and that is the crop factor.

    Canon won't let you use only digital stabilization with a stabilized lens, so the shots with no lens IS and digital on the camera still keep everything off and just crop in. I don’t think that is true from my testing. You can see how the digital IS performs with the lens stab turned off on the R8. I think the digital stabilization is pretty limited in the R8. The overall stabilization really benefits from having lens stab. The digital stab could also work differently in the R5C and C70 since they use the cinema operating system. Things are often different between the mirrorless video and cinema operating system, like autofocus for example.

    are there people buying an expensive camera like the R6II to "vlog" ... that is to talk to the camera while walking? I would use a phone or a small camera, as also, what is the point of going through all the complexities of getting a "professional" quality image for a vlog? I would like a camera for gimbal use to shoot moving subjects, and the R8 seems perfect as it is small and light, has a wonderful AF, good image quality .... the problem that you point out is overheating which makes it unreliable and small batteries. I would never shoot with digital stabilisation, and in particular I find horrible the artefacts of the enhanced mode. The R6 ibis is catastrophic in my opinion, and I would never shoot something with an artistic or good quality goal with this IBIS ... if I want something handheld, I would flee from the wobble, and if I want something smooth, I would use the gimbal. So I wonder if I should go with the Sony FX3 even if I dislike the "video" over sharpened look of the image, and much prefer the Canon.

Not to mention that you can’t use the widest setting of the lens. The ‘one job’ of ibis is to add stabilization without crop. The only other option is gimbal, which is superior to any ibis. And ig you pay for ibis and it can’t do its job and that you can’t turn it off, makes no sense. The only thing I can think off is that canon doesn’t want people to use ibis with wide lenses, or doesn’t want to admit that canon bis is inferior.
