    Today on our 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, we'll be having a look at and installing the Air Lift 1000 Air Helper Springs for the rear. Part number AL60814. The reason you'll want to have an Air Lift system like this is if you have a vehicle where you're towing a trailer with a heavy tongue weight, or have a lot of cargo loaded in the back of it quite frequently. This will help support the rear of the vehicle to help prevent it from sagging, so you can drive down the road with the vehicle riding more like factory, and you won't have to compromise your suspension, your tires, or your handling. You'll have it riding level, but you'll still have your handling, your braking, and your tire wear will be just like normal. Let's have a closer look at what our Air Lift here comes with. We have our two air bags here. We have our section of black rubber hose here for the air line.
    We have some zip ties to help secure everything. We have two grommets to run the air line through. We have a T fitting here that will connect the two air bags, and lead us out to one cord on the back of the vehicle. We have our fittings here to air them up. We have some washers, some nuts, some rubber washers, and some star lock washers. Some caps to cover up our fittings, to keep dirt and dust out of them, so we can easily air them up. With our vehicle up in the air, and our rear axle supported with some jack stands here, we can begin our installation by unclipping the brake line from this plastic clip on the side, doing so with a flat head screwdriver.
    We'll separate the tab like so. Pop it free. Remove this bolt here from this bracket. This bolt's a 13 millimeter. We'll do the same thing on the other side. Now we'll disconnect our rear shocks from the sub-frame, putting an 18 millimeter wrench on the nut side, and an 18 socket on the bolt itself.
    We'll do the same on the other side. Now we want to take a marker, and mark the body, the spring seat, and the spring itself, so we can line them all back up when we reinstall them. Do the same on both sides. With our springs, the spring seat, and the body marked all in the same location, we can lower our rear axle enough so the springs can come out. I'm going to do this slowly and evenly on both sides. Pull them back, around the brake lines. Remove the spring.
    Make sure we do the same on both sides. With our springs removed, I went ahead and put an L for the left spring, and an R for the right spring. That way they go back in their original location. First thing we need to do is remove this bottom piece from the spring. Now we'll pull off the actual bump stop itself here. Drop it out the bottom of the spring. Then we'll remove the top section as well. You might find that a little difficult to remove. Now taking our bounce bumper bracket here, take a half inch drill bit in a large existing hole. It's plastic, so it drills very easily. Make sure you're wearing gloves while doing this, or put it in a vice. We're going to pour some of the rubber stuff on through. We're going to push the plastic on through a little bit to help clean up the hole. Now this top hole here, where the spring seats on the vehicle, we need to drill that out to a half inch as well. Now we can do the same for the other side as well. Now at the top of our left spring seat, there's a reinforcement right here. We need to drill a hole a half inch in diameter, about three and a half inches from the bottom lip of it. Just behind this panel here. We'll mark where we're going to drill. Right now, with a smaller drill bit than our final diameter, we'll drill ourselves a pilot hole, making sure it will only go through the first layer of metal. With our pilot hole started, we can change out to our half inch diameter drill bit, and finish the hole. We can now take our supplied grommet, and insert it into the hole. Push it into position, squeeze it in. We can repeat the process on the other side now. Now we can take our air spring here. Remember, this is the top we marked with the yellow marker before. We can install our air spring with the fitting going towards the top. We'll have to squeeze it. Spray a little soap and water on the spring. It helps the air bag slide in through the coils a little easier. You won't be struggling quite as much. We can take our bounce bumper stop right here. See this divot right there That is where the end of our coil spring right here is going to rest. So push it back into position, give it a smack on the ground. We'll twist our coil spring to where it lines up. We're not reinstalling our bounce bumper, so we can set that aside. We'll take

    Two things I noticed that would make the job go easier. First, there appears to be no reason to remove the upper jounce strike plate (what you refer to as the "bump stock support"). You should be able to drill the holes without removing them. Second, after you drilled the two holes in the metal at the top of the spring supports you can push the black air hose down to the air bag. This way you don't need an assistant or a special tool to pull the air hose back up. Then attach the hose to the air bag.

    Really like the simplicity of your video. Now, to find out if the manufacturer warranty is voided.

      Thank you for the feedback! You will just need to check with the manufacturers warrantee to see if your specific warrantee is valid if you install this kit.

    This video follows the instruction manual - nice job at 5:01 is important for the tubing to be able to move freely in and out as rear goes up and down.;

    The gas tank isn’t at the rear of the van, it’s in the center of the underbody.

    If you're going to drill something that's not attached to something to keep it from moving you might want to put it in a vise or at least get you a quick clamp or something.

    Thanks for the video. Next time leave the springs on and squeeze the bag through the gap in the springs, saves time

    Do these actually help though? It seems like they’re larger bump stops

    • @etrailer

      These air helper springs help to add spupport the rear end of the vehicle to prevent sag when hauling a load. A bump stop will allow too much sag in the vehicle before they engage.

    What is the T fitting for? You state it's to lead to one port in the rear, but 2 are shown and you used both. Can you use the T fitting and just use one port and achieve equal pressure?

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  4 роки тому

      You can use the t-fitting to fill and empty both bags at the same time. This will ensure that your bags have the same pressure.

      @@etrailer Same Question. BUT I followed your link and saw the pic of the T-fitting installed. YET the next pics show 2 valves mounted. Why? Or, is this and either or choice? Use one valve and one T-fitting OR don't use the T-fitting and use two valves. I tend to agree that the T-Fitting would give you even pressure.

    • @etrailer
      @etrailer  3 роки тому +1

      @@sfret1 You can use two separate fittings or you can use one with a t-fitting. It is up to you. Typically, people will install a t-fitting because it is faster to inflate and deflate the air bags. The benefit of two separate fittings is that the air will not transfer from one bag to another if you have more weight on one side of the vehicle or when cornering on a road.

    So far I see they don't last very long, I like the idea but too bad the bags are not built better.

      The longevity of these air bags depend on the installation being done correctly and they air bags being properly maintained. We have had people that have had these bags or bags similar to these on their vehicle for years without any issues.

    Entirely too much work for me. I will just install air adjustable shocks from Gabriel

      @etrailer  4 роки тому

      This install does involve a bit of work but they are easier to operate and smoother than some adjustable shocks.
