I always thought Donald Glover needed to make another album to go beyond what he did in Because the Internet, but he kept just going into experimental stuff and he never really got back to that same level of rapping
BTI is great. To me, it’s in the pantheon of records like Blond, Igor, KSG, Circles, etc. where you hear it and immediately think that the person making it set out to make the best album of all time to them. Those are always my favorite records. It’s the kind of album that someone says “got them through high school/college”. I think you can debate which records are better (like, clearly Blond and Igor and Fantasy are all better musically) but just that immediate impact that lends itself to years worth of nostalgia can’t go unnoticed. It’s a fantastic record, truly.
I really like BTI, but I don't see the impact/influence from it that bino is saying the album has. Wish he could have explained further, maybe brought up music he feels was influenced by him.
Sad part is I love this album and think it's underappreciated but him saying shit like this does not help in the slightest. Radiohead didn't need to say their album was the dark side of the moon of alt rock.
the black women part is because a lot of media and people on twitter think glover hates black women. i think the self-interview is kind of a quirky satire of artistic ego, but its also possible its just a fully indulgent ego.

Marshall Mathers LP imo would be the definition of "The Rap OK Computer" knowing that that very record has inspired a lot of the greats themselves or artists such as Tyler, The Creator
tbh i think there is a good convo to be had if you don’t look at it as “rap doing what rock did” in the zeitgeist but, instead how art/history can be seen within a cycle of societal feelings / mindsets shift
Because The Internet is his best album front to back. Super underrated! I think some of the production is pretty unique too, particularly tracks like Sweatpants, No Exit, and Zealots of Stockholm.
Na his best work was Awaken My Love BTI is great in my opinion but to say it’s “underrated” I feel like is the exact opposite of what it is. Everyone likes to stroke the albums dick, just look at these comments. I call it overrated
Nah you tripping. BTI is not only a quality album (at least in my opinion) but it's very clearly inspired the newer generation of rap. I don't know if its on the level of OK Computer but it definitely has done a lot for not only rap culture but culture in general. Songs like 3005, pink toes, sweatpants are not only still relevant and replay-able but that sound is still very much alive in the genre.
Nothing he did on because the internet were sounds and concepts that hadn’t already been explained. It’s a good album but influential is not the word that should be associated with it
I think he’s mostly comparing the conceptual nature of the albums and how they both tackle technologies impact on society. I’d say after BTI a lot more hip hop artists started centering futurism and technology in there subject matter as well as being more meta
I don’t think that album has anything to do with that though, just the age we live in and social media becoming more prominent/young people growing up with these technologies
Radiohead’s OK Computer speaks for itself. It speaks for itself so much that the band hated touring those songs and made an (arguably) even better record in Kid A, and still are innovating. Donald Glover doesn’t have that in Because The Internet, but time will tell.
Bro, he swears he is on the same level as Kendrick and Kanye 💀 It's kinda sad. I thought the album was nice to vibe to but he's honestly been in that headspace for a while.
I don't exactly know on what grounds they're similar. It's much easier to see MBDTF and Yeezus as the OK Computer and Kid A, respectively, of the rap catalogue, given the huge stylistic shift. An artist culminating one era of their discography with a critically acclaimed record, and starting a new one with a polarizing, stripped down, genre-bending, and innovative new one. Seems like Donald Glover is just making a comparison based on the themes of both albums, but there are lots of other artists who've touched on the same subjects.
Why do so many artists not realize that needlessly comparing their work to all time classics immediately disproves their argument. This is like giving yourself a nickname, it’s just embarrassing. Ik this has been said already but jeez it really only shows how up their own ass they are.
Its his own work and he's proud of it, not everything an artist says is making a grand statement it was just an interview question that was made a headline. Hes an artist and respects good art, he's often used comparisons to other works to describe his own, not in an egotistical way, but just to describe how he sees it. Art is obviously subjective and he can't/isn't making the statement that the album is literally as great as Ok Computer he just uses the comparison to help describe the kind of vibe he thinks the album has in his eyes
@@porkeywings to be fair, I should probably read the article instead of the headline and I do see your side of it for sure. I'm not saying an artist shouldn't be confident in their work/ skills. But I still feel like comparing your work to an existing piece of art boxes in what you've created. Btw I didn't know Kobe gave himself that nickname and now that I do, I like it a little less lol. Also ego in sports is different from ego in art imo
I still fuck with quite a few songs off this album hard. Sweatpants, 3005, Crawl, Worldstar, The Worst Guys, Shadows, Telegraph Ave, Life the Biggest Troll
BTI to me is a better version of Camp. The amount of effort he put into it is amazing (despite the story being jumbled here and there) it still has that left over cringy Camp delivery but it doesn't really bring it down for me too much. I think if you are a Donald Glover fan you might consider BTI one of the best albums of last decade whereas if you're someone like me who likes some of his material/casual listener you might simply consider it a good/ok album.
