One of the best train rides in the world.. I have visited Sri Lanka 13 times and never missed that train.. They now have a special train called Ella Odyssey and next time I will be on it.. Love to SL from the USA!

Always ask the railway people where the 2nd class coaches stops in the platform so you will be standing right in front of it when the train arrives. Don't forget the World end hike. Its a quick train ride back from Ella to Ohiya. And don't be shy to ask where people get off so you can be standing next to that person's seat.

You must go back to Kandy, Ella Odyssey train,(the train name) it's stops at beautiful places along the way, and gives you time to enjoy the beauty there. ❤❤

We did this journey on the night train, it’s a freight train delivering to all the stops, but there’s only two carriages and no tourists… so we got the best seats, and had chats with a few locals. Also got sunrise over the hills
It takes longer because of the delivery times but worth it

there are two other very beautiful train rides in Asia- toy train Mettupalayam to Ooty in Southern India and kalka to shimla in Northern India. both are UNESCO World Heritage sites and beautiful rides.

Im an Indian married to an Aussie and we took this ride on our honeymoon on 4th January 2022 from fort Colombo petta station. And i simply loved the landscape of srilanka. Lots of greenery.
I loved the beach side of kandy as someone coming from up north of himalayan region and in chilling north indian winters, kandy was absolutely amazing.
But srilanka was very costly due to economic crisis those days.

Thanks for the video. You remind me a lot of memories in my childhood. My family travelled every 3 school vacations (April, August, December) from Colombo to Badulla in the same train route. Because my parents are from Badulla. This is the best and highly rated train travel I ever recommend. Now I'm watching your video from UAE and recalling my memories. May be I travelled more than 150+ thru this train route. Hopping to travel my next travel in coming August.
Nice trick, jumping on the train in Peradeniya, instead of Kandy. I did the tour Kandy to Ella twice, on two different vacations. I did so, because I both times had a stop over in Kandy, of course, but I sure did stand for seven hours both times. It was no problem though, because I were essentially the first time standing in the door all the time. Indeed, right side is the one to go for: Left side is mainly the view to waterfalls and mountainsides, but right side is the views to open landscape and valleys. Sri Lankans, especially in the central regions, however do love waterfalls. It is like a national sport to chase waterfalls and go for picnic in those beautiful locations. A bit scary to see others hanging out of the door on a train like that, but I did so myself, holding with one hand and shooting photos with the other. People got to remember, this is a very slow train through the central mountain region of Sri Lanka: It hardly ever goes quicker than 30 km/h.

To get the best view...Suppose if you are starting from Colombo Fort, the the best seats would be the the seats on left hand side and when you are sitting on those seats you'll feel like going reverse until Kandy a bit dissapointing 😅 But from Kandy to Badulla You guyz are among the luckiest ones in the train ( Now you'll go in the foreard direction ),on the right side of the moving train 😜

Iv'e done this journey 5 times now. Earlier this year I hiked along the railway for the last 40 miles. Only ten miles a day as the towns are roughly ten miles apart. so who wants to hike 20 miles a day. Ps yes I hiked the section with 14 tunnels.
