  • This time on Road & Race I give the Boxster a thorough inspection.
    It's not good news.
    In this video I'm going to get the car on the lift, and give it a serious inspection. Yes that means taking off the wheels, all the plastic, wheel arch linings and all the under trays.
    There are a few common faults which I'm going to look out for these included - rusty brake lines, blocked water drains and oil leaks.
    I'll also check to see if I have the problematic and engine killing weak IMS bearing or not.

    great to see you uploading again! Re. the transmission tunnel - I understand that the 986 and 987 were identical to their respective 911 counterparts from the doors forward so I guess that would have been for the front propshaft, as well as generally stiffening up the structure.

    Well done on a really informative video. I have the same model & just undertaken a full strip down of the whole front end, inc new subframe, new suspension parts, front crossover pipes and total replacement of front brrake lines. I used Sealey Copper Nickel brake pipe and can recommend it. Some advise I would pass on is price any parts from the Porsche dealer first as they are cheaper. I look forward to see how you get on with replacing rear brake lines, please do a video. If you need any advise on tools I used for bending and flaring the brake pipes let me know.👍

    Not sure if you mentioned it but the intakes at the front show the condensers and directly behind are the radiators. My condensers leaked and although not great, It forced me to take the bumper off and replace which revealed a lot of crud between condenser and radiator, which would not have been good long term.

    Great video! Just FYI - There should be four drain points in the battery area. Two on each side. Two are near the shock towers and two are closer to the battery. Check it out!
    Also check the two drainage points in the convertible top boot tray area.
    The good news on your IMS bearing is that it can be replaced.

    Brake lines rust out in their plastic clips. Might be worth checking the front edge of the sill behind the wheel arch liner as it invariably spreads and once underneath the rubberised coating it can do damage unnoticed.

    Take a peek at the bump stops unless you were already planning on replacing the struts. They have a habit of dissolving.
    Also remove the serpentine belt and check for any play on the water pump pulley - that's an annual check for me.

    Looks decent underneath. RMS, IMS, clutch and flywheel look to be high priority with the amount of oil leaking. At least you have the replaceable IMS

  • @barsaf9989
    @barsaf9989 4 місяці тому

    If you're addressing the rear main seal, then yes definitely do the clutch and ims. Otherwise I would leave the ims alone. Ims failures have been blown out of proportion. I don't remember fully, but I believe you have the "easy to replace" bearing? The dual row? I do remember on some models you have to actually disassemble the engine to replace it.

    The drains are common to block on BMWs too.. easier just to use a pressure washer to blow them through

  • @RadsGarage
    @RadsGarage 4 місяці тому

    I can tell you from experience that any minor slip on the jacking point does in fact result in smushed break, and in my case the clutch lines.
    Replacing them 'correctly' is difficult as the have to come out from where those drains are under the cowling :(

    Regarding that big tunnel under the car, I wouldnt be surprised if this is because the boxster and 911 (which was offered with awd) share the same fundamental chassis architecture. Another youtuber discovered this whilst rebuilding a boxster

    RAC do a tyre sealant pack that has NO expiry date.
    It's not an aerosol so you need to remove the valve & squeeze it in.
    I've got a bottle in my Golf & two in my 987.
    Amazon UK are currently selling them for £7.95 each or 4 for £20.