I’m a Donald glover fan because of Atlanta and awaken my love everything else had it’s highlights. I remember his early stand up too and liked him then just took me a little while to come around to his music.
I remember at the time Camp being pretty awful. It felt like the culmination of Glover desperately trying to emulate Kanye. Whereas I think Because The Internet felt like he was moving away from that and I think he was starting to find a place that he can belong to as an artist. However, I think his attempts to be considered an "ARTIST" a la Prince rather than simply a rapper has led him to go up his own ass from time to time. I really didn't like his last album. Felt a bit too try hard.
It’s better than CAMP because it doesn’t have the corny punchlines and Asian fetishization. I’ve been a fan of Glover since his Mystery Team days. He’s gone a long way since “Asian Girls everywhere... UCLA”. Bro was hella racist lol.
@@quietman208 Camp is just a bad album. even if I were to ignore the corny punchlines and racism my main problem with it is how poor his delivery is along with not sounding good when rapping at all. It's like if you got someone from your school who could rap well to do an album but they never really sound professional or now how to carry themselves on a hip hop track. I think the people who still love this album either have big nostalgia for it, it got them into hip hop and never compared it to other hip hop albums, or they haven't really sat down and listened to it in years; even in this interview Donald doesn't like it all that much saying that it's more there for novelty reasons rather than being good. Even if you saying that its an album of it's time I'd bring up Section 80, Sideline Story, or even Goblin to an extent and you'll see that those albums still sound nice after all these years (maybe not so much with Goblin) whereas Camp sounds the least professional out of all of them and the funny part is that those are some of those artists' first major projects as well.
tbh i was just relistening to this album today and flight of the navigator and life give me the same existential dread as a lot of the songs on ok computer
I don’t know if Because The Internet is rap’s OK Computer, but I think Glover may have just used the comparison to provoke conversation. BTI is definitely an album thats slept on in the hip-hop community, and I do feel like people won’t give it the proper credit until something like Glover’s death. Anyway, I respect the dude for making that bold of a statement. It’s never bothered me to see people hype themselves up like that, even if it could be seen as pretentious. If anything, he proved that its a conversation to be had. That says a lot.
From a musical standpoint I agree but BTI is more than just the music, it has a screenplay that it underscores, videos, all the performances and interviews that glover did in that time, the entire rollout was an experience. When you take that into consideration there is mich more substance to be found, the whole thing makes more sense. Thats why I think he is right in saying that it was very new and different to what had been done before. It just hasn't been imitated much because its so much work
I love how Radiohead avoided ambitious comparisons when they released OK Computer (The Dark Side Of The Moon, or just Pink Floyd in general), but in this case it’s Donald Glover MAKING the ambitious comparisons.
I feel like jpegmafia's work reminds me more of radiohead, especially since he sampled the one song on "all my heroes are cornballs". I think he definitely hits up the best of abstract rap, and can really be seen as a continuation of Radiohead's ideas
unclear interjection + tech noun (OK Computer) unclear conjunction + tech noun (Because The Internet) Seems like he didn't just think this im retrospect but set off to make it in the first place, if only subconsciously
I don't know if it was his intent, but this is a good way to market a rap/hip hop album to an audience of people who mostly listen to rock music. Radiohead fans will hear this comparison and probably check out the album. Whether or not they agree with the comparison is another matter.
I don't get why he has to always make comments like these when he has such a good range of artistic output in past 10 years. He even gets recognized for it too so it's not like he's underrated
He desperately wants to be considered the best in the genre I think. Some people are super competitive. Or maybe he just made a joke. It made me laugh anyway 😭
Here's the thing with Donald Glover to me, I think he has very ambitious ideas but with not much substance. And I'm fine with that cuz he makes good sounding songs. My problem is everyone builds him to be like look how deep he is and different he is and even himself has said that, when he's not that different than everyone else.
This album is completely vinyl worthy imo. The whole album is a journey. People also forget there’s an entire movie screenplay written for this album that just needs a director. Tbh I love Donald Glover and what he’s done for music and how much this album has gotten me through so much shit in life, but he did not need to boast this album anything past what has already been done.
Aight ima be honest, even tho i disagree w his statement, especially on the influence, I feel like this album is actually left out the convo way more than it should be. This album was great

Your pantheon of great records ain't so great
@@frankrogers2968 Those are just the albums of that are regularly mentioned alongside it, Frank Rogers
Lmao mfer said KSG, it's just an ok 7 song album, Fantano stans are delusional.
