- Monday the 18th of January 1971: The Wight Locomotive Society were issued a weeks notice to quit their site at Newport station, by the 25th. The society had their sights set to make a base at Havenstreet, with their collection; O2 Class - W24 "Calbourne", 5 coaches, and a few historic wagons, making home on just over a mile and a half of track.
Colloqually known simply as 'The Move', the 24th of January 1971 saw "Calbourne", which had been nursed back to life at Newport by the WLS after its purchase in November 1966, make a handful of trips between Newport to Havenstreet transfering the WLS collection to their new home. The frantic nature of the move, makes the success story of the Wight Locomotive Society all the sweeter; especially given the obstacles that faced the move, including adverse weather, landslips and the minimal preparation time.
50 years on, the Isle of Wight steam Railway has become one of the most reknowned preservation success stories. To celebrate their anniversary, the railway held a '50th Anniversary Gala' over the weekend of Friday the 4th - Sunday the 6th of June. Each day of the event featured something different, to add to the spectacle; Friday and Sunday featured demonstration freight services and double headed workings, Saturday featured a photo line-up in the morning of the three operating locomotives at Wootton, as well as late evening services, while Sunday showcased a recreation of the morning mail services that used to frequent the Islands' railway system.
Visiting from the Kent & East Sussex Railway, 'Terrier' - 2678 "Knowle" (name not carried) reprised its Isle of Wight identity for the duration of the event, regaining the number W14 along with the name "Bembridge". W14 would be flanked by the IoWSR's own pair of Island locomotives; W11 "Newport" (name not carried), and W24 "Calbourne". The visit marked W14's first visit to the Isle of Wight in over 80 years.

As a kid in the1950's and 60's,, we used to have our annual summer holidays in the Isle of White. Some of my earliest memories were of steam trains at Portsmouth Harbour but even after the mainland converted to electric, the island remained with steam. Visited here two years ago and delighted that so much has been preserved.
The Line is like stepping back in time!
Let's do the time warp, pop into the Tardis and transport ourselves back a hundred years!!! The IOWSR is the epitome of a sleepy rural line and well deserves to blow it's own trumpet. It is one of the best run and friendly preserved lines I've visited. Great vid as usual my friend - and you made the weather change!!!!👍🏻❤

@@TheSouthernerYTChannel Really? Wet Friday (I know, I was in it!!) Sat & Sun nice, and I'm just across the way!! IOW has to be near the top along with Swanage, then I'm Southern biased!!!!!!!
Thankfully no rain in my neck of the woods, and while travelling to the railway. The only shots taken on the Friday, were those of the double header - mercifully, with the weather holding up enough. The weather Sunday morning, while pleasent, was quite mystical with all the cloud and fog on the Island. With the majority of the filming done on Saturday, I used that as a framework to stitch the Friday and Sunday shots in at roughly the correct times of day.

I cannot bring to mind a more perfect setting other than on this tiny island, off another island.
That feeling of otherness is so pervasive.

Lovely video of a beautiful country branchline , I remember the Wight locomotive Society at newport and was shocked sometime later to find a pile of sleepers outside the station , One of the best steam Railways in the UK ,Thanks for all the info as well

Excellent video of a wonderful heritage line. It was a great weekend of steam on the Island. It’s a shame that a physical connection to the Island Line can’t be put in at Smallbrook to allow these trains to run into Ryde SJR.

Hello Southerner You deserve congratulating for presenting an brilliant view of the lOW and its unique railway as well as the beautiful countryside.
It is over 10 years since I was last on the railway and went behind Freshwater.The 0-4-2 was under.
heavy maintenance at the time. I long to come to your neck of the woods sometime this year.

Simplified to its basics, BR wanted them out, in order to sell the land.
Can't help wishing someone would put a terrier in WC&PR livery though... (not applicable to IoW obviously )
