My understanding is that Teotihuacan is not from the Aztec era . It peaked and was abandoned before the start of the Aztec empire - when the Aztec people found the eagle with a snake on a cactus at the location where they founded Tenochitlan (now Mexico City). When the Aztecs discovered the pyramids - they gave the names Sol and Luna and imposed their beliefs on the site. I am not sure that anyone knows what the significance of the pyramids was to the people of Teotihuacan. Anyway, beautiful images. You got a nice clear day.
Yes and no, the site was found by the mexica but those two giant pyramids were built by the aztecs, if i recall correctly took them something like 80 years to built

hi Jason! amazing video There was no city, kingdom, or empire more important than Teotihuacan in the American continent (50 BC-650AD) Its influence and cultural and political dominance reached the center and south of the USA and even Costa Rica. With 25 square miles built up, Teotihuacan was larger than Imperial Rome or Constantinople in 400 AD Tenochtitlan in 1521 only had 3 built-up square miles. The origin and ruling class of Teotihuacan were Ñhäñhus ("Otomies") Not nahuas. The name Teotihuacan was put by the Nahuas in the ss. Hey Jason The Pyramid of the Sun presents a great enigma, when it was excavated in 1906 for the first time an enormous layer of mica was found, the mica is used as electrical insulation. The strangest thing is that the mica comes from Brazil more than 1500 miles away from Teotihuacan!

Hello Jason I have my trip planned to Mexico City mid June and was wondering if you had any recommendations or if you took a specific tour to teotiihuacan ? I would love to visit the exact sites you explored. Thank you in advance ❤️
You can self guide to Teotihuacan by taking the Metro to Terminal Central de Autobuses del Norte and catching an intercity bus from there (all in, this will cost less than $250 pesos per person). The advantage of this is you can get there early before the tour buses arrive (and it is fun). You can find detailed instructions on line. You could also take the public transit route as part of a group tour by Estacion Mexico Tours (for about $800 pesos). (Estacian also offers outstanding free walking tours of the Centro Historico). I believe you can also take an uber. As for the Basilica - we walked there on a Sunday morning when the arterial roads were closed to traffic for cyclists and pedestrians (we walked 9 km from the Reforma 222 mall to the Basilica). We loved the walk and saw many parades of pilgrims along the way. We took the metro back from the Basilica. Tip: have a change purse with $5 and $1 peso coins for public bathrooms along the way.