Circles is a posthumous album. The best album for Mac himself that he made was probably Swimming.
I really like BTI, but I don't see the impact/influence from it that bino is saying the album has. Wish he could have explained further, maybe brought up music he feels was influenced by him.
At this point you're just unreasonably pushing anti-Donald Glover rhetoric. Subscribed.
lame
Bruh ain’t you the skibidi toilet guy
He's such a specific brand of self-righteous blerd. It's almost fascinating
Because of the internet is top 10 albums of the 2010’s. Conceptually, musically, visually, lyrically , instrumentally, this album is one of a kind.
*comment written by Donald Glover*
Never was crazy about Donald’s music but I highly respect him for Atlanta such a great series
Sad part is I love this album and think it's underappreciated but him saying shit like this does not help in the slightest. Radiohead didn't need to say their album was the dark side of the moon of alt rock.
Him interviewing himself and asking if he hates black women was insane.
Hahahahahaha oh my GODDDDD
the black women part is because a lot of media and people on twitter think glover hates black women. i think the self-interview is kind of a quirky satire of artistic ego, but its also possible its just a fully indulgent ego.
@@123rtXd pretty sure it’s just blatant ego. The first hint was him literally comparing his own album to one of the greatest albums in history despite the fact that most people don’t even call his album one of the best albums of the decade.. in his own genre.
@@bigpapi6688 i mean lets think about from glover's perspective - if you wanted to interview yourself to write a funny interview and simulatenously critique bad interviews why wouldn't you drop a bombshell like that - it generates clicks and buzz
this album means a lot to me. it has a special place in my heart for sure
That’s def gonna go to 808s, Donald a goat tho
i still think people don't talk enough about how talented Gambino actually is. i genuinely question if he's a fucking alien sometimes.
Man can rap, sing, write, direct, and do comedy. Whether or not you like him, no one can deny he's talented as hell.
@@sleep6837 his comedy special is gold, he needs to get back into standup.
He's way too smug about everything. Thats why i cant stand him.
People don’t talk about how talented he is because he loves to constantly remind everyone about it. The guy is talented but he feels like the epitome of someone that believes they’re two steps ahead of where they actually are.
@@Gino565 I mean if you think about his background and how far he got himself he did pretty well moving through different industries and positions
Marshall Mathers LP imo would be the definition of "The Rap OK Computer" knowing that that very record has inspired a lot of the greats themselves or artists such as Tyler, The Creator
Putting slick sonic and Awaken My Love on the same level is insane. It's like comparing factory made and hand crafted art pieces.
which one is which
@@rorterpobinson62 Slick Sonic is factory way too flawless / perfect I got love for Anderson Paak but Bruno Mars is sucking the soul out of the music
@@H13NrV honestly I agree. I liked a few of the songs but it got old fast, and some songs like 777 just sounded like old navy commercial music.
tbh i think there is a good convo to be had if you don’t look at it as “rap doing what rock did” in the zeitgeist but, instead how art/history can be seen within a cycle of societal feelings / mindsets shift
I’d argue that 808’s and Heartbreak was one of the most influential album ever possibly in hip hop history
Fantano in 2022: "Maya is the rap Ok Computer!"
Fantano in 2010: "Maya is a strong 5"
lol. Redux Melon. We need it.
Tbf no one liked ΛΛ Λ Y Λ when it came out, only recently are people seeing that it’s 10 years ahead of its time
Because The Internet is his best album front to back. Super underrated! I think some of the production is pretty unique too, particularly tracks like Sweatpants, No Exit, and Zealots of Stockholm.
Na his best work was Awaken My Love
BTI is great in my opinion but to say it’s “underrated” I feel like is the exact opposite of what it is. Everyone likes to stroke the albums dick, just look at these comments. I call it overrated
Theres no way you can say that after he released Awaken My Love
Real
“Because true internet,” and “underrated,” don’t make sense in the same sentence
Yes, it's definitely had it influence, but other albums have had MORE influence.
@@dez-m what kind of response is this lol
Nothing he did on because the internet were sounds and concepts that hadn’t already been explained. It’s a good album but influential is not the word that should be associated with it
I had a stroke reading this video title and died. Rip me 2021-2021
Always good and sympathetic when the artist himself claims this and not fans and critics see it that way.
I like the way each album title expresses societal obsession over technology.
@@churricardo1457 how is that not technology’s impact on society bro
What do you mean by “meta”
@@shayla4007 ?? That’s what i meant, it has nothing to do with the album
808s and Heartbreaks is the rap OK Computer
Not gonna speak on his music but I gotta say Atlanta is by far one of the best piece of media i’ve ever watched.
