  • I explore Teotihuacán, what was Mexico’s biggest ancient city and capital of its largest pre-Hispanic empire, including the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon. I then take a trip to one of Mexico and Latin America's most renowned pilgrimage sites, the Basilica de Guadalupe.

My understanding is that Teotihuacan is not from the Aztec era . It peaked and was abandoned before the start of the Aztec empire - when the Aztec people found the eagle with a snake on a cactus at the location where they founded Tenochitlan (now Mexico City). When the Aztecs discovered the pyramids - they gave the names Sol and Luna and imposed their beliefs on the site. I am not sure that anyone knows what the significance of the pyramids was to the people of Teotihuacan. Anyway, beautiful images. You got a nice clear day.

    hi Jason! amazing video
There was no city, kingdom, or empire more important than Teotihuacan in the American continent (50 BC-650AD) Its influence and cultural and political dominance reached the center and south of the USA and even Costa Rica.
With 25 square miles built up, Teotihuacan was larger than Imperial Rome or Constantinople in 400 AD
Tenochtitlan in 1521 only had 3 built-up square miles.
The origin and ruling class of Teotihuacan were Ñhäñhus ("Otomies") Not nahuas.
The name Teotihuacan was put by the Nahuas in the ss. XIV, 700 years after the collapse of that imperial city
The mathematical numerical value of π is represented in the slope that its constructors gave to the pyramid.
    Hey Jason
The Pyramid of the Sun presents a great enigma, when it was excavated in 1906 for the first time an enormous layer of mica was found, the mica is used as electrical insulation. The strangest thing is that the mica comes from Brazil more than 1500 miles away from Teotihuacan!

There is no evidence to support your theory that Teotihuacan was neither built nor ruled by the Otomi, the Otomi are only one of the four groups of indigenous peoples that inahbited Teotihuacam but they were not the only ones, there were also Maya and Nahua peoples in Teotihuacan too, don't spread missinformation and foolish pseudohistory.

    • @Vancouver_Dan

You can self guide to Teotihuacan by taking the Metro to Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte and catching an intercity bus from there (all in, this will cost less than $250 pesos per person). The advantage of this is you can get there early before the tour buses arrive (and it is fun). You can find detailed instructions on line. You could also take the public transit route as part of a group tour by Estacion Mexico Tours (for about $800 pesos). (Estacian also offers outstanding free walking tours of the Centro Historico). I believe you can also take an uber. As for the Basilica - we walked there on a Sunday morning when the arterial roads were closed to traffic for cyclists and pedestrians (we walked 9 km from the Reforma 222 mall to the Basilica). We loved the walk and saw many parades of pilgrims along the way. We took the metro back from the Basilica. Tip: have a change purse with $5 and $1 peso coins for public bathrooms along the way.

Actually, as far as I know the pyramids themselves have been closed for a while (a couple of years or more), meaning you can’t actually climb them anymore, and it’s not due to COVID, apparently there were some accidental falls from the pyramid of the sun, as it has no protection on the top, they were meant to be fall proofed but it hasn’t happened (I imagine it has something to do with the fragility of the stone up there)

    • @JasonBillamTravel

Contrary to what many people assume, redheads did not originate in Scandinavia, Scotland or Ireland, but in central Asia.
Their coloring is due to a mutation in the MC1R gene that fails to produce sun-protective, skin-darkening eumelanin and instead causes pale skin, freckles and red hair.

@@JasonBillamTravel Okay thanks. See I was also kind of asking, because baby Archie of Megan and Harry, kind of has your hair coloring, dark red. And it seems his parents have the same hair color as your parents, ginger and dark. Interesting.

Spent many vacations in Mexico City with family, when I was young. Teotihuacan used to have a night show which lit up each pyramid and told the history. Also Xochimilco was my favourite!

Very interesting, the pyramids. The new basilica of Guadalupe must be the ugliest basilica in the whole world, who designed that eye sore? The old basilica looks better, more like a church. Thank you for your interesting videos, Jason.

Thank you for insulting a most sacred religious site for the world's Catholics. You are welcome to come and see both, even if one of our most iconic, religious structures disgusts you more than the other.

@@leonorfontes57 Hell no, we Mexicans are PROUD of OUR OWN architectural designs and have NO interest in the preferred European designs of EUROPEANS themselves, especially if they BURN their own work! lol But once again, we thank you for your well-meaning EUROCENTRIC insults! Aun asi, seras bienvenida a mi pais para que veas la calidad de nuestras bellas artes, aunque no te gusten nuestros disenos, ya que la preferencia europea hacia lo suyo es lo TIPICO del europeo. lol (No, I will NOT translate from Spanish to a less "beautiful" language.)

I'm a subscriber and big fan of the channel, and I'm not trying to be a jerk about it, but I have noticed how well your pronunciation has been since you've gotten to Mexico. Which only stands out to me, as a fellow English speaker, because of how poor it seemed in Italy. Ha!