All My Heroes are Cornballs sounds a lot like Kid A. Concept wise they're very different but their sonic pallet is so goddamn similar I love it.
Radiohead’s OK Computer speaks for itself. It speaks for itself so much that the band hated touring those songs and made an (arguably) even better record in Kid A, and still are innovating. Donald Glover doesn’t have that in Because The Internet, but time will tell.
Had an aneurysm heading the title
Bro, he swears he is on the same level as Kendrick and Kanye 💀 It's kinda sad. I thought the album was nice to vibe to but he's honestly been in that headspace for a while.
Another reminder that we still need that Yeezus redux review
I don't exactly know on what grounds they're similar. It's much easier to see MBDTF and Yeezus as the OK Computer and Kid A, respectively, of the rap catalogue, given the huge stylistic shift. An artist culminating one era of their discography with a critically acclaimed record, and starting a new one with a polarizing, stripped down, genre-bending, and innovative new one. Seems like Donald Glover is just making a comparison based on the themes of both albums, but there are lots of other artists who've touched on the same subjects.
OK Computer is the Dark Souls of comparisons
This comparison is like breath of the wild but for music
Because the Internet is one of the top rap albums of all-time.
this is literally the pic of barack obama giving himself a medal defined
@@porkeywings ^ totally agree
or its just having confidence in your work, Kobe nicknamed himself the Black Mamba so your analogy doesnt really work
@@porkeywings to be fair, I should probably read the article instead of the headline and I do see your side of it for sure.
@@littyagain9402 nah that self nickname is/was cringe
It's an ok album that I have on my computer
"Nothing predictive or futuristic about Because The Internet" he literally has a track on there called 3005, that's as futuristic as it gets
this take from donald glover melted my computer screen
From a musical standpoint I agree but BTI is more than just the music, it has a screenplay that it underscores, videos, all the performances and interviews that glover did in that time, the entire rollout was an experience. When you take that into consideration there is mich more substance to be found, the whole thing makes more sense. Thats why I think he is right in saying that it was very new and different to what had been done before. It just hasn't been imitated much because its so much work
ΛΛ Λ Y Λ is easily the rap OK computer
Yes
I love how Radiohead avoided ambitious comparisons when they released OK Computer (The Dark Side Of The Moon, or just Pink Floyd in general), but in this case it’s Donald Glover MAKING the ambitious comparisons.
I listen to Because of the Internet many times of the year. Legitimately one of my most favorite albums of the year.
BASADO
If anything, it’s Glover’s “The Bends”. The album released before his magnum opus
I feel like jpegmafia's work reminds me more of radiohead, especially since he sampled the one song on "all my heroes are cornballs". I think he definitely hits up the best of abstract rap, and can really be seen as a continuation of Radiohead's ideas
Imagine if this video was the reason that people in the future refer to TPAB as Hip Hops "The Wall"
Well it would be correct. Both are overlong and bloated with filler.
because the internet ok rapper
unclear interjection + tech noun (OK Computer)
unclear conjunction + tech noun (Because The Internet)
Seems like he didn't just think this im retrospect but set off to make it in the first place, if only subconsciously
I feel like Bino is straight up trolling with that statement lol
nobody gonna talk about how Melon jus cut his own hair halfway through the video?
I don't know if it was his intent, but this is a good way to market a rap/hip hop album to an audience of people who mostly listen to rock music. Radiohead fans will hear this comparison and probably check out the album. Whether or not they agree with the comparison is another matter.
Certified Lover Boy is the rap Suicide Squad
I don't get why he has to always make comments like these when he has such a good range of artistic output in past 10 years. He even gets recognized for it too so it's not like he's underrated
He desperately wants to be considered the best in the genre I think. Some people are super competitive.
Or maybe he just made a joke. It made me laugh anyway 😭
@@banzai744 we truly don't know anymore with donald LMFAOOO 😭😭🥴
insecurity probably. A big theme in a lot of his music is how insecure he feels as a black rapper "who acts white".
Tyler’s Flower Boy is the rap In Rainbows
Here's the thing with Donald Glover to me, I think he has very ambitious ideas but with not much substance. And I'm fine with that cuz he makes good sounding songs. My problem is everyone builds him to be like look how deep he is and different he is and even himself has said that, when he's not that different than everyone else.
EL-P's Fantastic Damage is
The Rap OK Computer.
808s & Heartbreak Is The Rap OK Computer

No matter how the record turns out, you'll always be assured that Donald Glover will be he's own biggest fan.
